the first time Hobie had noticed you don't acknowledge his flirtations, was when he was watching you ramble, talk, and express your little heart away over your current hyperfixations. seeing you so overly joyed by something that you can't contain it made him happy, feeling himself fall more and more in love with you. he was nodding along, listening very intensely.

You figured he wasn't because his eyes weren't on what you were showing him, but on you. your chatter slowly died off, glancing at him with an apologetic face. "Sorry, m'ramblin'."

he shook his head, leaning forward and smiled. "nah, nah. Keep goin', like hearin' ya talk." he attempted at a subtle flirt, but seeing the way you just nodded and continued talking made him frown, but he carried on listening.

the second time was when he attempted to ask you on a date. he wasn't majorly experienced with romantic partners, but he had the charm. or, so he thought. walking up to you with a smile, draping an arm over your shoulder.

"wan' grab sum' coffee sometime?" He asked, walking with you and you just shrugged.

"No, I don't really like coffee." you said, and he slowly peeled his arm off you, his smile drooping away.

"oh, righ'." He nodded, continuing to walk with you but with his hands tucked into his pickets. did you not feel the same? were his advances making you uncomfortable?

the third, and final time, was when he had been walking to where you planned on meeting for a picnic, since it was spring. he got you some flowers, ones he remembered you said you liked. he greeted you with a smile and a tight hug, before presenting the flowers.

"pretty flowers for a pretty person." you laughed quietly, taking the flowers and sniffing them.

"you're such a nice friend." you sat on the blanket, looking up at him as he stayed standing, staring at you as if you had five heads. or voted Conservative.

"what? why're you looking at me like that...?" you frowned, crossing your legs as you began pulling out the food.

"...are you really that oblivious?" He asked softly, slowly seating himself across from you on the blanket.

"Sorry?"

"do ya not see the way I look at you? the way I talk t'you?" He asked, frowning. "or, do you and you don't feel the same? 'cos tha's fine, hones'," he said, raising his hands. "but I'd rather ya' tell me."

you stared at him. you did feel the same, of course you did, but you had no idea he even liked or. or that he was flirting.

"...you were flirting with me?" you asked, and he rolled his eyes slightly before laughing. "yea, have been for the las' three months. thanks f'noticing." he leaned towards you.

"so?" "

so...what?"

He sighed. "so, do ya...feel the same?" He asked, his eyes running all over your face, your features creating the most perfect facial harmony he's ever seen. you shrugged.

"I...don't know? I don't feel the opposite?" you mumbled. you had never really been good at deciphering your feelings, differentiating platonic and romantic, sarcasm and serious, teasing and mockery. it had never been where you shined.

he nodded in understanding, raising his hand to your cheek, a couple millimetres away, awaiting your permission. you nodded softly, and his hand softly held your cheek, thumb rubbing your cheek bone.

"tha's okay," he nodded, still studying all your features, freckles, everything.

"wha' do you feel when you see me? when y'r'near me?" he asked, and you shrugged softly. you felt bad that you couldn't tell him how you felt, simply because you didn't know.

"I don't know how to word it." You whispered, slightly leaning into his hand as he held your cheek. he smiled at the action.

"tha's fine. jus' say sum words 'n' I'll put 'em together."

"u–uhm...fuzzy and warm inside, nervous, but — in a good way, y'know? um — and then, I'm waiting for something. but I don't know wh—" He pressed his lips to yours, cutting your upcoming ramble off short.

you were surprised at first, but melted into him, returning the kiss with the same gentle passion he was giving. he pulled away, giving a few gentle pecks as he did so, as if he wasn't ready to pull away.

"was tha' what you were waitin' for?" he asked softly, smiling at you. you thought for a moment, before returning his smile.

"yeah, it was."

i wasn't 100% sure what exactly to do, so i'm just gonna do some headcanons; i hope that's okay !!

is definitely very, very insecure about the age gap. he worries that he's too old for you, and one day, you're going to realize you want someone closer to your age. it does make him feel better when you reassure him (his love language) that you love him in spite of his age and aren't going anywhere.

he's also always the butt of the joke because of his age. you'll lightly poke fun and call him old when he references something that's before your time, and your friends all refer to him as "grandpa."

you two do not share the same humor. he'll make a joke and die laughing while you're sitting there completely lost (and vice versa).

he claims he's always right because he's "older and wiser" which makes you roll your eyes. he usually is always right, but that's besides the point!

date night is hard to plan because you want to do fun and exciting stuff like party, but he wants to do relaxing and romantic stuff.

you tried to do a cute cooking date once, but he got frustrated because he's such a control freak in the kitchen.

