Hello sorry I am being shy and anon but do you have any advice for someone who wants to get into Doctor Who again after briefly dabbling (and enjoying it very much) in like the early, early 2010s? I know this is mostly your art blog but you were the only person I could think of to ask you're like the Doctor Who authority of blogs I follow

Oh yeah of course! People can be really confusing about this so I'll try not to be.

So first, the majority of doctor who episodes are self contained stories that you could just watch and understand perfectly without any further context. even when there is some overarching context it's usually written in a way that's either pretty easy to glean and/or just doesn't impact your understanding of the story. 99% of the episodes don't even care if you know the premise and are just like "what if some people were on a spaceship and the devil was there? wouldn't that be fucked up or what??". Don't feel like you have to binge a 60 years long show to watch it. Some standalone episodes I think are fun if you (or anyone else) just want to check out one or two:

The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances (A supposed-to-be-dead boy in a gas mask haunts a young woman in world war 2)

Blink (A woman gets wrapped up in a mystery involving statues that make people disappear. This one is especially good if you flat out know nothing about the show. Has some really great time travel stuff.)

A Christmas Carol (A christmas carol pastiche (of course) where the doctor tries to rewrite the past of a cruel man who's going to let a lot of people die. very sad and sweet. I love the "wintery planet with sky fish" setting of this one)

Vincent and the Doctor (The famous Vincent Van Gogh Episode™)

The Rings of Akhatan (A pretty lowkey little adventure story about an alien festival. has supreme autumn vibes)

Flatline (A species from a 2 dimensional world tries to break into our 3 dimensional one. really fun special effects)

Midnight (A tour bus breaks down on a diamond planet where nothing can survive. Something knocks at the door.)

Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (The Doctor and friend go to a library that covers an entire planet and finds that everyone has disappeared. Has a lot of really great, interesting concepts baked into it that I won't spoil)

It Takes You Away (A girl is left alone in a cabin in the woods when her dad disappears through the mirror. Has a famously goofy ending that I really love)

73 Yards (A character is steps on a fairy circle and is followed by an old woman who always stands exactly 73 yards away)

The Devil's Chord (This doesn't really have, you know, a plot, but it does have jinkx monsoon as an evil music god)

Boom (The doctor steps on a landmine on an alien planet and cannot move)

Wild Blue Yonder (A two hander where the Doctor and co are trapped on a dilapidated spaceship at the edge of the universe. really atmospheric with some fun/strange visuals.)

That being said, it does add a lot to watch it in order; there's a lot of plot twists, character dynamics, and general payoff you get if you marathon it. I would personally recommend starting with either the first episode of the 2005 show ("Rose") or the first episode of the 2010 season ("The Eleventh Hour") and just watching in order from there. I think you could also start with "The Snowmen", "The Pilot", or "The Woman Who Fell To Earth" if you wanted, but the first two (especially rose) are the better jumping on points.

some other little notes of advice I don't often see people mention:

it's stupid sometimes just roll with it

once in a while the show sort of "reboots" with different writers, actors, directors, and a new tone. it's much more like watching several small shows than one long show, so don't be too put off by the length!

IMPORTANT: pretty much all streaming services will separate holiday/anniversary specials from the show proper and you have to deliberately search them up on the same service to find them. It's really necessary to be aware of this because many of these specials are the first or last episodes for characters/whole eras of the show and are genuinely unskippable. I strongly recommend looking up a list of the episodes and checking it after finales just to make sure you don't skip anything on accident.

there's two spin offs (Torchwood, a more adult (read: gay sex) show about a mysterious agency that solves sci fi crimes, and the Sarah Jane Adventures, a pretty good monster of the week kids show) that ran concurrently with season 1-4. You don't have to watch them to understand anything happening in doctor who, but sometimes they cross over with the show in fun ways, Ex. the first season finale of Torchwood continues directly into season 3 of Doctor Who. My friend and I got a kick out of watching them at the same time so maybe you will too. (either way I recommend watching "Children of Earth", the torchwood miniseries, if you want to see a weird dark sci fi show about the government making contact with aliens. It's a bit like arrival (2016) if it was way nastier.)

I love how you made her style so rounded compared with the others. like. her hair, her cape, the skirt. she's there to goof around. have some fun. torment people a little.

I love how well you weaved in her usual dark red and yellow as accents! I'd been really struggling to make that work but here it gives her such a strong silhouette against the softer pinks and oranges. Makes her look fancy. almost regal.

Also I like how you gave her a skirt and... tights, I think they're called? Plus whatever the hell is going on with her golden shoes. Very lesbian gender of her along with the usual suit and cape leaning more masc. She's so great!!!!

2. god i love how built she is. square. the tie. the suit. the trousers. the suit. the hat. the boots (her with square boots omg). her badge and the cards!!! It's such a cool contrast from the left-most design!!

