He was out with the boys of class 1-A

They was just chilling having a nice time yk

While you were with the girls of class 1-A at home

Basically y’all had a girls and boys day

The boys had gone to a movie and then a restaurant to go eat.

They had already ordered so they was just waiting

Things get hot from here luv👀

They were all on they phones and signing autographs

Cuz ppl recognized them

Then all of a sudden Kaminari literally SCREAMED out

“MIDORIYA! YO YOU HAVE GOT TO SEE THIS!” Kaminari yelled sticking the phone in Midoriya’s face

“Alright! Just calm down Kaminari you’re drawing attention!” Midoriya answered.

“Damn loud mouth” Bakugou chimed in too. “Nerd lemme see what that dumbass was so hyped for anyways.” He said again.

“Alright Kacchan but I haven’t seen it either-“

“Just shut up and watchhhh!” Kaminari urged.

They all just rolled their eyes and soon enough all the boys, including Kaminari, crowed around the phone.

And when I tell you their jaws dropped to the FLOOR

It was on tiktok was of you ofc and you were with the other girls doing the dance

Mind y’all, y’all were wearing the little pajamas the he absolutely loves on you, which were these.

So when y’all was lifting up your legs and y’all thang was thanging, nobody could move

They were stuck, especially Midoriya

His eyes was just following you. Your braids were swings and your skin was glowing.

And luv best not forget that your nails were done.

You and Mina did the dance together and when I tell you it was just ass and thighs EVERYWHERE.

And then the others girls hyping y’all up in tha back.

They was clapping ‘nd making people know wassup

And not to mention the comments, they were thirsty asl.

You had guys and girls in your comments talking bout some “ma I’m tryna treat you right” and “damn girl you gotta man👀”

Dudes literally said power off like not one even fidgeted

Next thing yk you at home with the girls getting all these texts from the Midoriya

He saying “Angel.. My love.. I saw you dancing on Tiktok with the girls.. I’m not sure what you think you doing yk all that’s for me”

GIRL YOU WERE SHOOKKKK

Like is this the same man who be stuttering over his words 24/7??

Chile..in the next couple minutes, the girls were outta the house while Midoriya hauled ass to the room with you over his shoulder.

Just in his office, doing some paperwork at his agency then later he was supposed to go on patrol

He was just minding his business, just doing his job

That was until the bakusquad started FaceTiming him none stop

Like ignored the call ATLEAST 5 times but they would not give up

He eventually just got fed up with the constant calls and answered the phone

“What the hell do you want?! Do you realize I’m working?!” Bakugou yelled at them, rolling his eyes.

“Dude you are NOT gonna be working when we show you this video..!” SERO said having a nervous grin

“Hah? What video?! You called me for a stupid ass video?!” Bakugou called out.

“Trust me Bakugou.. you’re gonna find it far from stupid” Mina chimes in, scratching her head

“Y-“ Bakugou started.

“No shush, I’m gonna send it to the chat now” Kaminari said

“.. Did dunce face just shush me?!” Bakugou said.

“We’ll talk about that later..! Now watchhhh” Kirishima said.

“Whatever” Bakugou said as he rolled eyes and went to the chat.

He clicked on the video and when I tell you he literally CHOKED

His brain? Factory Resarted

Who do you think you are shaking your ass like that all up in the camera

And it made it no better that you were doing this in one his custom made hoodie after the shirt he had in high school.

The bakusquad was laughing at Bakugou cuz manz looked like he was DROOLING

“Ight ima talk to y’all later I got an important phone call to make..” Bakugou said and hung up and called your ass IMMEDIATELY

You was just chilling when you got the call and when I tell you this man told you ALL the things he was finna do to you when he got home

Girl the hairs in your head was shaking

Your braids? They were shivering and that don’t happen much

Let’s just say he had your black behind walking like your legs were broken the next day

He was in the middle of answering the interviewer’s questions when his phone just started buzzing nonstop

He wanted to look but once again.. ✨live television✨

He had to ignore them until the commercial break but he was glad that nobody could hear it buzzing

After the break came on he hurried to look at his phone quickly

Now to side track I just KNOW this man follow you on tiktok I just know it.

And your notification was on his phone but he ain’t see it and went straight to where Kaminari and Mina were spamming his messages

One of Kaminari’s said

“IDK IF YOU GOT THE NOTIFICATION BUT YOU NEED TO GO ON Y/N’S TIKTOK RN”

Kirishima was L O S T

He read the rest of Kaminari’s messages the went to Mina’s where she was basically saying the same thing

Mina was saying “KIRIII YOUR GIRL GETTING IT ON TIKTOK AND SHE LOOKING FINE TOOO”

Now he was like “hmmm I gotta see this now”

So he closed out of his messages and went on tikitok and when he opened it immediately yours was the first to pop up and it had thousands of likes

He froze at the sight of you.

There you were, in the female version of his hero costume.

Shaking your thicc behind self all up in the screen

Even when you was barely moving everything was jiggling

Manz had to cover his phone and hurry to put it in his pocket when the commercial break was over

He was literally SWEATING while his mini ‘shima was abt to make an appearance in this interview if these ppl ain’t hurry up

He could not focus at all

He was fidgeting all over the place and all he could think of was you in a recreation of his hero costume

He looked EVERYWHERE but at the interviewer so he wouldn’t crack

Best believe when that interview was over than man moved like the he was running for his life

Manz was GONE in the blink of an eye

Them interviewers while so confused when Kirishima was screaming thank you at them while he bolted out the door.

Meanwhile you just finished making some other tiktoks to post later

Mind you, you had already changed out of your costume

When all of a sudden, in a matter of minutes, the door just busted open with Kirishima huffin’ and puffin’ at the door.

Manz was look mad ASF

Girl u almost pitched right tf over

You went to swinging cuz the door was right behind you and you almost hit him until he grabbed your hand mid swing

When you looked up and realized it was him chile ya whole body relaxed

“DAMMIT! Eiji you scared the crap outta me! Don’t do that!” You screamed

“Be quiet brat..” Kirishima growled.

“Eiji what are you- AYE! BOY IF YOU DONT PUT ME DOWN!” You screamed when he threw you over his shoulder.

“I saw your Tiktok babe.. you looked so hot dressed up like me.. but you were shaking what’s mines.. you know better..” He said lowly.

You was trying your best to break free but my man had the grip of steel on you

You knew you wasn’t going nowhere soon

And chileeee...

The next few days after that, walking was a difficult task.

I hope the rumours of Louis being a brothel owner aren't true, but if they are I can sort of see why they're going for this route? I mean, with a black Louis they can't have him being a slaver anymore, so maybe they're trying to find something that is also morally reprehensible for him to be.

TL;DR: My kneejerk reaction was to be saddened, and I don’t like that this is starting up, and will continue to fuel, fandom drama. Ultimately, if we want peace, we’ll embrace the fact that the existence of this adaptation doesn’t take away from the existence of the books, and it also doesn't mean we have to acknowledge it.

It makes me wonder whether AMC wants us to make a storm about this. We’ll see...

After all, what makes this adaptation any more important than the graphic novels of the ’90s, the graphic novel Claudia’s Story, movie!IWTV, or movie!QOTD? In fact, many fans here on tumblr consider VC to be a trilogy only!!! and don’t accept the majority of the PUBLISHED CANON so what makes anyone think we have any obligation to swallow this AMC adaptation as some kind of gospel?

I see movie!QOTD as a buffet of ideas carried in an official fanfiction work, and I don’t accept as my headcanon the various things it changed about the books that I didn’t particularly like, such as merging Magnus and Marius (which, IMO, effectively made both characters more morally reprehensible). I accepted the things I did enjoy, like casting a Black/POC actress to play Akasha. I see this AMC adaptation as a buffet of ideas, some can be taken, and some not, it’s just another official fanfiction work.

