woke up at 12 am and all i can think abt the empire and the sticklers like im sorry but i am so not normal abt their alliance it means the entire world to me.....

like especially the trust JUMPER has in the empire. ive been chewing through her s6 vods and the speed at which she went from fearing and wanting revenge bc they killed her and ro to her trusting them and wanting them to trust her was actually crazy

and this is all bc mapicc and minute chased clown away from her base bc he was hunting her down and she had no one else to protect her w her team offline. like yeah other people like zam and pangi were on but realistically how can they fight a clownpierce when zam was, at that point, a pacifist and pangi is pangi? /lh

them choosing to help jumper that day changed soooo much, it led to her warning the empire of her and reks silly end portal prank and warning them abt her trap,, and her taking direct action to build a bridge between their two teams which was both only possible bc yk. mapicc and minutes inherent bias for some people on the team ANDDDD their sense of honour when it comes to who they choose to fight

like as much as the empire WANTS to be the bad guys this season, its quite funny how they just ARENT (yet) bc they have actual honour and morals in comparison to the blindfold bandits (flame, mane, wemmbu, and pentar i believe) who have been terrorizing the server, especially low heart players, since the beginning.

bc like choosing to protect jumper from clown was just...THE most minute and mapicc thing ever like theyre both just like that; i dont think either of them see any purpose behind terrorizing and hunting players like jumper, pangi, squiddo, etc who both dont really involve themselves in pvp and who dont HAVE the capability to fight back if theyre jumped by someone w like 20 hearts

like dont get me wrong theyll attack players who are weaker than them, theyre not moral and faultless people, like minute killing sb for a heart, mapicc wanting to kill kab for a heart bc he thinks she has too many (before he hit 20 hearts), etc but those are players who have CHOSEN to involve themselves in pvp and to kill other players—

and im crying wait i hate devotion duo so fucking bad bc ive just now realized mapiccs standards for players he will kill vs ones he deems needing his protection if he knows theyre being hunted by like mane, clown, or wemmbu is literally identical to ZAMS own standards for players he will involve himself in conflict for vs those he wont (aka innocent players vs those who choose to involve themselves in Situations)

anyways! im just yapping atp but idc. yeah so mapicc and minutes inherent sense of honour in regards to fighting and pvp on top of hopperclock-duality friendship buff from previous season(s) has lead to one of the most interesting alliances ever like if u could not tell i love and adore this alliance so very much bc the foundation of it is trust and friendship rather than power or how they can benefit one another

Ok so *tucks hair behind ear lol* this is actually a curse that behaves like a virus cast by Queen Chrysalis before she turns to stone at the very end of the series teehee

The curse originally only impacts unicorns, who spread it through biting others, which is why Starlight (and most other unicorns) dont have bite marks, or are disembowled to a certain degree

Earth ponies and pegasi however, can only contract the virus through bite marks from infected unicorns, which is why they are often very gruesome and gorey looking, typically turning at a much faster rate than the unicorns who were originally affected

The curse (or the changeling virus) rewires ponies to only be able to feed off of love, in the same way changelings used feed off love, causing normal food to longer be nutritional anymore. Due to the virus blocking magic in infected unicorns, and regular ponies lacking the same abilities changelings have to consume love, the only way they can get the same satisfaction is by consuming others

The only unicorns uninfected (outside of the Crystal Empire) are Twilight and Rarity, as Twilight cast a protection shield around her and her friends when she realized that Queen Chrysalis was charging up one final spell (unknowingly saving the two of the from the curse). Princess Cadence, her family and any unicorns in the Crystal Empire are also unaffected due to the magic properties of the Crystal Heart protecting them

Each species acts different from each other once they fully succumb to the virus, but theyre all incredibly dangerous

●Unicorns are more likely to stalk ponies and attack at night, especially if the pony is (or looks similar to) someone they knew pre-infection. They hang back just far enough that theyre not an immediate threat, but will always keep targets within their line of sight and strike when least expected.

●Pegasi typically hunt in small flocks (two or three), and take to the skies if able. Theyre especially odd as they almost work together, similar to pre-infection, however the goal is to separate groups of ponies together to make them easier to overcome. Despite the teamwork, they are territorial with their prey once caught.

●Earth ponies are known to charge other ponies, (including the infected). Actively hunting and chasing them down until the victims tire out and are caught, or are lost. Often stopping at nothing to catch their prey, unless they are completely unable to move, the chase never ends. Should they catch up, they often stampede over their victim, efficiently subduing them.

and the other thing bc i feel like the audience really hated pretty much every single character - obviously predominantly the female characters - and w livia and janice i don’t get it like i really don’t understand why it’s so intense but w for example the dislike for carmela and dr melfi i find it to be v revealing. besides the fact that ppl thought the therapy scenes were ‘boring’ ppl hated carmela and melfi for resenting tony/questioning him. like.. ppl idolized tony bc they wanted to watch a mob show and the only characters they could like were the ones that were ‘competent’ in this world.

