I followed you for your pjo writing, so I was very surprised to find out that your url is from matthew stover's ROTS novelisation. two-ish years ago I watched star wars for the first time and fell in love with the prequels, it is probably still the fandom I most interact with on here.

I notice most (all?) of your star wars fics on ao3 are sequel things. I haven't seen the sequels yet because of general negative internet sentiment towards them. although this is bad logic because the internet feels negatively about a lot of great things, including ("great" is subjective I suppose) the prequels.

as someone who still mainly associates you with pjo, I guess I'm just curious about you and star wars in general. did you watch the movies when they first came out? or did you, like me, discover them later? and would you care to make a case for watching the sequels?

and as an aside - how do you feel about anon asks. do you prefer when people are non-anon?

truly genuinely i dont think i've ever met a person on this website, Popular Online or not, who has been upset about receiving genuine asks. LIKE as someone who prefers to be approached rather than to approach people i very understand the reticence to make contact, but if you ever have hesitance because your brain is like 'ooooh they aren't gonna want to talk to meeeeeee' i really truly think you can let that one go. esp because anon is an option - the worst thing that happens is that someone doesn't respond, which is also not personal and is usually related to brain death on the part of the person receiving the ask

BASICALLY i really think that most people making themselves available on the social media want to use the media to be social - if they didn't, they'd close their ask box.

MAN okok i love to talk about a personal fandom history LOL star wars is a weird one for me! i came into the fandom extremely sideways - while it turns out i had watched at least one of the prequels in theatres as a child, i had somehow wiped all memory of them from my mind, leaving only a residual obsession with padme amidala's lipstick lingering in my hindbrain

so my first Real Encounter with star wars as a fan concept was via Livejournal Role Play lolol, the premise of which is that you would roleplay as characters either in an AU setting, or an isekai-your-character-was-captured-from-their-home-world-somehow setting. so i was playing sakura from naruto in a harry potter/final fantasy fusion AU (there's a fun sentence) when someone joined the game with Jaina Solo from the star wars extended universe, and i just thought the character and player were the fucking coolest?

so that's how i ended up learning about like, the post-original Star Wars trilogy EU books first LMAO and then eventually i watched the original trilogy and re-watched the prequel trilogy (this was back in 2009/10 so sequel series were not on the horizon at all). i rp'd a bunch of star wars characters in a bunch of games (most notably middle aged Leia from the later EU books and a man called Kyp Durron who i refuse to believe was not the template and inspiration for kylo ren), and also played the Knights of the Old Republic games, and eventually helped create and moderate an rp based on those games. so my first star wars creative endeavors were very rp based, and kotor based, and any fic i was writing at the time was like, kyp durron and alyss from a ya novel adaptation of alice in wonderland are falling in love in the harry potter/final fantasy fusion setting where we also included pokemon so kyp has a shuckle for a pet because jaina gifted it to him as a gag. all that fic is littered around the internet - lj accounts and dreamwidth accounts and defunct aim group chats, where you'd write stuff for like the three people who were into your extremely, impossible to replicate cross canon ship instead of doing your stats homework, it was heady shit.

the username came about after i decided to abandon my old internet handle/identity of 'feilyn' lolol. basically i made up 'feilyn' as a name for myself when i was like 15 and used it everywhere, which resulted in most online friends i made at the time calling me 'fei', which in turn got cuteified into 'feibean', which is what i originally called this blog right up until someone sent me an ask going 'hey feibean' and i went oh NO i HATE that, and decided that i needed a username that was like, Poetic and Pretty

the funniest part to me is that i hadn't actually read the stover novelisation at that time? i just knew about the passage it came from because a friend had quoted it at me before and i was like oh that's Beautiful. so i did probably the most pretentious thing in the process of making a pretentious internet handle, which was to refer to a thing i hadn't actually read (i have since read the novelisation LOL and highly recommend it to anyone into star wars i general, but especially if you feel the prequels had Great Themes and Poor Execution - the book does a much better job at the execution part)

SO by the time the sequel movies were announced i had been into star wars for like, 5, 6 years? and it had been a staple part of not only my creative life but also my social and romantic life, so i was primed to be fucking obsessed. at that point i wasn't journal rping anymore, and most of my creative energy was split between fic (pjo and grisha at the time) and trying to make my original book idea work (it did not), and i had gotten into the groove of Writing Fic For An Audience.

and then the first sequel movie came out and i fucking loved it! like sure it was a little derivative, but it had so much of what i loved about star wars in it, and it especially helped that kylo ren really did seem like a kyp durron expy, and i was right in the middle of my weird heterosexual lesbianism phase where all i wanted to write was Overpowered Man Gets Stepped On By Brunette Teenager He Underestimated so reylo hit me like a fucking freight train.

i think in the first month after that movie came out i wrote like, 21 fics in he space of a month. i went to my first ever music festival and was just lying in the tent writing fic on the budget smart phone i had bought so my actual phone didn't get stolen. it was SUCH a flurry of creative energy for me, because star wars before that point had been not a dead fandom, but certainly not a fandom that had a lot of Fic-Centric Life in the spaces i was in, and the movie brought so much new blood and voices and interest and readers to the canon. so if i told people i felt like writing x thing and asked for prompts, i'd get like 10 or 12 requests at a time - more than i could fulfill, certainly, but also so many that it really fed the fire of my interest and determination to Provide Content

and then, you know, the Drama and the Discourse and the weird creation of shipping as identity where people became A Reylo instead of shipping reylo, and this formation of Antis as a thing, and on and on until fandom in general becomes this place of adversarial combat that is supposed to reflect on your ethics and moral as a person and Oh Man i do remember being exhausted by all of these arguments at the time (and now tbh, but these days i am not actively participating in them). eventually i dropped out of star wars as a fandom from like, creative and discourse burnout i think, and also my relationships with the friends i shared the fandom with were changing, and i was also changing as a person and then TROS came out and was really a death knell to any joy i'd gotten out of the fandom or canon from that point.

as for a case for watching the sequels - i think if you can watch them without needing them to Be Anything In Particular, you can have a good time with them. like, for example, i think TROS was an objectively bad fucking movie, but i had a lot of fun when i watched it because i went it with a baseline of curiosity about how or if abrams could pull this off, and the answer was 'by trying to split every fandom argument of the last 4 years down the exact middle' and 'no, he can't pull it off'. that shit isn't a movie, it's a video response to every star wars trending topic between 2015-2019. and at the time of viewing, this was very fucking funny to me. i had a ball.

SO if you can watch them with the contextual understanding of like, these are massive corporate enterprises created by committee, with different people at the helm of different movies who had very different understandings on what the point of this trilogy was, i genuinely think they can be a good time. there's pew pew lasers, there are some real affecting moments, and there is a lot of bewildered amusement to be had at nature of attempting to create Billion Dollar Art.

if you are looking for a story that is going to leave you feeling fulfilled and as though the creators had consideration and respect for either their viewers, their actors, or the story they were telling, then give them a pass. like i really really think there is a lot of fun and interest to be had in watching the sequels for both 'here is a space fantasy laser fun time' reasons and 'what does art look like when it's primary purpose is to create obscene amounts of wealth based off the nostalgia of nerds but also the concept of modernising a franchise for the 21st century' reasons, and these are both big reasons why i engage in any kind of media LOL

but i also understand the special place star wars holds in a lot of people's hearts, and not wanting to engage in material thatg feels like it has sucked a lot of the joy out of that special place is always legit. so like, if you are intrigued, give them a shot, and if you find yourself hating the experience then stop watching. trust ur heart babe

FINALLY i have no strong opinion on whether people are anon or signed in! it's all about your comfort level truly, i do not put emphasis on one mode or another. sometimes people will send me something signed in and ask me to respond privately, which i am always happy to do, and sometimes people will send messages anon, but identify themselves as like 'oh im the anon who asked about sunflowers, i'm sunflower anon'. SO YEAH whatever combination of identifiers is personally comfortable for the person sending the ask is how i prefer people to communicate.

