why was i like that (tl;dr in tags)
today i clicked on sgc's ig profile and saw that they use they/them pronouns now. and it makes me want to cry.
bc even tho we Literally went to high school together-ish (they were 3yrs after me?) we had such different experiences.
i was a Girl who hung out with guys who didn't respect me, went out with a boyfriend who was nice to me, and was too shy / awkward / busy being that shy nerd stereotype [1] that i had no "deep friendship". you could ask anyone anything about me and they wouldn't know the answer! and i wouldn't know anything about them!! [2] bc we were a small class (169) and everyone in town was a mix of neighbor and cousin, i got my invites to parties and dances, but i overall felt like i was on autopilot. i don't remember my life until i was ~16 [3]!! why!!!
i think a lot about how dr uju anya had a whole husband and child but over time realized she was a lesbian. not to parasocialize too much with this academic weapon, but i feel like i also had this experience (to a much smaller / younger degree). and i feel so sad thinking about how i could've saved so much pain in high school if i had just known i wasn't wired to like guys like that [4].
and i remember lindie [5], someone who's ~30 now and has been with her now-husband since she was ~13. one day we had a good phone call (post-hs-graduation) and she told me that for literally everyone else she could possibly see romantically / sexually, she's a lesbian. but she and her husband have literally Grown Up together. her love for him is something that goes beyond platonic / romantic / sexual attraction. it's a life partnership in every sense of the term.
this phone conversation lit a lightbulb in my summer 2019 brain. i knew that this high school bf of mine could be a life partner. we started dating when i was 11 or 12 and !!! we both saw each other grow up (at least to some degree). but something in the pit of my stomach told me i couldn't live a lie like that. it wouldn't be fair to him for me to have this self-discovery and just .. continue as if it didn't happen?
and so when someone said that dr. uju's pre-lesbian marriage was "sad" bc she didn't know she was a lesbian, i got (in my head) defensive. bc "it's totally possible to be happy and ignore this part of yourself!" (it's not).
for the longest time i told myself that being bisexual was the easiest sexuality to have bc i knew i liked women and i could always just end up with a guy to make my family happy, if i had to, ya know? i got mentally defensive when ppl online said that "invisibility is not a privilege" and "biphobia is real" bc i was subconsciously using this label as a way to hide the fact that the mere thought of a life with a man made me anxious / nauseous / scared.
and boy did that fear kick into overdrive anytime i was around a guy. if he even smiled at me, i'd go a little silly. it didn't even matter if he was straight, bi, ace, gay, or anything, i'd just latch onto the fact that it was a Man talking to me and i couldn't stop thinking about them and any comment they made that made them seem bored / annoyed at me made me spiral about my self-worth. but if there was ever a case that i Thought they even Maybe had an interest in me, i'd get nauseous again. to this day i feel like i still put guys up on a pedestal so i just have ... no guy friends [6].
this novel is a silly way of saying the following things.
the label "lesbian" is a vibe rn
heartstopper is a painful show for me to watch
sorry if ur a guy i met before i turned 20 that i was weird around : ( /nbh
sgc looks so happy. they're out and they look so happy. why couldn't that be me.
why was i like that.
---
[1] i had a goofy jock bf tho so was it really so bad?
[2] and to a certain degree this continues today? i don't know how to hold a conversation, i don't know how to ask questions, i don't have good memory of the conversations i Do manage to hold, my #1 fear is playing the newlyweds game with literally anybody. i once described making friends as 'learning a person's scripts / common conversation topics' and the other person in the room just kinda said 'haha yeah...' and i continued to pset :skull:
[3] and 16-17 was my sad era where i cried basically any time my bf and i were alone together. that man was so patient w me lmao
[4] why do i always say no? why can't i just calm down? why is it weird to describe us as 'friends but we also make out'?
[5] one of the coolest ppl i know. (death + suicide mentioned in this footnote) she was the french teacher that replaced my old french teacher after she died, and lindie really suffered for us. bc it was a catholic school, she was forced to cover up her tattoos, and she had to wear longer clothes (admin always told her to cover up even when she was wearing Long Clothes). she went through so much (miscarriage, lost here sense of self, etc.) and was literally suicidal but she still showed up for us. one of my fav teachers and an inspiration to this day.
[6] except for the two dudes (that might be) reading this, y'all are cool and literally the best. afaik i've been Normal around y'all so yay! growth!!

˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ Guide To Tone Tags ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tone tags are little indicators people put at the end of a sentence or message to clarify the intent or feelings of that message ^-^ you’ve probably seen them before. They’re really helpful especially online because it can be difficult to tell the tone of something online through text, especially if you don’t know the person and their usual speaking habits.
Just as a note: please don’t use these ironically. It defeats the purpose of tone tags and can be very confusing for some people! Just leave the tone tag out if you’re being sarcastic about it.
Tumblr media
♡ General Tone ♡
• /j - Joking - this message isn’t serious, it’s a joke.
• /hj - Half Joking - they are joking about something but they are also likely to do it or believe what they are saying. It’s a joke and it’s not serious, but there is a little bit of truth in it. (Usually this is in the form of exaggeration i.e. “I hate twitter/hj” means they don’t really hate twitter, they do dislike some aspects of it though)
• /s or /sarc - Sarcastic - they’re saying something that is opposite of what they actually mean or feel. (Sarcasm online is also represented a lot by using long words and random capitalization i.e. “I nEvEr Would HaVe KnoOoooooOOOWnnN” they mean this sarcastically - they knew).
• /srs - Serious - they really mean what they are saying, or what they’re saying is very important to them.
• /nsrs - Not Serious - they do not mean what they are saying or what they’re saying isn’t a big deal.
• /lh - Lighthearted - they don’t mean this too seriously, it’s for fun or generally well intentioned.
• /g or /gen - Genuine - what they are saying or offering is for real, they mean what they are saying sincerely, or they are actually asking for responses for a question - it’s not rhetorical.
• /nf - Not Forced - they’re asking for something but they’re not trying to pressure you or force you into doing it.
• /m -Metaphorically - what they’re saying isn’t literal or didn’t literally happen, they’re using this as a metaphor for a different situation.
• /li - Literally - the thing they are talking about actually for real happened or they believe it fully.
• /rt or /rh - Rhetorical Question - a question they don’t necessarily want responses to, it’s a statement posed as a question to make you think about the topic as opposed to actually asking for an answer.
• /hyp - Hyperbole - what they’re saying is extremely exaggerated for comedic effect or to stress something.
• /ex - Exaggeration - what they’re saying is somewhat exaggerated for comedic effect or to stress something.
• /pos - Positive - they mean this in a good way.
• /neg - Negative - they mean this in a bad way.
• /neu - Neutral - they don’t really have strong feelings on this or don’t really have an opinion on it.
Tumblr media
♡ Feelings of the Author ♡
• /nm - Not Mad - they’re not mad about what they’re talking about
• /lu - A Little Upset - they’re a bit disappointed or sad or angry about what they’re talking about, but not too much.
• /p - Platonic - they mean this in a friendly way, they view you as a friend.
• /r - Romantic - they mean this in a romantic way, they view you as a love interest, crush, or partner.
Tumblr media
♡ Intent of Message ♡
• /t - Teasing - they’re kidding around and teasing you, it’s not too serious.
• /th - Threat - this is an actual threat that they intent on following through with (I mostly see this one used ironically which irks me bc it defeats the entire purpose of using a tone tag so just be aware of that).
• /sx or /x - Sexual Intent - they mean this in a flirtatious and sexual way.
• /nsx or /ns - Non-Sexual Intent - they do not mean this in a sexual way, it’s more so platonic, joking, or lighthearted.
• /nbr - Not Being Rude - they’re not trying to be rude by saying this (note that this does not automatically mean what they’re saying is not rude, you can still be rude even if it’s not your intention to be).
Tumblr media
♡ Who is Being Talked To or About ♡
• /nbh - Nobody Here - they’re not talking about anyone here (usually used in group chats or small communities).
• /nsb - Not Subtweeting - they’re not saying this as a vague response to anything or anyone, they’re just genuinely talking about it.
• /nay - Not At You - they’re not aiming what they’re talking about at you specifically.
• /ay - At You - they are specifically targeting what they’re saying for you.
Tumblr media
♡ Where is This From / Miscellaneous ♡
• /ij - Inside Joke - it’s a joke but might only be understood by a small group of people. Don’t stress if you don’t get it or don’t understand what they’re talking about. Inside jokes are usually hard to explain to others.
• /ref - Reference - this is a reference to something else, usually a meme or piece of media.
• /ot - Off Topic - this is unrelated to what was being talked about before.
• /cb - Clickbait - usually this means the message is exaggerated or falsely advertised to get your attention. Often used in a lighthearted / joking manner.
• /f - Fake - the thing they’re tagging is not real. This is usually used for fake headlines or photos.
• /l or /ly - Lyrics - they’re reciting the lyrics of a song.
• /c -Copypasta - this is a copypasta, they copied it from somewhere else.

