#“due to my disability I sometimes need to use crutches”

I was in a disability support chat room at work, and said that when I use crutches, and someone asks why, I kind of mumble something about yeah disabled.... and it gets really awkward.
A really good suggestion I got was to say that my disability sometimes means I need to use them. This works really well, as any further questions would come across as intrusive, so people never ask more, it doesn't give out personal information and it's not rude.
I used crutches intermittently at work, and a friend would always say, ahhhh, what happened, are you ok??? And I'd reassure him that I was as ok as I could be, it was my disability but I was managing ok with it, hence why I was still at work. This would calm him down a bit.
Buuuuut, the next time he saw me use crutches he'd say ahhhh, what happened, are you ok???.....
I didn't mind though as he was really lovely and being kind to me, but it was literally every. single. time. Ha
Something I wish abled bodied people would understand is that just because I’m using a mobility aid doesn’t mean I’m “hurt” in that moment necessarily. They’re also preventative measures. Since I’ve began using my aids at work I’ve gotten so many versions of “what happened to you” that I genuinely cannot keep track. Nothing *happened*, sometimes people are just disabled.

I have a character in a wheelchair, in a school/society that isn't up to modern code and would not be very accessible to wheel around in. Her chair is on the cheap side (definitely not motorized), and is a little old fashioned/outdated. She can't stand unassisted or walk more than a few feet at a time due to pain and balance issues (I'm still working on exactly what her diagnosis should be. Maybe I'll send you an ask about that later if I can't figure it out on my own) Do you have any advice - in general, but particularly on how to portray her friends helping her get around without making her seem helpless or committing any other faux pas? So far I know:
1: They should never touch her actual chair or pick her up, and so
2: Their help is mostly going to be delegated to changing the environment, not her. Opening doors, walking ahead to find an alternate smoother path, etc. (What if she's somewhere where there is no way through? Is it alright to have her leave the chair and lean on them or something in an emergency? Or should I just avoid writing those situations, favoring perception at the cost of realism?)
They don't follow her around everywhere, they're her friends not her caretakers, so she does get around by herself often. Is there anything else I should think about or is this alright?
Hey!
Sometimes it can be okay for them to touch her mobility aid if she allows them to. The never-touch-a-mobility-aid advice is real but is mostly meant for strangers who think they're helping someone by kidnapping them. Many wheelchair users get around exclusively by someone else pushing their wheelchair, it's all about consent.
If she needs to get to a place where the only way in are stairs, she might ask her friends to lift her wheelchair up with her still in it. But the key is that it's her initiative, and she's the one calling the shots because it's a very vulnerable position to be in. You can check out wheelchair skills videos like this one. Being in this scenario is obviously not ideal, but this is what people simply have to do.
I'd also try to figure out if she can transfer (get out of wheelchair into X and vice versa) on her own or not - if she can get on the ground safely and then back up, she could potentially learn to go upstairs backwards on her butt and drag her wheelchair in one hand, step by step. If she can walk a bit, she can use her wheelchair as a crutch and hold the railing with the other; for walking she can do that by leaning against a wall or holding onto someone for support. But if another person is involved, consent and warnings are key: they can ask where they should grab her by, she can tell them to walk slower or stop, instruct them how to safely sit her back in her wheelchair before they start walking, all that. They shouldn't treat her like a ragdoll who can't speak the moment she needs physical help.
If it's a modern-ish society then she could ask her friends to call the place they're visiting to check how accessible it is. Calling and trying to get it out of people gets exhausting so the friends could learn to pre-call before making any meeting in a place. It's more just being considerate than anything else.
I wouldn't try to avoid realism; if the setting is inaccessible to wheelchair users then it should be shown, otherwise it should simply be accessible in the first place.
Realism of course will affect the "alternatives" when it comes to access. Every larger building has a back door to roll the garbage out, and in places where accessibility is uncommon to nonexistent, this will be the only ramp to the building. Behind-the-building dark alley garbage ramps are their whole entire thing. Same for finding smooth paths, in many places wheelchair users have to go on the road to be able to go anywhere and risk being hit by a car. My point is that these alternatives largely do exist, but they're not meant for disabled people even if there is no other alternative. Exploring this could also help with making your setting feel more real in general.
For many of the issues of "what about XYZ scenario?", if you were to put it in any search engine you will find mobility aid users trying to figure out the same thing or giving others advice because inaccessibility is still one of the biggest issues out here that we encounter every day. The extreme majority of the world is inaccessible, and we try to adapt as much as possible; unless your actual scenario involves magic or aliens then there's definitely some sort of solution for it that's probably on reddit already.
[Disclaimer: not all wheelchair users can get out of their wheelchair without specialized equipment like a hoist. I assume that this is not the case for this character considering she can walk a tiny bit, but please keep this fact in mind for more severely disabled characters.]