Don´t know what´s happening but yesterday one quite big larry account on IG mentioned if Louis hasn´t dyed his hair. And idk but his fringe looks a bit darker (when looking at those fans photos from Temple bar) and maybe shinier like hair always shines when they are freshly dyed. But we don´t have any proper photos of his side where grey hair are more visible to we can only guess. But just imagine Louis saw your complains and so he really dyed his hair haha. And second thing is, other fan mentioned that Louis (still) looks very tanned. I´m not following him long enough to know if his skin colour is naturally darker whole year but my mind went into spirals what if Harry actually was on that vacation in Carribean but with Louis and tabloids made-up that story with his stunt girl just to cover them up. I mean they were mia for like 2 weeks and now Louis is back in EU while Harry is in North America. Lol I just hope if nothing else, the carribean vacay is still made-up and we don´t get any photos as a proof.

I thought the same thing too! His hair, the fringe part at least, looked darker and shinier in the Temple bar pics. I looked at some of the pics from his show in Dublin last night and it's hard to tell because of the lighting. It looks a bit better but i don't know if that's just because his hair has gotten longer and kind of covers up the greys. If he really coloured it i think it would look even darker and better than it does currently. It looks very dry to me. So i'm inclined to believe he hasn't done anything to it.

He does look tan, so we can certainly speculate on where he spent his break!

okay! so this might get a little long winded lol

my main is america, but my luck there hasn't been so good so i legit made 3 alts on the other servers to try my luck and uuuh

for starters they're all alts right? very squishy units bc lack of materials and what not - and all three alts have a gepard

granted the hk alt only just got a gepard but i'm pretty sure it was bc i've been running jingyuan, tingyun, natasha, and fire trailblazer. and i swear tingyun gets singled out way too often (and as a result dies the fastest) so gepard is just like no need to worry! i am here

the hk alt is going to get a battle pass bc its just ridiculous at this point - when seele's banner was up i did a couple of single pulls and got a bronya, and then i threw the free 10 pulls at the banner and almost immediately got a seele - almost like she knew her girlfriend had come home and she just had to be there to complete the team (they actually hard carried me through the belagog story quest lol)

hk also didn't have tingyun before the jingyuan banner so i was like - i have arlan! maybe i can make a second team with arlan here? and i'll get a tingyun from jingyuan's banner no problem! and she can support arlan and i can use the fire trailblazer to protect him and natasha to heal him and -

and jingyuan comes home twice before tingyun bc he hears that i'm pulling his banner to give his best support to a 4 star? no ma am not happening on my watch

also i was on my asia account the other day and i was borrowing someone's himeko as the support unit right? and i was saying to one of my friends that hmm, maybe i don't want himeko on any of my accounts? himeko either doesn't do a lot of damage or this particular himeko is build really badly - i haven't seen double digits of damage in a while

and half an hour later i notice i have 10 pulls on the standard banner so i used them and i legit pull a himeko (i do do damage! you just need to build me correctly i can prove it-)

the eu account just has a bronya and gepard but i haven't done as much pulls on this on yet so ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ we'll see how it goes when i use my event pulls on the blade banner there lol

digging into my OWN history yet again

the funniest part is how hard and how fast i fell. post 1 is the first ever mcr post on my blog, post 2 is the same photo less than 1 month later. it was over for me.

ok as far as i know, post 1 is the first srs mcr appearance on this blog. i reblogged that 7pm on june 17, 2022, right after bonn night 1 and a day before my bee day (so technically i was there for the eu tour ^_^) under my #people and #music general tags. i couldnt find any other interactions w desertmp3 before this post, so i think .. i found their blog under #mcr, scrolled, reblogged the one photo then left. no other mcr post til jun 25 night. jun 25 or 26 i went strawberry picking and i very very clearly remember RE-listening to 3 cheers. i had it downloaded by then. i didnt know if i liked it but i kept listening over and over 😳 i remember the first time i listened to 3 cheers, i was surprised that i knew the words to the helena chorus. i spoke the words before they came up, it was weirddd. what happens when you grow up around the biggest band in the world.

according to my spotify liked songs, i listened to 3 cheers june 17 and liked these songs. i distinctly remember disliking deathwish for the longest time. i also listened to bullets (i remember only enjoying romance lol).

im not sure if jun 17 was the first time i listened to 3 cheers, but i always "like" songs the first time i listen to an album to mark it as "listened". if jun 17 WAS the day i for some reason decided to delve into this band, idk why. i was in a music slump, having gotten sick of replaying my huge liked songs playlist. i very rarely got into specific artists / albums. seeing as i didnt seem to be a desertmp3 follower pre-post 1, itd make sense that i listened to 3 cheers/bullets then looked them up on tumblr. again, why? maybe i just randomly thought of them, maybe ppl i followed were talking about the tour, maybe spotify recommended 3 cheers to me... and RIGHT on a day i treasure and celebrate. sometimes it all feels like a romance film. she was always there but i never saw her until i really needed her.

i think this photo was the first time id seen gerard outside 2006 (the “#hii” 😭). i engaged w my chem a few times under my #music tag (this post is particularly funny.. my tags.. (ALSO 70 THOUSAND NOTES. MY CHEM WAS SOOOOOOO BACK IN 2022)) then BOOM july came and i was in full throttle #mcr mode (aside: the way my tagging system works is that i mostly use general tags until im crazy about something. then it gets a special tag). ive talked about this development before.

Henry had been a fan of yours for a while. You had appeared in a few movies and TV shows, and he watched them almost religiously. You hadn’t been acting as long as him, but he firmly believed that you were way better at it than him, He had auditioned for a few of the same projects as you, but he never got the role, for one reason or another. He very vividly remembers watching the Mockingbird movie that you were in, and the feelings of jealousy he got as he watched you kiss your co star, Sebastian Stan. He almost wanted to hate Sebastian, but he had done nothing to him, so he couldn’t. Other than kiss the girl that Henry wanted for himself.

Then, one day, Anya and Freya busted into his trailer with huge smiles on their faces.

“What’s wrong?” He asked, petting Kal, and smirking at his friends. They locked eyes with each other and giggled before Freya told him what was going on.

“Y/N got a part on the show!” She squealed, and Henry felt warmth blossom in his chest in hope.

“Shut up. You’re joking!” He said, standing up, a huge smile spreading on his face. “When does she start?”

“Tomorrow!” Anya squealed, and Henry’s smile grew even bigger. He couldn’t wait.

Henry was practically shaking with excitement when he woke up the next morning. He wanted nothing more than to rush to set to meet you, but he needed to go for a run, eat, and get himself and Kal ready before he could do that.

40 minutes later, he was ready and was practically speeding to set with Kal in the passenger seat of his car. Kal had his head out the window, his mouth open, biting at the wind. Henry glanced over at him and chuckled. His stomach was feeling the same way.

He arrived moments later, and looked around the parking lot for your vehicle. He didn’t know what type of car your drive, but he noticed a black Dodge Ram 1500 that he hadn’t seen before today, so he had to assume that was yours. His eyes were darting everywhere, looking for you, while walking to his trailer. He dropped Kal off in his trailer, and filled up his food and water bowl before he left for the makeup trailer.

