As he realized that he was not, in fact, alone, and this land belonged to someone, Ingvar's heart dropped into the pit of his stomach, but it may as well have sunken underground and gone to the earth's molten core. He wished he could simply slip away like that, but, alas, this cursed corporeal form was stuck facing the consequences of his actions.

"Please, be forgiving of me; I— I-I was not realizing this land was— w-was being own'd," he gibbered.

The very idea of anyone 'owning' any land was prosperous to the giant, but this was not the time nor place to argue such semantics he had no control over.

Leia was angry. It radiated from her as she walked through the garden just on the outskirts of the castle walls. There was talk of her getting sent away to be married to some selfish prince. Anything to gain more allies to help with the war, but also, it seemed, anything to get Leia out of her mother's hair. Much as Leia resented the woman who had birthed her, she was confident that her father would come back. Even though she was closing in on her mid-twenties now, she still believed he was alive. He had to be. She had been so caught up in her thoughts that when the giant spoke, she jumped back in surprise. Her head tilted up to look at him as he spoke with what felt like fear. She hadn't expected anyone to be out here and certainly not a giant, but he didn't seem to mean any harm.

"It's ... it's alright," Leia said softly, pulling at the bottom of her dress so that it wouldn't get too dirty. "I suppose that means you're not from here. Where do you hail from, gentle giant?" Despite his size, he reminded her quite a bit of her father. Though for now, she couldn't quite pinpoint why.

Of course, Leia obeys. Despite having the feeling that this woman was nothing like her mother, she still fears punishment. She takes a seat carefully beside her, making sure she doesn't sit awkwardly on the dress she wore. She gave a sheepish smile at the woman's comment, fingers twitching with nerves.

"I- well, I don't know anymore." Leia said softly, "My father has been off to war since I was very young, and my ... mother ... she is not very kind." Leia admitted, "No one would believe me so I ... I just ran away."

the queen wipes dirty hands on the sides of her dress, gesturing for the young girl to follow after her to the cement bench a few feet away. slowly, she takes a seat on the bench, gesturing for the young girl to sit next to her.

"my hospitality is my specialty." she replies. that was an understatement. before the plague, the family hosted a variety of events, always inviting the kingdom to the events. now, they were broken. half the kingdom was deceased, the other half recovering.

"why do you say that?" she whispers. "you don't have anyone?" she closes her eyes. "you're welcome to stay as long as you need."

In my original universes I've made up, incestuous relationships (mostly cousins and siblings) become acceptable enough at some point or another (some before the stories even begin, one during); but in my sci-fi/fantasy verse, it's always been perfectly acceptable... except for in at least one country bc I have a couple who are low-key a Luke & Leia knockoff, so I need him to be put off by it/her to have a reason to keep it from him once she finds out (bc she knows he'd be put off) for the DRAMA.

OC creators that helped me through 2023

You, @shrinkthisviolet, @lady-of-the-spirit, @dream-beyond-the-fantasy and @daughter-of-melpomene have all helped throughout this year - most of you I only found out about through the OC Creator Bingo, which was a fabulous creation that not only connected me to other OC creators but gave me the confidence to create OC masterlists and to be more comfortable in talking about my OCs, to create moodboards and web weaves which really do work in helping the ideas flow, and I love seeing everyone's OCs and how much work goes into them, and it cheers me up whenever I'm tagged in an event or an OC post.

OC fics of others that helped make 2023 a little better

i still love you (i promise) by @shrinkthisviolet - broke my heart many times but there's many good moments too and the revelation is worth it.

just close your eyes, soon we'll be home by @lady-of-the-spirit - I love Ioana/Joan and her interactions with The Old Guard so much! They're family!

