okay so I was thinking about what the world could’ve had if we were given a 12/clara/missy throuple moment. Like. the dynamics there would be insaneeeee and I Need to see that play out because it would be so chaotic but also fun and also that old man (gender neutral) would not have a Second of peace. I was inclined for a second to say they could rival the vamps (iwtv love…. how many fucking sides even does that need. I’ll say decagon to play it safe) but they never could tbh because twelve and clara would be deranged about each other and stop paying attention to missy for like a full three minutes and she’d be like ��well, I can see when I’m not wanted. you two have fun” (genuinely and served with cunt as always) and then pop off to wherever. twelve and clara have not even noticed they’re too busy staring into each others eyes intensely. and then like three weeks later in teleports missy in the middle of a life threatening situation in like the most bizarre camp lingerie you’ve ever seen

Ship Ask: The Doctor x The Master! c:

I think I have answered this one before, but specifically for Twissy, so I will do it for them in general now, but probably will be the same

when I started shipping it if I did: Not sure, but I think it started somewhere in the sound of drums, with 'all we've got is each other' but also the way master said that he likes when doctor uses his name akjshdakjdh

my thoughts: do I have to actually add anything here? honestly, just go through 'doctor x master' tag on my blog, I think it is obvious that I love them to death, a perfect couple for me :D

What makes me happy about them: absolutely everything, that the universe always makes them meet, that showrunners always bring the master back so I can have more fun watching those two, those are my favorite stories.

What makes me sad about them: that somehow they will never travel the stars together as they always wanted to, because if they make the master 'good' as the doctor, he will lose it, as usually villains lose it when they become heroes, they stop being interesting and be themselves as we loved them in the first place.

things done in fanfic that annoys me: Honestly, have not read much with them to see a pattern that annoys me.

things I look for in fanfic: AUs, with them it is human AUs, somehow I don't want to read about them in DW universe :D

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: well, I am not sure the master could be good with anyone from doctor who universe, at least from nu who which I have seen, I would prefer the master to finally find peace with himself first, and the doctor, well, I am not sure he would be able to be happy with anyone who will die soon and the doctor will keep living, but River I guess.

My happily ever after for them: Not sure these characters could have happily ever after in a traditional way, I think their happily ever after would be them still trying to outsmart each other somewhere among the stars, sometimes trying to kill each other, but always ending up helping each other instead, cos while they want to kill each other, they would never be able to exist without another, like what their life would be if the other one dies? I don't want to think about it, cos for me, the master always lives somewhere there and has the chance to come back, they are two sides of the same coin for me, and their happily ever after would be them constantly meeting somewhere in space and time having drama and fun, as usual.

who is the big spoon/little spoon: it is different with each master, simm would be all over the bed and ten would end up falling from the bed :D missy would be a big spoon, always trying to be in twelfth space, so twelve would just sigh and keep sleeping, and dhawan, well, you would need a time to bring him to bed first and make him sleep, I think the only time he would actually sleep is if you knock him off, he always seems like he drunk 10 redbulls and a coffee, so instead of bringing dhawan!master to bed when he is accidentally falling asleep somewhere, thirteen would just bring blanket and pillows to where the master is sleeping, he would be a lil spoon.

what is their favorite non-sexual activity: like, they could have long debates on what's good and what's evil, but I think they would prefer to play experiments on some races, thinking that those are harmless but ending up with a mess instead :D

every now and then i wonder if the doctor and the master have ever on screen commented on each other's appearance. i could easily have forgotten an instance (because it doesnt fit my interpretation of them so i mightve just Ignored) and i havent seen much of classic who, but to my knowledge they dont generally do that. the doctor comments on their own new (or old) appearances, and companions do sometimes, but as far as i can remember they dont comment on each other. which makes sense to me, because as is your point, they dont see a difference, really. (i think timelords recognise each other by like,,,time fingerprint. biodata. that weird glowy stringy stuff thats there in like name of the doctor or end of time 1. i dont think faces mean much of anything to timelords in terms of identifying a person) (i also think on gallifrey, with their anti-body anti-mortality taboos, it would be super rude to comment on it) (which would make the doctor and the master actually more likely to do it than real timelords, especially with each other, but i dont think they do much in canon) (maybe it's just too mutually-assured-destruction embarassing; dhawan looking 13 up and down: alright, copycat. 13: sure and you just ended up matching accents with me again by accident, right?)