Hey quick question. Do you have any mobility aid or disability headcanons for the sinners or anyone from their Cantos?
~ 🦐
YES I DO. I am sooooo physically disabled so hiiii twirls my hair I think about this. I've given like all the sinners my problems teehee
Quick run down: everyone has PTSD and autism and some have ADHD. that's just how it is. They all stim in different ways.
Yi Sang is my physically disabled blorbo. I headcanon him as having EDS like me. He is the kind of person to not want to use aids because he doesn't want to be a burden on other people but Don saw him struggling with his joints and started putting cute bandaids on him and that lead to Faust getting him mobility tape. Later he gets a cane made with some spicebush wood interlaid in it as a gift from all the sinners.
Also has a lot of reproductive issues. Or did, before his hysterectomy. Now has chronic pain and issues from a badly done surgery. Also has symptoms of menopause.
Mentally he has something like DID/OSDD among other things. can and does willingly let his IDs use his body so it's not uncommon to see him acting different at times.
Faust will never admit to having any problems but she has A LOT of problems. She has nerve damage in her spine and has issues feeling sensations or emotions along with chronic pain.
Don Quixote doesn't specifically need any mobility aids but she has chronic pain from her burns and tight skin around where the burns were worst despite having no obvious scars anymore.
She also has an eating disorder for both human food and blood. She doesn't really feel hungry and is used to ignoring her needs but then when she does eat she tends to binge and over eat.
Of course she also has DID, schizophrenia, psychosis and paranoia.
Ryōshū has chronic pain from burns as well, along with breathing issues. She is underweight and has osteoporosis. She could really benefit from a lot of things but won't. I like to think since she lost her daughter she feels like she has no reason to take care of herself.
Meursault: aside from the obvious autism, he is prone is chronic migraines. Give him sunglasses....
Hong Lu has chronic pain from not very well done castration/nullification surgery done by his family. He also has a lot of issues stemming from low hormonal levels. He is blind in his jade eye, giving him very little depth perception. He should get a cane to help him feel how far away things are I think...
Heathcliff... need I say chronic pain? Also carpel tunnel. Wears wrist braces. Also has a lot of issues after his distortion, including wolf like attributes showing up when he gets too unstable. Also needs reading glasses!!!! (Canon pretty much shut up)
Ishmael has so many issues from her partial mermaid-ification. She is prone to skin rashes and dry skin. Tends to pick at her skin or scratch herself bloody. Needs to drink a lot of water. Her eyes are very sensitive to light. Also immune to a lot of pain relief medication due to both her mutation and the fact she's a redhead (a more extreme version of what irl redheads can have)
Mentally she also has OSDD and has an Ahab introject. On top of her canon OCD.
Rodya has an eating disorder and really bad Raynaud's syndrome, leading to insensitivity to cold and extreme burning sensation when warming up. She often wears gloves even when it's not that cold and always wears socks.
Sinclair: my lupus warrior... leads to a low immune system which leads to being a germaphobe. When flares are bad sometimes needs a cane or crutches.
Outis is in menopause and has really bad tinnitus. She has pretty bad arthritis in her shoulder joint and elbow from shooting a gun. Sometimes wears an arm sling or brace.
Gregor has POCS along side the obvious issues with his unstable arm. Also has arthritis and occasionally needs a cane.

Behind a cut so people don’t have to see me rant about my disabled, emotionally abusive dad.
So my dad fell twice in the last five days due to not listening to me and mom. He has Parkinson’s and if you dig through my posts you’ll see me talk about it, so I won’t go into it.
I don’t hate disabled people, just him. I don’t hate him for having Parkinson’s, I hate him for the abuse he inflicted on me and still inflicts on me with his disability as a crutch to get away with it. And I call out ableism when the problems we have with him are caused by the medical care system, because sometimes it’s not his fault.
But THIS situation IS his fault.
SO ANYWAY…
Last Friday, he fell because he wouldn’t stop rocking sideways every time he got up. He gets up with help and uses a walker, but he throws his weight around when he knows me and mom are two tiny women compared to a hulking huge man.
And he fell.
We had to call my aunt and uncle over to get his ass off the damn floor and onto his toilet commode so he could take a shit. Then they got him into bed. He claimed he was fine, and then on Tuesday he started griping that his lower back and buttcheek hurt on the left side. But he could walk and didn’t complain much after the initial gripe.
Today, he was all scrunched up in bed in a way that guarantees his back will hurt and made his pain worse, like I told him it would (and he wouldn’t listen to me).
Mom took him out into the living room and he fell on the way, AGAIN, because he kept rocking his weight around.
Now get this, he doesn’t throw his weight like that when therapists would come over. Dad will be an angel for them, but a nightmare for me and mom. He cooperates for professionals, but not family. He does everything in his power to make life as hard as possible for me and mom. I’m not kidding when I say that.
He goes to the doctor on Monday to find out what the fuck he did to himself, but it’s going to be a nightmare.
My birthday is coming up and of COURSE he does this right before it, and ruins any excitement I had.
Before you attack me for that, keep in mind that he pulls shit like this all the time. He knows everyone will be sympathetic to him while looking at mom and me like we’re evil for being exhausted, angry and burnt out.
The fact that we can’t afford to put him anywhere or get help into this house means we have no lives outside of caregiving. Every waking moment until we sleep is him and all his emotionally abusive bullshit, every day with no breaks, forever. He has ruined holidays, birthdays and plans because his only joy in life is making everyone around him as miserable as he is.
I’ve managed to eke out a few moments of joy here and there, but for the most part my life is a slog that never ends.
I laugh at the people who acted like COVID lockdowns were depriving them of life. I won’t deny that it was a traumatic experience, and this is not aimed at people who got sick anyway and now have long covid. This ain’t you, don’t worry.
But the people who acted so inconvenienced that their social lives got interrupted? Fuck off.
I’ve lived something like the COVID lockdowns for over a decade. No life outside of my house, no life outside of being a caregiver for someone who is sucking away all my compassion and love.
I can’t leave because I’m disabled too and all the legal shit is inaccessible to me.
I’m trapped, mom is trapped, and we are eventually going to die from the stress while he sits there yelling at us for not jumping to his every whim.
My only escape is writing fanfics and staring dead-eyed at my ipad screen, interrupted constantly by him demanding things.
I have accumulated so much trauma from him, and COVID, and mom having medical crises that were resolved, and my needs not being met, that I’ll be surprised to see 45. I will be shocked if I wake up alive on my 45th birthday.
I turn 43 this July 29, 2023, so yeah.
If I don’t die, my mom is going to, and if she goes we’re all dead.
I just hope I go first. Either heart attack or stroke will probably do it, but I don’t want to outlive her and be alone with him.
No child should be trapped as a caregiver for a disabled abusive parent, but it happens and nobody talks about it.

