Pontiac Firebird Sprint
The Firebird is one of the most popular, well-known Pontiac nameplates ever. From 1967 to 2002 it was the muscle car edge of the company. However, there is one Firebird the automotive public forgot about, lost in the corridors of time all these years. That is the 1967 to 1969 Pontiac Firebird Sprint. Pontiac presented the Firebird in 1967 as the answer to the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro. Since it was the height of the muscle car era, the public paid attention to the high-powered V8 models. However, Pontiac managed to sneak an interesting model into its lineup. The secret of the Firebird Sprint was the engine. It was a 250 CID straight-six with a single overhead camshaft. It produced 215 HP in the 1967-68 model years and 230 HP in 1969.

Pontiac Firebird Sprint
Compared to the 350 and 400 CID V8, this was not impressive. But the Sprint six had serious torque, low weight, and revved happily to 6,000 rpm. Compared to nose-heavy V8-powered models, the Sprint was light, which provided balanced handling and great driving dynamics. In the days of V8 monsters, a six-cylinder Firebird had an almost European feel. Unfortunately, not many people understood this model. Despite the modest price and unique characteristics, they only sold a few thousand in the three-year production run. Today, the Firebird Sprint is a rare sight in the six-cylinder muscle car category.

Car Spot: Trans Am Firebird
The car made famous by Burt Reynolds. 1978 Pontiac Trans Am is this week's spot.
Made famous by the movie Smokey and the Bandit I can’t think of a movie making a car more famous than Smokey and the Bandit and the Pontiac Firebird. Oh sure, there was the 68 Bullitt Mustang made famous by Steve McQueen but this was different because this was Burt Reynolds. In 1977 Smokey and the Bandit was a story about two bootleggers attempting to illegally transport 400 cases of Coors beer…

I know it will be expensive to put the car back to a number 1 car, but I’m going to try. It came with power brakes, power steering and power top. I recorded the vin and headed home.Īfter a couple days thinking about the purchase, I decided to send off for the PHS documents where I found out the Firebird was a true 400 HO car with the factory 4 speed Muncie transmission. I am happy to announce that I will be working on my old rusty 1968 Pontiac Firebird car restoration. Needs new convertible top, the one on it looks and works fine but it old. Engine has 104,000 miles, runs good and strong. Has original 350 engine and 2 speed transmission with edelbrock intake and four barrel carb. Interior and suspension redone three years ago. I was a little nervous with purchasing the car right away and wanted to think about it a little. This 68 Firebird has new silver over black paint with buffing. I knew there had been a little sheet metal work done to the floor and the front end had been disassembled because the bumper and fenders seemed a little loose and some bolts missing. A son finds and restores his dads dream car - a 1968 Firebird he owned when he first moved to the U.S. For 1968, the same basic 400 remained, now rated at 330hp at 4,800 RPM and 430-lbs.ft. No smoke. I don’t think a test drive is possible but did not ask. 68 Firebird Charlotte: With Danielle Trotta. A heavy-duty cooling system, battery and starter accompanied the W66. Our vehicle research folks know exactly what fits.

The engine ran but real sounded like it had a big cam. Idle was rough. What works best with your 1968 Pontiac Firebird Get FREE 2-day shipping. I was able to determine the cars engine had been swapped out with a big body 400 engine and instead of the 16 heads it had 48’s. The owner was unable to provide much help to the history and origin of the car. I was trying to determine it this was truly a 400 car even though it seemed to have all the badges. In the listing it showed a picture of the car and I saw it was a convertible with the 400 hood.Īfter driving down to look at the car, I spent a couple of hours inspecting the car and talking to the owner.

That corrected the drivers side and now I have brake, tail, side marker, and blinker lights to the rear I. Wiring update: I just kept working on and cleaning connections. I found the car advertised on Craigslist. 1969 Chevy Camaro and 1968 Pontiac Firebird. 1967 - 1968 Firebird IDIDIT Tilt Steering Column for Floor Shift, Choice of Finish Add the convenience and reliability of a new column built specifically. For the last 7 years it was parked in Booneville and rarely ever getting driven and housed up in a barn garage. The car was originally purchased in West Virginia were it spent most of it’s years. Welcome to my site detailing the restoration of my 1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 HO Conv.