Deadline.com informs us that in the AMC adaptation for Interview with the Vampire, Jacob Anderson has been cast as Louis. I'm not familiar with him, but it looks like he’s a successful actor, from Game of Thrones and other things, he’s also joining Series 13 of Doctor Who. I’ll have to check him out from an acting standpoint!

Aside from his talent as an actor, this is by far the most controversial thing that's happened in VC fandom recently. I've been thinking about this for a few months now, talking about it privately online and offline, still gathering my thoughts. So this post is not engraved in stone, it’s initial thoughts on this.

I’m glad to see ppl talking about it and I’m sure we’ll have more public discussions. I’m trying to discuss it very carefully, but also, this is an entertainment blog, my opinions are mine alone, and I’m not looking for dogpiling on anyone, I have no obligation to respond publicly or privately to anything. Plenty of other ppl have differing opinions on this. So take all of the following with more than a grain of salt, I’m not being salty, I’m providing the links to the little info we’ve seen pulicly, I’m giving my initial thoughts, and I’m also trying to add a little levity because ultimately, again, this is an entertainment blog, and I try to add a little humor to help with such serious topics, humor can help ppl talk about controversial things.

The casting of a POC/Black actor (I’m sorry I don't know the preferred terminology, let me know if you know what Anderson prefers) confirms at least one part of theilluminerdi articles that stated that Louis’ race will be different from the books. I didn’t post about these before bc I wasn’t sure how reliable theilluminerdi’s sources are (and I'm still not sure), but this was one major aspect that theilluminerdi announced before Deadline did, so now seems to be the right time to share those articles. For now, you can go check them out yourselves rather than have my reposting of the information, trigger warning: mentions of sex workers and race in the changes to the canon story of Interview with the Vampire.

I’m using that meme with a little levity here, clearly an AMC adaptation of vampires in which the producers/writers have chosen to change the race of a main character (arguably the original protagonist of the series) isn’t in the same VICINITY as the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park that broke out of containment and killed visitors to the park, but John Hammond’s intention for the creation of that park was very good, as I assume this race change was intended. Time will tell.

Race is a more complicated subject than ever, so for AMC to make this bold change, I hope they have POC and Black writers on staff and are handling this very carefully. Even then, no racial group, including POC and Black people, are a hivemind, disagreements are bound to happen in the writing room, whether in good faith or bad. People have different intentions and motives, compromises will probably be made with the story in many ways, we all know how it goes with collaborations; the end product is a shared vision among multiple creators. This could be a potentially controversial adaptation, I don’t know whether they’re aiming for that or not, but with the elements it has so far, it seems to be headed that way.

Here's a comment by "Angellus" on the 5/21 article. It's undeniable that there's going to be the accusation of racism thrown at anyone who has any negative view of this change, regardless of their reasons. I find it unfair and narrow-minded that any negative response is automatically assumed to be coming from a racist point of view. To say that changing Louis' race is unequivocally an improvement fails to take into account how that change has a Domino effect on all of the other parts of the story. Not the least of which is that, if he is still a slaver/slave holder/plantation owner/(insert your preferred term) that adds a whole new racist element to his owning Black/POC people, even though, apparently there were Black/POC plantation owners.

Not the least of which: How will this change impact his relationship with Lestat? Particularly when Lestat has the added issue of being described in those articles as having “mind control abilities” and “insistent that he gets what he wants and when facing rejection,” a terrible combination in terms of consent, even in a relationship of the same race, let alone invoking Caucasian/white dominance over Black/POC people, AND Lestat being the catalyst to Louis’ questioning his sexuality:

Lestat is insistent that he gets what he wants and when facing rejection, petulance can quickly turn to ruthless rage which causes frenzied acts of horrifically brutal violence. Lestat also has mind control abilities. Lestat initially infuriates Louis, but this soon turns to fascination which leads Louis to question his religion and sexuality.

^Screencap reads: "I love how racist everyone is in the damn comments, this doesn’t pervert the story you’re all racist and it’s disgusting. I’m looking forward to it, I hope you keep crying your salty racist tears asswipes."

It makes me question whether Angellus truly believes what they wrote, if this is an ideology, or a troll. I would suggest their use of the term “pervert” is correct though, pervert means: “alter (something) from its original course, meaning, or state to a distortion or corruption of what was first intended.” That’s what this race change does, factually. Although, in this context, “distortion or corruption” carries a negative connotation. It would take a lot to show how this change does not meet the definition or “to pervert,” though.

I agree 1,000%, I was hoping that these were just rumors. But, aside from the race change, if this were the only change, I find Louis being a brothel owner to be equivalently morally reprehensible to being a slaver/slave holder/plantation owner/(insert your preferred term). Ideally, they’d change his career to something that doesn’t involve benefiting from the bodies/labor of others in any morally reprehensible manner.

I mean, with a black Louis they can't have him being a slaver anymore, so maybe they're trying to find something that is also morally reprehensible for him to be.

He might still be a slaver. Who knows. Being morally reprehensible as a mortal man didn’t seem to me to be crucial to the story, but they still could have chosen something better. It seems to me like they want a brothel so they can have eye candy for an audience who want to see sex workers, maybe full frontal nudity.

What also gets my attention is that Anne and Christopher Rice have not yet posted publicly about it, which leads me to believe that this change wasn’t their choice. They take every chance to brag when they’re proud of something, every chance to crowdsource about casting ideas or which VC books Anne’s fans liked best, etc., and in this case, as of Aug. 31, 2021, (and to be fair, maybe I missed it), I haven’t seen either of them post about this on the official VC FB, Anne Rice’s FB, Annerice.com, Christopher Rice’s FB, or christopherricebooks.com. If it had been their choice, I think they would have gladly trumpeted their credit by now, but maybe they’re waiting to do it in a specific venue. Time will tell.

You know what's sad?

I don't listen to podcasts. According to stats only 55% of people in the US have listened to a podcast and only 37% had listened to a podcast in one month. So it's a growing market and depending on your taste what you listen to may have a small audience.

Netflix counted on this. With Archive 81 they knew the majority of people wouldn't be aware it's based on a podcast or have knowledge of the storyline. They can present it as an original idea and seriously change the source material without much complaint.

I liked the show, though it had an extremely predictable plot. It's trending on Netflix so clearly it's captured an audience. I always Google shows after I watch them and I felt my stomach drop when I saw an article about Melody's character being straightwashed. As I read it I wanted to cry from frustration because how am I supposed to trust that any adaptation with LGBTQ+ characters will be respected. This isn't the first time that I had to experience this and I'm sick of it.

But whats really sickening to me is no change will happen. Most people won't care that the storys been changed, one because they liked the show and are attached to the characters, but two because most people don't even know the lead females sexuality has been erased which Netflix fucking counted on.

It's still early but the first three episodes alone give me so much hope. There was a lot of rage at Louis for no longer being a white, slave plantation owner and instead a black man who owns a brothel and various other businesses in New Orleans. I don't know the reasons for the change but I mean it's not that hard to figure out a dozen reasons why they wouldn't have gone the original route from the books. But what Interview With the Vampire is doing really well and so many people fail at is actually adapting the story to suit the change. So many people put POC in their stories for diversity's sake but do absolutely nothing with the character that you might as well still have a white character that just looks black. And then so many authors or creators act like they should be given a damn ribbon for just even mentioning a POC in their book thinking that's what it means to be inclusive.