He walked out of his trailer, and that’s when he saw you. You were standing outside your trailer, which was opposite of his. Your hair and makeup was done, and you were talking on the phone. Suddenly, he was feeling very nervous, as you hung up the phone and your eyes landed on him. You waved at him, and the butterflies in his stomach grew as he walked over to meet you.

“Hi!” You said.

“Hi! I’ve been wanting to meet you for so long,” HEnry said as he gazed into your E/C eyes. You blushed and he opened his arms for a hug, which you willingly gave.

“Me too!” You said, and the two of you continued talking until your phone rang again. Henry glanced down briefly and his heart dropped into his stomach at what he saw. It was a picture of you and Sebastian kissing, and there was a heart next to Seb’s name.

“Sorry, that’s my boyfriend, but I’ll talk to you on set, okay?” You said, and Henry nodded with a smile, an attempt to cover what he was truly feeling.

“Of course.” You nodded, and walked away with the phone held up to your ear.

“Hey, baby...” You said into the phone, not noticing how Henry turned his back, and walked towards his trailer.

Henry managed to hide the hurt he was feeling for a few days, but Anya and Freya first noticed something was wrong when Henry walked away from the three of you while you were telling them how Sebastian was trying to impress you once, and ended up falling down his trailer steps. Henry had made it to his trailer before breaking down. Kal bounded over to him, and pressed his body against his legs. Henry sunk to the floor, and let Kal rest his head on his shoulder. He let out a whine at Henry’s crying, and henry calmed down. He didn’t want to upset the one thing that makes him insanely happy. It was you, but you were taken. he couldn’t think about you liked that anymore, no matter how much he wanted to.

Anya came into his trailer a few minutes later, and sat next to him, her hand resting on his arm.

“What’s wrong?” She asked, and Henry lifted his head to look at Anya. “I like her. So much. But, she’s out there dating that asshole.”

Anya let out a laugh, and Henry looked at her in confusion. “What?”

“Sebastian isn’t an asshole. Just because he got her before you did, you’re going to make him look like the bad guy in this situation? First of all, there is no bad guy in the situation. She’s happy with him. He’s happy with her. If you’d sit and listen to the way she talks about him, you’d understand that. He has done things for her that I’ve never heard of anyone doing for their significant others, especially those who dont care about said significant others. When they were filming together, she really missed her best friend, so he flew her out for her birthday, and paid for them to spend the weekend at Disney World together. He’s a really nice guy, but you’re going to sit here and brood simply because he met her first. Dont blame him, and dont you dare blame her.” Anya said, before giving Kal a pet, and walking out of the trailer.

Henry glared at the wall opposite him for a few minutes, before pulling his phone out and going to instagram. He looked at his notifications, and scoffed in annoyance when he saw that Sebastian followed him. Without thinking, he clicked on the three dots, and blocked him.

You might be taken, but that didn’t mean he didn’t have to be okay with it. He stood up, wiped his eyes, and headed back to set. He made a point to keep his eyes glued to his phone so he didn’t have to talk to you.

He shouldn’t be blaming you for this, but the jealous side of him told him to, since he couldn’t blame Sebastian.

You noticed Henry’s demeanour towards you go down over the course of your first week, and you were scouring your brain to figure out why while on FaceTime with Sebastian.

“I don’t know what I did to him. He barely speaks to me, he refuses to be alone with me, and if I even mention something about Marvel or our movie, he scoffs, and makes snide little remarks. He seemed like such a nice a person, and i dont know what happened.” You explained to Sebastian, while playing with your fingers.

“I don’t know, either love. I did notice that he blocked me though. I tried to follow him earlier in the week, and now I can’t even find his account, so I think he blocked me. I don’t think it has anything to do with you,” He said, giving you a sincere smile, that was full of love. You smiled at the sight of his steel blue eyes.

“Why would he hate you though? You’ve never met, and I thought he was a Marvel fan. Anya told me he was, and that he went to see Mockingbird in theatres. It doesn’t make sense.” You said. You watched as something washed over Sebastians face, and he ran his fingers through his hair.

“He might like you. I never even thought about that. He’s friends with Chris, I’ll find out for sure,” Seb said, picking up his phone and typing out a message to Chris.

“You think he like me?” You questioned, and Sebastian nodded. “Yeah, i think he does. I mean, he follows you on all your socials, comments on all your posts, he went and saw a Marvel movie by himself, and I’ve heard from a few people he’s been wanting to work with you for a while, but scheduling always got in the way. To me, its the only logical explanation right now.” He said, and you saw his face fall a little.

You smiled. “Baby, look at me,” His head lifted. “You know, even if this is true, I would never leave you, right?” He nodded.

“I know. It’s just- he’s played Superman. An actual superhero. I play a troubled 100 year old with a metal arm that he got through a debt owed to Steve by T’Challa. He’s played so many more influential roles in his career, and I haven’t even gotten the lead in a ‘superhero’ movie, I’m only a side character. And, I know you had a crush on him at one point. Plus, look at the dude! He looks like a Greek God. I don’t want to lose you.” Sebastian admitted.

You giggled slightly. “Baby, I don’t care about that. I care about you. Did you know that before I started on the Mockingbird set, I was terrified to work with you? I had the biggest crush on you, and I was terrified you wouldn’t like me back, but I was proven wrong instantly, when you came up to me and gave me the biggest hug, and told me if I needed anything, you were there for me. You waited for me on set so you could walk me to my car, even on days where you got to go before I did. You visited me when I was sick, and asked to hang out on our days off. You did that. He didn’t. I love you, not him, dragă.” You said, and he smiled. He locked eyes with you through the screen, and you saw tears welling up in his eyes.

“Si eu te iubesc foarte mult.” You responded. “I’ll see you when your plane lands tomorrow, okay? It’s getting pretty late there, and your flights in a few hours.”

You arrived at the door of Henry’s trailer less that 12 hours later, and you didn’t bother knocking. The thought of bringing Seb on set when Henry had a problem with him didn’t sit right with you, and you needed to figure out what the fuck was going on.

You walked in, and saw Henry putting food and water in Kal’s bowls. He looked up at you before returning to what he was doing.

“What’s your problem with Sebastian?” You demanded, and to your anger, you got a scoff in return.

“Who says I have a problem with him?” He said, refusing to even look at you. You felt your phone vibrate in your pocket but you ignored it for the moment.

“Seb! You blocked him on Instagram when he followed you. You roll your eyes whenever I talk about him, and get all pissed when he calls me. He’s done NOTHING to you! So what is your problem with him?” You demanded, and he finally turned around to look a you.

“He calls and texts you constantly! He always has to be talking to you. You’re here to do a job, not sit around and text your little boyfriend.” He said, and you laughed.

“Are you fucking kidding me?! I do my job perfectly well, and if you’d open your fucking eyes for two seconds, you’d see that I text him first! I tell him when I’m doing a scene, and when I’m not so he knows he can call me! Being in a long distance relationship is hard, and I’m trying to make it easier on him and I. And you say I’m here to do a job. Right now, I cant think of a SINGLE reason why I even took this job in the first place! Oh wait, I TOOK IT BECAUSE I WANTED TO WORK WITH YOU! Did you know I had an offer from Tom Cruise for The Mummy sequel and I turned it down because I wanted to work with you? I could be in Egypt right now, in shorts and a t shirt with Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis, my favourite actress, rather than in dreary fucking England, doing a show with you where you treat me worse than the horse shit that Zeus leaves in his path!” You screamed at him. His face became red, and he retaliated.

