Sora was following after Phoenix, after having spent the night at the Fire Station with him and Dahlia. He had his hands stuffed in his pockets and was gnawing nervously at his lower lip. The run down he'd been given had been enough to almost send him into a panic attack, thankfully he had his medication in his bag at the time. Phoenix had gone with him on his motorcycle come morning, proving there was no way out which had almost sent him into another panic.

Now here they were, having spent the night explaining who he was and why he was in town. Phoenix cleared his throat making Sora glance at him before the man nodded with his head at an office door with the label Dr.Romero-Walker on it. Swallowing he managed a smile for Phoenix, who gave him an encouraging one back. Walking in he gave a nervous wave to Hawk, "Uh...hi. I'm uh...I'm Sora...um, Mrs. Cruz-Dutton said she called ahead to let you know I was coming?" He doesn't think she mentioned why, but that was partially because Sora wanted to tell him himself. "Uh so...this might be kind of crazy...but um. So my mom said my bio dad's name is Hawk Romero...so unless there's another one in the family, I guess that means it's you. So, uh hi?"

Ines doesn't know anything about Earth's big historical moments or landmarks. Schools in The Wards just don't teach that. So when she's asked where she wants to visit, she's scrolling for the first thing to jump out at her. And then she sees it. Ding Dong, Texas. She snorts so loud that the people in line shuffle impatiently, making her clear her throat. It's probably just gonna be you in this server, and some AI. That okay?"Perfect, yeah." she had said, still laughing and not surprised no one else is dying to visit Ding Dong.

This is a once in a lifetime thing for Ines. She knows she'll never afford the experience ever again, so it might as well be the most hilarious place name she's ever heard. After downing her nutripack, Ines 'arrives' in Ding Dong, still giggling as the world around her shifts and blurs into focus. It's disorientating for a second, like her brain can't catch up to so many sensations at once. She glances at her hands, half expecting her to be what glitches, not the scenery.

But, she's on a mission: find the sign. There's no way she's leaving without taking a picture in front of the "Welcome to Ding Dong" sign. Except, when she gets there, it's half-loaded, flickering in and out like it's buffering. Or, having a seizure. She sighs, comms in hand, hoping she can time it perfectly for the shot. But, just as she gets into place, the sign disappears again, allowing her to see someone approaching from the other side in her screen. "Holy shit." Ines jumps slightly, spinning around and squinting.

At first, she thinks it's AI and she's suddenly curious about interacting with the human-like intelligence when it's...a human. But as they approach closer to one another, Ines's stomach does a somersault. Jakob Ranstrom, of all places, has picked Ding Dong. "Oh." it's not disappointment, more like awkward surprise. Her cheeks flush as she tries to push away the...very vivid thoughts, the reasons why she's been avoiding him. "I thought you were AI. That's hilarious." Ines chuckles, squinting at him again. "Wait, are you AI? Like...not normally, I mean right now." things were a little too real to be AI the last time they saw one another. "Is this an AI you?" her hand lifts up, giving a pat to his face, and then retracts as she feels ultra realistic skin under her palm. "Oh shit, no, that's you. Hi. Hey, or er...Howdy. The sign's broken."

rrrrrrrrr im so frustrated with my writing. its just been weeks of struggle and whyyyy. idk i think i need to rework or rethink what im going for with this one or something, its like i can feel the threads of the themes i wanna do are sooo close to tying together but it just isnt quite reaching yet and so it reads like a stilted bland mess but the more i stare at it the further away it feels aaah

i know it can get there i kNOW it can, the ending and like aha moment is so cleaaaar that i think its almost too solid and thats why my beginning feels so fucked—like i just keep asking myself 'well if hes gonna get there in chapter 5, whats stopping him from getting there now in chapter 2??' i tHOUGHT i had reasons but now that im there i just keep instinctually writing him to have the connecting/realization moment anyway and like. if that's how it is then what even IS the story??? i need a break

I dont know if its just me but for some reason it takes me more than an hour to set up my scenes (sometimes longer) haha! Honestly majority of that time goes to finding the right pose with the right expression to match the scene. Adding to that, I have to dress the everyone and find or make the right lot which also takes a while because I'm so picky (Also sometimes my game would crash in the middle of setting up and so I have to start over lmao)

Yes! I have a save file specifically for the gameplays I post and share (ex. Diana and Aiden story line) I don't really play with them unless Im posting on tumblr. I have a separate save file for when I actually want to play the sims (different OC's and all)