But IWTV readapted everything while still keeping a lot of the source material and fleshed it out. Made it make sense. In the books, Lestat is my favorite character but in the TV show, it's Louis. It's understandable why a black man who suffered so much racism and intolerance wanted to feel powerful. Was seduced by the promise Lestat was offering him. The best storytelling knows that you need characters you will root for even if they are a monster. Episode 3 was perfect. I wanted the alderman to die too. I cheered when Louis told him he could reload the gun. Felt a smug satisfaction when I saw him pitched to the fence referencing Louis' earlier statement to Lestat at the beginning of the episode. Felt anger and heartbreak when Louis saw all the destruction wrought on by his decision and knew how useless he must feel because killing one white man can't kill the racist institutions and attitudes in place. Other facets too like the tension between Louis and Lestat who as a vampire is indifferent to all of humanity's struggle and doesn't bother himself with things he deems as trivial like race and therefore is unable to understand the plight of a black man in America. And there are just so many other little things in the show if you look. It's all being handled so well and adding depth to the material that makes this so far one of the best adaptations of a book that I've ever seen and it's only 3 episodes in!

This is just race by the way. I haven't even gotten into the added oppression of being a gay man during those times. I had been waiting for someone in the show to outright demean their relationship and that made the alderman's death just even sweeter. Trust me it hasn't escaped my attention that Lestat is still given more respect than Louis because even though he may sleep with men he's still white and to the rich, white men that still holds more value to them.

Ur take on a malec beauty and the beast au please

ugh you got me in a difficult position here because on the one hand, i do love the idea of a beauty and the beast malec au. i just think the idea of a socially isolated person who thinks themself/is perceived as monstruous and who has locked away their heart and doesn't believe they could ever be loved fits magnus like a glove. but on the other hand, i don't want to make magnus, a brown character, animalistic, for obvious reasons. and i can't really think of a way to make him monstruous that doesn't fall into animalization/beastification (both racist tropes) or ableist tropes

so i'm thinking... maybe the spell is just that people are repulsed by him/fear him automatically? like it just creates this horrible almost impossible to ignore repulsive/fear/"fight or flight activating" aura around him for absolutely no reason and makes ppl be repulsed and/or hate him. even if it doesn't change his appearance at all. it's not really a changing or shifting spell, more like a spell of hatred

which like.... i know doesn't sound like anything poc/queer people don't already go through but there is a main difference which is that it makes it impossible to find a community. like even other brown and queer people look at him and feel this... huge disgust and even fear and might even hide and so the isolation is absolutely total and it fucking hurts. and besides it is one thing (a very bad thing) to walk around and have to be on constant alert because you never know if someone is going to be violent, and have to deal with occasional comments and disgusted reactions... it's another to consistently have like, children screaming and people cowering 100% of the time without exception, you know? he's basically living the life ppl with social anxiety think they live and he has nowhere to turn to, no one who understands or who's more likely to actually want to talk to him because of his differences. there's no one to lean on. even the people who love him aren't immune to it, even if of course they are not turning their backs on him

so anyway here are my thoughts: this was totally done by camille lol beacuse the whole backstory about being mean to an elderly lady doesn't fit magnus anyway and also i just like sprinkling camille angst where i can. so after magnus finally got himself free of her and her stupid claws she hexxed him back into isolation. both as punishment (a kinda "if you don't want me, then you have no one" logic) and just to make him more vulnerable because again, abusers want you alone and isolated and away from a support network so you are more dependant on them and more likely to buy into their thwarped logic if they can immerse you in it. so she's just trying to manipulate him into getting back with her, because she wants him and most of all his power

and basically you know the drill, if he doesn't find anyone who will love him romantically until the rose withers yada yada he will die. and again she just wants to make the spell so it constantly drives home how alone he is and how he can't find anyone who will love him (except for her), and make it so he's more and more likely to come back to her as time goes by because then the spell will be broken

(sidenote: camille obviously doesn't actually love him, because anyone who does that to someone doesn't love them. but as the one who cast the spell, she can lift it whenever she wants. so all she has to do is kiss him and lift the spell and be like "see, magnus? who else would love you like this, but me? even after all these years?". and honestly if it had come to that magnus would know she was lying because there is no way this is love, none. but anyway it doesn't come to that, that's just what her plan is)

anyway it still doesn't work because magnus is done and he won't get back to her, and he particularly doesn't want to get back with her after, you know, all this trashfire. and he just sets his jaw and is like "fine" and accepts that he will live however long he still has with his friends and people he loves and away from her, basically

and like gosh sidenote but this would have been so painful for his friends. camille very deliberately made it romantic love because she knows magnus has so many fucking people who love him, but him and the immortal squad have found family dynamics, not romantic ones. so there is nothing they can do even though their love for magnus is just... so real and pure and they hate to see him like this, hate to know that right when he finally got rid of her she made sure he still couldn't go out in the world. especially since magnus has always been so damn sociable, loved to be surrounded by people and to meet them and care for them. but here he is, walking as hidden as he can and with his head down avoiding eye contact because he knows the horror is there and some children run away screaming when they see him

and i just picture this desperate little scene with raphael in particular where he's just like.... "i'll try to kiss you. we have to try" and magnus is all, "my boy, you don't even like kissing, and she was very adamant that it had to be romantic" and raphael is almost in tears like "but i do love you, goddamn it! i should be able to undo this spell" and it's so sweet that he's trying and willing to be in this really awkward position where he kisses (yikes) magnus (which is just weird especially since magnus is kind of a father figure to him) because he's just... so desperate to have him free of her, finally, once and for all, you know?

but obviously it doesn't work, not even with dot, who had a kinda fling with him in the past but doesn't really feel Romantic Love™ for him even though she does love him, it's just... not what the spell requires. and it's unfair as hell and there are lots of tears but just the fact that magnus falls asleep surrounded in a teary cuddle pile after some of the absolute worst kisses of his life because his friends/family love him enough to put themselves in such an uncomfortable position in the hopes of making him free, is enough to make him feel a little better. and the fact that they are still there for him and obviously still love him so fiercely even though looking at him now literally evokes fight or flight instincts in them is already more than anything camille could ever give him. if anything, she's proven how loved magnus is

and that helps him get through it that day and is something he tries to hold unto in the worst days, but still, it's hard and it just... sucks. it's tiring to go out in the street and always have people staring at you and to see the horror in their faces and be so isolated and never really know what might happen, if he will be attacked or harrassed or what exactly will happen. so he isolates himself more and more and soon the only people who ever see him or visit him are his friends. and fuck, do they hate seeing him like this

things settle in a weird kind of way. magnus is still living his life and working as a wizard and etc and in a way the spell even helps him have some more credibility because you know, isolated scary person is kinda what ppl expect from wizards. but he avoids having contact at all costs and mostly sends the potions they request and stuff their way, and the only ppl he sees are his friends unless he absolutely can't avoid going outside. and he's fucking miserable. and every once in a while camille will come back to be like "so, magnus, are you ready to stop with this little tantrum of yours and come back to me now? how is the rose doing, by the way?" because god forbid he catches a break

also it turns out that magnus' adoptive streak becomes even stronger because he is 1- extra lonely; and 2- empathizing more than ever with the outcasts. don't get me wrong, he always has, he's a fucking brown, bi trans man for fuck's sake. we all see ourselves in the stray dogs and lonely people one way or another. but now this is turned up to a thousand, so, you know

so he has one (1) extra kind of contact in his life which is basically with stray animals (particularly cats cuz u know, this is magnus) that he finds around in need of help. they can all leave if they want, but a lot of them stay, particularly the black cats, disabled animals, and others that have a particularly hostile environment outside. you know

