The tortoise and the hare

"Slow and steady wins the race"

Well, two things can be true

A rabbit is a hare

And a hare is a rabbit

Just like a turtle is a tortoise

And a tortoise is a turtle

Together they create a well known pair

Known as ‘the tortoise and the hare’

Like night and day, they’re worlds apart

Yet somehow end up in a race against each other

And in the end only one shall prevail

As the race began, the hare took off first

Running at lightning speed

Convinced that the race was won

For every time he looked back

The tortoise had barely left the starting line

To bide his time while the tortoise caught up

The hare became complacent, brazen

More and more distracted along the way

So sure he had won already

That he eventually losing sight of the finish line

You see, the hare didn't realise how quickly

The tortoise's small steps had added up

As she ever so slowly plodded along

And right when the hare least expected it

The tortoise crossed the finish line and won the race

"Time, doesn't it give some perspective?"

This could be a metaphor

Highlighting the differences between us all

But the metaphor is actually a reminder

To not lose sight of the bigger picture

After all, it’s arrogance that loses the race

At some point Taylor’s opponent showed their hand

So she focused on playing the long game

Working towards playing an ongoing game of chess

Against a player wrapped up

In playing a simple game of checkers

This involves a painstakingly slow progress

Of taking two steps forward and two steps back

Alowing the opponent to win the round

As a distraction from taking a step forward

To lull them into believing they’d won the game

It makes them see the small steps taken backwards

As a sign of defeat

To avoid looking around

And seeing the trail of breadcrumbs

Hidden in plain sight along the way

In the end it’s death by a thousand cuts

When you’re playing a game of checkers

Over and over and over again

Only to suddenly step back and realise

That you’ve reached checkmate in a game of chess

"I'm taking my time, taking my time