the hatred for aj and jackie jr is also really interesting in regards to this. tony ponders all the ways he failed in raising aj, by not making him tough enough. aj is coddled and spoiled but the violence that he’s on the periphery of still invades his life, still looms. and thats why he’s tied to jackie jr who characters keep repeating about that his father wanted to keep him out of this life, wanted better for him (the same way tony does for aj - while still looking down on that something better for being something softer). they don’t understand that the shield they put up for their children was as thin as a piece of paper!! they just don’t get details and explanations but its still there im sorry but the poison does genuinely drip through. its vague silhouettes and strange gut feelings and hints and shapes and theyre not privy to any of it but their whole life and sense of identity revolves around it. its about aj going to junior gripping a knife in his jacket that he drops before he can even take it out because he’s sweating and shaking too much. he runs out and screams ‘he shot my dad!’ like a little kid that feels a great injustice and nobody is getting it bc its so clearly not how the world works. its jackie jr dying by chasing something he didn’t understand. ultimately it’s a show about coming in at the end - the last of an empire. cannibalizing the younger generation.

gummy (pronounced goo-me. very important) is an irken that has never stepped foot on irk. he doesnt know anything about his own species other than things that hes heard from secondary sources. ruthless savages and lazy pigs that want nothing than to kill and conquer every single planet in the galaxy. and these sources arent wrong! irkens really are Just Like that

gummy wasnt raised by the empire. he never meets any irkens until later on in his life. hes so far away from any irken territory that it was basically impossible for him to meet any, up until recently/in the future.

he was found eating some gourds and other plants in the backyard of a random retired alien. retired alien who completely accidentally raised him into a mini-grump, even teaching him to speak and read, imparting knowledge on the tiny little irken pest, for a total of five months-ish before his landlord came in and found out he was providing an irken with refuge, and caused gummys sorta-parental-figure to kick gummy out and ultimately end up dying because of him.

all because that alien showed some mercy to an irken. pity? i dunno what goes on in grumps mind hes a complete enigma to me. all i know is that hes an ass and him dying wasnt any grand act of self-sacrifice, only an inevitability.

but gummy still sees it as sacrifice, years later.

he hates irkens.

he holds on to that view when he meets bink! his second guardian-of-sorts. kinda. shes a teenager still at this point but gummy is also like the irken equivalent of ten so it works out.

he was living rugged for a bit. without grumps, he had no steady roof to live under. stealing bits and bobs and food to carry him along, until he stole from the wrong person and ended up a captive to binks crew. space pirates.... i love space.

but wait! theres more!

gummy had a map. one he kept from grumps! he lies and says that its a treasure map, and that the place marked on it holds riches beyond any of the pirates wildest imaginations!

he doesnt know if it actually does, or not. hes never been, and grumps had gummy leave before telling him anything about it.

bink reveals herself as the ship's captain and chooses to take gummy's word as truth. hes still a captive, and if this results in a wild goose chase, she and her crew get to punish him as they please.

when the marked location ends up having nothing for them, the crew get angry. this irken lied to them! they should throw him out in deep space and watch his body implode!

bink. comes from a species that had their planet conquered by the irken empire, under miyuki's ruling. she hates irkens. dedicates herself to ruining the lives of as many irkens as she can. she holds that dedication one step below keeping herself and her crew alive. she believes that no irken is capable of good. no irken deserves to live, if she has any say in it.

she has every reason to follow through with her threats, to take her crews advice and let him die painfully.

she doesnt kill him.

she lets him live. forces him to become a crew member. not a respected one! hes like the towel boy of space pirates. worse than an irken drone -- and those have literally nothing.

eventually, he gains... somewhat of a place, with her and the rest of the crew. they start recognizing him as a person. it helps that hes grown up quite a decent bit.

bink even starts to enjoy having him around. his position was meant to be something to be hated, a power she could hold over him -- but he wormed his way into her heart. a terrible thing.

something happens. something big.

bink gets hurt, half of the crew wiped out.

and its gummys fault. proving what bink, and what everyone else thinks about irkens, to be true.

they have no good in them. not a single bit.

gummy is forced into a bad position. there is no place for him in this universe, and he isnt taking his chances with the irken empire -- most hated enemy by literally everyone that's ever heard of them -- so he takes his chances in other places.

space clowns. are an entirely separate ordeal that i wont explain fully here but basically its like a cult where you lose all your sense of self. if youre a space clown you are no longer an individual. youre expected to do everything for the cause. mayhem and mischief and suffering and mania everywhere.

gummy didnt really understand the whole loss-of-self part of space clownism... his personality is a bit too strong for it to be completely erased like that. but his time as a clown still has some of his most miserable moments!

he hates irkens more than ever, but more than that, he just really hates himself.

he wasnt raised irken, but he still ended up becoming one.

the only one that breaks him out of it is another irken, years later.

they taught him to be better. taught him how to show the kindness that hed forgotten, taught him how to fall in love -- and even they still end up dead.

it was a completely avoidable death. they didnt tell him how to save them. they didnt want saving.

they hated irkens too.

i already have every major point of gummys story fleshed out..., the only conclusive sorta ending i have in mind is him reconciling with and hugging bink. thats it. shes an old coot now. her species doesnt last as long as his does. shes going to die too, eventually. everyone just fucking leaves him man and i made it that way. this is awful. i love it. i should create more people for him to befriend and lose. its a beautiful horrible cycle.