How Accessible Is Victoria square on East Hastings
A review on accessibility
Every Thursday at 8pm you can attend a punk show at Victoria square on East Hastings in Vancouver I love these show you are Guaranteed great music and a amazing community The music is a mix of alternative punk And Grunge But this isn't a review about music. This is the review about accessibility.
Seating
Tumblr media
Most people hang out on the grassy field in front of the stage it is on a hill. For most people, this is going to be fine if you have a cane crutches, etc. I don't see this being too much of an issue. I have used to my Walker and my cane here. And haven't had too Many issues myself one time. My Walker did try to roll down the Hill. But some people went down and grabbed it. When it comes to wheelchairs, this is difficult though personally. Sometimes I have my friend or partner. Push me on the grass. And I get to talk and hang out with my friends. If the grass is an issue there is more areas to sit, and enjoy show.
Tumblr media
You can also find a bench to sit at but the ones that face the stage are usually Already took by much older people so you Would need to Come an hour early To grab those seats.
The stage
Tumblr media
You will find a large stage at the end of the field The show technically starts at seven, but usually doesn't. Actually, start to around 8 regularly do open night And surprisingly, I have not found a band / singer I dislike Besides that, they regurdy have local banner Throughout the month, with 3 to 4 bands playing per night. Shows are Thursday and sometimes Friday night. You can always check their Instagram. Ahead of time to know the set for that night there There's a decent amount of room to dance I was personally able to get my wheelchair and have come so fun and the pit. I do find people are a little nervous. To dance with me, I was in my Wheelchair But Majority don't seem to care. And what treat you just like everyone else If you don't want to get too involved, I would suggest staying in the sidelines as the pit can get. A little violence Personally, I don't know the care. And I like to get as close to the stage as I can. What I mostly Don't have a hard time with.
How many stairs?
In total, they are 3 sets of stairs, not including the bathroom which we will get into These stairs are mainly avoidable. He just have to go around. Watch can be a little difficult in some areas due to the Hill.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bathroom access
The worst part about this Venue is the bathroom. There are 2 bathrooms, one men's ones, women's. Both bathrooms are underground. With no elevator the only way down is a very steep set of stairs. Due to this, there is obviously No disable bathroom stall I said it's an outdoor show. You can most likely find another bathroom somewhere else. But as a night goes on, that becomes a harder
Tumblr media
Food and drink
Tumblr media
There are 2 places in the actual park. To get food at drink, there is one lady who sells banic / fried bread and fresh jam They're also are trying to start selling sacks and drinks by the stage. This is Non-alcoholic drinks usually pop and Gatorade. Usually, pretty cheap drinks don't cost more than a couple of dollars.
Personal opinion and files score.
Person I love this place and i go every Thursday the Communities it Friendly Kind and very queer If they're in vancouver looking If they're in Vancouver looking For Free Event meet local punks I would a 100% suggested it as an ambulatory wheelchair used her. I do have my issues getting around the hill and The bathroom I could not see someone who could not get out from their wheelchair Get around comfortably Without assistance Overall, I give Victoria square 5.5/10 If you're interested in more reviews please Give me a follow as it's my goal to. Review venues/seams. That way, people with disabilities can find out what is accessible to them.

mild cw for ableism,
i just recently bought my first wheelchair. i was so excited about it since i have a series of genetic conditions that just make moving around risky and painful, though im capable of walking a bit, i've been excited for this because i knew it's gonna make my life so much easier.
i'm broke as fuck, though, and don't have the means to get a custom fitted chair, so i bought a pretty good standard chair. I went out to the shops in it today and well. i feel a bit defeated. it was a struggle, my town is small, the pavements are narrow and tilted and up or down hills, a small trek to the store left me exhausted since this is my first time being Active in a chair. everyone in my family is going "see?? i told you so" at me over this, and now i just feel worse about using my chair, despite it being useful and making me so happy initially. i feel like ive made a mistake, and now everyone's punishing me, and maybe if id just held off, saved up and bought a better chair and just toughed it out and kept walkign with crutches things would be fine. it just makes me feel like a worse disabled person compared to most of the wheelchair user community who all have their custom built active chairs, you never see people in standard chairs, it makes me feel like i'm doing something wrong or like i'm disabled wrong.
i guess i just wanted to get this off my chest. sorry for yapping.
It’s fine to yap anon! I’m sorry you feel that way, I can assure you, you do not need a custom built active chair, there’s tons of wheelchair users who don’t have one and that is 100% okay. You are not doing anything wrong and there’s absolutely no way that you are being “disabled wrong”. I know many places are unfortunately not built for wheelchair users or disabled people in general. It’s unfortunate and sad but it’s due to disabilities not being as recognized and stuff until more recently. It sucks but there’s not too much we can do about it unfortunately. You might be able to petition your town to make the sidewalks a bit wider so they can be more wheelchair accessible but that’s all I can think of. Ignore your family, if you need something, you need something, you can always try saving money for a custom built active chair in the future, a non custom built wheelchair should be fine for now. Your family can leave you alone about it, you are doing the best you can for yourself right now and sometimes you just have to get something that may be considered ‘less helpful’ than other things in others eyes. Non custom built wheelchairs are just as helpful as custom built ones, they serve a purpose and do it decently. I wouldn’t worry about what your family says.

