love your post about Peeta vs Gale in re: violence! but I was wondering if you could elaborate more on Peeta being one of the most violent characters? While I definitely agree that Gale is hardly violent (and when he is, it's out of necessity), Peeta's moments of violence are eluding me.
I suppose you maybe mean the hijacking, but I often see people write that off as not counting because "it wasn't really him". And tbh I have my own issues with this argument (i.e. the fact that he was brainwashed doesn't change that he did very much put Katniss in danger, yes it was more of Snow's doing than Peeta's genuine feelings and actions, but even Peeta acknowledged that he was a danger to others as well as himself)! So if you are referring to that, I agree.
but I was wondering if there were other instances though? I know that dismissing his behavior in Mockingjay and asking what else he did elsewhere in the trilogy has "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?" energy, but I am curious if there were other instances, especially when he was in control of his own actions.
hi, good question! here's some instances in which don't refer to the hijacking, as it wasn't what i was on about in the first place.
ORIGINAL POST
“That's very funny,” says Peeta. Suddenly he lashes out at the glass in Haymitch's hand. It shatters on the floor, sending the blood red liquid running towards the back of the train. “Only not to us.”
— THE HUNGER GAMES, FIRST TRAIN SCENE / BREAKFAST
“Then I made things worse, too. By giving the money,” says Peeta. Suddenly he strikes out at a lamp that sits precariously on a crate and knocks it across the room, where it shatters against the floor.
— CATCHING FIRE, POST D11 SPEECH
“Do you think I gave them a bright future? Because I think they'll be lucky if they survive the day!” Peeta sends something else flying, a statue.
— CATCHING FIRE, POST D11 SPEECH
these are all a compilation of peeta considerably being violent, with little to no reason warranting this kind of response. 1) the kids were actively badgering a drunk man, who yes, functions as their mentor. but he is one person and both katniss and peeta give him no room to breathe the first thing in the morning, undermining his inebriated state. as a result of haymitch making satire ("stay alive,") based off of their survival, which is obviously extremely dismissive, peeta then provokes him by knocking his drink out of his hand??? instead of trying to be reasonable in which he CAN be and somehow wasn't here?
this does result in haymitch punching him, and while it doesn't happen again it is an equally unprompted response. totally unneeded. but within the trilogy peeta seems to have this running gag of being empathetic to everything BUT alcoholism, calling katniss a "drunk" for drinking once out of stress, and dumping out all of haymitch's spare liquor which forces him to go turkey when he KNEW he was handling withdrawal.
regarding him throwing things in the room of the district 11 attic, that was after katniss told him about snow not believing the starcrossed lovers ploy & the fact that their families could be in danger. if peeta is ACTIVELY going to be violent in response to that over something she cannot control and HE actively pushed for the entire time, of course she wouldn't tell him. it was definitely inappropriate of him considering he had 1) offered the district money and 2) then decided to ruin their things as if?? this is his house or something??
what people don't seem to understand is that peeta has good traits. doesn't mean he's a good person. he's manipulative, explosive, and often more demanding than most would like to admit. being raised by an abusive parent, it would make sense why his emotions can be so bipolar. but again, he puts people in danger numerous times, and causes harm numerous times.

the tradwife movement is the same as it has always been - back in the kitchen, back to breeding - it just has better branding.
when i was younger, i hated pink. i was not like other girls. this is now something i'm embarrassed of - this was not me being a "girl's girl."
but it was expressing something many of us felt at the time: i literally wasn't what girlhood was supposed to be. this is a hard thing to explain, but you know when you're not performing girlhood correctly. it isn't as easy as "i liked x when girls liked y" - because there were other girls that liked x, too - but i never figured out exactly the correct way to like x, or to be interested in y.
now there is the divine feminine. this is the same rhetoric it has always been: women are biologically driven to like pink and ribbons and submitting to our husbands.
the problem is that the patriarchy found a better PR team. because yes, actually, i want every woman to have the choice to be a homemaker. i also want her taken seriously for her legitimate home-making labor. i want her to be recognized as also having a job, just unpaid. i want men to have this opportunity, too.
but it is no longer "i made this choice and I love it." instead it is a sixteen-paragraph rant about how selfish it is that my generation isn't having kids. instead it's long videos about how if you feed your children processed foods, you're going to kill them. instead it is "this is what womanhood is supposed to be. i feel bad for any other choices you're making."
the shame spiral is just prettier. it is large houses devoid of personality. it is the implication: if you don't have this, you aren't happy. the solid, everlasting assurance: women are actually supposed to be submitting. this is the default. this is the natural state of things. all other attempts inflict suffering.
but you can no longer say i'm not like other girls. you can no longer reject this image completely. you cannot find it revolting, even if you know that the underbelly is toxic and festering. sure, it is the same repackaged patriarchy. but the internet does not have shades of grey. you should support and reward other women! your disgust is actually internalized misogyny. not because you are seeing a vision of yourself the way they're trying to train you to be. not because you feel her ghost pass within an inch of your earlobe. not because your father will eventually ask you - why can't you be like her?
because they figured out how to make it beautiful: women will sell other women on this idea, and we will find the singular loophole in feminism. sure, she's shaming you in most of her videos. sure, she implies that a different life is obscene. but she just wants you to be happy! you'd be happier if you were listening!
and the whole time you're sitting there thinking: i'd actually just be happier if i had that kind of money.