Note
I got a small question so if you may, please answer Jace.
What are tone tags?
AH! Sorry! I guess it didn't occur to me that some wouldn't know what tone tags were. Here's a full guide from this site!
what is tone? tone is what a phrase or statement means or comes across as despite what it's actually saying. examples of tone could be serious, joking, lighthearted, etc.
what are tone tags? tone tags / tone indicators are things you can include with text to indicate what the tone of it is.
why are they used? some people have difficulty picking up on tone. communicating through text only makes this harder due to lack of audio and physical clues (voice inflection, body language, facial expressions, etc.) tagging what tone you are using can be very helpful for others understanding of what you're saying, clarification, avoiding miscommunications, etc.
when/where should they be used? they can be used any time or place you may be communicating through text. do not mock the use of tone tags. you may not need them but some people do. not everyone can tell when something is a joke, etc. just be nice about it.
MASTERLIST:
/j = joking /hj = half joking /s or /sarc = sarcastic / sarcasm /srs = serious /nsrs = not serious /lh = light hearted /g or /gen = genuine / genuine question /ij = inside joke /ref = reference /t = teasing /nm = not mad /lu = a little upset /nf = not forced /nbh = nobody here /nsb = not subtweeting /nay = not at you /ay = at you /nbr = not being rude /ot = off topic /th = threat /cb = clickbait /f = fake /q = quote /l or /ly = lyrics /c = copypasta /m = metaphor / metaphorically /li = literal / literally /rt or /rh = rhetorical question /hyp = hyperbole /ex = exaggeration /p = platonic /r = romantic /a = alterous /sx or /x = sexual intent /nsx or /ns = non-sexual intent /pc or /pos = positive connotation /nc or /neg = negative connotation /neu = neutral / neutral connotation

Note
I was wondering if you could please tell me what tone tags are?
yes, of course! tone tags are used as a virtual replacement for body language and tone of voice. they’re very popular among autistic people since we often have a hard time identifying sarcasm for example.
here’s a graphic i found that has the ones i use, plus some more slightly less common ones:
Tumblr media

/j = joking
/hj = half joking

shoutout to tone tags for being a step to move towards more internet accessibility but when misused they just make a message more confusing like once i saw someone say “i tried to do a crazier pose for this drawing /nbh” and i was so taken aback by the out of place tone tag i spent the next ten minutes trying to figure out what the hell that meant
if you’re gonna say “man i really want a sandwich rn” and then slap on a tone tag like /not mad or /nobody here id be like WHAT??? what does that imply??? are you assuming that i think you’re mad by wanting a sandwich???? are you trying not to vague someone by wanting a sandwich??? What?????

Tone Tags Masterlist
PT: Tone Tags Masterlist /end PT
Tone tag/Tone Indicators: symbols attached to a content to explicitly state the intonation/intent of it, especially when it may be otherwise ambiguous. Tone tags are used to explicitly state the author's intent, instead of leaving the content up to interpretation.
Tone tags may be placed at the end of a message, taking the form of a forward slash followed by an abbreviation of a relevant words. Alternatively, a more detailed textual description (ex: /friendly, caring about your well-being) may be used.
For example, /srs may be attached to the end of a message to indicate that the message is meant to be interpreted in a serious manner, as opposed to, for example, being a joke (which is commonly represented as /j).
Source: Wikipedia (link).
Prefix of tone tags: /h-: half of an emotion or intention. For example, /hsrs means half serious. /l-: a little bit of an emotion or intention. For example, /lm would mean a little mad. /s-: slightly something. For example, /sann would mean slightly annoyed. /v-: very much of an emotion or intention. For example, /vpos means very positive.