Technoblade starts the stream in his house. the first thing he does is put another piece of fanart in his house, this one by snumkt on twitter. he goes to l’manburg, where he sneaks around very sneakily (/s) and replaces anti-techno propaganda with pro-techno fanart, stating that “If they take it down, it’s ‘cause they hate fanartists.” (00:09:18). 

While placing posters, Techno checks in on his hound army, and reveals that he thinks someone had been in the area, because a wolf teleported to him while he was home. He thinks someone placed water, the dog stood up, and then teleported. (00:18:25)

After breeding the dogs, Techno reads donations and one of the questions is about the SBI family dynamics. Here’s what he says at 00:20:55 

“‘Hey, are you uncomfortable with being part of the SBI family dynamic?’ Uh, I don’t really- it’s not a matter of being uncomfortable, it’s just a matter of people making massive revisions to my character and the lore three months into the story without telling me, and it’s like, ‘no, that doesn’t- the story doesn’t- so many things don’t make sense now! What?? What???’ but if you want to make like, fanart of it, it’s fine”

He then meets up with Philza, who is being escorted by Tubbo. Techno goes to Philzas house, and hides in his new basement. He joins their VC and finds Phil, Wilbur, Tommy, and Tubbo. talking about birthdays. Tubbo goes to the basement and sees Technos invis particles, hits him, and he is revealed. Techno kills tubbo, and declares it canon as a joke. 

He goes back outside, deafened on Discord, and puts down more propaganda. Philza joins his call, and they meet up to try and find Technos stolen items. They don’t find the barrel, but they do find a hidden room under the podium. Techno puts a piece of propaganda in the room. (00:43:30)

While Phil is killing an enderman, Ranboo finds them, and is killed by Techno. (00:46:25) 

Techno takes Phil to see his Hound Army, but they’re stopped by Tubbo. Techno tries to pretend to be Ranboo, but Ranboo goes up to them, so his cover is blown. Techno’s chased to the portal. Phil and Techno meet again in the Nether, and they go back to the house. 

At the house, Phil and Techno talk about the SBI characters, the sellout timer goes off, and then they go downstairs to cure a zombie villager. While it’s curing, Techno gathers books to make a new bow, with Power V, Punch II, Unbreaking III, Flame, and Mending. 

Philza reveals that Ranboo is coming over to give Phil a present. Techno seems excited at this, mostly at the fact that Ranboo can be his new bows test subject. 

Before Ranboo arrives, the villager is cured, and they find out it is a nitwit, meaning it can’t trade or get a job. Techno and Phil start working on a tunnel to bring the villager to a lava pool, so the other villagers won’t gossip and raise their prices. 

Ranboo joins the call at 01:15:35, right before they’re going to bring the villager to the lava pool. He gifts Techno and Phil four Netherite ingots.

After struggling to get the villager to the right height, Techno forces Ranboo to boat the villager into the lava. Ranboo escapes by throwing a pearl, and the villager dies.

Ranboo, Techno, and Phil talk about duping Netherite, and the current plot, and then Techno finds a zombie baby villager. It’s caught in a boat, and Techno nametags it ‘Orphan.’ They talk about the cobblestone tower, Philzas’ death to a baby zombie, and how if you don’t see a child's parents, you should assume that they are an orphan and attack them. 

Techno talks to Jack Manifold through chat about his axe. Techno, Philza, and Ranboo go around and look for zombie villagers. Techno finds an igloo, with two villagers. Techno was going to try and turn them into zombie villagers, but decides to not when he finds out that theres a 0% chance of that happening on Easy mode. 

They all go back to Orphan, and bully it when they find out it still hasn’t grown up. Techno and Ranboo make a joke about how it’s traumatized, so it’ll be funny and can be come a minecraft youtuber. please get some help. (01:48:15)

After Orphan grows up, Techno trades and gets the Bottle of Enchanting trade for one emerald. They all joke about Techno owning an orphanage at 01:51:35.

Phil, Techno, and Ranboo decide go to the Hound Army, but Techno remembers that Ranboo is part of L’manburg, and tries to kill him (with his new bow) when they enter the nether. He doesn’t succeed, and he continues fighting until he drinks and invis pot on the Prime Path. Techno and Phil meet up in the Bee Dome, where Ranboo finds them. Techno tries to kill him, but runs out of arrows. 

After reading donations, Techno, Ranboo, and Phil are back together at the Bee Dome, and they decide to team up in case someone finds them. They go outside of the Dome, and chase Jack Manifold out of his own country.

Manifold joins the VC, and they try to blame Punz on his attempted murder. After Manifold says “i feel there has been an attempt on my life,” Techno says that that’s how he greets people in his country.

Manifold asks if they want to help him get revenge on Punz, and Techno agrees. They gather more people, and by the time they get to Punz’s tower, their party is Manifold, Techno, Phil, Ranboo, Fundy, and Antfrost. Punz is in the Nether, so they wait until he gets back. 

Ranboo and Techno have a whisper conversation:

Ranboo: are you just going to jump fundy

Techno: no im gonna make jack 1v1 LMAO

Ranboo: good plan

While Fundy is taking a screenshot of Techno for his thumbnail, Philza attacks Fundy with a crossbow and his sword. He claims it was because he was getting bored. 

