I did a faux rebind of Dune as a birthday gift for a friend of mine. Thankfully, his girlfriend sent me pictures of his own Dune Edition (in German) and its measurements. That way he can use this book sleeve for the German edition too. He’s been complaining about that design for quite a while, basically every time we enter a book store.

I also hand-stitched this little desert design into the book cloth, because I don’t own a cricut lol

How to befriend a mad scientist:

See through the wild eyes and know their logical reasoning behind what they do. “Fucking around and having fun” is very much reasonable too I must add.

Obtain old medical equipment for them that likely has dried blood of hundreds of patients on it but hasn’t broken once in decades of use.

Compliment his mad laughter.

Volunteer to be a test subject in their wacky experiments.

Engage with their interests and be open minded to their new ideas.

Respect their privacy when it comes to their personal experiments and special tools.

Know that they may sometimes have needs that are different to yours and despite being seemingly above human standards and comprehension they may still need silence or space, in some instances could also be noise and/or closeness.

Take their love with a caution as if you value your internal organs and being alive then it would be nice to not fall into their charms too deeply.

Keep a safe distance between them and their tools when they are in a “silly goofy” mood, you do not want a manic episode to lead to a loss of a limb or two.

Keep a first aid kit and some experience under your belt and at hand, as you never know when a spare bandage or some hydrogen peroxide may be needed.

Learn the warning signs of certain chemicals and objects, such as what specific substances can do, how corrosive they are, and how to deal with something dangerous on your hand.

Make sure to keep their favourite snacks at hand, as they may be too distracted to eat properly and they may aswell have something tasty. Make boundaries clear immediately, it goes without saying but here it’s most important.

If they crave meat then the most appropriate reaction is to likely leave their proximity.

Give them words of reassurance from time to time, compliment their work or skills perhaps.

Force them to sleep atleast a few times a week, as especially when having fun, they may be too overactive to recognise their decline and decide that despite their inability to do things as usual, their symptoms won’t get in the way of their fun.

Be able to function without a coherent person to speak to and learn basic body language and be able to figure out some nonverbal cues.

Learn your individual specifically, their strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, habits, and values. Would also help if you could figure out how they think but that’s easier said than done.

Have some banger tunes at the ready should they be released from their enclosure.

Enrichment is necessary to keep them tamed and at bay, keep a safe distance usually and make sure to have enough activities to allow them to expel all their energy.

Do not be angry at them should they forget to do certain things but rather take the courtesy of reminding them or leaving reminders.

Do not invite them to places without their consent or permission, if they don’t hold knowledge you’re going to be taking them somewhere, consider it a lost cause. Always talk through with your friend to make sure they are aware and fine with the ordeal.

If they have triggers, try to avoid them at al cost. Many mad scientists have been caught from the wild and so carry some mental instabilities due to the harsh environment out there, be able to identify the problem and try to handle it with patience and care.

Do not under any circumstances try to detain or hold down the creature, if they are being overly dangerous then try to find ways to coax them out of their aggression and likely offer something of equal value or interest to them.