You blinked back tears, and swallowed the lump in your throat before answering. “You don’t get to hate him because he got me before you did. That’s cruel and wrong. And I didn’t sleep with the ‘first A List celebrity i could get my hands on’. I slept with him because I love him, and he loves me. And you’re right,” You felt the tears spill over, and you did nothing to stop them. “I’m sure Tom will be happy to have me, because I quit. I cannot work with you. You are not the person I thought you were at all.” Your turned to walk out the door.

“And to think that I used to have a crush on you too,” You remarked before letting the trailer door slam.

You ran down the stairs and was immediately embraced by Sebastian, who had just arrived on set when he heard your and Henry’s screaming match.

“It’s okay,” He whispered into your ear, as you started sobbing. At that precise moment, Henry walked out of his trailer and opened his mouth to speak. Sebastian held up his hand before he could.

“I think you’ve done enough damage, Cavill. I’m not going to allow you to hurt her anymore. I can’t believe, that you, out of all people, would treat her like this simply because she’s dating someone else. You may play Superman, but you definitely don’t deserve it.” He remarked, and led out away. But, Henry being Henry, decided to snark back.

“You’re one to talk. You play a 106 year old Hydra assassin who somehow managed to convince everyone around him that his a good guy. You’re no worse than I am buddy.”

“Go to your trailer, I’ll see you in a second.” You nodded and headed in. While he dealt with Henry, you called Tom to let him know you could take the role after all.

“I don’t know why you think that you can treat my girlfriend like that, but it’s not okay. You should have seen the amount of research she did for this role! She read every single book, and played every single game in preparation for this role. She was so excited, and turned down the chance to work with her favourite actress to work with you. Not many people would do that. I also dont know what I did to warrant you absolutely hating my guts, other than dating her. I’ve done nothing to you, and even if I did, that doesn’t mean you can treat my girlfriend like shit for it. I’d watch your fucking back, because unlike you, she’s a Marvel actor. The majority of her friends are Marvel too, so don’t be surprised if you get a few nasty messages from certain Avengers, because I will not withhold this information.”

Sebastian walked in to your trailer and found you on the phone to Lauren, apologizing. You hung up a few seconds later and turned to Sebastian.

“She mad at you?” Sebastian asked, and you shook your head.

“No. She understands. She says that she’s sorry that he acted that way, and that she’ll be talking to him. I called Tom and I have the role. I fly to Egypt in two months.” You said, packing up your things. Seb nodded, and moved from where he was to help you.

You took off your costume, and took your hair out. Sebastian took your duffel bag with all your things, and the two of you headed out. Thankfully, you didn’t see Anya of Freya, you weren’t in the right space mentally to explain what happened. All you wanted to do right now was get as far away from Henry as possible.

Dear My Candy Love...

19/03/2012 (d/m/y) I created my first and only account in my candy love (amor doce), when I was eleven years old. Now, nine years later, the series is about to end and I have mixed feelings about it. It's bittersweet to see something you love become "weird", as if it is not for you anymore, but I realize the game was not meant to grow with us.

When I played it for the first time, I could see myself in Candy even though I was not in High School. And that is what the game is about. Most of the things she said, did or even suffered I could relate, but now as a college student I can't say the same. Not only because it is too fictional, but how the game limits us and it becomes less something about choices and more about simply dating... And it is okay, because this is what the teens expect about life.

In HSL, me and Candy had the same struggles: making friends; dealing with bullying and some serious, yet not extreme, topics; understanding our own feelings; and even school projects were a little similar. All the boys were somehow interesting for us, in their own ways, personalities and hobbys. It was a little stereotypical, yes, and yet so fun! When all friends gathered together at Iris' house I felt that so deep and cool and in real life I was doing the same thing!

In 2018 University Life launched and with it the worst choice by beemov: change the AP system. Also, the second worst choice came and I was shook: change 3/5 of the LIs. The most popular ones, Nath and Cass, stayed and it is no surprise, but Armin, Lysandre and Kentin just went poof. Do not get me wrong, I know things like that happen all the time, but some people literally paid so they could have clothes, images and even action figures of their favorite LIs. I consider this the start of the downfall, and I know many people do too.

I did not play UL until 2019, when I got accepted in College, and... well, it is bad. Here on tumblr the community created their own OCs from the game, and seeing so many personalities and choices I knew UL would not live up to this. It is hard for a game to have this many possibilities, but after years and years of HSL I really think it was just beemoov's laziness. UL is a money maker, LL as well, and I am not afraid to say that. The game did not stepped up on anything, the writing did not grow and the extreme slow pacing (if you don't buy APs) makes UL and LL "experience" something close to watch a slice of bread mold.

The new LIs aren't a problem to me, except Hyun 'cause that outfit is just horrendous and he wears it 24/7 (just imagine a Mc Donalds worker using the uniform always). I just can't relate anymore to Candy, and her story is not thrilling. I am in episode 14 and basically nothing relevant happened, except finally kissing my LI. Priya and Hyun are so boring as just friends, while Nath has a truly dramatic plot and Cassy, well, he is even more charming as a true rockstar. Candy, Rosa and Armin became a friendship painful to watch, as they just text to talk about study and even if it is something more than that it is forgettable (ik Rosa suffered, I am talking about before that, and by the way it is a crime they did not give us any image of the three together at Rosa's apartment lol). A total of one image (the one from ep 9, so it is just.... well, a dream) feature Chani, and she is basically an angel and the best girl for helping Candy since day one. To summarize, nothing really matters except our crush... and for a old game with a strong playerbase, it could be more than just a dating simulator.

I did not play LL, but.... damn, I kinda don't want to so I cannot say much to be honest.

So, just to wrap it up: personally, I think the game didn't really grow to pace with us, older players, but if the player is still young it is very enjoyable - specially HSL. I might cry enough to fill up a bucket when it is officially over hahaha (even tho I will truly play the final episode next year due this stupid ap system djsdjsd)

O HSL é lindo do jeito que é, mesmo com seus defeitos. Jogar o UL é comparável a comer um tijolo, nem consigo imaginar o LL e talvez a cria de 6 cabeças que vai ser o próximo jogo da beemoov. Todo o orçamento do UL/LL foi pro Eldarya e ngm vai me provar o contrário.......

O UL dá um sentimento de fanfic escrita por uma menina de 14 anos: nenhum personagem secundário importa, nenhum evento é relevante para a história e tudo ronda em um relacionamento rushado.

Mas a real é que o jogo já não é mais pras pré-históricas como eu que esperam um plot coerente em tudo... Mas que o HSL é mais bem elaborado que o UL e LL juntos é inegável.

Chani foi injustiçada para um caralho qnd a beemoov nao botou a lenda em nenhuma imagem real no UL. Carregou a do7 nas costas desde o ep 1 junto com a outra lenda Yeleen.

Hi Jess :) I just had a conversation with my v anti-monarchy dad where we discussed the issues of becoming a republic right now. I don't know about you, but i don't really trust that our current PM/government would do a good job of creating a new system, and not replacing the monarchy with something else forefronts the existing issue of how well our government is held to account. I feel that cutting to a Swedish-style 'royal house' of 8 people might work, but i would love to know your opinion!