(Howdy, Best To Answer This Tomorrow If You Feel Tired :))
(Just An RP Prompt, Involving Only Max This Time [Most Likely], And FYI, Since I Should Say Some Stuff About The Larutar And Max Himself, Larutar Are Closely Related To Merfolk In Max's Universe, Having Their Own "Tails" But Evolved And Found A Way To Switch Between Having Legs And A Fish Tail, Making Them Able To Go On Land And Water Alike, And I Should've Also Said This Since It Was Important But I Didn't Know How, But Max Has A Deformity That He Was Born With That Made Him Have Slightly Deformed Bones In His Legs {Permanently} And Weak Muscles, Making Him Need To Use A Cane When On Land <Sometimes Crutches, Also I Have Been Doing Proper Research On Disabilities Because I Am Not Making A Character With A Disability Without Making Sure That I Don't Do Anything Harmful>, I'll Just Say That The Previous Reason To Why He Wasn't Seen Using His Cane At All Was Because He Found Some Potions That Could Ease The Effects Of His Disability Enough That He Didn't Need To Use His Cane Because Of It For Awhile, But Now He Had Run Out (And Probably Doesn't Wanna Use Them Anymore Due To Possible Side Effects Of The Potions Being Pretty Bad))
(SORRY IF THIS WAS REALLY LONG AND BOTHERSOME TO READ, I NEEDED TO GET IT OFF OF MY CHEST)
(Remember, You Don't Have To Answer This If You Don't Want To, No Pressure, Take As Long As You Feel Like You Need Or Want)
(Also, I Hope You Have A Great Day/Night, And Are Somewhere That Is Both Comfy And Cozy)
*It had been many months, the Kraken had been reported alive, but it's flock far smaller than before. The Ex-boss of Maximilian had reportedly went into hiding. Everything was peaceful from the Kraken's former rage. It was currently night time, the stars glimmered within the dark sky of the night. There was a slight chill within the air, but it only required a simple coat to block it out. There had been reports of Merfolk, or something similar, out in the water of the sea.*
(no,no, don't worry, I enjoy hearing more about other characters.)
*a raven man would be flying quietly in the dark sky, circling and looking for something in the waters below.*