so i agree with you on that interpretation of thoschei (and i block everyone saying opinions i find annoying so in my world the majority of people agree with you here) (because the whole "friendship older than your civilisation and infinitely more complex" thing is so much of the interest, right? you cant get this with a mortal ship. or a show thats less old. the older it gets the more interesting they get) but i dont look at episodes the same way you do. which we've talked about before. i like the doctor falls (i can see why you dont), and i also like power of the doctor (but i dont think i know your thoughts abt that one in depth? dont think we've talked about it but i can extrapolate a little from this post)

i think instead of seeing (the writing of) potd as underlining this illusion of separateness as you call it, that took root so to speak in the doctor falls, i see two separate stories. related ones, obviously; you cant have spydoc without twissy (or vice versa, depending on your inclinations. i think both missy->dhawan and dhawan->missy have their potential to play with, but i tend to go with missy->dhawan) but there are two different writers telling two separate-but-connected stories. i just dont see that favoritism youre talking about. among fans (because i block) or in the episodes i watch.

generally i do also have a master-bias when it comes to their relationship. i will for example subscribe to your word choice here: "the version of you that I could control save." i find the master as the doctor's first patient an enticing idea both in terms of the sort of skewed power/control dynamic of the doctor wanting to cure/control/save the master, and as a dynamic between equals / a more generous framing of the doctor because i think the doctor means well (but road to hell etc) and because i think the master wants their care. (not that that means that like just bc they want it it's fine to control them, but just saying i think the master seeks it) care is attention. if they cant have their care they'll get it in other ways, but they want it. obviously care is a complicated form of attention because you are inherently making yourself vulnerable. you need to hand over the power. theres a friction there that im sure you know is really fun to play with with the master. their needs for independence&care go side by side with how much they resent how much they love the doctor. their need to be in control serving this sort of hollow substitute for their need to be loved. which maybe worked for a while but evidently it's not enough anymore which is why missy decided to do what she did with the vault. and why dhawan is the way he is. he seems to be begging for love even more than when missy said "i need my friend back". that was a need fairly rationally expressed. this: "you'll get used to me. everyone will. i still need a companion to ask and bask in my brilliance. come on, yaz, lets go on an adventure!" is grasping at straws.

but i was trying to say something about their dynamic as the doctor being the one in control vs their dynamic as equals, which i think exist simultaneously, swinging sometimes more one way, sometimes more the other, with vault times being a lot more the doctor in control, but (the point im trying to make:) 13s era being a lot more equals i think. it's the traumatised fighting the traumatised. they both have knives in their back. theyre both acting irrationally, emotionally, and they both have not been making right decisions since they regenerated.

to me, what thoschei is in their most recent variation (and yaz too. i wont bring her into this bc it's not the point but like,,, spydoc=thasmin in terms of parallels. yaz here has a position similar to clara's between twissy), is a study in self-destruction. thats what theyre both (all) doing. theres a red thread of suicide, self-annihilation, self-effacement, self-denial, self-deception. 13 from s12 on is continuously making choices that are bad for her and the people around her (isolating, not trusting friends, self-medicating with ginger, not doing the brave&loving doctor-y (and in this context thus meant to be correct, i think) thing yaz asks of her) shes angry, shes emotional, she makes mistakes, she fails to be The Doctor, which is why yaz has to step up and do it. similarly the master's plans are just really convoluted suicide attempts. the first one in timeless children a recreation of the doctor falls. and when that one fails the one in potd is even more extreme and beyond just dying hes trying to erase himself. he says thats what hes doing to the doctor, erasing them from existence, but really if he becomes the doctor, then it's both, isnt it? if he becomes the doctor then there is no master. hes trying to unexist himself.