Never Knew by InvisibleObserver13 - always love a good long-lost child fic, and this is such an interesting take on the trope and the kid OCs are all well written and the family tension is believable, even though I do hope it gets resolved

The Prayer by @arrthurpendragon - I'm a little behind on this but I've read the first seven chapters and I already love it and Nerissa and Merlin's dynamic (always love well-written siblings), and the tags are funny because we know what Nerissa and Arthur are going to become, so the slow burn is going to be good

Little Bit by sabershadowkat - a Buffyverse fic with an OC who is Angel's half-human daughter and one I recently rediscovered. I love the character of Kathleen so much and it remains one of my favourite stories in the fandom

OCs of others that made 2023 not so crummy

Morgan Wells (shrinkthisviolet) - a beautifully well-rounded young girl who deserves the absolute world (and whose not-father I am going to personally yeet into the sun).

Lucy Kenobi (shrinkthisviolet) - the Skywalker triplet who seamlessly fits into the Star Wars 'verse, and whose dynamics with Luke and Leia and Obi-Wan are always a compelling read, and I look forward to seeing her become a Jedi.

Molly Yates (dreambeyondthefantasy) - a great Whoniverse OC who fits in well with the Sarah Jane team, and I love reading about her and I'm definitely going to catch up on the fics soon.

Cheryl Johnston (daughter-of-melphomene) - the first and so far only Bill & Ted OC I've seen but I already love her so much, and I love finding out more about her when I send asks and I really look forward to seeing more of her in the future.

Ioana/Joan (lady-of-the-spirit) - I was delighted to find out I wasn't the only person with an Old Guard OC and I love this woman, though I desperately want to give her a hug because of her backstory, because of the fact that she met most of the Immortals after her first death and Booker at one point, so she doesn't dream about any of them and spends centuries thinking she's the only one. And that's just tragic.

Marianne (lady-of-the-spirit) - I've only read five chapters of the fic but I already love this mutant because of how protective she is of the younger cast and how unwilling she is to put up with Charles's bullshit. She's also a great mother and her son is amazing and I love him too.

Project some love into 2024 for another OC creator or fic

I love them all, of course, but I am definitely looking forward to seeing more of Molly Yates!! And Cheryl Johnston too - she's going to be a good fit in the Bill & Ted verse, I just know it!!

I want to give some to love, you're not alone (cause i'm gonna stand by you) and my OCs Steph Taylor and Alyssa Clayton. I haven't updated the story for a while but I'm really hoping to work on it in 2024 because I've have a really good story that I want to tell (and I'm very interested to see what other canon characters, OCs, and plot points will show up).

I've made so many this year, but I do love the Main OC and Side OC masterlists - I love updating them and they're a great way to keep track of things, though I also love the character introductions I've done even for OCs I've had for years. There's something nice about giving a small summary of the OC and their story.

Jacen's Verses

General Verses

A Long Time Ago - Jacen’s fifteen or sixteen with his whole life spread out in front of him but no idea what to do with it.  (No Vong unless specifically stated otherwise)

Death Doesn’t Discriminate - Jacen’s reaching adulthood in the midst of a war that could be the end of the galaxy as he knows it, fighting alongside his family and friends for survival and their way of life against an enemy like none he’d ever faced before. (Vong War Verse)

After the Storm - After the war things are slowly trying to return to normal, Coruscant is rebuilt and the Jedi try to find their footing.  Jacen is helping, as best he can, while still healing from his experiences during the war.

Awoken - TFA verse, Ben/Kylo Ren is Jacen’s older brother and Jacen has been active in the Resistance as a scout while hiding the training he had as a Jedi though he hadn’t yet reached the rank of Knight when Ben turned and the Academy was destroyed.  But upon feeling his father’s brush with death he’s returned to the Resistance base to be with his family while Han is in bacta and critical condition, reconnecting with his twin sister who left with their father all those years back.

Teen Rebel - Pre-Movies TFA verse; Han and Jaina have left, Anakin is presumed dead, and Jacen is growing up on a series of resistance bases with Leia.

Of Royalty - Leia stepped up as Queen of New Alderaan after the New Republic was up and running, with Han as her Consort.  Jaina is her heir and Jacen is about to step up as Senator for the New Alderaanian people.  Though all three children trained at their uncle’s academy under their father’s name to protect their identities only Anakin continued on to become a Jedi, as the twins felt their other duties necessitated them dropping out shortly before they would have been knighted.

