Tone tags are little indicators people put at the end of a sentence or message to clarify the intent or feelings of that message ^-^ you’ve probably seen them before. They’re really helpful especially online because it can be difficult to tell the tone of something online through text, especially if you don’t know the person and their usual speaking habits.

Just as a note: please don’t use these ironically. It defeats the purpose of tone tags and can be very confusing for some people! Just leave the tone tag out if you’re being sarcastic about it.

• /j - Joking - this message isn’t serious, it’s a joke.

• /hj - Half Joking - they are joking about something but they are also likely to do it or believe what they are saying. It’s a joke and it’s not serious, but there is a little bit of truth in it. (Usually this is in the form of exaggeration i.e. “I hate twitter/hj” means they don’t really hate twitter, they do dislike some aspects of it though)

• /s or /sarc - Sarcastic - they’re saying something that is opposite of what they actually mean or feel. (Sarcasm online is also represented a lot by using long words and random capitalization i.e. “I nEvEr Would HaVe KnoOoooooOOOWnnN” they mean this sarcastically - they knew).

• /srs - Serious - they really mean what they are saying, or what they’re saying is very important to them.

• /nsrs - Not Serious - they do not mean what they are saying or what they’re saying isn’t a big deal.

what is tone? tone is what a phrase or statement means or comes across as despite what it's actually saying. examples of tone could be serious, joking, lighthearted, etc.

what are tone tags? tone tags / tone indicators are things you can include with text to indicate what the tone of it is.

why are they used? some people have difficulty picking up on tone. communicating through text only makes this harder due to lack of audio and physical clues (voice inflection, body language, facial expressions, etc.) tagging what tone you are using can be very helpful for others understanding of what you're saying, clarification, avoiding miscommunications, etc.

when/where should they be used? they can be used any time or place you may be communicating through text. do not mock the use of tone tags. you may not need them but some people do. not everyone can tell when something is a joke, etc. just be nice about it.

There are quite a few (we have a whole channel dedicated to them for reference purposes) but I’ll just list some of the ones I find most useful and/or use most often. All examples shown here are real messages from the server.

/flr (for legal reasons, as in "for legal reasons this is a joke.")

basically an extension of /j but more specifically used when talking about activities that are illegal, insinuate the desire to cause harm to self/others, or just generally could get someone in trouble if taken seriously.

Example: "if one of those silly ass motherfuckers says 'boys will be boys' I will personally give them bottom surgery with vintage lawn shears /flr"

/jbnr (joking but not really)

for when things are said in a joking tone but the sentiment is still true, or when the statement is hyperbolic. similar to /hj but somewhat less vague

Example: "i live off of mountain dew and spite /jbnr"

/citation needed (like the wikipedia tag)

for when the statement may or may not be true, but the author doesn't have the time and/or energy to verify, so be skeptical in case it is incorrect. can be used in place of qualifiers like "iirc," "I'm not sure though," or "but don't take my word for it"

Example: "Isn’t Disney like, the fourth greatest supply of explosives in the world? /citation needed"

/lies

for when the statement is untrue. usually used for comedic effect. similar to /j (joking) but specifically for lies. can also be used when a statement was not intended as a lie, but ended up not being true after all.

any misspellings or incorrect grammar in this statement are intentional, not typos.

Fun little guide to tone indicators, since I keep seeing massive lists no one can remember. Here's some of the most common ones I actually see day to day, though you should look at the others. /j - Joking

/hj - Half joking

/srs - Serious, not joking at all

/nbh - nobody here (Mainly chat groups) It can be used for when you want to rant about someone in a server/group but you don't want people thinking you're complaining about them.

/p - Platonic, like "I love you /p" to your friend

/r - Romantic, though it's used less since not including the P automatically IMPLIES it.

/pos - positive!

/neg - Negative

/nm - Not mad, very important

/lh - lighthearted, like when you're giving your friend a little jab but you don't mean it

There can be many more indicators, but some are just far too specific and can make remembering important ones harder.

I mean, yeah, there's lots of stuff about human conversation that isn't joking or serious, but not everything needs a tone indicator. like, we also have, like, verbs, but we don't go around typing out "I'm running /vrb".

my point is tone indicators are not meant to be constant and omnipresent, they have specific use cases, and their specific use cases are when they are specifically meant to clear up ambiguous situations with a specificity that would be resolved with tone in speech*... but saying "/hj" doesn't actually clear up anything.

saying /gen specifically makes it clear that the statement is entirely genuine. "I love your art /gen" means that you really do love the art.

saying /j specifically makes it clear that the statement is entirely a joke. "I'm gonna kill a man /j" means you are not going to kill a man and are just using joking about it.

saying /s specifically makes it clear that the statement is entirely sarcastic. "batman is totally the best hero ever /s" means that you do not believe that batman is the best hero ever, and, specifically, that you are making fun of people who do.

there's even what I consider to be a much better version of /hj, which is /lh, or "lighthearted", which means specifically "this isn't a joke per se, but it's not meant to be heavy". "you misspelled that word /lh" means that you misspelled the word but it's not a big deal and you don't need to, like, stress about it.

but like... what, exactly, does /hj mean? it means "half-joking", but that's not not specific and it's not clear, and tone indicators are meant to be specific and clear, because that's the entire point.

if I say "batman is totally the best hero ever /hj" then what specifically does that mean? whatever it means, I'm gonna have to elaborate, and if I'm gonna have to elaborate anyway, then the tone indicator is totally useless.