and this theme to me is what "you gambled and you lost" is about. addiction. self-destructive habits. i think what the doctor is expressing here toward the master is similar to what yaz means when she goes "yeah. of course" all resigned when the doctor says "thats what my life is". yaz hears the doctor say she cant make an emotional connection, she cant trust, shes too hurt. and yaz reminds her like, hey you know the doctor would do the brave thing, which is the thing thats hard and painful but worth it. and the doctor refuses. the doctor says no. shes not gonna do it. she doesnt feel able to do it. and yaz lets it go. says okay we'll be friends.

the master doesnt say "this is what my life is", but hes shown it. to the doctor hes shown it. she doesnt know what missy did in the doctor falls (things would probably have been different if she did) so to the doctor what the master has shown to her is that theyre not gonna change. wont or cant is the same thing here. for them both. they wont change. they cant change. theyre stuck in their, azure voice: constant destructive loop.

13 doesnt get out of this. neither does the master, i mean hes not even the hero, why would he? but not even the hero gets out of this in 13s story. they both self-destruct. we watch them both self-destruct. (if you ask me, we watch yaz do it too, or at least we get a glimpse of it at the end, "of course shes okay, shes the doctor") both the doctor and yaz tried to help the person they loved, held out a hand in friendship to the master and 13 respectively. and both the doctor and yaz finally had to decide that you can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink, you know?

so thats my take on it. if she still believes missy betrayed her in the doctor falls (which i think she does), then she doesnt think missy/the master ever really was willing to change and be friends. i agree with you that theres also a factor of she needs to stop caring to survive at this point, but i dont think that necessarily means she sees the master as someone entirely divorced from missy? i dont think she does. i think it's more likely she still thinks she let herself be fooled for 70 years by hope. hope of friendship making her extend trust to someone who couldnt be trusted. and i think thats a big part of why 13 never managed to really trust her friends. especially because the master literally did this to her again in spyfall? pretending to be her friend for what might have been actual years. she cant trust her own assessment of people anymore, especially her friends, and she cant trust her own hope. and thats really tragic.

Quickfire hot take but, even though I totally grasp each of us having favorite regens of the doctor and the master, both individually and together, as symbols of their ever-evolving positions along their personal and relationship journey.... I will never ever understand fan (or canon...) portrayals that draw such a sharp line of favoritism from the characters themselves.

Missy said "they're all the Doctor to me" when recalling a memory to Clara, and to me that encapsulates the enduring nature of their intense bond. To me that is THE line. Regeneration is a form of death and rebirth, but certain core traits are immutable, particularly to two people who are narrative foils, who have known each other for centuries (or possibly millennia) and keep being thrown together by fate again and again and again.

Bottom line is, every Doctor is the same person, and so is every Master. Acting as though one of them only cares for select versions of the other is just so strange to me. They aren't us. To them, it's just like loving (or hating, or both) someone through the eras of their life. Their same life, broken down into stages od evolution and devolution. It's the same person.

I can point to the exact episode (a lol very polarizing episode in Series 10) where I think this "they're not the same person from face to face" trend got exponentially more pronounced, but anyone who knows me knows what that episode is. I truly believe it's a disservice to every version of every Doctor and Master involved.

And I really don't think that Spydoc, which came soon thereafter, is just the playing-out of the consequences of a MASSIVE miscommunication between soul mates. It IS that, but not JUST. I think all of the writing about Thoschei that followed the exacerbating episode was trying to force this inaccurate distortion, this illusion of separateness, which is part of what made the events in Power of the Doctor so painful to Thoschei fans. The Doctor walked away from the Master (literally and figuratively, ironically inviting his inevitable despair--and her own demise) partly out of understandable hurt and rage and caution, but also out of a cold, repulsed misunderstanding: "Missy was willing to change and you regressed, you're a different person than she was, and you have angered me to the point of indifference; I am able to turn off caring about you because you are unrecognizable from her, the version of you that I could control save."

Maybe Whittaker's response is intended by Chibnall: we're supposed to recognize that she's wrong but HAS to be in order to survive another betrayal by the Master, which is what makes it all so tragic.