(not me again with my very specific hcs about deaf pitbulls who fall in love with my faves but LOOK pitbulls are very sweet and caring animals who don't deserve the fame of monsters that they have and if the idea of one being best friend's with magnus and them having a loving and caring relationship doesn't appeal to you then idk what the fuck to tell you)

this of course doesn't help his image cuz this guy is just going there and collecting black cats and snakes and has a huge pitbull around with him at all times but it's not like it can get any worse so magnus doesn't care, and besides, he can't just leave them out to die in the cold and harrassment of middle ages white ppl who think black cats are the worst possible thing but rats carrying deadly diseases are fine (and look, i know rats are also animals that get a lot of shit and persecution, but like, seriously, clean the streets)

and every once in a while there will be a person in need too, like a homeless person in need of a place to stay or some sick person who has been abandoned or something of the sort, so magnus brings them in as well and cares for them as well as he can, but also tries to maintain minimal contact because he's been burned too many times, okay

so like, cue alec! i know in the original BATB belle ended up with the beast to save her father's life but fuck that. i lowkey consider making it "izzy ran away from home so alec comes after her and they both end up staying with magnus" but i think i like it better if it's just alec who decided to leave. like he's done with the abuse both towards him and his sister and he wants to be able to live his life even if he's gonna have to start over in some other village all alone. anywhere but here and all that

and of course alec used to be plenty rich and he has a lot of skills that help him pass by - he's a good archer and hunter, he's a good leader and organizer so he could do wonders for a failing business, he's smart and cunning - but he also has, like, 2 gold coins to his name. maybe some more from stuff he took from home and sold, but still

initially he is living at a tavern and i guess i'm making simon, raphael, and maia tavern owners again! i don't even care anymore, it suits them. rapha is the cook and the three of them run the business and simon also makes musical appearances during dinners every once in a while, and they are living the happy queer polyamorous life of their dreams. we have no choice but to stan

anyway alec is staying with them and he becomes friends with i think maia in particular since, you know, she is the one with the most contact with the customers since rapha is in the kitchen and simon is up the stage most of the time. plus they are both the same brand of bastard and they have an easy understanding between them that just works

and look! simon, raphael, and maia are 3 trans, non-christian/non-white (unnecessary addendum: the concept of whiteness didn't exist until around the 17th century, but whiteness as a concept came basically as a substitute for christianity [link to source], so i'm counting the fact that simon is jewish and raphael and maia are not culturally european as equivalent to non-whiteness in this context) people, so it's not like they would ever kick a gay man running from an abusive home out. but you know what they also are? magnus' friends. and after a while of talking to him maia thinks he is trustworthy enough for them to send magnus' way, because magnus needs as many friends as possible. plus, he wouldn't kick a person in need out, so unlike with them magnus can't really push this newcomer away so he'd have more company. plus, the possibility that he might fall in love with magnus and undo the stupid spell is there, i'm just saying! i'm not saying it WILL happen but why not give it a fucking shot?

raphael in particular is of course super protective of magnus and he swears to god that if this guy gives him half a bad look raphael will end him, which earns him some pats on the shoulder for his troubles and "rapha, we don't want magnus to be hurt either"s. maia says that she's been assessing him for quite a while now and she's pretty positive that he won't be terrible to magnus, but if she's wrong, she'll kill him personally too. and rapha trusts maia. how could he not? she's maia

so, they send alec magnus' way. "i'm sorry alec, but we are struggling to make ends meet *hides gigantic gold stash* and the tavern is packed *raphael upstairs stomps at maximum speed to make it seem like their 13 empty rooms upstairs actually have people* and we really need your room to give to this customer *simon in a wig* BUT we have a friend who we're sure will give you shelter if you ask, it's not very far away, and once we have a free room we will let you know". and alec is just like, okay, because he's been staying there for free or considerably less than the usual fee/in exchange for some stuff he hunts for quite a while now, and they are nice, so it's not like he can complain

and they don't tell him about the spell exactly because it is not their story to tell but they do let him know what to expect re: magnus' vibes and say it's a spell. and alec's like ok i guess. alec's very practical, he doesn't really care, and it's not like it's the guy's fault anyway. which is exactly why maia is sending alec there

so they send magnus a heads up ("magnus this guy is HOMELESS and we are SOOOOO packed can you please give him shelter for a little while thx xoxo"). alec arrives there a while later carrying like 3 prime rabbits he has hunted as a thank you gift because he hates being dependant on people but it's not like jobs abound in the middle ages, and he is actually a little embarrassed to go in and ask this guy he doesn't know for shelter but he IS kinda desperate. for now

anyway he is standing there with his 3 rabbits debating whether or not to knock on the door and magnus just opens it magically like "i know you're there, dear, just come in" so alec does and awkwardly presents him the rabbits and shit and is all "thanks for letting me stay, uh. i can help you with food and taking care of the house and stuff" even though, you know, magnus has magic and doesn't need it

(and magnus appreciates it deeply, because it is tiring to do it all magically on his own but most non-magical people don't even consider that)

and like... it is very awkward at first because magnus does NOT trust at all and he mostly just wants to keep away from anyone who can... look at him. but they ARE living together (oh my god they were roommates!! just kidding they each have their own room but you get it) so it's inevitable. but like magnus' insecurity makes him keep to himself for long times and makes things awkward, kinda like how the initial days with the beast and belle the beast was rude and kinda shitty except magnus is not shitty, just... private

and maybe the subject even comes up like "thanks for the meal alec. i'll go eat it in my room" "i mean, you could eat here if you want" "and ruin your appetite? no thank you" and alec is just like "*shrug* it won't ruin my appetite. unless you are my parents, the concept of failure, or some girl wanting me to marry her, i don't think there's a lot the spell can do to make me scared. besides, you literally have a kitten on top of your head right now and you refuse to remove it and are using a spell to keep her from jostling when you move" "her name is Fluffy, and she is sleeping!" "right, my bad" "wait did you say the concept of failure?" "yea"

it's not that the spell doesn't work on alec; it does, just like it works on his friends. but he is willing to go beyond that initial repulsive reaction that he knows is illogical anyway (and alec is the kind of guy who is just like "if my feelings aren't logical, i don't listen to them" which in this case is useful lmao). and the thing is that once you get to know magnus there is nothing about him that is scary, and the feeling just becomes completely ignorable, because humans are nothing if not adaptable. but most people don't want to go through the trouble to try, and magnus himself doesn't want to let himself be vulnerable enough to give them a chance because there IS a great chance that he will be met with some level of aggression, even if it's an unintentional microaggression

and eventually they grow closer and build trust. i think this happens particularly when camille steps in for one of her regularly schedule shoving-it-in-magnus'-face visits and alec is just like. "hey why don't you just use magic to keep her away?" and magnus realizes that he never even THOUGHT of that and like, jesus, how much has he been unconsciously torturing himself? so he does it, and he ends up telling alec about the story of the spell, which might be the first time he's told someone that didn't know him before the spell was cast

(alec: "so she's basically just killing you slowly?" magnus: "don't be silly, alexander. torturing me first is the most important part". and he sounds self deprecating and almost resigned and god alec feels murderous)

ohh but wait bonus: magnus says that she will only undo the spell if he gets back with her, he doesn't mention that it technically can be undone by romantic love or whatever bullshit's going on because he doesn't believe it can happen anyway, so, who cares

anyway! time goes by. fun fact: alec and magnus get along really fucking well. magnus is so so smart and knowledgeable and he shows alec many of his inventions that never got to see the light of day or that were stolen by someone else who wasn't cursed and took all the credit. he also fascinates alec with his magic, but mostly with his personality. there's something just endlessly endearing about this guy who is so fucking proud of his puns and so so nice and gentle to every creature he encounters, be it a kitten or a pitbull, who's letting alec stay with him for no reason other than that alec needs it

and alec is so goddamn appreciative of it because like he IS and we stan! and he's always trying to give back to magnus which is kind of a rarity, but most of all he's also extremely funny beneath the whole no-bullshit attitude, he's caring and fierce and resourceful and strong (so's magnus) and they click so well. they can also talk about their similar experiences with like, abuse and trauma without making it super heavy and they're just,,, so supportive of each other. so like yeah surprise surprise they fall in love

but they don't really say anything because (on magnus' part) that's just fucking ridiculous, he's a monster; and (on alec's part) he will put magnus is a way too uncomfortable position if magnus doesn't like him that way and they will just... be living together. and magnus will feel like he has to compensate to alec somehow and alec doesn't want that. it's just complicated when one of them is dependant on the other, and besides, alec has had very little to offer magnus so far

