the first time Hobie had noticed you don't acknowledge his flirtations, was when he was watching you ramble, talk, and express your little heart away over your current hyperfixations. seeing you so overly joyed by something that you can't contain it made him happy, feeling himself fall more and more in love with you. he was nodding along, listening very intensely.

You figured he wasn't because his eyes weren't on what you were showing him, but on you. your chatter slowly died off, glancing at him with an apologetic face. "Sorry, m'ramblin'."

he shook his head, leaning forward and smiled. "nah, nah. Keep goin', like hearin' ya talk." he attempted at a subtle flirt, but seeing the way you just nodded and continued talking made him frown, but he carried on listening.

the second time was when he attempted to ask you on a date. he wasn't majorly experienced with romantic partners, but he had the charm. or, so he thought. walking up to you with a smile, draping an arm over your shoulder.

"wan' grab sum' coffee sometime?" He asked, walking with you and you just shrugged.

"No, I don't really like coffee." you said, and he slowly peeled his arm off you, his smile drooping away.

"oh, righ'." He nodded, continuing to walk with you but with his hands tucked into his pickets. did you not feel the same? were his advances making you uncomfortable?

the third, and final time, was when he had been walking to where you planned on meeting for a picnic, since it was spring. he got you some flowers, ones he remembered you said you liked. he greeted you with a smile and a tight hug, before presenting the flowers.

"pretty flowers for a pretty person." you laughed quietly, taking the flowers and sniffing them.

"you're such a nice friend." you sat on the blanket, looking up at him as he stayed standing, staring at you as if you had five heads. or voted Conservative.

"what? why're you looking at me like that...?" you frowned, crossing your legs as you began pulling out the food.

"...are you really that oblivious?" He asked softly, slowly seating himself across from you on the blanket.

"Sorry?"

"do ya not see the way I look at you? the way I talk t'you?" He asked, frowning. "or, do you and you don't feel the same? 'cos tha's fine, hones'," he said, raising his hands. "but I'd rather ya' tell me."

you stared at him. you did feel the same, of course you did, but you had no idea he even liked or. or that he was flirting.

"...you were flirting with me?" you asked, and he rolled his eyes slightly before laughing. "yea, have been for the las' three months. thanks f'noticing." he leaned towards you.

"so?" "

so...what?"

He sighed. "so, do ya...feel the same?" He asked, his eyes running all over your face, your features creating the most perfect facial harmony he's ever seen. you shrugged.

"I...don't know? I don't feel the opposite?" you mumbled. you had never really been good at deciphering your feelings, differentiating platonic and romantic, sarcasm and serious, teasing and mockery. it had never been where you shined.

he nodded in understanding, raising his hand to your cheek, a couple millimetres away, awaiting your permission. you nodded softly, and his hand softly held your cheek, thumb rubbing your cheek bone.

"tha's okay," he nodded, still studying all your features, freckles, everything.

"wha' do you feel when you see me? when y'r'near me?" he asked, and you shrugged softly. you felt bad that you couldn't tell him how you felt, simply because you didn't know.

"I don't know how to word it." You whispered, slightly leaning into his hand as he held your cheek. he smiled at the action.

"tha's fine. jus' say sum words 'n' I'll put 'em together."

"u–uhm...fuzzy and warm inside, nervous, but — in a good way, y'know? um — and then, I'm waiting for something. but I don't know wh—" He pressed his lips to yours, cutting your upcoming ramble off short.

you were surprised at first, but melted into him, returning the kiss with the same gentle passion he was giving. he pulled away, giving a few gentle pecks as he did so, as if he wasn't ready to pull away.

"was tha' what you were waitin' for?" he asked softly, smiling at you. you thought for a moment, before returning his smile.

"yeah, it was."

i wasn't 100% sure what exactly to do, so i'm just gonna do some headcanons; i hope that's okay !!

is definitely very, very insecure about the age gap. he worries that he's too old for you, and one day, you're going to realize you want someone closer to your age. it does make him feel better when you reassure him (his love language) that you love him in spite of his age and aren't going anywhere.

he's also always the butt of the joke because of his age. you'll lightly poke fun and call him old when he references something that's before your time, and your friends all refer to him as "grandpa."

you two do not share the same humor. he'll make a joke and die laughing while you're sitting there completely lost (and vice versa).

he claims he's always right because he's "older and wiser" which makes you roll your eyes. he usually is always right, but that's besides the point!

date night is hard to plan because you want to do fun and exciting stuff like party, but he wants to do relaxing and romantic stuff.

you tried to do a cute cooking date once, but he got frustrated because he's such a control freak in the kitchen.

you two argue like an old married couple. looooooots of bickering because he's too mature, and you're very immature.

talks about stuff and asks you to do things that he expects you to know and gets very bitchy when you don't (he's got the sass of a teenage girl)

tries to get you to come to court to see him win at least once, but you find it boring. all the legal jargon and having to sit quietly the whole time makes you want to fall asleep.

finding a show or movie to watch is sooooo difficult because your tastes are so wildly different.

same thing with music. you'll put on a new song you like, and he'll roll his eyes and tell you to put on something actually good (even though half the time he ends up actually liking the song)

he's very worried about what other people will think of your relationship. he loves you and wants to show you off, but he worries that the age gap (completely 100% legal, of course) will rub some people the wrong way.

sometimes, he gets insecure about his grey hairs and wrinkles, but when you tell him how much you love them and how sexy they are, he immediately feels a million times better.

constantly tells you how lucky he is that someone as attractive as you loves an old man like him. he's seriously bewildered why, but he feels so grateful for you. you're everything to him

you make him feel young again, and he loves it.

