Our latest YouTube video: Union Square Greenmarket, NYC Farmers Market Food Tour is now live on our JamesandKarla channel!
Full video: https://youtu.be/pvM0twjONfg
In this outdoor Food Tour, we visit the Union Square Greenmarket in NYC and get to know many of the farmers, bakers and fishers who grow the wide variety of food and plants that are sold at the market.
Union Square Greenmarket was founded in 1976 and is located on the north, west, and east sides of Union Square Park in New York City and is open year-round Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays. It is estimated that 60,000 shoppers come by the farmers market on any given day.
We visit many vegetable, plants, fruit, meat and grain farmers including James Durr Flowers, Stokes Farm, Van Houten Farms, Caradonna Farm, Fantastic Gardens, Gorzynski Ornery Farms, Keith's Farm, Grazin' Angus Acres, Migliorelli Farm, Oak Grove Plantation, Tweefontein Herb Farm, Union Square Grassman, Stokes Farm, Sycamore Farms and S & SO Produce and get some of their freshly harvested crops and meats.
We also visit a few jam, honey, syrup farmers including Berkshire Berries, Andrew's Local Honey, Tremblay Apiaries, and Phillips Farms and purchase some delicious jam and honey.
Our rescue dog Hudson also comes along with us as dogs on leashes are welcome at the Farmers Market. Hudson not only samples many of the goods but also gets lots of attention from the farmers including a local farmer from the Catskill Merino Sheep Farm who produces superfine merino wool. We even purchase a dog treat for Hudson from Roaming Acres, which not only sells bison, ostrich, pork and pastured chicken but also sells pet products including ostrich and bison bones.
We would love for you to subscribe to our channel and hit the thumbs up and notification bell and please share if you enjoy the video. We will be posting new videos weekly, highlighting small unique businesses in NYC.

I was honored to paint Hudson for James and Karla Murry (amazing photographers of NYC) and welcome them into my studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Also, so thankful for the in depth video they made of the project on their YouTube stream: https://youtu.be/A5H9hH-FS4o
A quick introduction and hello to everyone that just found out about my artwork. I'm an artist in NYC with a studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, but I draw all around the city and post that here on Instagram as my "Nick's Lunchbox Service" daily drawing project (I haven't missed a day in 8 years). Check out my website nickgolebiewski.com for paintings, to request a commission, and to sign up for my mailing list (I'll send out announcements for things like participating in OHNY this Sat. Oct 16) - and I have prints available on my Etsy shop at etsy.com/shop/NickGolebiewski

Saddest story I have seen today #rip #livebaitrestaurant #livebait —————— Posted @withregram • @jamesandkarla Live Bait, a restaurant and bar located across from Madison Square Park was founded in 1987. When we interviewed the co-owner Carolyn Benitez for our book “New York Nights”, she told us that they”took over the space from an old Irish pub. The wood bar and neon signage that says “Bar Restaurant” was installed in 1941 and we decided to keep it because it was very recognizable”. Sadly Live Bait closed after 31 years in business in 2018 and although the neon signage remained, it was reinvented as a taco and tequila bar called Flat Fix but that too closed during the pandemic and we are extremely sad to report that the storefront stripped of its neon is now home to a Popeyes franchise, which we could not even bear to photograph. • • • • • #storefront #jamesandkarla #neon #disappearingfaceofnewyork #divebar #divebars #neonsigns #neonsignage #bar https://www.instagram.com/p/CdQyGqULpa0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

At the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge
May 25 at 6:34 AM · Yesterday was the birthday of the Brooklyn Bridge as it first opened 138 years ago! In honor of this New York City icon’s birthday, we are highlighting the Bridge Cafe on Water Street at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan. This historic restaurant and bar was originally opened in 1794 as a grocery and wine and porter bottler. Sadly the building which houses the Bridge Cafe was severely damaged during Hurricane Sandy and remains closed today.

I am so utterly heartbroken 💔 at the news of @jimmywebbnyc @ixneedxmore’s passing today 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔 Back in October of 2018, I reached out to Jimmy for an interview feature for my show, #LastRockersTV. He gave me his phone number and we had a long phone call chatting and getting to know each other before the interview. He was the most fun to talk to - a true light, a star ⭐️ My friend @jesuschristophzzz @crazyandthebrains assisted me on the interview, and even though Jimmy was super sick at the time still recovering from being hospitalized, he gave everything he had and was still so passionate and energetic. He welcomed us, told us his stories and spread his love & joy. I’m crying as I write this re-living being in his presence. Later when I started working for @funkplusofficial at the trade shows, Jimmy would call my boss Mike for business stuff & to catch up and we’d say hi. He’d say “my two favorite people together!” Last May I was back in NYC again so Jimmy & I met up for breakfast. He was so funny when I told him I was vegan 🌱, he said “I have no idea of any places that have food like that! I like my eggs!” I found us a cute little cafe near his shop that had food for both our respective dietary preferences where we ate, laughed & chatted. Before hitting his store, we stopped at another clothing store next to his & his passion for fashion really showed. He looked at all his neighbors new pieces, oozing over the good ones & catching up with the shop owner. I just enjoyed watching him live moment to moment & his excitement & joy. We popped into his shop & some more of his friends @jamesandkarla stopped by to film for their show and catch up! Just a day in the life of Jimmy. He was such a presence and will be so missed. Today I am utterly crushed. 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔 #jimmywebb #ixneedxmore #nyc #nycpunk #jimmywebbnyc #funkplus #ineedmore #crazyandthebrains #rockandroll #nycrocknroll #rocknroll #punk #punkrock (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-_Wt0khezK/?igshid=7t9ies3h4rzb