Wanderer - Takes place during his post-Vong journey of self-discovery.  Jacen’s wandering the Outer Rim, searching for peace and trying to reconnect with the kind of Jedi he’d been before the war.

A Knight’s Tale - After returning from his years of wandering Jacen dedicates himself to the Order once again, traveling as needed to serve the people of the Alliance.  He remains a knight, turning down the offer of a promotion to Master as he doesn’t feel he’s ready for that title just yet.

Earth Born - Modern/Earth AU where Jacen is a wildlife photographer and zoology student, son of UN Ambassador Leia Organa, who attended a fancy international high school with his sister and friends as a teenager.

Muse-Specific Verses:

Tryptich - The Solo Twins are the Solo Triplets.  Jaina, Jacen, and Julian Solo are all on the Myrkr mission when Julian is lost in the destruction of the Voxyn Queen.

Lost and Found - Jacen disappeared in the Vong war and was never actually seen again, the Jacen Solo who returned and became Caedus was a clone created by Vergere so that she could hide the original at a secret home of hers in Wild Space.  Eventually he finds his way back, only to discover that his face is reviled and someone committed heinous crimes in his name

Knight Follows Queen - After the war Jacen spent a single night with the Queen Mother of Hapes, a culmination of the feelings they’d been forced to put on the back burner by circumstances, before leaving to try and figure out who he was to become in the aftermath of such a devastating conflict.  He essentially fell off the radar and completely out of contact with everyone he had known, thus never learning of the daughter he and Tenel Ka shared.  But when said daughter is kidnapped he senses Tenel Ka’s uncharacteristic rage and rushes back to discover what went wrong and how he can help.

Sideways - A freak hyperspace accident launches Jacen into a parallel world, one in which the local version of him was consumed by darkness and became the Sith Lord Darth Caedus.

Aldera - Fantasy AU!  Jacen has been sent to the courts of the Hapan Empire to gain their protection for the shattered remnants of the kingdom of Aldera.  The nobles back home hope he will marry the Empress, Tenel Ka, but he’s content to simply negotiate a protectorate status for his people.  Unless love so happens to bloom on its own.

Unless it's something specific, I have with someone like a ship, I am VERY canon based. I despise AU's where Anakin doesn't fall, because it was all supposed to happen and taking the tragedy out of it, is a complete disservice. Is it sad? Sure. But, it's even sadder to do a disservice to it. I do have a shirtless Vader verse, so I will do some canon divergence, but I am picky with AU's. There are ways to have other things that happened not happen, and him still fall. When people expect me to adapt to fix-its, it can make me lose motivation for days at a time. Going on 5 days now.

I'd like to add that Leia is only related to Kylo / Ben by actual blood/seed in her fantasy verse. In her main verse she's literally created via force manifestation from my Kylo's desire to become a father (again) and is basically just that intention turned by Leia's mother into a feasible pregnancy. It's sort of similar to Anakin's creation in a way with more intention on the mother's side vs the father's, if that makes sense.

Jackie deserves so much better than the fate T9S has given her, which is the main reason T9S irks me. If the story was pushed to 1998-9, E/D's daughter wasn't named Leia, and Jackie and Kelso weren't a thing (maybe an offscreen J/H ending, with their daughter joining Lucy [not Leia] on her adventures?), I'd be legitimately excited. Anywho, since Eric and Donna's travel bug was cut short in my TWA verse in 1985 because of Kate, I can totally see them dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Not in 1980-2, though. Because as I said in my reply to your essay on T9S's premise, I honestly see Donna having an abortion in most cases, since she and Eric are so far from being ready, it would be a disservice to their child. To go through the same turmoil she did.

The only times I see her not having one is if Eric (or Jackie, maybe) spilled the beans about her pregnancy before she could nip it in the bud (like in season 6, if she was pregnant), or if she and Eric were separated (for whatever reason). and her aching heart overruled her head (like in Drops of Jupiter). And Eric wouldn't even fathom naming his daughter Leia, because Leia was a sexual fantasy. Not someone he idolized, like Luke, per se.