Hey anon :) prepare for a long one lol. So I might be wrong but I don’t personally think that the royals would ever be removed under a government like the one we have now. This is why I laughed at the idea the interview would end the monarchy. In amongst all the chit chat, people seem to forget how incredibly Conservative the U.K. is. I’m from Scotland which is probably the most consistently left wing part of the U.K. I’m from perhaps the most right wing part of Scotland but was still shocked to see how Conservative England was when I moved here. People get very caught up in what their Twitter feed says and forget it’s an echo chamber. Every single election I see my left wing friends being absolutely gobsmacked that the Tories won because “everyone on their Twitter said they’d vote Labour.” If my Twitter feed had reflected the U.K. political sphere Jeremy Corbyn would have led a huge majority in parliament for the last 4 years and we’d be in the EU but in reality he was completely unelectable and we’ve left. I know people might claim that younger people are more left wing so that will change but U.K. studies around this suggest that people become more conservative with age not due to generational differences but because of the psychological impact of the ageing process (x). Older people consistently vote more and are more likely to be conservative.  And the thing is Tories will all vote to keep a monarchy whereas Labour would probably be split - Keir has had to pretend to like the Queen to win back lost Labour voters - so I personally think until the government has been led by a comfortable socialist majority for a couple of elections we probably won’t see it be an option. Again I might be wrong and we might remove them next week but I just think people do the same thing every time anything political happens and never learn that Twitter doesn’t equal real life. Boris Johnson killed thousands of people during this pandemic with his shitty decisions and would still win if we had an election this year! (x)

So with that in mind I genuinely think that a government which would be providing us with the end to the monarchy would be a left wing, socialist administration and whether I trust them or not would depend on who was in charge!! I think they would certainly face a difficult process but difficult doesn’t mean you don’t do it. The difficulty for us is just that we don’t have a single written constitution, we have hundreds of laws from across 1000 or so years of the monarchy which are highly complex to unravel. I think we’d have to institute a formal constitution and most likely have a second referendum on the form of government we’d want to take. It would take a long time and we’d have to have a huge amount of trust in the person leading the process. I think it can be beneficial to have a non partisan head of state. One of the only beneficial things the monarch does provide in the U.K. is a way to curtail abuses of power by politicians. We couldn’t have BoJo issuing an executive order like Trump because the Queen signs everything. By her having that power it means someone else doesn’t. I think that person should be elected rather than an inherited role. DNA doesn’t make you suited for a job and it’s baffling in the 21st century to think that it does. But many would disagree because having it vested in one person for decades limits the likelihood of a populist president. 

In terms of having a “slimmed down” monarchy I can definitely see why you would lean towards that as it’s the direction every royal family has been going but I don’t know how well that would work. The reality is the Queen is head of state for 150 million people across the world and so having too few people would probably be impractical. If the U.K. splits up or the Commonwealth Realms leave then I could see it. It might also work if they have a system of abdication like the Dutch monarchy as we wouldn’t have a system where the monarch is almost 100 and can’t visit any of the countries she reigns over so has to hand it out to family. I also think it would be hard to make it consistent. Only a small handful of monarchies have the Royal House vs Royal Family divide which remains consistent across the generations and all of them are much much smaller in population so they can say easily that just the monarch, consort and direct heirs should work. But what if George only had one child and William and Charles passed away young? His child might not be old enough to do duties so it would make sense to have Charlotte and Louis available as possible workers. Or what if there was another Andrew type situation and someone was cut out of working? I would love to see some kind of Royal House and Royal Family divide because it makes a lot of sense for the countries that use it: it removes personal feeling - Sverre Magnus has a lower title than his sister but it’s just the way it is, it’s not personal - and also provides clarity for the public. But there are downsides when you’re dealing with a much bigger, much more active institution so I think there would be snags that might need to be worked out or the definition of who is in the House might have to be a bit broader/more flexible

If any of you guys are playing Genshin, here are my accounts since I need more in-game friends. Upper one is my main on the European server, where I actually fuck around with my faves and save my primogems and cry over bad artifacts. The other one is a reroll on the American server I made to poke my friends that I just started, and got super lucky on gacha by some miracle (mandatory "F2P btw").

So yeah :'D I need friends and I'm also flexing my recent pulls a bit.

My EU account was pretty much cursed for 2 months? I started on December, I didn't pull any character until a week had passed (my boy Razor! and I still co-main him to this day). Then it took me a month to get a 5* (Qiqi, but this worked out awesome since I like having tons of healers). Then the streak of 3* weapon hell continued until February and managed to hit pity. And by this point I bought the Welkin Moon thing for the first time since I was getting close and it was going to be either Ganyu/Xiao/Keqing. And from them, the one I really wanted was Xiao, so by pushing my bad RNG a bit I succeeded.

Then I got the random Diluc 4 pulls later lol. At this point, the Venti rerun rumors were big and this worked fantastic since that meant next one was guaranteed. So I just stopped pulling after the Xiao banner ended and saved my ass to get Best Boy home on day 1. He even came home twice, he's c1!

Also, I only have one 5* weapon, and it's Skyward Harp. RNGesus really said "you can have sub-DPS Venti."

So yeah, kids. Persevere if you're unlucky in gacha, because sooner or later fortune will smile on you!

Reaaaally hope the luck continues because I'm going into the Zhongli rerun on pity pull 75th with 50/50 hahaha... haaaaaa. Pleeeeeease.

My American account was the other way around. I got Diluc on the second pull ever on permanent banner! I unlocked easy mode immediately, basically. I call this account "Diluc Impact" lol. I'm burninating Teyvat on commissions. Keqing was pulled randomly. Not a big fan of melee swords in this game, so I barely use her. The current event was like "it's Oceanid Lite time, wakey wakey~" so I built her up a little.

Venti was a first 50/50 win miracle that happened on Easter Sunday. Praise Lord Barbatos, hallelujah and anem! With this, easy mode became baby mode (well, I'm still struggling in some areas but now I can either burn the grass or unleash the ceiling fan).

Luck died ever since, but I like how this account is coming together. Because Venti. And KFC jokes. And I can poke people too, once my AR gets decent.

Hello, Anon! (I put this as a separate text post because I needed the “read more” which doesn’t work for asks.)

So I’m not exactly the best person to ask for meta because my knowledge of Star Wars is relatively small compared to some people’s, but I can give it a shot?? Or at least a starting point of discussion coming from my opinion. (If you’re interested, jedi-order-apologist posted two good meta related to Qui-gon a while back here and here for better reads LOL)

I try very, very hard to not have a critical view of him. I really really do. I want to love Qui-gon. I do. When I first saw TPM, I thought he was cool. I’m still sad he died. But then one thing or another comes up and just *sigh* So here are the points about him that do make me critical about him? (There’s a TL;DR at the end if you find it too long.)

***Disclaimer: these are solely my opinions here. I am not the most knowledgeable in Star Wars by far. I base these solely off my experience and understanding of the movies, books, etc. Your mileage may vary***

First off, I should point out we don’t have much canon material of him to work off of. There’s The Phantom Menace and the book Master & Apprentice -- as well as some appearances in The Clone Wars I believe? I haven’t watched TCW yet. 

There’s also the Star Wars - Age of Republic: Heroes - Qui-gon comic, but it doesn’t reveal too much about his character, at least to me, other than showing him questioning the role and path of the Jedi and finding that balance is the key. *shrugs*

Anyways, from The Phantom Menace, we are made to understand that he’s the type of person to push the envelope, who apparently goes against the Council enough for Obi-wan to bring it up. We don’t get details on how he does it those times, only Obi-wan saying “[The Council] will not go along with you this time.” Which implies he has successfully argued his way before (or possibly gone his own way and asked for permission after?).