In the same spirit, Techno asks if they could kill Manifold to pass the time. The mob, which now includes Fundy, chases Manifold. He runs to the Holy Land, and the mob boos him.  Techno tells Antfrost to kill Manifold, and that the mob won’t tell that he was killed in the Holy Land. Manifold hands Antfrost his sword. 

While Antfrost debates killing Manifold or not, the mob chants ‘peer pressure!’ at him. Techno quickly realizes that Antfrost isn’t in the VC, and is extremely confused. The sword gets handed to Fundy, who gets into a battle with Manifold. Philza tells Fundy that he’s forgiven, if he can kill Manifold. The battle calms, and neither of the contestants die.

Techno convinces the mob to go to the pit trap, and tries to lure someone onto the trapped blocks using rotten flesh. Fundy takes the bait, but moves out of the way before the button is pressed. Antfrost sneaks up behind him and punches him into the pit. Fundy survives the fall, but is shot by Manifold to death. 

During the commotion, Punz makes his way back to his house, and the mob moves towards him to end his life. Manifold says that he’s going to kill Punz, and Techno says that the mob’ll have his back. He tells the mob to not have Manifold’s back. 

at 02:17:00, Punz joins the call, and is confused as to why Manifold wants to kill him. Manifold explains that Punz tried to kill him, siting his source as Technoblade. 

also, 2:17:15 technoswear!

Techno encourages Punz, saying “Punz, he actually dropped his sword by accident and now I have it, so it’d be really easy to beat him up,” and “he also just killed in the holy land, so you have a sort of...religious motivation to take him out.”

Punz tries to fight Manifold without armor (Manifold is wearing a full enchanted set of armor, with a Netherite chestplate and everything else Diamond), which fails miserably, and Manifold is killed. 

Techno decides to fight Manifold with his goons (the mob) for the audience retention, and Manifold’s quickly killed. The final hit was from CaptainPuffy. Ponk rushes in and grabs some of Manifold’s items. Puffy takes the rest.

Manifold complains about getting bullied, so Techno gives him his sword back and tells him to avenge himself. While looking for Ponk (or Punz? this is kinda unclear), Punz swoops in and kills Manifold in two hits. 

Manifold finds Ponk and chases after him, trying to kill him. The mob follows, and Ranboo kills Ponk with thorns. Manifold takes Ponks stuff. 

Right after respawning, Ponk was blown up by a creeper, and Techno claimed both as canon. 

The mini fights continue, and Manifold is killed by Punz. 

Ranboo changes the ‘Days since last war crime’ sign to 0.

Phil tells Techno that he’s going back to the base, and the L’manburgians question him as to what base he’s talking about. Phil tells Fundy that he ripped off his ankle shackles and left. While they talk, Techno starts running back to the base, and Ranboo whispers “lets run back” to him. Ranboo follows Techno, but quickly looses him.

Phil and Techno join a separate VC together and they go back to the base. 

At 02:29:15, Phil says “I trust you” to Techno and I am going to cry. 

Right before getting to the base, Phil drinks some honey, and Techno says “that’s the only thing we have honey for, now that we’ve uh...uh I guess you don’t know about that.” He’s referring to the Vault, I think, because the redstone required honey to work properly. 

Philza responds, “the honey- wait, what did you use the honey for?” 

“uhhh....food.” Techno, for some reason, doesn’t want to show Phil the vault. 

Ranboo whispers to Techno: “My alliance isnt with lmanburg, its with the people who help me. phil helped me.”

out loud, Techno laughs about it with phil, saying, “well, I’ve stabbed him like twelve times this week, so, I [laughs] I don’t know if that entirely qualifies here.”

Techno messages Ranboo back with “new phone who this” 

Ranboo replies, “no one,” and then, “:)”

Going back to the honey talk, Philza asked if Techno had been hiding anything diabolical from him, and Techno asks if he would do such a thing. Philza guesses several things he could use honey for, such as a flying machine, TNT dupers, and a door.

Techno takes him to the vault. 02:32:00. i LOVE peoples reactions to the vault, it’s always so good. Philza responds with a surprised ‘HOLY SHIT’ and some laughing. Techno also confirms my math of 55 withers.