To me, the unexpected pregnancy would have to realistically occur between 1983-7. After they're done with college, and are young, traveling professionals (they're working in Cape Town, South Africa in my verse), only for it to be unexpectedly cut short. Speaking of which, I have a bunch of chapters of Ebony and Ivory (the main E/D fic in my verse) written, but I only have three chapters posted. All of my stuff is on AO3 at this point (I only posted on FF in the very beginning), and I have a bunch of ficlets, moodboards, and essays within my verse in the Eric and Donna tag. And the Jackie and Hyde tag. And the Red and Kitty tag...

Yeah, I don’t blame anybody for not being interested in That 90′s Show. Different strokes for different folks, and all that. If Eric and Donna were treated the way Jackie and Hyde are being treated, I’d be effing pissed too.

I think circumstances outside the show/characters led to Jackie and Kelso being written as back together, and that’s really dumb, lol. I’m with you - Jackie could have appeared alone without mentioning any romantic partner, so it’s all left up to fans’ imaginations. Or sure, mention that she’s going home to Hyde off-screen. But the writers/producers have shown that they don’t have that kind of creativity, unfortunately. They were unwilling to do it when Topher left in season 8, too.

I have a lot of questions about That 90′s Show and skepticism too, but hey, I haven’t even seen it yet so what do I know? I’m going to reserve judgement until it comes out. Maybe it will suck. Maybe it will be great. Probably somewhere in between. I will take what I like and use it for inspiration, and I’ll ignore the rest, same as always with this show. It has disappointed me before and I’m sure it will again, but that’s why fanfic exists!

I don’t think Donna would get an abortion, but there are a lot of different ways to interpret the characters and of course we’re each entitled to our own. When she thought she was pregnant in the show, abortion wasn’t something that seemed to be on the table. The characters all sort of acted like it was inevitable that if Donna was pregnant, she’d be having the baby. Brooke and Kelso’s unexpected pregnancy was treated the same way. Roe v. Wade happened in 1973 so abortion was certainly legal and available (especially in cities probably, like Madison, Milwaukee or Chicago) but I don’t think it was by any means common. At least, not in Point Place. 

I think Donna would be well informed about her options, though, and I think she would think about them seriously if something like this happened. I also think that finishing college would be a deal-breaker for her. And she wouldn’t want to rush into marriage, just because she was being rushed into parenthood. Eric would have to react better than he did last time, too. I think he’s capable of acting more maturely, though, and I also think that fatherhood would be something Eric would take seriously and would be the catalyst for him to finally grow up. 

Hmm, I think their kid would be raised with a lot of love and support, not only from Eric and Donna but from Red and Kitty. I bet Leia had a pretty happy childhood (albeit imperfect). One of the things I’m looking forward to about That 90′s Show - other than Eric and Donna’s on-screen reunion! - is seeing Red and Kitty interact with their granddaughter. I have a feeling they helped an awful lot when Leia was small.

WIP Wednesday

Well, seeing as My Best Friend's Weddings only has two chapters left, you can bet I won't be posting any more teasers from it. Which means I get to introduce you to my current WIP! It's not even close to being done, yet, and those of you who read my stuff know that I never start posting until the story is complete. However, I feel the need to let you know what's coming up next, and maybe it will give me the boost I need to get cracking on it! Truthfully, I think once Weddings is done, I'll be able to focus on it better.

This one is set in the canon-verse, but unlike my previous series, it will diverge from canon fairly quickly. After the sequel movies were completed, I was content to write what I though could happen afterwards. I never strayed into the 'what if' territory. But now that we've traveled some distance from the movies, and because in the last two years I've become more and more consumed with the Damerey ship, I'm ready to delve into the mess of canonical fantasy.

This one takes place in between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, and it asks a simple question: What if Rey and Poe became lovers? Let's find out in Kinetic!

It all happened so fast.

One minute, they were bickering, like usual. The next moment, as soon as Poe reverted back to real space, the insanity began.

