(Look, I apologise in advance for what I am about to unleash. I have the fashion sense of a particle accelerator, so I should not be throwing bricks around this Hadron collider, but I just want a reason to be a bit of an asshole to and with words and have an excuse to post pictures of Marta de la Reina’s face. You’re probably a good person, so you do not deserve my fashion reports, but you’re here and until you leave—)

Brave and bold of her to try the albino tiger print and I appreciate the black velvet fuzz collar and cuffs. Gives a very Russian empress on safari look, especially with those pearls. Probably straight out of Anastasia Beaverhausen's summer collection. And despite being period accurate there’s just something about the double breasted dress that is - I mean it can afford to double the breastedness, that’s rich. Not that you’d ever mistake someone with the surname de la Reina for being poor, but sometimes it’s just easier to bring a wardrobe that in itself is so posh it probably insults the dry cleaner and is rude to the valet on its own accord. That’s money, baby. 

That said, I’m still not convinced any woman in her forties should be wearing any kind of animal print at all. Even animal prints that aren’t actually animal prints, but just look like that when you’ve got gravel in your eyes and an active imagination. Unless of course she makes it her entire personality, then it’s okay, then it’s a life choice. And I respect those. 

It’s decent though, I wouldn’t scramble for a crucifix to expel it back to hell but it doesn’t loosen my jaw either. It does get a bonus 0.5 just because she wore it when she got her flirty flirt on with Fina and her crazy-making mouth.

FAM S4 is coming HELL YEAH LFG fandom ask meme

In an effort to turn my hyperventilating about the S4 trailer in a (slightly) more productive direction, I thought it would be fun for the FAM enthusiasts on tumblr (the few, the proud, &c) to talk about what we love about the show so far and what we’re hoping for from the new season.

I will never get over just HOW MUCH Flozmin content there is! Like the longing best friend phase? Check. The emotional watching the love of your life get married to someone else phase? Check. The coming out phase? Check. The ex comes back to town? Check. Finally getting together? Check. Moving in? Check. Working through each others anxieties and fears? Check. Talking about having a family? Check. Getting married and having a family? CHECK. Like WHAT

Yes, yes and yes!!! And this is why I’m glad it was from a telenovela. Flozmin had amazing screen time. Telenovelas have, on their part, that they air daily for more than 45 minutes and for half a year, and on Las Estrellas, with Flozmin, they used all that time in the best way possible. Truly rare. They gave us everything and they told their story in a beautiful way. The thing I love most about Flozmin is the slow burn…uuuuuu it was PERFECT, perfect. And the fact that Flor left Dani on the altar is something I’ll never forget. I just- a woman leaving her future husband on the altar because she realizes she has feelings for another woman????? AMAZING CONCEPT. I LOVE IT.

Why are we not talking about the unemployed JR look? Like, we've never seen her not well dressed and rocking the hot professional look. Sure, they're PJs, but we've still never seen her that unmade before. Considering one of the things they admire most about each other is their ambition and drive, I wonder how they'll handle one of them being unemployed and probably a bit down and insecure about that.

Technically JR isn’t unemployed yet, and I’m really hoping she can appeal and not get disbarred. Otherwise I’ll just be really sad.

But SAME THE UNMADE JR LOOK IS THE BEST. She’s so cute I cannot deal. I hope we get to see more of her like that (and Petra in sweats too)! Girlfriends being cute, I’m here for it!

(@fangirlintheattic here) How do you feel about Sydney's dramatic 'transformation'? I think I was so in love with her character in S3 that I was really bummed when she came back looking more, dare I say, 'basic'. I liked the metaphor of losing her glasses and all, but she just seemed TOO different. Like I don't even recognize her as the same person, you know? Her whole demeanor changed. People do change when they come out but that much in that short amount of time? Or is it just me?

Hello! That is... a very interesting question. I did notice the change, but to be honest didn’t think too much into or about it. So let me do so now.