Hello! If you’re comfortable then I’d love to request a Jesper x reader where the reader uses a wheelchair + crutches due to chronic pain in their legs. Having grown up in the Barrel, the reader never got a proper diagnosis but was resourceful enough to make their own mobility aids. They’re smart and enjoy helping the Crows wherever they can. Eventually they open up to Jesper about being worried that they can’t contribute enough due to their disability. - 👾
Reassurance- J.F x gn! disabled! reader
hi! Thank you for sending this one in, it's been a bit of a while since I wrote a good bit of hurt comfort so writing it again to get used to it again was nice!
On a more general note with things though--requests (both for the summer event and just generally) close at 11:59 my time, which is about seven hours and fifteen minutes from when this fic is being posted! I won't be accepting any requests from that point until August 1st because I have some other stuff I need to finish up and there are things for this account that I need to plan out and fix up a bit.
Fic type- this is very hurt/comfort-y
Warnings- one indirect mention of ableism/implied ableism (people are afraid of the reader because they're described as a jack of all trades but also described as a collector of secrets and the reader learns to like that people are afraid of them because they're good at secret collecting. They state that it's better that people are afraid of them on the basis of their ability to collect knowledge rather than what they say are "alternatives that they might've thought of, though the alternatives are ones they didn't much like to think about at all) and there's a mention of the fact that the reader takes pain medication sometimes (a bottle of painkillers is described to be sitting on the windowsill) and a bit of internalized ableism (the reader directly states that they feel like a burden because they feel like they aren't contributing enough but are being paid as though they are.)
Tumblr media
People in the Barrel had given you a bit of a reputable reputation since you'd climbed up in the ranks of the Dregs and had made it into the small circle of Kaz's most trusted. You'd grown up in and around the Barrel, and by the age of twenty-two, had heard people whispering about you as you walked or rolled past with your crutches or your wheelchair.
"Don't you get too close to them," they would say. "They'll steal your secrets when you're not expecting, and it'll never work out in your favor."
But you didn't just specialize in secrets. You liked helping out wherever you were able, be it sitting in your chair and glowering at cheaters until they noticed you and had the good sense to go back to playing a fair game--though it never mattered anyway. Kaz caught them too, and his consequences were much more lethal--or acting as look out on heists and participating in them wherever else you could. You did what you could and you were compensated as fairly as possible, so the Dregs was a good deal for you all in all.
You brushed the whispers off after a time, learned to like that people were afraid of you on a basis other than that of your chronic illness and your disabilities as a result of the illness. It was better for people to think you were actively on the hunt for their random misgivings--things like littering, not giving a homeless person one kruge as they walked past, not tipping a barista because they were short on money--than for them to be afraid of you for any of the alternatives that you might've thought of, and those alternatives were ones of which you didn't like to think much about at all.
But, for all that your reputation provided, all of the protection and even the modicum of safety it gave you in companionship with your partnership with the Dregs, you still had days where you felt like you were not enough. There were days where the pain was so bad that you had to skip out on jobs, days where sitting in your wheelchair was the only option and a little inconvenient given the bumpy unevenness of the Barrels walkways and roads.
Sure, you had something of a reputation but that was crumbling as your condition steadily got worse and you were beginning to feel more and more like a burden than anything else. You weren't contributing enough in any area and if you were, it didn't feel much like that at all.
Jesper was the love of your life, though. He was the never ending sun to your relentless storm cloud, the solace in your life and the peace that you had been wanting to find since you realized just how much chaos had been in your life during the Ice Court. He was everything and more and you loved him wholly.
It was because of the fact that Jesper loved you wholly in turn that he knew something was off. He'd been able to sense it for weeks but had figured you would've brought it up if it were bugging you so much, but then it began bugging him as he picked up more and more on that sense. He needed to broach the subject but it seemed you were ready to one night as you sat in the bed you shared, legs crossed and a bottle of pain meds resting on the windowsill with a book in your hand.
"You don't think I make things harder for the Dregs, do you?" You asked. "I feel like I don't contribute enough but I get paid like I contribute more than enough and a thousand times over. I feel like a burden lately and I just don't know if anyone else feels like that--does Nina? What about Inej? Wylan and Matthias?"
To Jesper it seemed to come totally out of left field. You pulled your weight just like they all did, and you got paid because you pulled your weight just like they all did. Disabled or not, you were not a burden to the Dregs and nobody had thought of you like such.
Those who did were given a shot to the leg, a sharp but painful small bone fragment to a nerve ending in their finger, a loss or six when they gambled at Kaz's table, a passable imitation of Kaz's glare and the idle running of a knife from shoulder to shoulder along the back of their coat.
It was a general rule of thumb in the Dregs that nobody messed with you. Kaz had done the same thing to several other disabled people in the Dregs, looking out for them in silence because of some form of solidarity, a slight understanding of chronic pain caused by disability. Kaz had worked with you because of the fact that you were a jack of all trades and the rule had come up when he watched you punch a man in the face for daring to say something negative about someone who walked with a limp as the two of you moved past. You'd thought it stupid, and Kaz had thought it stupid too, but admirable in the right situation rather than heat of the moment anger.
"A burden to us is the last thing you are," Jesper said. "You're more helpful than you realize, darling. Even though you're out of commission sometimes, the days that you're in commission are typically our most successful. Nina complained about you not being on the heist a while back because you can handle Kaz's endless sarcasm. We notice your absences--especially me, but that's biased because I've been in love with you since I was sixteen and didn't say anything til after the Ice Court because I couldn't figure out what to say--and we miss you when you're gone."
"I just don't feel like I'm doing enough," you said. "And it kills me because I want to do enough and I want to feel like I'm worthy of existing here, but I just don't. I don't know how much of all of this I deserve and I've been doubting it."
Jesper nodded at you understandingly. "I've dealt with it too," he said. "Not for the same reasons, of course, but doubt is something that lingers. Just--if you weren't doing enough, Kaz wouldn't hesitate to tell you. There are no expectations for you to meet and you are not a burden to the Dregs, nor are you not doing enough. You are wonderful, you are amazing, and you are the love of my life."
Jesper sat next to you on the bed, wrapped his arm around your shoulders and pressed a kiss to your forehead. "I love you," he said.
"I love you too," you responded.
The two of you stayed like that until you both fell asleep, taking a bit of comfort in the silence.
You knew not to expect the feelings you felt to go away sooner than they would've naturally, but that reassurance was nice, and as you fell asleep you decided to let yourself have it and hold it close. Jesper was the love of your life and he would always be by your side, reassuring you whenever you needed reassurance, and you would be the same for him.