Ts4 Poses is super helpful for when you're looking for poses. Checkout their masterlist page, it nicely sorted and easy to navigate! Also check out other simblrs who post gameplay! I find myself being inspired when I see my mutuals posts!

so this post got me spiralling into detective mode again and yes i know douglas suggesting it might have been war/pollution but i have certified trust issues™ and i dont believe that for one darn second

i also don't think it's a kiss. lemme explain horrifically

so i took another look at the two frames we have of The Leaked Smooch™ and the background has a lot to be desired (if you take into account that the boys are taking up most of the frame (duh), plus already fairly average quality video PLUS compression from when i captured it)

but i think we can safely rule out that The Leaked Smooch™ doesn't happen in the theatre here, mainly because even though the quality is bad, the glasses in the Smooch™ are crowley's modern ones, not the ones we saw him wear in the 1941 flashback in s1, plus his hair is differently styled... so yes can pretty confidently say this is not the kiss we are looking for

so i wanted to pinpoint what era the theatre bit is actually set in, and therefore i set about identifying the theatre in question. turns out kids that im not a good researcher (despite it literally being my job) so it took FUCKING AGES but i eventually found set photos of the boys entering a theatre, specifically the hippodrome in bo'ness:

now this was a turn-up for the books, because that's crowley's 1941 costume right??? id recognise that iconic fit anywhere. az's costume is trickier to pinpoint bc he wears the same damn thing but pretty sure this is a match to the church scene:

so we know from s1 that we have the church scene yada yada, and crowley offers aziraphale a lift home... which we know he accepts given that the s2 trailer gives us the ✨Dinner of '41✨ scene:

the other bit however to this puzzle is that there ALSO a set pic of aziraphale at the hippodrome in his magician's outfit. given the frame from the trailer where he looks like he's about to brick it going on stage, surrounded by lovely burlesque girlies and dame si��n phillips in period dress, AND there were extras on the set dressed in ww2-type army uniforms, so i think it can be fairly surmised that this bit also occurs in the 40s

so my thought process is that we're getting two separate scenes (kinda) from the 40s, we have the church bit from s1 plus the Dinner of '41 scene as its own entity, but then, like

aziraphale is doing his magic act as a side hustle to this burlesque show? and crowley turns up to watch him, hiding out up in the box?

if we follow this completely made up narrative ive just come up with, aziraphale, im assuming, finishes up and gets changed into his normal clothes, and then goes up to this box to meet crowley?

to this end, i captured and slowed down the bit in the opening sequence where aziraphale and crowley (sorry douglas, not buying it) are in the box... and-

now to my eye, the motion of them in the clip looks like they are dancing? i don't have the source to hand but we've had it confirmed that a choreographer was brought into s2, not impossible az would go up to meet crowley after his magic act, whilst there's still something going on on the stage, and the two end up dancing or something? and az bless his heart gets spooked from that?

im reasonably convinced that this might be the origin of the 'you go too fast for me' line - something happens and ultimately aziraphale gets spooked given that he's only just realised he has Feelings for crowley, and so my boy fucking legs it (a lil post i made a while ago about this exact scenario if you'd care to peruse)

other thing to note:

there is a figure that is lurking behind aziraphale and crowley in the box, which looks like it moves specifically in sync with crowley, so it could be a shadow, or someone/thing is in the box that they aren't aware of 👀 so maybe this thing (?) witnesses it all? whatever went down in the box?

so in my addled feral mind, ive come up with a speculation that even as im breathing life into it sounds unhinged and so implausible it's hilarious -

i put to you, members of the jury, that something was meant to happen in that box, and it didn't... that something being that crowley makes a move of some kind - kiss, dance, hug, declaration, WHATEVER - and aziraphale was meant to accept it/reciprocate/idk, but didn't.

and that fucks with the plan, and for lack of better terminology creates a nexus event (lmao thanks loki) which in turns starts screwing with other events, somewhat like i theorised in this post here tehe

are aziraphale and crowley, essentially, the earth's endgame? idk about u but ive read enough angst fics to know that it's not inconceivable that crowley and aziraphale's mere existence may have been part of god's plan to represent free will on earth, defend humankind, and give balance and meaning to it

so what would happen if aziraphale essentially rejected that? did the most human thing possible and resisted the plan? idk i feel at this point i am just writing a fic and this will all be ludicrously incorrect bUT half the fun is torturing yourself over your own theories right 🙃

Helloooo!!! I was looking for inspo for my own visual novel a little while back, it's set in a ballroom so eventually the keywords lead me to discovering save the last dance (and itch.io in general im a total noob to this lmao) i dont know what it was but it just like took a vice grip around me INSTANTLYY.