Rey was sitting in the gunner seat of the ancient ARC-170 Starfighter while Poe was piloting, and she couldn’t see ahead of them as easily as he could, but while the planet Soelea was clearly visible, so was the First Order Light Cruiser. And the four TIE Fighters that immediately began rushing toward them. They showed up on her HUD within seconds, and Rey scrambled to find the weapon controls in the unfamiliar ship.

“Uhm, Poe?”

“I know! I know!” He swung the old starfighter around in a big sweeping turn. “Are your weapons good?”

“Yes,” she said through clenched teeth. “I told you we shouldn’t jump directly to the planet. We should have reverted outside the system.”

“Intel did not have any First Order ships anywhere near here!” Poe argued.

“Well, they probably got the same information about the A-wings we did and just showed up!” Rey countered.

“Are you good to fire?” Poe growled. She could almost feel the anger and adrenaline pouring off of him.

“Yes!”

He pulled the ship around, this time in a tighter turn than before, and suddenly they were facing the TIEs again. Rey didn’t hesitate and opened fire. The TIEs followed suit, but two of them exploded before any of their bolts even came close. Poe jerked the fighter upward almost ninety degrees and Rey was thrown back in her seat as the inertial dampers worked to compensate for the sharp move. The TIEs separated, one of them following them up, the other going ‘under’ them.

Poe did a loop, pushing the old fighter so hard Rey swore she could hear it groan, and soon the one that had gone ‘under’ them was in front of them. Without waiting, Rey fired, and the TIE and its pilot became space dust.

The fighter jerked suddenly, and Rey knew the last TIE had finally found its opening. “Kriffin’ hell!” Poe hissed. Alarms sounded all throughout the ship and Rey glanced around, trying to see if there was anything she could do to fix whatever had been damaged. Though the armor on these old birds was strong, this particular bird was almost fifty standard years old. “I know I said I missed BB-8 earlier,” Poe shouted. “But now I really miss him!”

BB-8 had been on a fact-finding mission with Finn and Beau Kin when the intel about the A-wings had arrived. Leia knew Poe would have to go, and she would have preferred sending Finn and BB with him to Soelea, but she didn’t want to wait for them to come back, so she had grudgingly sent Rey. Rey had been excited by the prospect of leaving their temporary base on Umbara for an actual mission, but Poe had been more than a little grumbly about the whole affair.

“Hang on!” Poe yelled over his shoulder, then Rey felt her body fall forward against the harness as he essentially slammed on the ‘brakes.’ The TIE rushed past them, barely missing them. Rey huffed out a breath as she straightened in her seat, aimed, and fired. Poe didn’t miss a beat as the TIE disappeared, diving for the planet, away from the cruiser and the possibility of more pursuit. The alarms continued to shriek throughout the cockpit.

“What’s wrong with it?” Rey shouted, unable to tell what systems were affected from the gunner’s seat. “Will you be able to land?”

“Land?” Poe asked, his voice sounding a bit higher than normal. She noticed that happened when he was stressed or angry. “Uh… yeah, I can land it. Not sure it’s going to be very pretty, though.”

“So, we’re crashing, is what you’re saying?” Rey challenged. She heard the whine of the engine as they dropped closer to the planet.

“Well,” Poe responded, his voice more conversational now. “I’m crashing. You’re ejecting as soon as we get into atmo.”

“Wait! What?” Rey looked around the cockpit desperately. “No! You are not ejecting me!”

“Yes, I am!” he argued. “Get your oxygen on now, just in case I misjudge.”

“Poe! No!” Rey was panicked now. If he ejected her but not himself… “Only if you follow me and don’t try to land this thing!”

“We need as much of it intact as possible, Rey,” he told her, his voice still calm. “The parts may come in handy if we find those A-wings.”

��How are we going to find those A-wings if you’re dead?” Rey snapped.

“Rey! Oxygen! Now!” His voice was harsh now. “That’s an order!”

Grimacing, Rey pulled out the mask and turned on the oxygen unit on her chest. As she attached the mask to her helmet, she grumbled, “You’re not my superior, Dameron.”

She heard him laugh. “See you on the flip side, Sunshine!”