BOOKS I (RE)READ IN 2018: FURTHERMORE BY TAHEREH MAFI

Father disappeared from Ferenwood with only a ruler, almost three years ago. But she will have to travel through the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, where down can be up, paper is alive, and left can be both right and very, very wrong. Her only companion is Oliver whose own magic is based in lies and deceit. Alice must first find herself—and hold fast to the magic of love in the face of loss." "Red was ruby, green was fluorescent, yellow was simply incandescent. Color was life. Color was everything. Color, you see, was the universal sign of magic." "Love, it turned out, could both hurt and heal." "Narrow-mindedness will only get you as far as Nowhere, and once you're there, you're lost forever.” "Alice was an odd girl, even for Ferenwood, where the sun occasionally rained and the colors were brighter than usual and magic was as common as a frowning parent." "Making magic is far more interesting than making sense." So I actually read this book a few months ago and then recently reread it via audio so I could remember all the details for this review. I was first introduced to Tahereh Mafi’s work through her book Shatter Me, her debut novel. Ironically, it wasn’t through any of the ways I normally hear about books - Booktube, Goodreads, my best friend, Booklr - but from my husband’s aunt. She runs - or used to run, not sure if she’s still doing it - a book review blog. And she posted a review of Shatter Me and I was like, “What a weird, interesting writing style, lemme check this out.” At this point the entire Shatter Me Trilogy plus novellas had been published and I devoured all of them (still need to review those, too). So when I heard Tahereh Mafi was writing a middle grade book, I got super excited! Especially because this was during a time when I was too stressed out to read any YA, since most of the YA I like involves having to save the world and all the stress that entails. I need to lay out some trigger warnings real quick: the main character, Alice? Her mom is incredibly abusive, both emotionally and physically. It’s treated as not such a big deal in the book, which is honestly the story’s only real flaw, but it’s bad. It took me seven tries and resorting to an audiobook (and even with a fantastic narrator, that short audiobook took me almost a month to get through) because the abuse was so bad. So:

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL ABUSE OF A CHILD BY THEIR PARENT

Let’s get started, yo! First of all, the setting. OMG. See, I love tthis thing called Victorian fairy tales, which is something you can find in books like Mary Poppins - these super fantastical bits of whimsy that just warm your heart and make you grin because they’re so creative and fun. In the Mary Poppins books, you can jump into chalk drawings and go to a circus amidst the stars and make friends with a woman who sells living candy-cane horses. In Catherynne Valente’s Fairyland series, there are shadow balls and talking phonographs. And in Furthermore, there’s light raining down from the sky in literal drops, sticks of magic you use like money, and forests full of invisible berries. The way the world is put together and described, so full of color and imagination, is awesome and beautiful and I could picture it perfectly. It reminded me in all the best ways of books like The Phantom Tollbooth (one of my favorites). But I wouldn’t want to live there, because Ferenwood is full of colorism and ick. Alice, the female lead, is an albino in a world where color is important and the darker you are, the more magical you’re considered to be. So Alice gets treated like garbage. 

Also I think Alice may be autistic, but I don’t know if she’s deliberately coded autistic or if Tahereh Mafi did it by accident while trying to make Alice eccentric, but she comes across as autistic. I’ve actually begun to pay more attention to that sort of the thing in recent years, being autistic myself, and I see it a lot - authors giving their characters autistic characteristics, often without meaning to. I just touch on it here because Alice is already treated badly for being albino, but she’s also considered a freak because of the way she behaves - like an autistic preteen. And I wonder if Tahereh Mafi did that on purpose as a sort of commentary or not, because while Alice is treated badly by the people of Ferenwood for her behavior, the Narrator (who is an actual character in the story; love when that happens) always sides with Alice in this regard. The storyline is sweet and I love it. Alice tries to compete in the magical testing all the preteens do on their twelfth birthday, and so she dances. And her dancing is magical but it’s not Magical, you know? So she fails the test. Well, turns out a boy who passed the test the year before, Oliver (the brat), needs Alice’s help fulfilling a quest - rescuing Alice’s missing dad. So they go on a quest together, although Alice hates Oliver (and rightly so, he’s rude). They go to a dozen different and cool places, all of which are dangerous and all of which are different. I wish we could’ve spent more time in those places but I understand why we didn’t. The only annoying thing is there’s an origami fox on the cover but it only pops up in one of the worlds for like two pages and then it’s gone and I thought we could spend more time both in that world and with that creature since it ended up on the cover. But alas, not. I understand why - middle grade is often cursed to be short, especially if it’s the author’s first MG novel ever. Once you get big and bad like Rick Riordan you can start tossing out gihugic tomes like Son of Neptune or Blood of Olympus on the regular. Oliver’s reason for needing Alice was one I didn’t see coming, nor was her magical talent - a talent they hint at throughout the book but never explain until near the end, at the perfect moment. I thought it was an interesting commentary on how young girls perceive themselves, that Alice hates this marvelous, amazing talent she has of bringing color into the world from nothing...because she can’t use it to change how she looks. Society has trained her already, by the age of twelve, to discount something incredible about herself because she can’t use it to make herself into what society wants her to be. That’s pretty impressive for a book this short. I loved some of the more deliberate messages in the work - the thing I mentioned about society’s pressures on young girls, and also that it’s okay to tell boys to screw off if they’re mean to you, and to have hope and to look for second chances (Alice thinks she only has one chance to pass the test and believes her life is over when she fails, only to find out she can try again the next year). I love all of that, and the lyrical and whimsical quality of the prose, and the world building is so creative and also makes me a bit hungry (people eat magic in this book, among other things; I wonder what it tastes like). Now...let’s talk about the abuse. That’s my biggest issue with the book. Alice’s mother is a total bitch. And not in a cool, kickass way like the lady in the show Empire. She’s vicious, she’s cruel, and she’s abusive. Alice knows - and the Narrator confirms - that she turned bad when her husband went missing, and apparently the worry for him and the strain of raising four kids on her own is making her hard and sad, but I don’t give a shit. I was hoping Tahereh Mafi would’ve gone all Hansel and Gretel on this lady and when Alice comes home with her dad, the wife’s dead or something. She beats Alice (at one point she beat Alice for chasing a boy out of the place where she was sleeping, even though he kept staring at her in her sleeping clothes, because apparently the boy - Oliver - had the right to break into their barn at 3AM and ogle Alice???), she verbally abuses Alice, she sends her to bed regularly without dinner, is constantly criticizing, won’t hug her or kiss her, and - this one really got me, for some reason - forces her to do illegal things. Those invisible berries I mentioned? Alice can find them and bring back whole baskets because of her magical gift, and so her mom sends her out to pick them all the time. If she brings home enough, her mom smiles. If she doesn’t, her mom yells and calls her names and sometimes beats her. Guess what? Picking those berries is illegal. We don’t find this out until much later in the book, but it is. The thing I didn’t like about the berries is that Oliver, who’s thirteen, is less concerned about Alice’s mother beating her for not picking enough contraband berries and instead focuses on how her ability to find the berries in the first place means Alice has really impressive magic. NOBODY seems to care how much Alice is being abused, not even the Narrator. The Narrator sympathizes with Alice’s hurt feelings and despair over her missing Father, but it’s never objectively stated that her mom is abusing her AND SHE IS. Yeah, her mom is sooo glad to have her back after Alice almost dies on her trip with Oliver, but so what? My roommate’s mom is so abusive that my roommate’s clergy leaders, doctors, and psychological therapist all said my roommate needed to cut ties with said mom, even though my roommate’s mom has also exhibited the same kind of “oh baby I’m so sorry, I love you so much” bullshit. That’s what abusers do. So I hate Alice’s mom. She literally makes her daughter feel like if she doesn’t risk her life numerous times AND bring her father back, there is no chance her mother will ever love her. And if she pulls that stuff off (which she does), then MAYBE her mother will love her. Nuh-uh. Nope. Hate that bitch. Other than that, I really loved this book. The characters felt real (Alice is me, but without my anger), Even the ones I didn’t like were still REAL, and well-drawn. The world building and word choice is fantastic. Basically, if you can get past the evil mom, read this book. World Building: 1 star Realism: 1 star Word Choice: 1 star Plot: 1 star Characterization: 1 star - ¼ star because Oliver Newbanks is an obnoxious little creep - 1 star because the mom is AN ABUSIVE EVIL BITCH - ¼ star because NOBODY DOES ANYTHING ABOUT THAT +½ star because Alice is amazing and has a genius brain and I love her Total score: 4/5 stars Would I Buy It: Yes! I own it and loved it enough I got the sequel for Christmas (in...2017...I've been sitting on this review for months...)! Would I Recommend: yes, but with trigger warnings. Again, highly abusive evil bitch mom who somehow doesn’t die.

