As a Latina you would think it would be a safe space to be sad about Trump but no. Except, it wasn’t this election that taught me this but Trumps previous presidency. I was startled to realize show many Latinos in their late 30s and older wanted him to win. And I think we as a society have to really stop assuming because someone has a certain identity they’ll vote a certain way.

Latinos tend to be conservative. Many are catholic and anti-abortion or anti-LGBTQ. They are strong opponents of schools implementing LGBTQ history in schools.

I know Trump won many Latinos over because of immigration. Many I’ve talked to have told me they find these new immigrants “entitled, arrogant, and lazy.” It has been very ironic for me to see them talk about fellow Latinos in the same manner Republicans talk about us. There is a strong hate toward Venezuelans because there is a perception they are traveling to various countries and draining resources. That their situation isn’t bad enough to warrant refuge status because it’s not war torn. That anger and bias has carried over into the US as well.

Due to my culture questioning my elders and even talking about these things is very difficult. But I see that I need to do better and talk more to my family and explain many policies.

This election has been exhausting overall. Showing up the next day to work (I work for a nonprofit focused on WIC and SNAP) and just the air…it’s so heavy. I know we will rally and find our hope. We made it through a pandemic and his presidency for the first time. But for now we are in mourning.

Something Zayns post keeps hitting in me is that we always think we have all the time in the world to make amends and we let months or years pass by barely speaking . But we are guaranteed no time. And when they’re gone you find your anger pointless because that version of them doesn’t even exist anymore and now you have what if? What if we’d made amends?

Now you’re speaking to an empty space just wanting them to answer because you’re grieving and you didn’t get to express how much you loved them.

I became a One Direction fan way too late 😞 if you had told me the boys were touring and the tickets in NyC would be a thousand I would have said yes because their music got me through so much the last few years.

My heart goes out to his family and friends and of course the boys and all us people who felt joy due to his presence.