Being a rebel is not a bad thing. A lot of our media is all about being the rebel, going against the grain, and etc. However, some people in the fandom take that to mean it’s the only correct answer, and use that as an argument that the Jedi were awful people, who needed reform and didn’t deserve to live otherwise, and etc. But clearly, Qui-gon doesn’t disagree with the Jedi to the extent that he would leave them. He’s clearly still a Jedi and believes in the Jedi philosophy.

Qui-gon is a big follower of the Living Force, of focusing on the “here and now,” as he tells Obi-wan in the beginning of the movie. He’s squarely about the present and taking things as they come. -- And yet, he’s also remarkably fixated on the prophecy, which is very much not a matter of the present in my opinion. He is very insistent on Anakin being the Chosen One and therefore should be trained as a Jedi -- to the point where he say “I will do what I must.” So basically, it’s his way or the highway. He will take no other interpretation, even if there’s no concrete evidence that Anakin is the Chosen One.

My impression of him is that he will follow the way that he believes is correct or believes that the Force tells him is correct, and will leave no room for anything else. The casualty of this in TPM: Obi-wan. When Obi-wan warns him the Council won’t agree with him, Qui-gon tells him, “You still have much to learn, my young apprentice.” Fast-forward to later that SAME DAY, when he discovers the Council will not take on Anakin (based reasonably enough on the results of their testing and long-standing rules), he tries to claim Anakin as his padawan when Obi-wan, his actual padawan, is standing right there next to him. When the Council reminds him he has a padawan already, he pushes for Obi-wan’s Trials, and says, “He’s headstrong, and he has much to learn about the living Force, but he is capable. There is little more he will learn from me.” Obi-wan’s Trials was never something brought up before, from what I understand. He basically said hours before that Obi-wan wasn’t ready, and now he’s saying he is. I’m sure he doesn’t mean to hurt Obi-wan in this situation. He’s doing what he thinks he has to in order to have Anakin part of the Order. But it’s NOT COOL to throw away your existing apprentice at the expense of it. 

This whole fiasco of a scene is what has me very mad at Qui-gon a lot of times. Overall, it’s not a flattering view of him. As I like to say, his intentions are good, his execution is very very poor.

(He and Obi-wan later make up, but I for one am still upset at him on Obi’s behalf. Especially when Qui-gon’s final words later on is to train Anakin. That’s it. Doing what he must to make sure Anakin is trained. And Obi-wan will of course honor that request, which is a giant undertaking I personally believe he shouldn’t have been burdened with, having just lost his master and just become a new knight through combat. No one in his position would have been ready for that.)

(Addition: he also never mentions to the Council or even Obi-wan from the looks of it that Anakin was a slave. This, I honestly think, is critical information that should have been expressed. For whatever reasons, he did not mention it.)   

I can’t speak about his characterization in Master & Apprentice, because I haven’t read that book yet. (It’s on my shelf, I’ll get to it eventually!) I have been warned and heard that he is quite a frustrating character in it that makes you want to throw the book and go “DAMMIT QUI-GON.” So take that as you will.

All of this is just taking account of canon. If you take into account EU/Legends content, oh boy, is that even less flattering. Get ready Anon. I present to you, Jedi Apprentice. Otherwise known as “The reasons why Obi-wan has needed a nap and hugs since he was twelve.”)

So in Legends, there’s an age-cut off for becoming a padawan at 13. Obi-wan’s last chance at becoming a padawan was with Qui-gon as his master. Due to the trauma of his second padawan Falling, Qui-gon renounced his first padawan, who was already a Knight at this point, and had since refused any other padawans. (It is implied that he has crushed the dreams of many children, yes.) So Qui-gon summarily said no to Obi-wan. And due to a fight and wrongful accusations by a rival/bully, Obi-wan gets sent off early to Agricorps on Bandomeer (a whole mess of thing in itself, but I digress). Anyways, coincidentally, Qui-gon is also on the same ship to Bandomeer on a mission. After...a wild ride (and Qui-gon taking the time to shoot down Obi-wan’s hopes of becoming a Knight a second time) and multiple events (including Obi-wan ending up as a mining slave), Qui-gon waffles a bit about possibly taking Obi-wan as his padawan, and then there’s a whole confrontation involving Qui-gon’s Fallen former padawan that ends with Qui-gon officially taking Obi-wan as his apprentice after Obi-wan offers to blow himself up to help Qui-gon escape and save the miners. --- This naturally makes the Council scene in TPM even worse.

Fast-forward to Obi-wan’s second official mission with Qui-gon, they end up in the wartorn Melida/Daan, where they were to retrieve the injured Master Tahl (Qui-gon’s love interest). (Yes, his second mission. I’m not counting Phindar because that was a very unfortunate detour that turned into a mission. They went Bandomeer --> Phindar --> Gala --> Melida/Daan. No time skips that I picked up. Their ship to Melida/Daan was offered to them by Gala’s Queen.) Obi-wan felt that they needed to do more, that they needed to help the youth on the planet stop the fighting and achieve peace. Qui-gon wants to bring Tahl back to the Temple at once, and basically gives him an ultimatum...and then leaves his 13 year old barely new apprentice WITHOUT A LIGHTSABER in an ACTIVE WARZONE where the combatants have shown NO qualms in killing children OR Jedi. Qui-gon goes back -- eventually -- after Obi-wan messages for help, and after several events, takes Obi-wan back as his padawan. 

The other big strike against Qui-gon would again involve Master Tahl, in which after she is killed, he mourns her to the point of absolutely neglecting Obi-wan. I haven’t re-read that part yet, but yeah, that happened in the EU. 

So basically, in Jedi Apprentice, you get a good number of scenes where Qui-gon clearly cares for Obi-wan, is fond of him, etc. There are ways in which they connect with each other very well, and their thoughts reflect each other’s, which points to how they are in fact a good match as master and apprentice and is lovely to see. But he is also at times very uncommunicative and neglectful and...not a very good Master or someone that should be responsible for children by the looks of it. (All of which is probably rooted back to the trauma of his Fallen padawan.)

The whole caveat of all this is that these are all not canon now. These were also obviously books meant for kids, so when reading them as an adult, things become very very unflattering and there’s some hand-waving and logic that just makes you go UMM? 

The short of it: my main issues with Qui-gon are 1) in canon, throwing Obi-wan under the bus in that Council scene, 2) in EU, being at times a neglectful Master who shouldn’t have been responsible for children, and 3) unrelated to canon or EU but becoming more and more a big part of my negative feelings towards Qui-gon, the way certain parts of fandom choose to prop Qui-gon up on a pedestal as the One Good Jedi who knew better than the rest of the Jedi, and they build him up by wrongfully tearing down other characters.

I'd say "pledging yourself to the Sith" is a flaring statement that you agree with their goals and methods, and thus become an enemy of the entire galaxy so there's no need to examine whys and ifs. If you stop to contemplate, you lose because the evil guys overrun you. The idea is actually simple since there are always only two Sith, exterminate them both and at least THAT prob is solved. Pragmatic thinking, when it comes to danger like the Sith, is not evil or putting the Jedi on the same level

Yes, I agreethat pledging yourself to the sith means you agree with them. I never arguedwith that. but I don’t agree there is no need to examine whys and ifs. I dunno ifthe Jedi really practiced that since they are always so hesitant and passive,always allowing the dark side the initiative. Which is baffling since dark sideforce users are definitely more dangerous than battle droids so killing thoseon sight should actually be more “proper paranoid”.