Listen, I know that they're handling story lines in another country right now, and that theyre about as far away from Beau's parents as she could possibly hope for, but I just cant help but think of the future.

They return to the Empire. They're, what, level fifteen at this point? And Beau is stronger, wiser, and more stubborn than she's ever been. And they're in the middle of trying to weed out corruption and evil in her homeland, something she is looking forward to eagerly. But then they see him.

Her father is there, part of the snake's head they have to cut off. And he recognizes her. Recognizes his position, and the way the political winds are shifting. And he plays up the misunderstood father card. Laments about days long gone, tries to win her over as if nothing has ever happened.

And Beau's face softens. Her hands relax. She even begins to tear up a bit. She steps forward, her head bent low...

And the she fucking decks him in the face.

She smirks, he'd always been easy to fool, and every illusion of reconciliation vanishes from both of them. Her expression fills with satisfaction and rage, and his shifts into unbridled terror. Beau then gets to chase down the man who abused and neglected her and pummel him until he cant beg for mercy anymore.

I dont know guys, I'm really excited for the retribution possibilities.

Malak & Magali (Arcane Elements Cycle; Defiance)

okay these two young (*snorts* theyre a couple hundred years old actually but whatever) magicians are too adventurous for their own good. they first met when they were in their early teens, coincidentally on two separate missions that led them to the same place, where they helped each other out and a friendship bloomed in the process, but they parted ways immediately after and never thought they’d meet again. WELL. they actually ended up running into each other quite often, grew close, and eventually joined the Defiance (that shady organization dedicated to keeping the Sorcerer and his Elites in check). they proceeded to fall in love and still go around looking for trouble. they often run into the Elites (particularly Luisa and Ritika). more often than the Defiance would prefer, but they get away with things because they’re valuable.

malak was born in london in the 19th century, his mother died when he was a baby, and his father died when he was a child. he should have grown up an apprentice to a scientist of some sort but discovered an entrance to the Empire somehow and once he found this place he never wanted to leave. he spent his teenage years running around, chasing myths and magic, mostly just looking for fun and mischief. uhh touch starved, mild abandonment issues. chaotic neutral? still in development, we’ll see what else he’s got in store.