I love her trousers. Pinstripes make so much sense for her, and it fits her playing card palette perfectly!! Plus it really helps her silhouette from the hat and suit be so imposing!!

also god thank you for adding her holding that card. I can literally see the idle animation in which she holds that up and spins it around. so true. she would so fucking do that.

aghghg also I just. really appreciate how you use the same shade of purple as her shirt to shade her hair. It works SO perfectly in this palette and gives her like. such an ominous aura. such a good contrast against her closed eyes and little smile c:

and i'm SO glad you did. like. omg. omg. where do I start. omg.

THE HAIR IS IMMACULATE. LIKE WOW. FOR REAL.

I genuinely didn't think that mostly-purple design would work with red so well, which is why I confined it to the stars and her eye in my design. But GOD it looks so good here, and you've managed to turn those ornaments into like. Some sort of stylised nebula cloud.

The quality of the light around her upper hair looks so ethereal from the layering; you can't really tell what's physical and what's a glowing wisp of magic, and it kinda confuses your eyes as to like. What the depth of her hair is? Whether it's flat or has any volume, and whether that volume's opaque or transparent. I'm not entirely sure how to word it but it's such a neat trick on your eyes that's perfect for the vibe Fortuna's was going for.

I love how you've done the same thing at the very bottom of her cape as well, and how that trails off behind the other design and off the page. It makes her feel larger than life and like. Uncontainable. Plus I love how that one white cloud down on the left actually curves the robes up, again sort of playing with the volume, but also making the white fluffy bits look really cloudlike in comparison! Plus the fact the patterns sort of shrink back to normal cloth closer to the centre of her outfit is just 👌. It frames her height really well.

Even the normal clothes she has look amazingly elegant. All the shiny gold ornaments and ascot and purple against pure white look fantastically regal. I especially love the inside of her collar being shiny. It breaks up the purple really nicely and feels so so fancy as just like. a solid layer of gold there.

THEHALO OH MY GOD. SPIKY AND OMINOUS AND YOU KEPT THE RAINBOW MOTIF IN THE GLOWING BIT. THAT'S SO COOL. OH MY GOD

And GAH the fucking stars and sparkles everywhere. You've placed them so well so they don't feel overwhelming at all, despite the all details in the design. I love the variation in the size of them especially! And the fact you switch up their shapes and colours too - they really feel like star clusters rather than just a regular outfit motif. Plus that single one on her waste that's just hanging there freely. is that a belt or does she have it hanging there? i didn't even see the gold ones in her hair until now but god they really help with the shiny

Fantastic to see the custom equipment from backstage in a design! wow is it appropriate for this game ultimately based around fighting and conflict. Wow does it look so sharp and shiny and enchanted and cool. Wow is that appropriate for the levels of gay hostility going on here. wow does she look

also lastly. big fan of how she stands up slightly taller than the other two designs here. combined with you keeping her glaring down. that's just good toxic yuri moments 👍

I'm sooo happy my insanity regarding this design has come across and manifested itself in a totally new version in your brain. this is great.

Like for the original design. One thing I had in mind with her hair in particular was that this was her partially shifting to some sort of true form. Not entirely, so it wouldn't scare the crap out of the audience and be unwatchable with them going insane, but more than the regular to at least throw Jester off their tracks.

I don't know if that's what you were going for. But I can see that so much in your version of this design. It's so imposing and striking compared to her other designs. It's fantastic. ggggggg

⏴In the work, his chuunibyou sometimes causes problems for Kusuo, but in reality, he’s a good and timid child. He thinks of Kusuo, Nendou and Kuboyasu as important friends. Hopefully he’ll never lose this innocence.

Saiki Kusuo’s older brother, a genius mad scientist with an IQ of 218. Has a fetish for challenging his younger brother and getting defeated. He messes with Kusuo at any opportunity.

A logical and talkative transfer student who came to Kusuo’s class. He talks rapidly like a machine gun without reading the atmosphere of his surroundings. He suspects that Kusuo is a psychic. Although he was once deceived, he persistently continues to investigate Kusuo.

A high-school student who can control various psychic powers. In order to keep his abilities secret, he lives maintaining a moderate distance from those around him. His favorite food is sweets, he especially loves coffee jelly. 

⏶Although Kusuo almost never voluntarily expresses his emotions, he shows a blissful smile whilst tasting sweets. Is this cute contrast also a point that attracts people around him!?

⏶⏵In addition to Kaidou, other members of his troublesome group include the strongest idiot Nendou Riki (Voice Actor: Ono Daisuke and the delinquent Kuboyasu Aren (Voice Actor: Hosoya Yoshimasa), whose trouble-causing abilities are immeasurable. Despite that, they're also lovable guys that you can't hate.