Thisapproach “the only good enemy is a dead enemy” is so overly simplistic itbecomes dangerous. it’s understanding coming from soldiers risking their lives, but not when it comes from galactic leadership (andone the of “wisest” men in the galaxy). also the clones were “brainwashed” intothinking that. they were bred to think like that so they remain loyal to theRepublic. The ones who did try to question the Republic’s approach realizedthings weren’t that simple.

Another important aspect the JediOrder is the hypocrisy. What they preached and what they actually did were verydifferent things. they said they were had compassion for ALL life but galactichistory is filled with situations where the Jedi allowed death and poverty togo unchecked to protect the interests of political leaders. Sith shouldn’tbe executed for believing in whatever they wanted to believe or for whatemotions they feel, they should be held accountable for their actions. that’s why a trial is soimportant. it allows people to understand why the crime happened and gives thecriminal a change to understand why he’s on trial and what their punishmentwill be. When you don’t do that, it’s not justice and you’re also destroyingany possibility of rehabilitation. If you don’t create a mechanism in placethat allows you to humanize your enemy will never be able to separate the real responsiblefrom their victims. That’s why Yoda died believing Anakin was a bigger threat tothe galaxy than Palpatine. killing Vader was never about justice, it was aboutkilling a Sith without any attempt to understand how he become one and what hewanted which almost lead to destruction of the Rebel Alliance.

The Jedi are not passive or hesitant(at least not when it comes to the Sith). They believed a balanced galaxy werea galaxy where all the sith were destroyed.

There’s nothing hesitant or passive aboutthe Jedi accepting a slave army to destroy them, about them sending kids towar, about plotting to have Dooku assassinated, about using a pregnant lady asbait, about forcing one Jedi to kill his best friend, about manipulating a kidto kill his father, about telling the same kid to let his friends die becausetraing to kill a sith as more important, etc. Again, there’s a huge gap betweenwhat the Jedi preach (“compassion to ALL life”) and what they actually do.

I don’t know why but I find the prospectof dark force users “standing trial” as suggested by somesimultaneously funny and being unrealistic utopian dreams. Like, how is thatsupposed to work? Like Ahsoka’s trial in TCW? As if the darksider would juststay still and let a trial happen, lol, he/she would kill everyone in the courtroom and then escape. In one EU work there was a trial for Ulic-Qel Droma infront of the entire Senate. Then Exar Kun, his master, shows up. One guess whathappens…

What’sfunny and unrealistic about justice? Is our justice system perfect? No, it’s aflaw system made by flawed people. but it’s the best we got and it definitely beatsthe alternative. Should people allowed to execute each other without any kindof attempt at justice because the system is not perfect? that’s lazy and veryvery dangerous. I mean, a trial would be too complicated so just let’s killpeople be executed then…

And whywould a force-sensitive trial would be so unfeasible? They would be put on trialfor crimes committed. A sith crimes are very realistic crimes, so why would atrial be so impossible? They would be on trial for murder, corruption, slavery, attempted murder, terrorism, torture, etc. if a sith was captured by the Jediand were to stand trial the Jedi would be there to keep the order. As you said,it was two vs thousands and I’m assuming precautions would be taken. Plus,giving up on justice because the accused is dangerous or might is escape is aterrible reason to give up on justice. We have dangerous people on trial everyday and we still try do keep the system going because you know, it’s justice. Andthe guys you mentioned are from the Old Republic, it was a different Sith, adifferent Republic and a different Jedi Order. After that the Jedi Order hadover 1000 years to sit down and think about how to deal with the Sith. Theychose to keep them a secret from everyone in the galaxy and kill them wheneverone appear.

So it’sokay for the Jedi to kill sith now indiscriminately because of what happened1000 years ago? So it’s vengeance? This implies the Jedi didn’t learn anythingin the meantime. They didn’t evolve at all. that also means the Jedi aren’tvery good at letting go (their core belief). If they still see the sith exactlyas they did in the past and feel justified in executing them because of thatthen they aren’t all that detached, compassionate and wise. By the Jedi’s ownbeliefs, and unforgiving force-sensitive is a Sith :P which one is it,  they are hesitant because they don’t want tokill sith or they are killing Sith because they are holding a 1000 years oldgrudge?

HOW COMPREHENSIVE ARE WE TALKING, ANON. /o\ :D I’m one of those people who’s a roach motel of fandoms: no matter how long it’s been, I basically never actually lose interest/leave/stop being willing to talk about it, even if I’m not as obviously active! MY GOOD OPINION, ONCE EARNED, IS EARNED FOREVER. ;D

That said, let me try to break this down in a way that might be useful, which is to say there are things I am potentially likely to post fic about sooner or later, and if you’d like me to talk about that I would be GLAD to:

Anything I’ve posted a fic in once, I will probably end up writing fic in again, even if it takes a while. The likeliest are Dragon Age, Gridlocked, Pacific Rim, and The Exorcist, because I already have ideas I’ve been turning over; but Blitz, Newsies (WHAT A JUXTAPOSITION THAT IS :D), DS9, and more original works are all on the table! MAGNUM PI, TOO. :D

The Professionals. Yes, I mean the British TV show from the late ‘70s. This is where my username’s from (though it turns out I may have spelled it differently from the way the name appears in the episode credits, oops), and I created an AO3 account using it because I was thinking about maybe posting a Pros story there ... and then BvS happened to me, and, well. I am still working on a few Pros stories, but obviously they took a back seat for a couple years there. :D

Mass Effect: Andromeda. As you may or may not have noticed, I have a way of getting fixated on pieces of media that didn’t necessarily go over well with people who know better, and despite never having finished ME1, I bought Andromeda and have finished it at least three times and I love it. *hands* OOPS.

And then there are things that I love a lot or am interested in, but fic isn’t imminent (”imminent”, lol, AS IF, SELF, YOU SNAIL OF A THING):

Detroit: Become Human happened to me, much as it happened to a lot of people, and there are many things that are not so great about it but that’s never stopped me before! :D

Any Star Trek, any Star Wars (... feature films, that is; I’m not caught up in any way on the TV shows/comics/what have you, though I’m familiar with parts of the old EU!).

A whole passel of TV shows, any of which I would be happy to talk about, in approximately alphabetical order: Almost Human, A:tLA/Korra, Battle Creek, Dark Matter, due South, Justified, Krypton, Lucifer, Sense8, Sinbad (the iffy Sky show, not the anime), Stargate (any of them!), Xena ... PROBABLY MORE I’M NOT THINKING OF. /o\

And lots and lots of movies, yikes, but let’s just say franchises I care about include Die Hard, Ritchie Holmes, the Huntsman movies, Hellboy, Mad Max (... okay, mostly just Fury Road for that one), the MCU, Ocean’s (11-13 AND 8, man, I LOVE 8 SO MUCH) ... Basically I like action and magic, and things that aren’t taking themselves too seriously but are committed to an aesthetic. :D Oh, and Hornblower! Aubrey/Maturin (... okay, mostly the movie, but I intend to read the books)! AGE OF SAIL, WOO. Also, animated Disney everything.