(no, he has no idea how much his company means to magnus and has brighted his depressed ass life. he is stupid)

sometimes magnus' friends visit and they're always just so happy for him, to see how he's hanging out more and let someone into his life after so long. it earns him a lot of forehead kisses and "i'm so happy to see you like this". and over time he starts to invite them over more as well as just open up back to the people in his life :')

angsty but also kind of fluffy sidenote: i picture that every time they kiss his forehead or cheek or whatever they linger for a little while and then open their eyes slowly and sigh like "i had been hoping that it would work this time. magnus, you know i love you, right?" and magnus is all like "i know just from you saying that, darling. it's just not how the spell works" and aaa

and like to be extra clear im not saying that alec fixes him or romantic love heals him or whatever, just that having let someone in, someone who didn't know him before the spell, and have them completely accept him and realize how much he had been missing out re: touch and human contact helps him realize how much he misses his friends and how pushing them away is stupid when they've never been anything if not supportive of him. they don't care that he's cursed. and obviously magnus was already on the way to that if he even managed to let alec in anyway

anyway! dramatic healing scene. LOOK. usually i'd be all for "they don't change back actually because people don't have to look beautiful to be lovable". like the original BATB disappointed me sooo badly because i had just been hoping that he'd stay the same way and still be loved. but in this case it's not that magnus doesn't look beautiful! it's that the spell has made him be hated by people for no reason other than existing. and breaking the spell is not changing magnus himself, it's changing that hatred. so, yeah. i'm not saying it's a deep metaphor or anything, just, you know daudhasdja it's different from the usual monster thing

and i'm torn here because on the one hand i LOVE the drama of the original BATB where everyone decides to gather to kill the beast and belle saves him and shit, but idk if it fits with the vibe ive been building here. no actually @ me shut the fuck up. you know how i mentioned that they kick camille out with magic finally? i actually had no intentions of following through with this in any way but like of COURSE she would be absolutely pissed out of her mind and want to get back in some way, we already know she's vindictive. so i'm gonna use that. this is what neil gailman meant when he said that writing is just making a rough draft and then writing it again but like it's on purpose this time

anyway! so after they yeet her camille is obviously furious and fuming and it might have finally dawned on her that magnus will NOT fucking cave and she is losing power over him, not gaining it. so she decides to play a last card and get him to almost die so he kind of HAS to take her bid, you know? so she makes up some shit about how magnus has kidnapped the lightwood heir and she's only now hearing about it, and no one else is safe and yada yada. and she has "proof" because alec IS indeed there and again the spell just helps everyone easily agree with her that magnus is That Kind Of Guy or whatever, and middle ages ppl weren't exactly waiting for a good enough reason to grab their pitchforks. and they don't even KNOW about the spell, really. all they know is that he's very powerful, secluded, and they all fear and almost hate him just from one look

so camille makes up some bullshit story about how he made a deal with the devil to become extra powerful, and that the source of his powers is the rose, so they have to get rid of the rose to kill him. (sidenote: i never understood why the hell the rose was never used as a weakness against the beast. like was he keeping it super guarded and safe just for the fucking shits?) so they devise an attack so someone can sneak up and get the rose, and camille makes up some bullshit story about how they have to destroy the rose a specific way so it takes longer and she has time to manipulate magnus before he dies. man, it's easy to be a villain when your target is secluded

anyway! big attack at magnus' house. magnus' friends don't hear about it until it's too late because camille knows exactly who they are and warned them that they were on "the witch's" side. alec is maybe away hunting when it happens? camille obviously has magic in this AU so she can check for that information. maybe she even says that she will be the one responsible for finding the lightwood heir so there is minimal risk of him revealing that she lied lmao

oh no, violence! they battle and yada yada. catarina is probably the first one to realize what is happening because i figure she, madzie, and dot are the ones who live closest to magnus'. they send fire messages and get ragnor, simon, maia, raphael, and meliorn to help. oh yeah, and alec i genuinely forgot trust me to forget about romance in a romance-focused au. but alec is the only one of them without any magical resources and he's far away and on foot, so he's gonna be the last to get there, which camille had been counting on

but alec or no alec, they can keep the attackers at bay because they're all powerful and smart and shit and a lot of them have magic as opposed to the mundanes who don't, but of course that's mostly because they are holding off on attacking and the invasion is mostly a distraction because their PLAN is to use the rose. and camille tells them all to leave once the petal puckering starts so she can "protect them from any lashouts" (have her big villain speech). and it's not like any of magnus' friends is gonna leave to go after them when magnus is dying, bUT they also won't attack camille because she's his only hope. and they won't be able to get to stop the rose plucking in time because that's in another room and while she made it slower than something that the person can use to kill him in a second it's also not slow enough for them to get there on time (maybe there's a spell against magic use near where magnus keeps the rose? just for extra safety, so the ones with magic can't portal there or whatever)

anyway. big villain speech. magnus screams in pain every time a new petal is plucked. his friends are either running to the rose thing desperately or trying to get camille to stop this madness, she's going to kill him for fuck's sake. i don't know which chooses to do what so you can figure that out i guess. and for that extra drama, right when the last petal was going to be plucked, wee woo alec lightwood arrives! and he went straight for the rose because magnus had told him about it and he figured that there was a good chance the attackers might go for it. so he shoots the person's leg or something and gets them away from the rose and yay, day saved! mostly. because now there is only one petal left to fall before magnus dies, so at the very least, his lifespan has been shortened considerably. also, he is still in pain

i'm torn about what happens to camille then. on the one hand, i love killing camille! bonding activities for the whole family. on the other, she kinda is the only one who can save him now. they all know magnus won't want to get back with her, but hey, it's not like camille wants a relationship! she wants magnus to be her asset. a relationship was just the best way to get him to do that she had initially. but magnus doesn't want to cave and be dependant of her, so, you know. but maybe they can try to convince her to stop this fucking madness, god knows how

so okay yeah no camille-killing yet because they don't want to jeopardize magnus' safety, so she just leaves convinced that either way, she wins, and this might be the best possible scenario actually because magnus will have lots of times to think it over and be real desperate and come to her and strike a deal. so, yay her! she just needs to lie to the mundanes that the mission was successful or whatever, and it's not like that's gonna be hard because magnus won't want to be seen there again, so

we are all running to check up on magnus now. he's kinda like, on the ground coughing blood, but he'll live for as long as the last rose doesn't fall. still, they all settle on trying to help him, getting him in bed, tending to his wounds, etc. and thinking about what the fuck they are all going to do now. so you have raphael and maia making magnus soup, simon running his mouth as he throws around ideas on how they can fix this, ragnor, cat, dot, and madzie (who is here now that the danger is over ofc) checking and rechecking magnus' vitals for the billionth time and trying to figure out how much time they have, meliorn using their fae powers to stop his pain. and madzie is all snuggled in bed with magnus holding his hand and asking if he wants her to tell him a bedtime story, and magnus just... feels cared for and loved

alec meanwhile i think would tell what ACTUALLY happened to the person who was doing the rose thing - i actually have thought about it and think it might make sense for it to be luke. just because i love him and it kinda fits the whole "initially sided with shadowhunters, lately became a downworlder" thing. and like luke genuinely believed he was saving a person/people so alec brings him in too and magnus is all "catarina, dear, can you help heal his leg? i would, but i don't think i have enough magic right now" because he is the sweetest man immediately wanting to help the guy who almost killed him. and luke is in awe