// Please note that Viktor can be interacted with outside of an Arcane setting! He will still be a scientist who works on finding ways to better the lives of those who need help. I also don't know anything about League of Legends other than Viktor's game profile and the House on Emberflit Alley story! I would be interested in adding his game verse in the future (because I like it, too!) but I will be focusing on Arcane for now as that will be my main verse.
Tumblr media
Viktor is an idealistic, altruistic, genius with a passion for science and its ability to improve lives for the better. Growing up in the slums of Zaun as a poor, sick, disabled boy; Viktor understood the suffering everyday people had to endure by living in Zaun's terrible conditions. Viktor wanted to leave behind a legacy where he could improve the people of Zaun's lives and do good for all; he found a worthy outlet of this dream by pledging his support to Jayce's dream of bringing Hextech to the masses. Viktor would sometimes quarrel with Jayce when he felt he was being led astray or distracted from their shared dream of using Hextech to help people.
Viktor believes that people are in desperate need of the good that Hextech can provide and wants to make it accessible as hasty as possible. This sometimes leads to quarrels with Jayce and Heimerdinger, who've sometimes withheld Hextech from the masses or halted its development until they could establish viable regulations for the new technology. Viktor is very bold in his pursuit of scientific discoveries and often is willing to do dangerous experimentation to figure it out or go against the ethos of the scientific community to accomplish his goals. To Viktor's credit, he has faith in himself and the genius to back it up. Part of the reason he is so hasty to usher in a Hextech revolution is because of his short lifespan, and his dread that he will be unable to accomplish the meaningful good that his goals aspire to before he expires.
As a child, Viktor's disability prevented him from joining in playing with other children, which made him a loner. As a student of the Piltover Academy, he was an outsider who relied on his genius and grit to make something of himself. He often defers to Jayce to act as their spokesperson for public speaking events while he supports him from behind the scenes. Due to Viktor's inability to be a public figure, Viktor is often overshadowed by Jayce as a founding father of Hextech. Viktor seems content to devote all his time on developing Hextech and sees its progress and the popularization of the science as the most important use of his and Jayce's time; with socializing and other extracurricular activities taking a backseat. Viktor sometimes becomes so immersed in his work that he becomes a reclusive workaholic.
During his time as a non-augmented person, Viktor was a white skinned, amber eyed, and brown haired human with a slim build. Since his birth he had a deformity preventing him to walk unaided, needing a cane to move (later a walking crutch.) During his time exposed to Zaunite pollution, it would greatly worsen his health conditions and reduce his lifespan.
When he started to dabble in self-augmenting Hextech experiments, Viktor would slowly start replacing his body parts. First, magically altered by the powers of the Hexcore with the aid of Shimmer (his right leg and hand specifically), he would eventually transition into mechanical augmentations, completely replacing most of his body parts.
--- Important Notice!
I see Viktor as being interested in men and having casual flings here and there during his time as a university student / Heimerdinger's assistant but nothing that ever became full relationships as he was always too focused on his studies and work. My fave ship for him is Jayce but I am open to plotting and interacting with others! If he has chemistry with other male characters — including ocs or muses from other fandoms — then we can let them develop!

my mom was talking about a program my childhood church is implementing to help disabled kids be a part of the church more. I was kind of like "cool I'm glad they're acknowledging us but I would never encourage a disabled person to go to that church". They did the typical "well you're being a little too mean" thing. I recounted a memory I had of a girl, Kelly, who had a knee injury that never healed properly. She was on and off crutches, in and out of various procedures, just having a bad time in general. She was very popular and very spiritual so everyone prayed over her and prophesied that she would be healed. It never happened. I remember her standing up without her crutches during a faith healing call at a church event and claiming that she had been healed. She wasn't, she did it because she felt pressured by one of her friends saying that God told him that her knee had been healed and she just needed to believe. She left the event on crutches. Over time all her friends grew distant, the last memory I have of her before she left the church was walking with her and her mom while the rest of the group were far ahead, comforting a girl who had fainted due to the heat. Kelly was on the verge of tears basically asking why all her friends were ignoring her and not treating her with the same care they had when she was first injured. I was the only one who had noticed that she was struggling to keep up, largely because I had faced similar isolation from the group. I was very much an involuntary loner at the time and was barely tolerated because of my social deficits due to autism. I'm not surprised she left, I eventually did as well after the youth pastor started singling me out to make fun of me for being closed off.
After I told that story we got onto the topic of faith healing and how it's misused to place blame on disabled people for our disabilities. They agreed that sometimes the timing isn't right, and sometimes people never get healed. Then my dad decided to drop this excellent talking point (/s):
"yeah, some disabled people are supposed to go on to be inspirations to others."
I tried to explain that that's rude and demeaning, but he insisted I was wrong. Doesn't matter that I've experienced this and know it makes you feel like shit and he hasn't, I just don't know what I'm talking about I guess /s. It then turned into a conversation about how I'm too sensitive and make everything negative even though the concept of inspiration porn and not treating disabled people like feel-good producers instead of people is dehumanizing have existed since long before I developed a physical disability. The conversation ended with me basically telling him that he didn't have enough knowledge on disability justice to have an opinion on the matter and him going silent and being all grumpy because he hates not being the smartest person in the room. I just fucking hate my family sometimes.

It's past 12pm and obviously that means I feel like shit about everything in my life.
Right now it's thinking about who will actually want to stick around when I inevitably become more disabled.
Right now I just use a cane or nothing, cuz it's all I can get away with due to personal stuff.
But what about when I get crutches, which I plan to. What about when I eventually get a job and have to turn down weekend plans because I feel fucking shattered after going out and I don't know how I'll manage standing all day at a job even outside of that.
I have a girlfriend and I love her more than words but sometimes I wonder if her feelings about me will change if we ever live together and she realizes how little I can fucking do like a normal person. How much I forget and how often I take breaks and just space out.
I can't tell if I'm not that disabled yet or I just can't actually get myself enough help to realise how much I need it. And recently it's starting to feel like the latter.