If Az and reader end up being mates, do you think their Frenzy would be mote intense due to the extremely prolonged build up of tension compared to Feysand, Nessian, and Elucien (assuming nessian and elucien end up together in the relatively same timeframe as Feysand)

I wonder if that might be an element if a mating bond does appear between them? Because certainly on reader's side, she tries to keep her affection for Azriel to herself - to the extent I think she's sometimes been made to feel ashamed of how she loves - so I suppose after trying to keep all of that suppressed as much as she can, she probably would have no reason to even attempt to contain herself if a frenzy drew her and Az together.

For Azriel I guess it might be a similar thing since I imagine that even once he does love reader, he'll spend a very long time denying those feelings, for a lot of reasons, so equally those emotions might just erupt out of both of them if a bond were to click?

But on the other hand, the part of me that's gotten kind of used to the angst aspect of cbmthy wonders if it might be something like Nessian? With Cassian flying up to Illyria for a week?

Maybe Azriel is concerned he'll do something he'll regret with how urgently he would want her during the frenzy? (As you probably know by now, I don't really think Az is particularly vanilla, so theoretically he might want to wait until the frenzy has passed so he can be entirely in control of himself when they first sleep together? Like I think with how Az sees reader, (and how he sees himself) he would think she'd think him a freak (derogative) for wanting to chain her up somewhere or whatever, and would walk away from him despite her having loved him when he's been...well, as he has, to her) And lock himself up somewhere so reader won't have to worry about anything? But then reader going looking for him anyway because she loves him and doesn't want him to suffer, which I think is very her

But who knows what will happen! It's so far away but at the same time scarily close!! It'll be weird, writing that last chapter, whatever it's about <3

"i'll see you later," you said, giving sonny a quick peck on the cheek before turning to the rest of the squad. "it was lovely to meet you all. i hope to see you again soon," you smiled warmly.

you had hung around for a couple hours but ultimately, needed to get home. you had a few things to straighten out for work and around the house, and you'd also really wanted some wind down time to yourself to destress for a bit before bed.

"see you around," finn smiled, giving you a nod, like you had passed some test of sorts. it made you feel sort of accomplished. finn was an interesting guy, and you were flattered to be someone he considered alright in his book.

"drive safe," olivia told you, giving you a warm smile.

"yeah, have a nice night," amanda mumbled reluctantly, her tone insincere.

"i love you," he called, watching as you left. you shook your head, grinning and blowing him a kiss. he pretended to catch it and press it to his heart. if you weren't already halfway out the door, you would have rolled your eyes and lovingly called him a dork. "she's great, isn't she, guys?" he turned back, a proud smile on his face.

"i don't know how on earth you bagged her, carisi, but you better not mess up," finn laughed, shaking his head in disbelief.

"oh, don't listen to him," olivia laughed. "you two are adorable together"

"aw, come on," he grinned, waving them off, but he couldn't help the blush that crept up onto his cheeks.

"what do you think, rollins?" he asked. she had been abnormally quiet all night, and he was dying to know what she was thinking.

"she's alright," amanda shrugged. she had that tense posture and tone of voice she always had when she was holding something back.

"well, i think it's time to get home to noah," olivia said, standing from the barstool and placing some money on the bar.

"yeah, i'm gonna call it a night too," finn follow suit, both of them clearly sensing the tension.

"goodnight," amanda called, glancing over, waving goodbye at them. they both waved back, heading for the door quickly, wanting to put as much distance between them and the impending argument as possible.

olivia had her fair share of arguments with stabler in her time. she knew exactly how heated and personal they could become, and finn, he just didn't want to have to sit there awkwardly. the fighting would make his beer taste bad— or so he would say.

"yeah, goodnight," sonny said, but his voice was quiet as he continued to stare at amanda with furrowed brows. "cmon, rollins," he pried, sitting down next to her. "i know when you're not tellin' me the truth"

"listen, carisi," she sighed, her finger tracing the rim of her glass. "i don't want to hurt your feelings, alright?"

"hurt my feelings?" he asked, feeling extremely confused. he felt like the introduction went well. was there something that he had missed?

"i just don't think she's good enough for you," she finally said, looking over to meet his eyes.