(and alec brings him on purpose, too, because he knows that anyone who actually talks to magnus for a little while will see what an amazing person he is. and he hopes that luke, as a mundane, can tell the others that and turn them against camille)

and after that, of course, alec sits down by magnus' side and Does Not Leave. he's just there holding his hand and talking to him and magnus' friends, who are all also kind of. sitting there, trying to snuggle up in a gigantic pile of like 10 ppl to cuddle close to magnus and make sure he feels loved and cared for and that they know he is real. madzie gets special privileges in that sense because she's smaller and also a kid, so she gets to be kinda snuggled up with him. so alec has to be content with holding magnus' hand lmao (which he is, he's just happy that he's alive and okay. and he has a whole plan to get camille to undo the spell, mostly involving getting the mundanes against her and telling her that she is only safe for as long as magnus lives, because once he dies, she will have a bunch of ppl who will hunt her down to the faces of the earth to make her pay for what she did to him. the only reason they didn't do that yet is because she can still save magnus' live, so is she really going to let him die knowing that she will be next?)

so alec takes his hand and tells magnus that they will fix this, he promises, and give a little kiss on magnus' hand. just a little peck, no deep intentions, but magnus gasps a little because he feels something, and his eyes water a little bit because he's so touch starved and tired and hurt and alec kissed his hand and he can feel this kind of ache inside him, somehow a good ache, but he just can't explain it. and so alec notices his watery eyes and he very tenderly wipes his tears away and tells him that they're all on his side, will always be, and kisses him on the forehead. and this kiss? this kiss is full of adoration and love and purpose, and magnus gasps and the wounds that hadn't been healed suddenly mend together, and the petals that had fallen go back to the rose before it disappears in a beautiful flash of light, and suddenly magnus' magic is back full force and he just looks at himself for a second, and everyone erupts into joy because holy shit, the spell is broken

and alec is so confused because again! he didn't kNOW about the whole true love's kiss thing or he would have asked magnus to let him kiss him as soon as he learnt about his feelings, because even if magnus didn't feel the same way, alec could undo the spell. and he's like "why the hell didn't you tell me?? we could have fixed this months ago" and magnus is like "i didn't think it would make a difference. wait, you're in love with me? have been for months?" and alec is like "first of all, yes. second of all, i have nothing else to say, i just said 'first of all' because i was so indignant"

and magnus laughs and jumps on him and kisses him on the mouth this time and they are both smiling and laughing into it and so so happy. and raphael is kind of just peppering kisses on maia's face too, like, "you were right, he undid the spell, thank you" and maia was never sure that this would happen but she will take the credit actually please and thank you

and they all live happily ever after and kill camille together the end i guess. god this post was so long i'm so sorry

I think he just didn’t phrase it correctly. Obviously, he knows he’s not the first but I think he meant he expressed it and lived it before Harry did. But his past comments and phrasing don’t mean his larger point is invalid. What he said about the cover is true, and the way people treat him in defence of Harry proves his point even further- people don’t care about queer POC and don’t recognise what they have done for the LGBT community. And the fact that harries and the media use trans issues to invalidate Billy and to absolve Harry is not in support of trans people but is in fact also transphobic. Especially given that the ppl who all of a sudden care about trans issues, are the same people who think Harry is trans for painting his nails. I’m not saying what Billy said about trans ppl is right, it’s not, but ppl are using trans people to cover up the larger issue and to victimise Harry. People aren’t defending harry because they care about his sexuality or because Billy is wrong, it’s because Harry is a conventionally attractive cis straight white male. It’s so bizarre that people are trying to portray the white guy as the oppressed and the gay black man as oppressor. It shows that all those BLM and pride flags harries bring to shows are for woke points and not because they actually give a shit.

Origins

Alistair: super sweet dude who literally is not the stereotypicalchantryguyfightme. He’s a great example of healthy masculinity and I totally wish he was bi because I have an entire essay on that— also: he’s a poc! His mum was brown. In game he’s got dark features. if you really want a blond/blue-eyes/white guy, make your warden that. or accept that brown people can be noble and moral. or just draw cailan, idk. just because BioWare whitewashes doesn’t mean you should.

Leliana: someone hug my singing girlfriend before I crush her under with my own hugs. Also: nugs. Yes! Shoes. Yes! She likes how I style my hair? YES!! I honestly think she’s super duper and it pisses me off whenever someone’s like: yeah she enjoys killing people and the Game. ok. and michel de chevin willingly participated in genocidal marches through the alienage he grew up in with his elvhen mum.

Leliana: if you leave her hardened you must hate her. why. she becomes so against herself. i like how shes feminine and lighthearted because that’s so powerful-- to remain hopeful when the world is hopeless. (its hard to know when to soften her/harden her so i get it but. google it. she deserves to be happy and sweet again.)

Cullen: uwu war criminal with shit ass “redemption arc” that was actually a half-assed (at BEST) recovery arc. Recovery isn’t linear, it isn’t pretty, and even the broken need to be told they are wrong in order to heal right. Like I’m offended by that bullshit. I’ve had to do some mental health recovery in the past and unlearning lots of toxic ideologies— which I’m still unlearning— and it bothers me that he gets an easy pass because he’s hot. It’s one thing if you like Cullen, it’s another thing if you hold him accountable.

Hi. Just a reminder that contrary to popular belief, Black people have always operated with an immense amount of grace, compassion and civility. How else do you think it is that Black Mamas allowed the helpless infants of the slave master to suckle from their breasts? Can you imagine that? Using your own body and breastmilk that was formed for your own baby who was ripped away from you, to nourish the children of the very ones who whipped and tortured you day in and day out? Raising the children of the very ones who would give you the scraps, the skin and guts of a filthy animal to eat? Can you imagine the level of forbearance and restraint it took for a Black man to see the monster who violated his wife every day and NOT rip his heart out with his bare hands? WE BEEN NON VIOLENT.

White people are the ones who have literally terrorized the entire planet in the name of their freedom. I saw a tweet that said, "Being Black is not exhausting at all. White ppl are exhausting. We're not the ones meticulously and intentionally creating entire systems of oppression. And knowing all of this, you somehow think it's still appropriate to tell us to be calm and nonviolent as if we are the ones provoking and attacking others? America is lucky that Black folks are only raging and protesting in the name of justice instead of the name of revenge. I am beyond disgusted that humans are more compelled to speak out against "rioting" and property damage than they are to speak out against BODILY DAMAGE and the unjust murders of THOUSANDS at the hands of law enforcement. Hell yeah we are pissed tf off and have every God damned right to be. This is righteous anger. Do you hear me? RIGHTEOUS. God filled anger. It's a survival mechanism that our Creator programmed into every human being. We've felt this rage for centuries. So nah, we ain't bout to be docile. Nah, we ain't shucking and jiving and smiling and "yes bossin'" the police as they murder our son's and daughter's on prime time TV. And it's completely insane that you expect us to. INSANE. Would you ask a White mother or father to relax after their child was brutally murdered? Hell no you wouldn't. Matter of fact, history shows that if a Black boy was merely ACCUSED of whistling at a white woman you'd beat the soul out of him, so severely that he is completely unrecognizable. There is no way you truly believe my heart beats as loudly as yours or I bleed as red as you while you tell me to sit still and shut up as my family members are being executed right before my eyes because that's a soul-less, inhumane and impossible ask. But I'm not here to convince you I'm human. I'm here to call out your deep seated and grotesque racism and hypocrisy.