But I think fan reception has taken the whole thing ( "each Doctor and each Master is an entirely discrete self-contained being") too far, and it bothers me, so much, I think, because it's a trope that enforces the idea that love is transactional and contingent (in such a way that also perhaps unwittingly targets the socially, culturally, and economically marginalized). If you're the "good, small, manageable version" of yourself, then you're easier to love, and it's worth the investment. Otherwise, "you gambled and you lost," and you deserve to die lying in the filth of your own poor decisions. I get why that's an appealing, vindicting plot device, from the POV of an audience member who has felt hurt or even abused IRL. I understand it, I've BEEN the Doctor many times. It just doesn't sit well with me. Maybe that's just me. I could be at peace with that, as a Whovian :P.

But, in-universe, it's based on a premise that's factually erroneous! Dhawan's Master IS Missy IS Delgado IS Simm IS Jacobi IS Ainley IS Roberts IS Beevers etc etc etc. Just as Whittaker's Doctor is a RESPONSE to Capaldi's, but ALSO still IS Capaldi's. And Tennant's. And Baker's (x2). And Eccleston's. And Gatwa's. And Pertwee's. Etc etc. Dhawan's Master was the Prime Minister of the UK and also made chairs that eat people and also cried remembering the names of people she killed. It's the SAME PERSON.

Lol, not quickfire at all. It's an old bone to pick, I know. I just can't stop finding the whole trope...very itchy.

as much as i love the doctor who fandom, we have got to be one of the worst (affectionate) i've ever seen when it comes to naming ships. like just off the top of my head we've got:

thoschei, and the many, many variations thereof. the most common name for this ship refers to neither of the most common names of the two characters that make it up, instead being based on lore that, while not particularly deep cuts, are still well outside the scope of most casual viewers

twojamie, or twamie, or highland cling, or gay married in space, (and those are just the main ones! i’ve seen others) which don't even have the excuse of referring to different iterations of the characters. all these names refer specifically to the second doctor and jamie mccrimmon, they're completely interchangeable. the ship is at just the right size to have several attempts to name it but no clear winner.

whouffle/whouffaldi, or however you spell it, which i think someone else has elaborated on in another post but i don't know how to find it without scrolling through the tag of a ship i don't like, which is a needlessly esoteric portmanteau ship name that doesn't contain the names of any of the characters involved

not to mention the countless ships that i know are decently popular but i’ve never seen any attempt made to give them a name.

Some thoughts on ship naming conventions across fandoms, bc that's what I was thinking about in the shower this morning:

I just think it's super interesting how it changes from fandom to fandom? Like okay. You have the SPN style of just smushing names together, Destiel (Dean Winchester + Castiel) Sabriel (Sam Winchester + Gabriel)

But then you look at like, the My little pony fandom and while they do the sorta the same thing it reads different bc the world of equestria has it's own naming conventions that lend to this, so rather than getting smashed together the ship names are compounded and ended up taking the first word or syllable from one characters name, and the last syllable or word from the second and you get stuff like FlutterCord (Fluttershy + Discord) or AppleDash (Apple Jack + Rainbow Dash)

AND THEN, if you look at at Doctor who, this is a show that had been a thing for 50+ years right, and the cast of characters is just so fuckin massive that the fandom has resorted to the very simple yet effect method of the characters names combined by slashes and X's. EXCEPT. there are a shit ton of variations of the same character so that's differentiated by nickname, numbers or the actors name like. Okay. You have Rose x ten. Which is. Rose Tyler and the doctor but the tenth incarnation if the character SPECIFICALLY. but you also have Rose x TenToo which is Rose Tyler and the godamn clone of the tenth incarnation if the doctor. And shipping is pretty straight forward with the doctor bc all their incarnations are numbered, but then you look at the Master, and since we have no idea how many incarnations there are of the bastard the surname if the actor portraying them is use instead of a number, so we get shit like. Simm! Master or Delgado! master.