If we follow the Hope Zion universe’s timeline (which I haven’t scrutinised with a nit comb so it’s probably not watertight if we think about it too much ha), taking what Maggie said in 5x10: they’ve known each other for three years. Key events in Sydney’s life in that time: 

Got engaged 

Realised she was gay

Came out as gay

Slept with a woman for the first time (possibly any person for the first time)

Moved overseas

Entered a relationship with a woman

Three years on its own is a long time for someone in their 20s NOT doing all of that. Sydney went through at least three life-changing events in that space of time (depending on how you define them). I think it would be fair to argue that she would be completely different to s3 Sydney. A lot of Sydney’s growth that we’ve seen has been a maturity growth; a perspective growth; growth as a person—in my view, all of these are qualitative changes and almost impossible to show in a visual medium.

So, visually, Sydney’s transformation works because we can contrast how she was in s3 to s5. It’s TV shorthand to say, “Hey, this is how much she’s changed; this is how she was, and this is who she is now. The difference is striking—here’s how much her character grew while she was away/off-screen.” By putting a “before” and “after” photo of s3 Sydney to s5 Sydney, you can immediately tell how—and how much—her character has changed. 

It’s hard when you have key plot threads to deal with per episode without adding in all that exposition, so they literally show it through her demeanour and transformation, as you say. Can you say it’s a little clunky? Sure. But Sydney’s a supporting character to a supporting character (Maggie) so trying to shoehorn in all of that characterisation whilst tackling her burgeoning relationship with Maggie in like 10 mins tops of screen time per episode... In that sense, I appreciate it for what it is, and I think they’ve done it well.

Thinking about the actual change between “Very Jewish” Sydney and “basic” Sydney... I think the way I would think about this is that: s3 Sydney defined herself as an Orthodox Jew. Everything she looked at was through her religion—everything she did, thought she needed to do, her opinions, how she interpreted the news/people/events—that was who she was. So how would the writers show that contrast between the other characters and especially Maggie? By immediately putting her and Maggie at visual odds. Her wardrobe was conservative. Her spectacle frames were not in line with the current trend. Her hair was different to how others wore theirs. And etc.

The trajectory of her character arc was that Maggie was the catalyst for her to come to that realisation of who her “true self” was, and then accepting that. The key here is that she was out of place in the world of the TV show. Even in s3 we can see how her costuming changed towards the season finale.

So now in s5, Sydney has almost... fallen in line, you could say, with the world that is Hope Zion. And looking at it from 5x10 which is the latest episode for me, even her back in scrubs has certified her not just as HZ staff, but stamped her as belonging in the actual universe now. Is that basic? Yeah, you can say that. Because you’re right—why would you want to watch a character who was so different and striking before who has now become the same as everyone else? But in the context of the show, this is how they’ve chosen to show that Sydney is ready to be with Maggie. She’s embraced being in the world she is in. She fits in now—visually and otherwise. 

A good thing to note is that the show constantly reminds us that Sydney is Jewish and that her Orthodox beliefs are still important to her. It still colours her temperament and her interpretation of the world around her. But for the purposes of her storyline in s5 (entering a relationship with Maggie) as opposed to her storyline in s3 (accepting that she is gay), the shorthand we need now is: how will she and Maggie move forward as a couple? Are they two people on the same page moving forward in life together? Visually, I can tell they are more aligned than they used to be. For me, their conflict used to be their personalities and how different they were as people and what their values were, to build a lasting relationship. Now, their conflict potentially is whether Sydney will stay in one place long enough for them to have that relationship. 

So. tL;DR. How do I feel about Sydney’s transformation? Overall I’m neutral. But I can see why the writers/staff have chosen to do what they did, and I would say that it has worked. Whether we notice it consciously or not, all of it helps to colour in a character who may not get as much screen-time to be fully fleshed out, and the visual shorthand helps us get on with the story at hand.

Of course you can also argue that Stacey Farber just rocked up as her gorgeous self and everyone was like, “Let’s not tamper with perfection,” and exit stage left.