—If you were to express the growth and changes of Saiki Kusuo in the second season using four-character idioms or similar expressions, what would they be?

Kamiya: 「Fierce Argument (Editor’s note: The sound of swords clashing violently. Also, the state of engaging in heated debate)」 I feel that the degree of this is gradually increasing compared to the 1st season.

–Kamiya-san, please tell us a particular「Kusuo’s charm point」 that you’d like to recommend right now.

Kamiya: I don’t know much about Kusuo, but anyway, Teruhashi-san’s cuteness is a big charm of this work. 

–Please tell us the episode or moment that made you laugh whilst portraying Kusuo.

Kamiya: Kusuo is usually cool and it’s hard to read his emotions, but sometimes during particularly intense situations, he strongly interjects with 「You idiot!」, which is fun for me too.

–Kusuo is always extremely popular regardless of gender, Kamiya-san, if you were in his position, what would you do?

Kamiya: If each of them stays with me with the awareness that we're friends, then I will gratefully accept that.

–If you were to express the growth and changes of Saiki Kusuo in the second season from a  chuunibyou perspective, what would that be?

Shimazaki: 「Jet Black Twilight - Ragnarok of Chaos」 Reason: it just sounds cool!

–Shimazaki-san, please tell us a particular 「Kaidou’s charm point」that you’d like to recommend right now.

Shimazaki: I find the contrast between Shun in his full-blown chuunibyou Jet-Black Wings mode and his natural self, who is a bit of a coward but is honest and caring about his friends, to be appealing.

–Shimazaki-sama, if you discovered a completely soaked Kaidou on a rainy day, what would you do?

Shimazaki: I’d protect him!!!

–Please tell us the episode or moment that made you laugh whilst portraying Kaidou.

Shimazaki: In the 2nd season, episode 4 of episode 8x, the loop episode 「Another Time Leap Challenge! I remember saying the same line over and over again like a broken record, it left a very strong impression on me. It was fun!

–Kaidou is still in full-blown chuunibyou mode, but Shimazaki-san, when were you the most chuunibyou-like in your life? 

Shimazaki: Right now. I seriously imagine using magic and saving the world every day.

To people of loved ones with poor memory:

It might be frustrating when they forget something (especially if it's important), but I can guarantee you that they are already beating themself up over having forgotten yet another thing. You don't need to rub that shame, embarrassment, and humiliation in deeper than it already is.

It is scary to forget things. It's humiliating to be told that the only reason we forget things is because we think nothing is important, that we're selfish and callous. Our brains are being pulled in every direction at the same time. It's impossible to keep track of this shit every picosecond of the day.

People like to conceptualize memory issues as a matter of lesser intelligence, that we're too stupid to even remember [minor detail]. I've noticed, though, that all of our brain power is kept toward other things - keeping ourselves alive, remembering a different thing, trying to regulate emotions or other disorders. Nobody seems to care that our workload is at least twice that of the "average" person's, I guess because they often don't directly notice it, or it doesn't directly affect them?

It's fine to be upset about the situation. You can't help that reaction, but you do not have to be cruel to people with memory issues, no matter the cause of it. Whatever they forgot might have been important to you, but there may be other things in that person's life that required their brainpower.

this is also not directed at anyone, but what i mentioned in the tags of one of my recent asks - i love love love hearing your ideas and hc's and theories in comments and asks!! however lately there have been a bunch of comments completely unrelated to tyt in the tyt comment section, or comments/asks that are outright telling me what should happen in tyt or phrasing song suggestions/opinions as if they are canon. some of these also vastly misinterpret some things i've said in the fic. and once again i do not mind if y'all want to switch out songs in your playlists, or come up with theories for how the fic is going to go, or even create alternate universes and canon divergences of the fic itself - but PLEASE do not tell me them as if i am now obligated to put them into the fic. this series has consumed me for years and i am very very attached to it and my plans for what will happen! and though i love hearing interpretations of apollo's backstory, or ideas for nico's fanbase, or song suggestions - i would greatly appreciate those to be phrased as what they are: suggestions, hc's, and theories. i am not a machine. i am not writing tyt for your sole entertainment. please do not request things from me as if i am.

A weird thing that helped me figure out how to draw horses (mostly the legs that I struggled with) was watching those horse shoeing videos on YouTube. There are tons of them, and often you'll find videos working on different breeds of horses so you get some different body types to look at as well

Headcanon.

When she's alone with Cedric, Sofia's mature facade slips, she's more childlike, more prone to showing vulnerability. She doesn't realise this, but Cedric just makes her feel like her guard can be let down, that nothing can touch her when she's with him and she can engage with being childlike again without judgement. Cedric notices the change in her personality when they're alone in his workshop versus when they're around other people.