OH AND THEN? if you look at one if the most popular ships, Doctor/Master there are literally so many different names for them? I mean it makes sense these are the characters with the most variations but it varies from shit like Three x Delgado! to names that were made specifically for different incarnation pairings. Timecock having been used commonly for Ten x Simm! and Twissy being used specifically for Twelve x Missy. Whom would probably be referred to as Gomez! We're it not for the differentiating factor that they are the only female incarnation of the master thus far. Oh and then, can't forget about Thoschei, because that is yet another name for them, which uses the smushing technique with the names the characters had before the were called the doctor and the master (Theta and Koschei )

And then you have fandoms like Wander over yonder where it's not the names of the characters that's taken into consideration, but rather, their physical attributes and personality. Black eye? Sylvia has a penchant for punching people out and commander peepers is a little fucking eyeball man with legs Skeleton dance. Wander is this peppy little fuck running around with a banjo and h

I don't even know what is going on in the Invader Zim fandom with the letter thing? Is it an acronym or a combination of different characters initials? Idk! All I know is it fucking works all across the board and the entire fandom adopted the system so kudos to whoever came up with it!

And then look at the Danny phantom fandom. Some of them make sense, using character attributes or parts of their names. Amethyst Ocean, (Sam and Danny, uses their eye colors as a defining feature) Grey Ghost

(utilizes Valerie's last name and Danny being half ghost)

Some of them just try to work of off perceived personality traits and sorta fail miserably but we've been using them for so long there's no point in changing them? Like. Savant par, (Tucker x Danny) and swagger bushie (Danny x dash)

But this master list someone made is so old and we've been using it for so long that it's ingrained in the fandom. I have noticed that newer ships are following the names and traits combo more consistently tho, like Dark Ages (Pariah dark x Clockwork, utilizes prior surname and references clockworks powers)

Idk. Its just. Very interesting how these things develop. I'm sure someone who actually knows jack shit about linguistics would have more fun breaking this shit down but. Yeah.

I understand the desire to have individual ship names for the various incarnations of the Doctor and Master; hence “best enemies” is the ship in general while “Twissy” is specific to Twelve/Missy. I use it myself just to organize my blog and make it easier to search for specifically stuff about the pair of them rather than go through every Doctor/Master post I’ve ever reblogged.

oh, I get why people might need to have individual names, I just don’t think most of them mash up well. and it’s also a pretty recent trend---there’s no Threlgado or Frispy or Sevainly or Robeights or Timm or anything. people used to just say, like, Five/Ainley, y’know?

Doctor Who Series 10 Playlist

So I make a lot of playlists as a hobby and, par for the course, I wound up making one for Series 10 of Doctor Who. I’m quite happy with how it turned out, so I’m sharing it here on the off-chance you’ll enjoy it as well!

In this playlist, the songs/events are organized chronologically (versus by episode order): it starts off at the execution planet scene in Extremis ( “See I’m Smiling”) and picks up later at the university with The Pilot and the introduction of Bill (”Dear Old Shiz”/ “See Her Smile”).  Along with the Twissy/Bill emotional arcs, it fills in some of the (*cough*vault-shaped*cough*) gaps.  It is long: but if you need something to listen to and feel like revisiting the story while you work/study/etc., hopefully this’ll do the trick!

It’s wonderful, as always, seeing new people get into my favorite ship. 😍 To clarify, “best enemies” has been around a long time. I don’t know when it started, but it predates my joining tumblr in 2009. It’s based on a quote from The Five Doctors. Unfortunately searching that tag was very difficult, so another user round about 2013 or so came up with Thoschei. I don’t want to drag them into this conversation without permission, so no tagging, but they still have that name in their URL.

We’ve had a lot of ship names over time for specific regenerations, and probably the only one that has complete agreement is Twissy. Traditionally it was the number of the Doctor and last name of the Master actor (I.e. threedelgado), but we’ve yet to settle on a name for ThirteenDhawan (spydoc, thirster). Let’s try to make something stick!

Okay so is best enemies the official 13/Dhawan!master ship name? I absolutely love it.

This ship name was used to Doctor/Master long before 13/Dhawan!Master came up. However, it was used by the Master in canon, so…

Also I like to call 13/Dhawan!Master “SpyDoc” and I will tag my posts like this later. ^^