You only speak of following the law when it comes to Black folks/POC issues. Y'all were either quiet as mice about or in support of the White people who protested at the Capitol with ASSAULT RIFLES, no masks, no social distancing, LITERALLY YELLING AT THE POLICE because our gov is trying to keep the public safe. The audacity. Why didn't you passionately write a long post also telling them to calm down and obey the law? You and I both know the answer to that question and it's hella problematic. Shout out to all the sincere White, Latinx, Arab, Asian ect. brothers and sisters speaking out and who are literally using their bodies to protect Black folks in these protests right now. THAT is a grand example of allyship.

And if you still want to uphold your completely fallacious opinion that we are wrong for stomping and crying and yelling and beating our chests and raging in the streets, on the stolen land of our Indigenous brothers and sisters who know better than any of us how white supremacy and white privilege seeks, kills and destroys, don't talk to me ever again, and I mean that - not until you approach me and my people with the same softness, mercy and benefit of the doubt that you give these murderous cops as they casually suffocate us.

My husband and I had to have a talk at our dinning room table a few mornings ago about strategies to employ if we ever witnessed police brutality. The conversation was prefaced with the clear understanding that we may die for simply confronting the police, no matter how non threatening we may be/appear, but doing it anyway. HAVE YOU HAD TO TALK ABOUT FACING YOUR OWN DEATH IN THE NAME OF JUSTICE WHILE YOUR KIDS GIGGLED AND PLAYED IN THE NEXT ROOM? Our lived experiences are not the same. Don't you ever tell me how I should feel or react to a situation you are refusing to acknowledge in it's entirety. I have 5 black ass children to keep alive and no time to waste trying to convince you that their struggles and their lives matter. No time. God's got me, always has and always will. God's got you to and He will inherit us all. Dont you ever forget that.

i know i’m privileged in the fact that i am able to attend film school and pursue a creative passion in this way, but i also hope people understand it isn’t easy, stress-free, or even completely fun, mostly for poc and lgbtq+ folks.

white film students don’t think twice before making the casts and crews of their student films all white. my film student friends of color, meanwhile, often struggle to cast their student films, sometimes left with incomplete casts all the way up until the first day of production or having to cast inexperienced actors and/or ppl who don’t act at all, because they want to use actors who look like and represent them, too, just like white film students. but we don’t get that privilege, and it makes the process of making the damn film 1000x harder.

i’ve been questioned ad nauseam in three (3) separate classes about the same-sex (f/f) relationship in my feature film script, to the point that i don’t even want to touch this story anymore and it’s put me 20 pages behind in my rewrite this semester bc just the thought of writing it, then presenting it to my mostly white cishet class, stresses me out.

i’ve had to sit through white professors rant about how “pc” culture is ruining art/film.

i’ve had to listen to one professor advise my class to “not just make a character a poc just for diversity’s sake”, but rather make a character a poc for a specific reason, something that reflects in their dialogue/behavior/character (because apparently me being filipino is evident in the way i do literally anything?).

i’ve had to debate between challenging professors’ advice and notes on my work that involve giving voices to characters who reflect societal vices that i don’t want to write (ex: my adaptations prof wants me to adapt the novel passing [1929], which is about half-black/half-white women navigating social spaces as ppl who can pass for white, as a modern story about people who are “transracial” like rachel dolezal) and thus creating possible drama in class, or just shutting up and going with it to get the assignment done.

film is cool. film is challenging. but it’s so, so hard to navigate as a minority, without disturbing the peace or being told you’re “too pc” or criticized bc you’re not willing to go to stupid lengths to be as ridiculous and offensive and edgy as possible. it’s picking your battles, figuring out when it’s justifiable to yourself and those in your community to sacrifice your personal morals/beliefs to alleviate the stress/pressure those around you are forcing onto you. it’s the anxiety you feel when pitching your story about the poc and/or lgbtq+ experience to a classroom of mostly white, cishet peers (and almost always a white cishet prof), who will offer their notes in the context of their own lived experiences which differ greatly from your own.

it’s not outright racism/homophobia/misogyny/etc. it can be, sometimes, but not always. and it’s that subtle kind - the extensive questioning, the overanalysis, the ease some will automatically have in their filmmaking process bc they don’t have to consider the under-representation of themselves/their community when they create art - that makes it really tricky to navigate.

and yes, this isn’t a universal problem, this is a “first world problem” or whatever, it’s a problem built upon privilege (getting to pursue film at all). but if you want to even begin to discuss media representation problems, it needs to be part of the conversation, because this is the kind of shit that can derail young ppl’s film careers before they can even begin - at the collegiate level - because it requires so much emotional labor that i can’t blame anyone for dropping film for their own sanity.

Thoughts on BLM at Harry’s show

I was chatting with my friend @sparklebootsandspeckledsuits this morning about my thoughts on last night’s show, and she suggested that I post it all on my blog. So if you’re interested, here it is word for word under the cut. If you take issue with it, do what you need to do, but I think at this point I’d like people to know where I stand, if for no other reason, than to know that I used the space I have in this fandom to speak up about something that I think is important.

Like tbh my issue isn’t really with harry right now. I actually have no clue if he saw the signs or the flag. They are black and white vs rainbow colored, so likely much harder to spot. So I’m not gonna criticize him based on the assumption that he actually saw them, which I just don’t feel like I can say for sure. I also want to acknowledge that Harry might not know much about blm or what it means to people. I know it’s a huge deal in America bc of the way black people have been treated, but I recognize that it’s not yet an international movement like lgbt rights is today. And I have no reason to believe that if harry did fully understand what it’s about that he’d have an issue acknowledging it at his show alongside lgbt rights. Like I keep thinking about how upset people were during otra bc harry wasn’t waving bi or trans flags. But then over time he started to acknowledge those too. Last night was the very first time blm had a real presence at one of his shows (and even still it wasn’t a big presence), so I also feel like people need to just give him a chance. I’m just kind of reserving judgement on Harry’s actions or lack thereof right now bc there’s still a lot i don’t know about the situation.

What I DO know however is that that girl handed out 500 blm signs, explained to people what it was, and asked for their help and then only 10 people did it. It literally costs nothing to hold up a sign for 30 seconds to support poc. There is zero risk involved. Like do you value black lives? Do you believe we have a right to equal treatment? Do you believe we shouldn’t be treated like 2nd class citizens by our leaders? Do you believe we have to right to not be gunned down by police officers at routine traffic stops because of the color of our skin? Do you believe we should enjoy the same safety as everyone else? That we shouldn’t expect our sons and daughters to end up in body bags when we send them off to school? Yes????? Then hold up this fucking sign for 30 fucking seconds and don’t drop it on the damn floor. Like how does every other fan project get support, but not the one that specifically involves the rights of brown people??

And the thing is, whether you think it’s reasonable or fair for people to expect harry to acknowledge blm, you at the very least should not be going around to black fans and calling them stupid for even WANTING that. Like what kind of ugly ass hypocrisy is THAT?? So lgbt people are allowed to want a safe space at Harry’s show, and bi people and trans people and women and people from Puerto Rico but not black people?? And again, I’m not even saying blm NEEDS validation from harry bc it really fucking doesn’t but how can you expect black fans to see Harry leveraging his platform to speak for every single marginalized group EXCEPT theirs and not have hope that he might be willing to acknowledge them too??? I feel like it’s a natural reaction. And all I would like to see is for other fans to try to understand and be supportive of that. Don’t make jabs about how blm is too political or how it’s “unhealthy” for fans to even try to get harry to see their signs. Like what??? It wasn’t unhealthy or too political when lgbt people did it, so what’s changed? What’s different? Like even if harry never said anything about blm, it would probably mean the world to black fans to know that the rest of the fandom sees them and has their back. But that’s not what I’m seeing and that’s what upsets me more than anything. Especially from a group of people who claim to be so loving and “woke”.

And FOR FUCKS SAKE ppl need to stop making this all about harry. Like “blah blah blah stop attacking harry” like!!! No, I don’t believe he deserves an ounce of hate over this but of all the people being attacked right now harry is really the least of my concerns.