Hiyaa lovely mods!
First of all, thank you for making this blog! I have read a lot of the posts you have linked in the FAQ, but still have some questions I need help with.
I am visually impaired myself, and am autistic, but I'm not physically disabled, which is why I want to make sure I do proper research (which I will do myself, but I've found that I need some pointers) for a character I'm writing.
It is an Arcane fanfic, the character in question is Viktor. He was born with a limp and chronically ill due to growing up in 'a toxic atmosphere', which was caused by fissures (in Zaun). In my fic he will be a veterinarian, but he will (still) be using a cane, and occasionally crutches or a wheelchair for low spoons/pain days. (I haven't been able to completely specify what diagnosis he has in my fic that matches canon, but I refuse to make him able-bodied.) I have tried to find the name/type of a (manual) wheelchair that has a feature to push the user up to stand (for brief periods) after fastening the legs, but so far I haven't been able to find an answer. Since he'll have to go out on calls sometimes to ranches/farms, he needs to be able to treat large animals too, even on days where his cane or crutches aren't enough.
Could you possibly point me in the right direction so I can continue doing research? Either way, I thank you for your time to read this and for all the work you all do! <3
Kind regards, Jeem
Hello, thank you for your ask! The type of wheelchair you’re looking for is called a manual standing wheelchair or a manual wheelchair with power stand up. Here are two sites that sell them if you need references [x] [x] (NOTE: I myself have not verified if these websites are safe to buy from, but they are safe to visit and have good photos!)
As for a starting place for deciding his disabilities, you can try looking up side effects of long term exposure to pollutants or radiation (just make sure what you’re reading is about the symptoms of chronic/long term exposure instead of acute).
Some common symptoms are:
- cancer
- asthma
- COPD
- cardiovascular disease
- issues with the kidney, lungs, brain, reproductive system and/or hormones
- immunodeficiency
And more!
And since I know a bit about Arcane, I’d like to mention that Viktor has hypertropia, which is when one eye points upward. It’s a small design detail so I understand a lot of fans missing it, but I just wanted to point it out because I appreciate it and hope any Arcane fans following consider adding it to their stories!
Here are two screenshots that I think show it well :] (smiley face

Leaving it up to Tumblr to choose my next comic chronology in like... 2 months when I'm free of green lantern (2 months is not very generous I fear)
Reasoning under the cut :3 (very long)
Duke- pretty short (less than 200 issues), I really like his character from what I've seen of him. I think it will also be hell (as is the nature of most batman adjacent chronologies) but it'll be worth it... Nice and short one and also swag character
Jefferson- 1. Black lightning is very fun early on and 2. I've already made the spreadsheet so I just have to read it. He's just like... A very cool character and I like him a lot so far. I just am gods scaredest soldier with long chronos (which his isn't too bad but it's ALSO batman adjacent and those are so scary)
Barbara - my best friend Babs but also if I have to reread the killing joke I AM killing Alan Moore ok. In theory I love her SOOOO much. In practice I think the fact I'm having to keep a "how bad is the disability rep" counter next to each issue says a lot. Unfortunately. Also already made this spreadsheet but I think it would be a very bad and good time.
Clint- again in theory would be fun. He seems right up my alley but alas if I have to see Tony Stark I do fly into a blind rage. And unfortunately I think he appears a lot... And also unfortunately I think I would suffer due to blonde man disorder ok (as I always do)
Silhouette+Aaron- package deal bc they're siblings. I've already started this one and then stopped because whoever is writing the early stuff SHOULD go to hell for what they're doing. For those unfamiliar, silhouette is one of the only heroes I've ever seen using forearm crutches (pretty awesome) and her power is that she can kind of travel via shadow iirc? Which would be really cool if they didn't like... Make her lose all her clothes and mobility aids when she's doing this. Which is why I quit. But she's very very cool minus that (and in my mind... I know she's written better later on) and her brother is his own can of worms (in... Definitely a way). In theory tho I rly gotta get through their stuff
Theodore - first off: I am a FIEND for marvel 70s horror comics. Second off: he is better than swamp thing. Third off: his big red eyes. But to be serious though like .. the Steve Gerber and Gerry Conway era of man thing is SO good and like .. political in an interesting way. I just need motivation to get around to it. Also he's cutesy ok!!!
Jason Blood- another consequence of the 70s horror era fan but this guy has CRAZY lore. He's a medieval knight who got possessed by a demon thanks to Merlin and then he's just lived through the centuries and become an occult guy. Reasons why I stopped this one - sometimes old horror comics are bad and horrible. And also a like 60 issue Garth Ennis written series. But I do really wanna finish his stuff bc he's like .. DC's version of Hellstrom (which. Genuinely awesome character, if you're interested in older horror comics def check his original run out <- my plug for my silly husband hellstrom who sucks so much or whatever. He's rly good tho seriously)
Jennifer - I've already made her spreadsheet and started it but the writers are soooo fucking bad most of the time. It's actually horrific. Pros for her- pretty good character when written well (her hellcat series stuff was REALLY nice for me. But I'll always hype up patsy walker aka hellcat at any chance) cons for her- the misogyny ... And my reward for finishing it is watching the she hulk show. So take that as you will
Dracula- I started his stuff bc I was PROMISED Gerry Conway (who is like.. one of my top 5 writers. He does amazing old horror comics and made a bunch of very cool characters). And then he left like 2 issues in and it went downhill. Some of the same authors who did some of the good (other marvel vampire who is redacted for my own safety ok) issues did stuff for drac. In theory this would be silly campy 70s horror comics fun. In practice oh my god I am gaining new authors to hate so bad...