Homer Simpson Buys A Muscle Car
By Dave Ashton
The temptation to buy a muscle car hits everybody at some point and this definitely seems to be the case with our beloved animated friend Homer Simpson. The man has good taste as he has opted for Snake’s Pontiac Firebird, complete with supercharger. Is it a mid life crisis, maybe but the guy has definitely got taste.
It’s possibly a 1968 model, 400 Ram Air with those two hood scoops and even a convertible for the full pose factor (with license plate GR8 68) but this is clarified when he hit Moe’s for a thorough evaluation – six barrel Holley carb, check. Edelbrock intakes, check. Meyerhoff lifters, hmmm, if they existed. However, like any vintage car, beware of previous owners as they can resurface and become just a bit jealous of their past car’s new owners. After a major fight and the car destroying a house, a bit of polish will get out most of the scratches, but probably Homer is more suited to something a little more sedate. Then again, he would look pretty cool charging around in a Hellcat, pardon the pun.
This snippet comes from episode 9, season 9 if you want to watch the full thing.

1968 Pontiac GTO Field Find
By Dave Ashton
Engine: #s matching 400 cubic inch V8 Transmission: 400 turbo Price: $3000
Here we have a 1968 Pontiac GTO that has been literally left in a field for 35 years and has miraculously not rusted into oblivion. It’s actually remarkably intact for the environment it’s been in and comes with the numbers matching engine block, quite a few parts and a nice rundown from the seller of the good and bad of this vehicle.
For a car that has sat in a field for 35 years it’s obviously going to have rust. it’s unclear from the listing or the images exactly how much, but the exterior panels look in okay shape. It’s just the surprises underneath that will probably need checking out in person.
The ad. lists the good and bad points which include – ‘ #s matching 400 cubic inch V8 with 400 turbo transmission, power steering, original 4 wheel non power drum brakes, console with his and hers(dual gate)shifter, hidden headlights, original radiator, fan shroud, most if not all original brackets, original front brakes and suspension.’ The bad points – ‘a lot of rust.’ ‘missing the original 12 bolt rear end, 1 #16 head, exhaust manifolds, intake, original carburetor air cleaner, and radio.’
However, the seller has bought quite a few parts for the car – ‘An original set of 14″ rally wheels from a 68 Firebird, estored 10 bolt rear end, all new brakes, original exhaust manifolds, heads, intake, carburetor, air cleaner, original unrestored hood.’
You’ll have to start from scratch with the engine and the exact depth of the rust damage is really unknown. there is clearly a ton of work ahead to get this into any type of reasonable shape, but a ’68 GTO is one of the classic muscle cars and in itself could be worth the effort to fully restore.

Amazing Muscle Car Investments Today
By Dave Ashton
There is no better time to invest in a classic muscle car with the big V8 market steadily increasing in value year-on-year. There are plenty of examples out that the rarest option vehicles will always fetch the most money, but you can still invest in reasonable vehicle and watch its value increase along with enjoying one of the most potent rides from the late 60s to early 70s.
The American muscle car is essentially a mid-size vehicle with a large displacement engine built from the mid-60s to the early 70s with a V8 engine. Here are some muscle cars which may seem obvious or not, which are slowly increasing in value year-on-year.
1969 Pontiac Firebird 400 Hardtop This 1969 Firebird came with a 400ci. V8 with roughly 330 HP back in the day and was a great rival for the Chevrolet Camaro. Prime examples can reach $50,000+ with project vehicles being anything from $14,000+.
1970 Dodge Charger R/T The Dodge Charger is arguably the most iconic of the muscle cars and although the prices are rising dramatically, you can still pick up an example from between $40,000 – $93,200 for an R/T model. You can check out its current pricing here.
1968 Pontiac GTO Base Hardtop The Pontiac GTO was the original muscle car, with a 68 been the second generation version. The styling was more towards the classic muscle car area and featured a 400 cid big block. values of even the base models have gone up dramatically in the last year or so with average models fetching around $20,000 up to anything like $70,000 for quality example. The 1968 Pontiac GTO Judge is possibly one of the highlights of this year.
1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E Hardtop The Mercury Cougar has a mean looking front and and more luxury than a Ford Mustang of its day. Fitted with a four barrel 427 cid V8 engine, these examples are hard to come by easily reaching hundred and $50,000 in fine condition, but a base model 68 Mercury Cougar will still give you plenty of value for your money.