Halloween Dog Parade & Dog-friendly Spots NYC
We attend the 29th Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade with our rescue dog Hudson and watch from start to finish and meet and talk to many of the contestants and dog winners! We also visit a few dog-friendly spots in the east Village. The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is the largest costume parade in the world and this year was held at the East River Park Amphitheater located along the East River at Grand Street in the Lower East Side on Sunday, October 20th. Hundreds of dogs in costumes attended and thousands of spectators watched as some of the most creative, cutest, conceptual and elaborate costumed pups paraded by. Over a thousand dollars in prize money provided by Petco was bestowed upon the best-dressed dogs. We highlight all the winners including Four Honorable Mentions and Six Top Prizes including Best in Show. Since this year's Halloween Dog Parade was not held at its founding place in the East Village because of anticipated attendance, we walk to Tompkins Square Park and go inside its amazing dog run, New York City's "First Dog Run" located at East 9th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B. We also visit with our dog Hudson, New York City's first dog cafe, Boris & Horton, located on Avenue A at the corner of East 12th Street, just down the street from Tompkins Square Park. You can go inside this coffee shop and event space with your dog and enjoy coffee, tea and an vegetarian menu while your dog gets to roam around free and meet other dogs and enjoy dog treats. Hudson had so much fun making new "dog" friends and relaxing inside this unique cafe. After having a delicious cup of Boris Blend drip and Hudson enjoyed a "ghost" dog treat at Boris & Horton, we walk to Holistic Petcare by Whiskers on East 9th Street by Second Avenue. This shop was founded with the mission to bring the benefits of holistic wellness concepts for pets to the public. We go inside with Hudson and meet and speak with the owner who not only gives advice on which products and course of action can help your pet but also offers a wide selection of unique non-toxic and hypoallergenic, naturally preserved foods, treats and toys. Hudson of course gets some treats and we also bring a box of healthy animal crackers home with us for him to enjoy later. We would love for you to subscribe to our channel and hit the thumbs up and notification bell and please share if you enjoy the video. We will be posting new videos EVERY FRIDAY, highlighting small unique businesses in NYC. SUBSCRIBE TO NEVER MISS AN EPISODE: https://www.youtube.com/c/JamesandKarla

from wikipedia entry:
(2013)
339 Grand Street, also addressed as 57 Ludlow Street, located at the corner of Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City was completed in c.1831-33 in the Federal style as one of five row houses constructed by John Jacob Astor on property he purchased in 1806. The early tenants of the building were several dry goods merchants. The rear addition on Ludlow Street was built c.1855. The front of the house has been a storefront since at least 1884.[1]
The house, a rare example of a surviving Federal-style house in Manhattan, is the only one of the five row houses built by Astor that is still largely intact. It features "a front facade with Flemish bond brickwork, high peaked roof and dormer", and the rear retains its "flat roof, stone lintels and sills, and cornice." The house is 3.5 stories in height in the front – three in the rear – and is 17 feet (5.2 m) wide.[1]
The house was designated a New York City landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission on October 29, 2013.[1]

We announced last year that the Federal row house building that houses Ideal Hosiery is up for sale and we recently checked up on the shop and found that it is still open for business. This long-time men’s hosiery #storefront on Grand Street (its been open since 1950) which we photographed for our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York” in 2004 never ceases to amaze us as the window displays are full of dusty faded undershirts 👕and inside are rows of boxes 📦 of products that form a narrow aisle, and don’t look conducive to a vibrant business. The building is landmarked (it was built between 1831-1833 by John Jacob Astor) and has a pitched roof so it’s unlikely that a developer will be allowed to build higher than its present 3 1/2 stories but the air rights can be transferred to an adjacent lot. • • • • • #signage #shopsmall #typography #dailytype #fontastic #storefront #ig_signage #everything_signage #signgeeks #signcollective #signsunited #seeyourcity #typevstime #type #momandpopstorefronts #supportsmallbusiness #handpainted #shoplocal #lowereastside #analog #hosiery

5.20.21 Lunchtime drawing: Meeting up in Stuyvesant Square today with James and Karla to sketch their dog Hudson — partly to prep for a watercolor painting of him. He ate so many treats while sitting for the painting! Also, James and Karla are photographers who have been photographing storefronts in NYC for decades and I love their work.

#repost that brought to mind Club Foot, my own CBGBs from my 80s Austin days — more on Club Foot here ➡️ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_Foot Posted @withregram • @jamesandkarla Happy belated birthday to the legendary CBGB which opened on the Bowery on December 10th in 1973. CBGB became known as the birthplace of American punk rock, giving groups such as Television, The Ramones, Patti Smith, and Blondie their start. 🎶 This iconic #club lost its lease and closed in 2006 and a John Varvatos clothing store took over the former #storefront of CBGB but preserved some of the original graffiti-covered walls of CBGB and even the newer bathroom 🚽in the store has a nod to its infamous graffiti past. Our photo of CBGB appears in our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York”. • • • • • • #jamesandkarla #punk #punkrock #punkmusic #punkhardcore #omfug #punkrockers #punkrockmusic #cbgb #disappearingfaceofnewyork #musician #musician #rocknroll #rock https://www.instagram.com/p/CXej2X4PZt6/?utm_medium=tumblr