"not good enough for me?" he almost couldn't believe what he was hearing. "if anything, i'm the one that's not good enough for her!" his tone wasn't angry or defensive, just confused, as if he had never even considered the thought that he was too good for you.

"i'm just saying-" she paused, trying to find the words without coming across as jealous as she felt. "she doesn't understand the job and its demands. she won't understand you."

"amanda," sonny said, his voice low and serious. "you're my partner, and i respect your opinion more than anyone else's, but you're wrong."

"carisi-"

"no," he stopped her, his tone firm but not unkind. "if it's her understanding me that's your concern, i can assure you, she gets me like no one else. no one else has ever made me feel so seen and loved before. she may not always understand my job or my stressful law classes, but she listens, and she tries to understand, and that's what's important to me. i wanted you all to meet her because i love her, and you guys have grown to mean a lot to me. i would love for you to like her and be something friend adjacent, but i'm not going to lose sleep over it if you don't approve," he said, leaving no room for discussion.

amanda stared at him, opening her mouth to say something back, but she couldn't think of anything. she thought she could express her disapproval, and he would accept it. what she didn't expect was for him to come to your defense like that.

he really loved you, and there was nothing she could do about it.

Sigh. I wish cbmthy reader learns to love herself. Even just a little. To take pride in her genius and her fragile heart, to see the beauty of living.

I really want her to make friends outside of the ic, because I don't think she has any in the ic. Maybe become friends with a priestess when she goes to the library, or a normal citizen in velaris.

I want her to understand that feeling of power when you get out of bed and go on a walk, bundled up with a coat and hot cocoa. Because you could have been in bed, wasting away. But you're doing something

I want her to move out and away from the ic, even if its just a place to live and she still sees them and such. To get a cat (because shes not the type of person who could handle a dog) with one eye or one leg, who's deemed "ugly" and "defective" by society, like how she sees herself.

I want her to learn that you can't be defective as long as you're living, that you're just different, and to learn that you can put broken things together to make something beautiful.

i hope she learns how to love herself. Coming from someone who has tried to take their life, on several occasions, and screamed out for help.

I want her to learn that when no one answers, you save yourself.

Honestly I don’t want to encourage you but when there was that Helion tangent I had fantasised about what if reader announced over a dinner she wanted to go to the day court to study 😔 (and maybe also if she did manage to get to Day Court and work with scholars, she’d get a chance to also gloat to Eris that she was working as a scholar despite being female)

That’s so adorable, but also such a treasured experience that can take a while to appreciate

Babes you don’t know how many times I’ve fantasised about giving reader a pet or two to look after. Like a parrot? Or a stray cat? Or like in ToG but with one of Eris’ hounds and she instantly clicks with it?

Unfortunately it just wouldn’t be practical for the storyline since having a pet generally requires a lot of attention and looking after and reader doesn’t have the time for that ☹️

I think reader’s issues lie in her mind rather than her body (she’s self conscious about her hands but I’d say that because she feels more that she’s unbearable on the inside so if she’s ‘unbearable’ on the outside too, she has nothing)

I don’t want to give too much weight to cbmthy because at the end of the day it’s a piece of fanfiction I’m tapping out on my keyboard with zero professional writing experience, but I hope some people can find comfort in it. I think it’s difficult to speak about certain things sometimes—whether that’s for reasons of discomfort, or simply lacking the language to go about starting and having a discussion—so creating a piece of fiction to touch on different themes can be a way of tentatively putting feelers out for other people’s experiences? And, maybe, hoping that some other people might be able to resonate with experiences that are brought up

I’ll admit here, hidden at the bottom of a fairly long reply, that it’s been a relief seeing people’s responses to particular elements of the story

i changed the hazmat suit design a little because i um. want to draw their faces KJDSNFKGDF , also gave them little harness thingies and ..collars ^_^ BC IM INSANE? we’ve kind of talked about the ‘lore’ for it a little, like the idea that theyre controlling clones of themselves avatar style, so theyre able to die repeatedly and not face severe consequences ignoring the severe mental distress it gives them. i think its fun when characters get to die badly and its not a huge deal… dungeon meshi style <3

@justalildumpling I wanna say favourite bc vampie hyuck since that's like half of our convos BUT on a real note— the vibe she gives is energetic but also cool so in terms of SOLELY the vibe bc we all know what this song is about 🙈 I'd say pado and then in terms of the meaning of a song j is actually one of the few '04 friends I have so I feel like we can really be on the same wavelength at times so act my age by one direction

@jenobubbles as someone who I grew up with I think the memories we have together are v special to me and there's no way I can't say best friend (ever) by nct dream— both songs fit and if I could condense how it feels to be friends w amaya into one song it'd be perfect places by lorde because we really do share our best and worst moments together and she's someone I can count on (+ count on me by Bruno Mars ofc)

@jammingjaem I think lex is someone who has a very dynamic personality and it ranges between being hugely energetic to super laid back and relaxed so I think new dance by xg really fits the energetic side of things and starry night by mamamoo is a v chill vibe so it fits pretty well too