thinking about one of my last rebogs from earlier thats now reminding me of the downright bizzare alternatives to normal disability aids some of my characters use
These including:
- Guy who effectively lost half of his face on the right side but also happens to be a literal freak of nature so he uses his weird, tendril, things, (i still dont know what to call them) to find things and sometimes as a shitty makeshift white cane out of sheer stubbornness (please keep in mind that is the textural equivalent of guiding yourself around with a giant water balloon full of blood essentially, it makes due but it sucks)
- A gay ameoba guy whos blind and I shit you not uses a paper cup as a form of a mobility aid because he also can't walk by himself, he only allows his friends to carry it as well
- Character who cant see anything outside of a computer because hes a sentient computer program and uses the text to speech reader built into his code as a desktop assistant to read signs and things like you do with braile (on the cool side though he can just, manifest a white cane when he needs it too)
- A clown with a seeing eye balloon dog named Barley, thats it that's the entire thing
- Another clown whos always sick and has chronic pain and uses a comedically large thermometer as a janky sort of crutch/cane thing sometimes
- ANOTHER clown who literally has a spring instead of legs and has to use fucking stilts with her hands if bouncing around isnt an option
In conclusion: I think people should get silly with disabled characters more often its actually so fun

I found a new shitty thing about being disabled.
I’m super used to a.) having minor slip and falls due to my ankles and general balance being shit and b.) being in pain that isn’t caused by an injury, just my dumb ass slacking on my PT-assigned exercises that now I have an Actual Injury™️ and I really, really don’t wanna go to the doctor for it.
Like I didn’t care for it properly right away (I know, I know, that’s a terrible idea but I had shit to do) after falling because “Oh, I just rolled my ankle. It’s fine, this happens all the time. Hurts a lot more this time, though. Eh, I’ll just rest a lil and keep wearing my orthotics and it’ll be fine.”
But it was not fine. It was very much not fine. And I kept being like, “Wow, this hurts more than my usual ankle roll shenanigans, but like, it’s not as bad as my knees get sometimes. Just gotta wait it out,” for several hours before finally realizing it wasn’t going away and was in fact getting worse.
Like, I’m kinda afraid that ignoring it might’ve fucked it up to the point that I might need crutches if I want to actually get around places, and that’s not gonna be fun because I don’t think my shoulders will like trying to support my weight. They’ll rebel by yeeting themselves out of their sockets because my ligaments are shit and I haven’t been doing my shoulder exercises. (Again, I know, bad decision, but hindsight is 20/20 and in my defense, I was having a psychotic episode from a separate disability that I’m trying my damndest to get help for. Wait times are a fucking bitch and a half; I made this appointment in fucking September.)

Wow, I guess I never thought about the fast pass due to autism dilemma. I just think my worry would be constantly overanalysing whether or not I need something and I usually tend to try to fit in. Atm I’m just using all my access arrangements for school etc, but I feel guilty.
I CAN wait in a hypothetical theme park line so I WILL wait in it, but it may have a knock on effect further down the line. But neurotypical people will feel that effect too, right? Ughh I hate thinking.
or maybe I could use the hypothetical fast pass if I was close to meltdown or overwhelmed? Yeah that makes sense. Thanks for posting about this btw, very important
Theme parks are my biggest special interest, so yeah, I see it a lot. People straight up faking disabilities because they think access passes will allow them to skip lines, people with actual disabilities using them when they’re unneeded, it goes on. My home park had to redo their entire access system because of people misusing it. They were probably going to soon enough, because the expanding knowledge on disabilities and all, but their main reason was people cheating the system or stretching the boundaries of the system.
My thing with accommodations is always, if it’ll help you and make your time easier, go for it. If the pass is being used properly there’s no harm done. Even if it’s “just” for anxiety or “just” for sensory issues, it’s always fine to be used if it genuinely helps. The people that bother me are those that take the time to fight for one, brag about it on social media, and then use it to their advantage when it was never going to make a difference for them whether they had it or not. The amount of times I’ve seen fellow autistic people get a DAS at Disney or a Cedar Fair green sheet and flash it all over social media like a prize, all while making sure everyone knows they “don’t need it”. It’s very aspie supremacy the way they try to separate themselves from those of us that do need them. Thats the part that bothers me. Generally, though, the rule of thumb is that if I helps you and it makes your day less stressful,, you need it.
Even I, someone that is sometimes at the park twice a week, haven’t gotten a green sheet yet. As a kid I enjoyed lines, got to infodump about whatever ride we were waiting for to strangers, but as my health has gotten worse and I’ve been through multiple burnouts, I definitely need one now. But I don’t feel I’m “disabled” enough, despite the fact that I’m on crutches nearly 100% of the time I’m there. I think overthinking stuff like this is pretty normal, but it just means you actually care about the experience of others I think lol.
The funniest part of the whole things tbh is that disability access passes at theme parks typically don’t even allow you to skip lines anymore. They definitely were like that in the 70s, as my grandparents used one back then and they talk about it being like a fast pass, but definitely not anymore. They work on a return time system, meaning you wait the same amount of time as the people in line, just not in the line. So these assholes really are just setting themselves up, because they’re still just gonna be waiting in lines.