magali was born in the black castle. she had some special power that caught the interest of the sorcerer himself when she was a small child, and it freaked her parents out so they took her and ran away, tried some experiments to get rid of her powers and hopefully shake off whatever the sorcerer was so intrigued by, but it backfired and they just ended up making things Bad and now theyre dead? i don’t think that was her fault but yeah they havent been around since she was in her mid-teens at the latest, and by then she was running around with malak. her magic is all messed up from her parents screwing around. i don’t know the details yet. i think she first met malak while trying to find a way to fix her magic, and he helps a lot now. he helps with her mental health too, she experiences maladaptive daydreaming and some issues with reality. she’s also got a weird obsession/phobia thing regarding the Sorcerer? she hasnt seen him in person since she was like six and goes to some lengths to avoid him, as her parents instilled deep fears and also accidentally some deep interest. at the same time she hears anything about him and she’s very 👀

they both slowed in aging in their early twenties, (the younger a person’s aging beings to slow, the more magically powerful they are supposedly). they have an extremely tight bond, they hold absolutely no secrets from each other,

i’m not sure how much they’ll appear in the main books. i know they won’t be very significant in the first book, but i’m hoping to write them their own thing.

Ritika & Ayuka (Arcane Elements Cycle; Elites)

okay i have a lot of friends-to-lovers. this is another.

ritika and ayuka were both born in and both grew up in the black castle, only a year or two apart in age. they were friends from the beginning. i’m not really sure about ayuka’s story yet, but ritika had a terrible childhood due to an extremely dysfunctional family, and while ayuka never intended to become an Elite (she stood out in some way and the Sorcerer went “yes— that one” and ayuka was very “who, me??”), ritika worked very hard (understatement) to get her position on the council. they’re about as old as malak and magali, and i’m not sure at what point they knew they were interested in each other sexually/romantically, but it was before their aging slowed. i think ayuka’s aging a little slower than ritika so… that’s interesting. anyway ayuka’s like a spymaster and kind of a detective, her position in the Elites is known as “Beauty”, nicknamed after an aphrodite-like mythological figure in the Empire, known for irresistible charm, and ritika’s is Mischief, who was actually Beauty’s lover in the legends, so. (*finger guns*) ritika’s work is brutal, she’s like the police/warden of the castle as well as… basically the Sorcerer’s thug, takes care of the smaller matters he’s too busy to attend to himself, like hunting down individual members of the Defiance.

they’re a bit murder-happy? they’ve both got a little too much interest in violence, though while ritika has a serious sadistic side, ayuka just likes the excitement of almost-violence and would prefer not to go through with it. the other elites are always waiting for the day the Sorcerer’s had enough of their “complications” but they’re really good at their jobs and he keeps letting them off the hook and it frustrates their coworkers to no end cause they could never get away with that kind of misconduct. they do pretty much whatever they want. as long as the job’s done well, the sorcerer doesn’t seem to care much how it’s done. they’ve had a few run-ins with malak and magali. ritika’s tried to kill magali before. there may be a love triangle with another elite girl, but i’m waiting to hear what eri wants to do. i love my murder girls.

i am also not sure how significant they will be in the first book, but you will definitely meet them both, ritika will make an impression on asteria, and i have plans for all four of these characters in the second book

Ancestor and descendant

It has been a long day. Jaisnt slept on his couch while Zenira was in his cellar looking over at all his firearms, making sure they were all functioning correctly. The last couple of months, Zenira finally got Jaisnt's trust and even enough to help him around the hive. Though mainly checking on the weaponry he makes. Even she worries about him overworking too much.

As she was about to check the next firearm, she heard some noises coming from upstairs, loud thumping noises as if someone just entered inside. Stopping what she's doing, she quickly grabbed her spear and slowly walked up and out of the cellar and checked around. Jaisnt is still asleep which leaves the second floor.

Before she was about to head up the stairs, she was soon on the floor as she was knocked down as she exited the doorway of the cellar. The noise instantly woke Jaisnt up as Zenira quickly got up, preparing charge her spear on the intruder as it moves it away and uses their palm to knock her back down. Groaning, she quickly crawled back as Jaisnt got his hand gun ready and approached the invader who had their back facing him. "Who are you!" Jaisnt demanded. "What do you want?"

The troll stood where they were, hands up in the air as soon as they heard the sound of a gun drawn on them. They slowly turned around and looked at Jaisnt directly in the eyes. "Title, The Commander. Leader of the Imperial Fleet. Also... the leader of the regime of rebellions. Real name, Korvan Rodnik." The troll spoke. Jaisnt stood where he was and slowly lowered his gun, surprised that his ancestor is here, right in front of his own eyes. "I believe we have met. Though not enough for us to properly speak to each other considering I left that temple."

"Ancestor... why? Why are you here?" Jaisnt asked while grabbing Zenira's arm and bring her back up.

"There's a bit I wish I can tell you, but not right now." The Commander answered. "Though I can tell you how I am... alive. I can tell you that it was overwhelming, as you can see from the reaction when I saw you and your friend... by the way, who was your friend that was with you? All I can remember was that she had-"

"Rings around her horns." Jaisnt answered. "Yeah... she... she was my moirail. That day we both went to the temples you used to be in to find any more journals of you. She came along to hopefully find anything involving her ancestor and why she has the rings around her horns."

"What happened to her?"

"... I don't know. She disappeared." Jaisnt said timidly, not wanting to think of it. "I don't want to talk about it. At this point, I've had people that were in my quads that just suddenly disappear without a trace. It's been hard for me to cope with something like that."