Books! I don’t read as much as I ought, but I love Austen (and all the movie adaptations thereof) and various Brontës (Wildfell Hall’s my favorite, Wuthering Heights is ... not, Jane Eyre’s in the middle there somewhere), and there’s all kinds of fantasy and sci-fi I’m familiar with, from Redwall to Harry Potter to NK Jemisin and Le Guin to Scalzi to Honor Harrington. :D

As for questions, I like all sorts! Don’t be afraid to ask me whether I know things that aren’t on the above list and talk about them at me, because even if it turns out I don’t, I love listening to people talk about things they like. :D I’m happy to be tagged in memes but horribly slow at getting around to them, and I love being asked for headcanons but I’m also horribly slow at answering those, because I usually need a little while to let my brain turn over the question and see what it spits out! I don’t mind getting prompts in the LEAST, though they will probably only occasionally result in ficlets because I’m AWFUL at writing short things. /o\ AWFUL. But a year later a 20k version might end up on AO3. :P And of course if there’s ever anything you want to know about my fic or my writing or, you know, me, ask away! :D

Book Review: Star Wars: “A Certain Point of View”

People have mentioned the nu!canon Star Wars story collection A Certain Point of View for a while, but I finally got around to reading through it this week. Essentially, it's the plot of A New Hope seen through 40 different characters/perspectives -- from the captain of the Tantive IV to a Rebel soldier witnessing the medal ceremony after the Battle of Yavin.

I am used to the EU story collections--Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina, Tales from Jabba's Palace, etc--so it was a little jarring for me to see the backstories of various cantina denizens, like the Tonnika sisters, significantly altered. The stories in those EU collections tended to refer back to each other, and there's much less of that here. Too bad; that was fun.

What's odd about this collection to me is that it reads like fanfiction. I don't mean that in a derogatory way; the tone and quality of the stories varied so widely, and the stories were so focused on side characters and interstitial spaces (or re-interpretations of canon from different angles) that it felt like I was reading a collection of A03 stories that someone had appended together and bound in book form....

There are also some odd plot holes that leave me puzzled, and I'm not used to coming away with that feeling from something professionally edited and published.

For an example of what I mean, let's take Meg Cabot's story "Beru Whitesun Lars"--which, as the title suggests, is a first person narrative of Aunt Beru's life and experiences raising Luke--but it's unclear at the beginning when exactly this story takes place in relationship to the film events. A few paragraphs from the end, Beru mentions as an aside that she's dead--but there's never any answers regarding 1) HOW it's possible for her to be narrating from beyond the grave, and 2) WHO she is addressing this monologue to.

Now Meg Cabot is a successful author, with a lot of books under her belt, so in theory she knows what she's doing, but I finished that story feeling that either she or I had missed something there--and I was reasonably confident that it wasn't me.

Another example is "Whills," by Tom Angleberger, which I think is supposed to be a funny interpolation of the opening crawl of the movie but just... doesn't work for me at all. It's set up as a comprehensive account of the story written by the mysterious Whills... and then there's back and forth dialogue with no clue as to who's talking, what or why. I can see where they trying to go with it, but it just fell flat, and was an odd note to end the book with.  (And shouldn’t it have been at the beginning?)

Every anthology or story collection has its strong and weak points; which ones those are vary depending on the the writers and the tastes of the reader in question. That said, I was surprised to see relatively few established Star Wars writers (and almost nobody from the old EU) and a lot of celebrities, such as Wil Wheaton and the voice actress for Ahsoka Tano. Not to suggest that people can't wear multiple hats or have many, just that it was a very different tact from what I was expecting. Very few of the names on the cover leaped out to me as "people I would expect to be in a canon Star Wars anthology".

More random thoughts:

-Lots of emphasis on connecting to Rogue One and the prequels, which is fine if you liked Rogue One, I guess. -It's also unusual to have an anthology where so many people die at the end of their stories. Not good or bad, just different. And inevitable, given the subject matter. -All the random Imperials who come in contact with Leia immediately fall under her spell and start to defect. LOL. The same thing happens to the Jawas and droids that Artoo encounters - double LOL. -The guy who does the Darth Vader and Son cartoons contributed a single-panel comic-- which counts as a 1,000 word story, right? -All of the stories involving Imperial bureaucracy (Ken Liu, Mallory Ortberg, etc) are hysterically funny. -There are two Tusken stories - the one written by author of Kenobi is decent, and the one that isn't... is just odd. I think it's about the female Tusken viewpoint character stealing a khyber crystal out of a Jawa sandcrawler while the traders are bartering at the Lars farm so she can sell it for passage off planet, but I'm just not sure WHY. -Aww, I feel so bad for the little red droid...but he comes out all right in the end. -Chuck Wendig managed to bring some pathos and PTSD to Wuher, the cantina bartender, and explain why he hates droids so much! -No idea what was going with the Mouse Droid story, sorry. -Nnedi Okorafor's "The Baptist," about the dianoga in the trash compactor, rivals the crackiest thing that Legends had to offer--and considering how otherwise unimaginative most of the nu!canon offerings are, I find this incredibly refreshing and bizarre at the same time. -I don't really agree with Gary D. Schmidt's depiction of what Yoda is doing on Dagobah during all this, but I was so pleased to see it included anyway. Likewise, with Biggs and Obi-wan's perspectives. -The guy who does the Shakespearean Star Wars series gives Palpatine an extended monologue in iambic pentameter, LOL. -"Grounded," by Greg Rucka, about the ground crews watching over their ships on Yavin during the battle against the Death Star, is completely heartbreaking, and a great perspective on what it takes to actually fly a fighter against the Empire. -"Contigency Plan" by Alexander Freed, is a chilling look at Mon Mothma's thoughts about what will happen if the Alliance doesn't win at Yavin. -Probably the best story in the collection is "The Angle" by Charles Soule-- a hilarious and awesome look at Lando's take on the Battle of Yavin!

The scary and empowering realization from a collection like this is that writing a good Star Wars story is not out of my reach AT ALL, and in fact, might even compare favorably to some established nu!canon. Wow. And after struggling with most of nu!canon material thus far--lookin' at you, Legends of Luke Skywalker!--it's nice to find a few pieces I actually like, too.

you know what’s ridiculous? germany has always prided themselves in being one of the few countries that educated their people about their national history and that actually reflected upon it, trying to learn from the past’s mistakes, so people like hitler and the things he did wouldn’t happen again. and I personally think it worked. until now.

germany’s right-winged party, afd, received 13.2% of the votes, gaining 87 seats in our parliament, which hasn’t happened in over 70 years, so basically ever since the war ended. the afd says that “we” are going to take back our country but the only thing we’re doing is taking steps backwards. this is absolutely horrible and I’m utterly terrified of what’s going to happen in the next 4 years. I hope you all know that the afd wants to leave the EU, and if it ever comes to such a referendum and we’re stupid enough to vote leave like a certain other country did, the EU is most likely going to collapse because we all know Germany is holding that whole goddamn thing together lol.

every country always taught us not to be proud of our country because we were immediately nazis if we even did so much as raise like one flag. nevertheless, I’ve always been proud of my country because like I mentioned before, we really are one of the few countries who reflect upon our history and aren’t proud of it (seriously, I know what hitler did was fucked up and not okay but are we ever going to talk about what america did? the uk? y’all are always so proud of your countries’ history and your achievements and in the meantime like to forget about the country’s imperialism or the american indian genocide because it’s been centuries since then and you “can’t be held accountable for what these people did”, so you would rather still be pissed at germany and act like we’re the worst country on the goddamn planet just because the second world war is the most “recent one” and you’d like to distract from the horrible actions of your own country. like I said, I’m aware of the horrible things hitler did and I don’t support it at all but like you guys would say: we can’t be held accountable for what he did because it’s been 70 years. yes, remember and educate others about what he did but stop blaming us), we’re changing the world in a positive way and helping others who are in desperate need of help. we also have a great football team btw. so yes, I’ve always been proud of Germany, I’ve always liked to call myself german. but after today? seeing those results?