you two argue like an old married couple. looooooots of bickering because he's too mature, and you're very immature.

talks about stuff and asks you to do things that he expects you to know and gets very bitchy when you don't (he's got the sass of a teenage girl)

tries to get you to come to court to see him win at least once, but you find it boring. all the legal jargon and having to sit quietly the whole time makes you want to fall asleep.

finding a show or movie to watch is sooooo difficult because your tastes are so wildly different.

same thing with music. you'll put on a new song you like, and he'll roll his eyes and tell you to put on something actually good (even though half the time he ends up actually liking the song)

he's very worried about what other people will think of your relationship. he loves you and wants to show you off, but he worries that the age gap (completely 100% legal, of course) will rub some people the wrong way.

sometimes, he gets insecure about his grey hairs and wrinkles, but when you tell him how much you love them and how sexy they are, he immediately feels a million times better.

constantly tells you how lucky he is that someone as attractive as you loves an old man like him. he's seriously bewildered why, but he feels so grateful for you. you're everything to him

you make him feel young again, and he loves it.

Taunting him about how he always follows you around more like a puppy than the PM executive he is. Telling him that his little crush is pathetic and asking if he daydreams about having you under him, a moaning mess for him

Kissing him roughly, knife still not budging from where it is at his throat. Shoving him down and straddling him, knife now replaced by your hand wrapped around his throat. Instead of you being a mess under him, have it be him who's begging you to go faster, to stop teasing him as you ride him at a slow, languid pace. Stopping completely whenever he gets close just so you can see just how pathetic he truly is.

He probably still considers this his win, though.

He absolutely considers this a win. This is more or less the relationship all Dazais want with their enemies anyway, he'd be over the moon! The tension, the adrenaline, being overpowered by you and threatened; only for it to turn into sex and to feel you ride him so teasingly. Unfortunately it just wouldn’t be practical for the storyline since having a pet generally requires a lot of attention and looking after and reader doesn’t have the time for that ☹️

I think reader’s issues lie in her mind rather than her body (she’s self conscious about her hands but I’d say that because she feels more that she’s unbearable on the inside so if she’s ‘unbearable’ on the outside too, she has nothing)

I don’t want to give too much weight to cbmthy because at the end of the day it’s a piece of fanfiction I’m tapping out on my keyboard with zero professional writing experience, but I hope some people can find comfort in it. I think it’s difficult to speak about certain things sometimes—whether that’s for reasons of discomfort, or simply lacking the language to go about starting and having a discussion—so creating a piece of fiction to touch on different themes can be a way of tentatively putting feelers out for other people’s experiences? And, maybe, hoping that some other people might be able to resonate with experiences that are brought up

I’ll admit here, hidden at the bottom of a fairly long reply, that it’s been a relief seeing people’s responses to particular elements of the story

That is quite the whirlwind of emotions contained to just three sentences! Wow, okay I don’t even know where to begin with that 😭

I feel like having him pass away might be a bit of a harsh sentence, but I’ll leave that up for debate… The hooking up with either Helion or Eris…I dread to think what sort of drama that would land her in if she actually did either of them, but hey, it’s all fictional, why not theorise?

I think between the two of them (theoretically) Helion would be the better choice, since I don’t think Eris has allowed reader close enough that he’d be openly affectionate with her—which I think is some of what she needs, most of all 👀

Helion though, I think they would bond well, both with the scholar aspect and with Helion probably being much more open—I imagine it wouldn’t be too dissimilar from how her relationship was with Bas when they were still intimately sleeping together? And plus I think just reader getting to visit elsewhere is something she’d love to do after her trip to autumn and getting to see the different things 👀

Not sure if this will help or hinder your feelings on the earring subject, but I strongly headcanon that out of everyone who gave her a give, Azriel put the most thought into his 😶

Because he knew that reader was fond of him so didn’t want to get her something bespoke or precious in case that caused her to latch onto him more, but also couldn’t give her nothing because that would have been cruel, so spent ages just thinking about what would be a polite, cursory gift he could give that would suffice without being extreme 🫣

That’s just a headcanon though, feel free to think of it however you like 👀

i changed the hazmat suit design a little because i um. want to draw their faces KJDSNFKGDF , also gave them little harness thingies and ..collars ^_^ BC IM INSANE? we’ve kind of talked about the ‘lore’ for it a little, like the idea that theyre controlling clones of themselves avatar style, so theyre able to die repeatedly and not face severe consequences ignoring the severe mental distress it gives them. i think its fun when characters get to die badly and its not a huge deal… dungeon meshi style <3