"I understand." The Commander said, staring at Zenira who's been eyeing him angrily. "I'm... terribly sorry for what I did to you, miss. Normally I would knock on the front door, but I wanted to be careful. I am a trained fleet commander, after all."

Only response Zenira gave is sticking her tongue out at him. Jaisnt only chuckled as she walked away and sat on the couch. "Um... her name's Zenira." Jaisnt said. "She's an ex-feral troll. She sorta broke into my hive to get food and I have been teaching her on how to normally live in troll society and been letting her help with me around here."

"I see." His ancestor responded. "Is she always..."

"Quiet? Yes. She's a mute." Jaisnt answered once more. "She can talk, but she just... refuses to. Even I don't know. She wrote to me that I'm not ready to know."

"Interesting. Never met an individual that is a mute but can talk... just refuses to. Usually it's when they don't like their voice or because they speak a different language."

"You think that's the case?"

"It's only what I assume. I just came here and knocked her down to the ground in self defense."

"But... you started it?"

"... Anyway..." His ancestor changed the subject as he finally felt awkward after that question. "I came here to make sure you were okay."

"What do you mean?" Jaisnt questioned. "Why would I not be okay?"

"This... has something to do as to why I'm alive." Korvan answered with concern in his voice. "The Resurrector knew he would have a descendant that would carry out his deeds. I told him that if I were to die that I need you to send the message to your descendant to resurrect me. It eventually happened. But... I wasn't the only one. Apprently word is going around that The Decapitator was revived a couple months after me and is stirring up things. To make matters worse, I intercepted a radio transmission that there's a fleet ship coming back."

"A... fleet ship?"

"Yes. The ship is called the Eye of Titan. The ship housed the ruthless to conquere planets, even sent out mercenaries or hunters to catch the beings and make them bow under the Empress." The Commander answered and continued. "Once they completed their mission, they were ambushed and their ship was set off course. They repaired the damages on their ship, but it would take a long time until it could get back on its original course back to Alternia. So they all went in cryostasis to wait it out. Eventually, they all woke up and now their ship is arriving soon. Inside housed the most feared mercenary, but theyr call her a hunter because of how she treats her prey. Her title, The Huntress, proves it. I met the woman... there's... nothing right when you talk to her. Like she's not even a troll. It's as if she's a monster. Everyone is terrified to speak to her and her coming back is not great news considering her reptuation."

"Who does she hunt?" Jaisnt questioned, but he already knows the answer to that.

"Mutants. Low bloods. Trolls that are betrayers to the empire." His ancestor answered once more. "When they tell her to hunt someone, she'll take the job and will kill them without any hesitation. Even enough to treat them like their animals by chasing them. She said that it's the fun in the hunt. It'd be too easy to just get the prey right then and there... monstrous woman. I don't even know if I'd call her that."

Jaisnt stood where he is. This was a lot to take in all at once. Even now that he was about to get ready to infiltrate a troll's mansion across from his forest. Elanti's ancestor coming to life and another feared one coming back is too much. "Is... she also alive?" Jaisnt stared at his ancestor and asked the last question he'll have.

Korvan looked at him for a moment in confusion. He didn't know what Jaisnt was talking about until he finally figured out what who he meant. "No... she's not alive. Though I don't think she'd forgive me." He stayed quiet and then breaks the silence by clearing his throat. "So... I hear that you are planning to break into someone's place?"

"How... did you know?"

"You being my descendant, and knowing I'm alive, you'd expect that I would snoop around and see what you're doing. I was the leader of the small band of rebels and I did a good number of infiltration and recon missions. Being the commander of the fleet has its perks. Have you got anything on this troll you're planning to break into?"

"Just that he throws parties a whole fucking bunch." Jaisnt answered. "Seriously. I feel like this guy has nothing better to do and just throws parties all the damn time."

"And what else...?"

"His name is Morrin Luccan. Blue blood and the descendant of The Forcer." Jaisnt responded and instantly, his ancestor's eyes widened as if he just saw a ghost. "Nothing much on him though."

"The Forcer... it can't be..." His ancestor whispered to himself. Jasint just stood there, confused and expecting an answer. "The Forcer... he was given that title because of the things he did... terrible things. I had the misfortune of seeing it with my own eyes. During the times I was with the fleet, The Forcer would capture low bloods and would put them in horrific situations, enough to just break them and brainwash them to becoms his servants. Though he would take low bloods with powerful psiionics and use them as the empires weapons. Their scars... from all the abuse they were put through and using their powers to the breaking point until they die... was saddening. Other than that, he also had something else on the side lines, but I could never figure out what it was. He had a device and up to this day I could never figure out what it does. The the only thing I know is that he always randomly disappear."

From the mention of a device, Jaisnt thought for a moment and instantly remembered something that his friend, Linith, was trying to accomplish all this time. "Wait, I think that device was a time machine. It could only make sense! He must be going either forward or backwards in time to do something."

"He has always that he's worried about his legacy... then... that means he's..."

"Going forward in time. Bringing the knowledge he knows to his descendant!"

"There must something that Morrin must have involving his ancestor." His ancestor said. "We have to find out what that is."

"In a couple of days. We'll infiltrate that place. He throws parties a fucking lot. We'll use that as our cover."