Think of all the fans feeling alienated and alone right now please.

Like blm is simply an affirmation that black people are important too. The way that the pride flag is a symbol for the lgbt community and their rights, blm is a way for black people to say we’re proud of who we are and deserve respect like everyone else.

It doesn’t mean other lives don’t matter. It should really be read Black Lives Matter (too).

And that’s the part a lot of people miss.

Like dear white people of the world, we already know you fucking matter because you pretty much never let anyone forget it. How about we give a voice to people who are regularly ignored, overlooked, and oppressed for a change without you getting your feelings hurt? Like this is not about you.

No one is willing to speak up for us, but when we design a movement to speak up for ourselves suddenly we’re doing something wrong.

Last night further proves why in 2017 something like blm even needs to exist. It’s sad.

I was talking about how ridiculous it was TO whitewash fictional characters and get angry at people for "blackwashing" I was talking about the how the entire discourse on the subject matter is stupid. How the racism is stupid. How people internationally who think that black people are supposed to be a below them in resources and power inequality and that they should be extorted cuz of our skin is wrong and shouldn't be that way. I know I said it in a way that doesn't sound like the traditional rhetoric that's accepted on Tumblr... but God damn I can't believe a black person thought That I was an ALT right or racist. I'll remember that sh*t. I talked about how I hate corrupt entitled white women so many times. I talk about their ass with such foul language- to the point where I scare myself sometimes in rl and somebody says I'm kissing up to white womens asses. please that's some actual clownery right there... You don't know me. Don't waste your time and don't act like a fool.

Cartoons have the ability to change the opinions of people who watch them. Fiction has more power than people think. but it is just cartoons. It was me talking about how it's not that big of a deal yet it is. It doesn't denote the power of real life racism. I just recognized that it's cartoons. man. do I have to show you a picture of my black angry ass for you to believe that I'm black?

I think it's important to have representation of dark-skinned people but the mentions of culture aren't there.. What's the point. I'm not saying which show doesn't have the respectful to the ethnicity their representing politics.

it doesn't matter if they just throw in a character for points. so I almost don't care about people whitewashing. I don't care. even though I know it's colorism because we have to deal with colorism outside of cartoon shows. honey who cares. they can have the racism/colorism in their Corner over there.

Let us black people/other Poc actually work to get people who looks like us any fiction. Let us work on these shows. so we don't have to deal with that s***. the reason people are talking about tagging instead imo is because so many writers seem to have an antagonistic view towards readers about tagging in general, because they seem to care more about numbers than an audience (even when people repeatedly explain that tagging helps ppl find stories they want as much as avoiding it), and by not prefacing your question with your stance on it you kinda left the door open for the tag tangent

but I’ll talk about it. I strongly believe the reason you’re seeing so much “negativity” around angst without a happy ending is because the current trend in original fiction for a while is toward shock endings, grim darkness etc and folk are tired of that shit. especially folk who almost never get to see characters they relate to have a happy ending—LGBT ppl, POC (particularly black women), disabled ppl, abuse survivors, etc. when literally all you see in stories are the few characters who represent you struggling and toiling continuously w little or no reward, being killed off for able bodied cishet white ppl, etc it’s exhausting and angry making. especially when this trend is nearly always accompanied by creators being condescending shitheads about it, treating folk as though we’re juvenile and childish and naive for feeling a way about this. Hell I’ve seen it in this very comment thread and I don’t think I’ve blocked so many ppl and made note of their names so as to avoid their work on AO3 in these discussions before. I’m so tired of all these tv shows, movies, video games etc treating POC and LGBT ppl as expendable tokens whose only beauty is in suffering and death—likely to further a cishet white character’s story. (every white Star Wars geek that waxes rhapsodic about how beautiful Rogue One’s ending was puts another gray hair in my head)

I don’t care if ppl like to read or write downer endings. The problem is when it’s not enough for them to write downer endings, and they have to go on about why it’s superior and “realistic” and the rest of us are just babies who want saccharine Disney shit fed to us. Being condescended to by largely white male creators that “real life doesn’t always have happy endings” is hilarious when you’re marginalized, and/or an abuse survivor, etc. Seeing the same sentiment parroted over and over in fandom is infuriating. A few years ago there was an abusive stalker going through the tag for the most popular happy ending mod for Mass Effect 3, sending anon hate to every single person posting content in it. Sometimes repeatedly for days on end. this individual hit me for months calling me all kinds of entitled, leaving “You think your Shepard deserves a happy ending just because she’s a black woman” messages and similar garbage in my inbox.

So ofc ppl are angry and fed up and pushing back.

I didn’t even mention the state of the world. we see enough bad endings on the news on a daily basis. for many folk fiction is an escape. if I wanted to see cruelty and brutality w no light at the end of the tunnel from anything but an oncoming train, all I gotta do is turn on the news. I’m not trying to seek that out in the little free time I have outside of work and social obligations. Particularly working in local government as I do, dealing with agencies who are trying to mitigate the fallout from all this garbage happening on the federal level. For me, reading fic is an escape from all of that. And for me writing fic is an act of defiance—putting a thing of beauty and hope in the world however small or inconsequential. You damn right I believe every black female character deserves a happy ending. I write fanfic to give it to them, and the people who love and care for them. Every LGBT character deserves to live and be happy with the person/people they love. Disabled folk deserve happiness. And folk can stay mad about it tbh. Nobody is obligated to read my fic, the back button is free.

in general, I'm curious about people's opinions on angst without a happy ending. mainly because it's great to want happy endings, but writers are not obligated to provide them. thoughts?

As long as you tag (or otherwise indicate) that it’s a sad ending, I’m good to go. I know not everyone wants that kind of spoiler but personally I read fic because the characters don’t have happy endings in the source materials. I want stories to rectify that.

If I’m prepared for it, a sad ending can be really cathartic and incredibly well done. If I’m not prepared for it, it shatters me.

But that’s just me. What do the rest of you think about unhappy endings?

Non-white artists/developers/programmers/designers have a hard enough time getting hired but can also risk their jobs by making waves and being confrontational.

This aint some cute fantasy land where your coworkers suddenly learn a life lesson after bringing you on. They hire you because you’re a good fit and hit it off with them. Talent factors in, but they do care if you’re a team player. And if you’re not, it can get around and will absolutely affect future opportunities, if not completely sever some valuable connections and resources.

And yeah, the “Make your own” is fiesable; considering we’ve had a large surge of indie games made by small teams (Even one person) such as Hotline Miami, Undertale, Shovel Knight, Binding of Isaac. There’s literally no excuse and the argument of “Oh, I CAN’T make my own character because the MAN is keeping me down!” is such fucking baloney

He referenced the argument. Then he said “Louis C.K. destroyed this by reminding everyone slavery wasn’t that long ago.” followed by “institutional racism is a thing”.

Nevermind the fact that the most beloved new IPs come from indie developers working on their first (few) games.

Stardew Valley, Enter the Gungeon, Darkest Dungeon, Oxenfree, Aragami, Pony Island, Seasons After Fall, Diluvion, Deadbolt, Necropolis all came out in 2016 alone. Nevermind how many huge IPs were created by Indie developers the past few years (CD Projekt Red as an example).

Shovel Knight, Banner Saga, Minecraft…the list of massive indie hits over the past few years is extensive. Even Zoe Quinn has made an indie game alone.

This is the period of time in which “make your own” is more valid than at any point in history. The video game market is going to reach $110b next year. Mobile gaming is going to hit $29b, which is dominated by indie games (and reskins of indie games).

Make your own things. It’s easier to do now than ever before and you can get rich doing it, too. Sounds like a win-win-win.

Unless you’re just not really interested.