To the people in the OTW Tumblr Inbox asking about how the OTW is responding to the American Election.
This is a separate post (and not a response to a specific message) because we all need to see it.
Folks have been asking Support (through the form) as well as the other social media mods, and we have now been given the following to tell you.
We are continuing to closely monitor political developments that may affect AO3 and the OTW as a whole. First, we want to assure you that there are several factors that tend to protect AO3 and its users from legal risks and challenges. These include that we are a non-profit, do not host images, do not use algorithms to promote or advertise content to users, are not aimed at children, and collect very little user data. The results of the 2024 U.S. election are deeply concerning, but the OTW remains committed to providing an inclusive space for fannish expression and will continue to fight for fans' free expression, both in court and through legislative efforts, in the U.S. and worldwide. We have seen that fans are a powerful force for promoting free expression, and we will continue to inform people about opportunities for their voices to be heard. If a bill is likely to be passed in the future that could impact our ability to provide services, our legal team will be prepared to offer updates, guidance, and legal support to our users. Fans are not alone in this fight. Both the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) (https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/the-aclu-is-fighting-back-against-trump ) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/11/2024-us-election-over-eff-ready-whats-next ) made preparations for this outcome and have developed strategies to combat anticipated efforts to curtail online freedoms. We urge our users to support these organizations and others as they fight for your rights and ours.

So FireAlpaca and my Tablet(?) are still riddled with problems and glitches, but I was able to find a work around the breaking problem... somewhat- 💀
So in celebration of still being able to limp along with FireAlpaca, I have drawn happy Pomni this time instead of sad! And essentially canonized Gummigoo x Pomni to my AU <XDD Its one of those veeeery rare ships that sliped through the cracks.
I'm thinking it'll be the classic case of "What is this feeling... oh its love? Well I better not tell her in case she doesn't feel the same" 💀

hi, i wanted to ask what you think about those japanese zoo's training exercises were someone dresses up as an animal and pretends to have escaped and all that, are they effective? what do U.S zoo's do to train for things like that?
They look silly, but they're a real emergency drill! They force people to think through how they'd problem-solve in real time and in the physical space, which is a very different experience than just thinking about it.
There's no consistent requirement for emergency drills in the US federal regulations for zoos, but there is a contingency planning one. Facilities licensed by the USDA have to identify and create plans for addressing likely emergencies they may have to deal with, which is everything from like natural disasters to animal escapes. That's all done as paperwork and provided to the government to prove they've done it.
BUT. That doesn't mean that zoos and other animal facilities don't do more planning on their own. Some of the third-party accreditations (it might be all of them but I don't have the docs in front of me to confirm) require regular drills for all types of emergency scenarios.
Now there's a slight problem there - a real escape drill, run fully on grounds with real people and stand-in animal, interferes with the daily operations of the zoo. You might not have to physically shut all the guests into buildings during a practice leopard escape, but you do need them to not get in the way, and you don't want to scare people who think a drill is real, etc. So there's an alternate option.
US zoos frequently run emergency management drills as TTRGPs!
Like, they use a printed scale map of the zoo and roll dice to randomize the situation. This is absolutely recommended as a strategy by the Zoo and Aquariums All Hazard Partnership: there's a whole webpage about it, including instructions for the Drill Master.
There are in-person drills, of course, because you have to practice dealing with these problems in meatspace. But a lot of them are done tabletop! I cannot express the extent of my mirth when I first encountered this in the wild at a conference about a decade ago, when the idea was really taking off. It was Very Serious Zoo People on a Very Serious Topic about preventing Really Bad Things from happening... and then suddenly there was a d20 on the screen.

So on my recent revisit of centaur bodyplan challenges on my Centaur Wheelchairs post there was some talk of how centaurs would be stretching to make up for the decompression horses usually get in their backs when they graze, and also I've just seen a few tags and other notes curious about centaurs stretching and folding so.. here ya go! Some new stretches focused on stretching more like how horses do with their necks, and then just a collection of all my wibbly wobbly Big Stretch! and general range of motion doodles

You're a fucking moron :))
If bigots hate trans people equally they'd kill as many trans men and Theyfabs as they do Trans Women.
But they don't. You're so fucking scared of acknowledging you have modicum of privelage over us. Because you might have to be held accountable for the vitriolic bile you spill over the internet.
This isn't your safe space to wave-away critically thinking and have a pity party.
If you think I should die, why don't you come and do it yourself since you're so mad everyone before you has failed?