So I downloaded the main game today and I am actually silently cursing you because I got nothing done all day I was just like transfixed. The artstyle grew on me alot, and oh godd the character designs... God I love the designs, espcially Genzhou's. There's just so much love (even in every gruesome death scene lol) put into this it's almost difficult not to get obssesed...

Also sidenote I found it kind of encouraging almost to see that you're (self-proclaimed) older, I found that really inspirational lol. There's something that just makes me want to create and actually sit down and learn when I play your games. I guess I've always had this feeling of having all the time in the world but recently I've been feeling almost like it's too late to learn new skills (which is kind if ridicolius since I'm like smack dab in the middle of gen z). Regardless I guess your work made me realize the artistry in visual novels, I could keep going but I tend to ramble lol

and i'm even more touched that you've been enjoying the main game so much 😭💕💕💕 especially all the kind words about the art!! i've grown more confident in my art more recently but especially in the beginning stages of the game i was incredibly self-conscious and worried about it because it was rather odd-looking and didn't match any other typical VN styles. so that's really sweet of you to say. this game certainly has had a lot of love put into it (and blood, sweat, tears, my entire life... etc.). it is very much a big passion project and my eyes were perhaps too big when i got started, but because it dug itself so deep into my psyche and i also made some good decisions like releasing in parts, etc., i've been able to keep working on it until the end despite it taking me like 2.5+ years so far. i'm not even sure i can put into words what this game and chars have done for me and my life and the many journeys and discoveries i've made along the way

dkjfalsdkf yes... i am a millenial, i will say that much. though i don't often feel like one. except for the fact that i often have no idea what people are talking about or referencing and tend to be awkward and confused most of the time LOL this is also why my characters are all older, as well. i sometimes feel a bit strange since i feel much older than many of the others in the VN dev sphere (well, perhaps in age only, not really in mental maturity maybe LKDJAFLKDS). if this can give inspiration to others that are also a bit older though, then i am glad 🤣 i have spent much of my life going from thing to thing and never really knowing exactly what i want to do. case in point my current job has nothing to do with my master's degree. though the one constant has always been creation of some kind, whether it's drawing or writing (and now with games, doing both of those on top of scripting and coding and a bajillion other things lol). i don't think you should ever feel "too old" to do something. or to get started doing something. or to feel like you "haven't done enough" etc. i say this so strongly because i also try to reassure myself sometimes perhaps LOL it's also ok if you don't know what you want to do so you're just trying out different ideas that you're passionate about. so many of us just wanna find something that makes us feel fulfilled and passionate, that makes our hearts ache, that fills us with joy and motivation. so if you can find something that does that for you, no matter how old you are, grab it and don't ever let go lkdajfalskd

hello! could i possibly get a idv matchup?

I go by all pronouns (i just default to they/them), im pansexual with innattentive ADHD (aka ADD) and an anxiety disorder. My MBTI type is INTP-T, and I'm a scorpio - rising taurus. I'm very outgoing and funny with my friend group, however i get anxious and very quiet if im in public without someone else i know being there. i've been told im a perfectonist and that i set high standards for myself, when i dont meet those standards i tend to break down. i have a hard time asking for help in general and tend to bottle up how i feel which has cause people to get angry at me because i do not know how describe how im feeling. i have been told i'm very observant and tend to notice little things in stuff like movie scenes.

im very pale with a lot of freckles everywhere with a curly dark brown wolf cut. i tend to bruise and scratch myself easily as well. i speak english, german, and spanish (english is my mother tongue) !!

my aesthetics in terms of clothing range from 90's-ish to cybercore…. although my usual fit will have silver jewelry. i like going out from time to time to shop or picking up food from local food shops!! on terms of food, i have fast metabolism so im hungry for most of the day…my favorite kind of food is texas bbq!!! I love to cook and read a lot so i tend to stay up late doing just that lmao

you don’t have to create a onceler to join either of those! there’s plenty of ocs (deloraxed or not) that are in both of them :3

but if you rly wanna do a onceler, i think it’s okay if your gimmick matches an existing onceler, especially if the blog is no longer active. like how many oncelers themed around being monsters or curses do u think exist?? so many. countless, but they're all kewl bc what matters is how you approach the character and give it your own twist! unless it’s something super specific, i don’t think anyone would mind if another idk retail onceler existed for example (thinking of retail bc i’m at work rn abloo bloo)

if this is your first time joining, i'd definitely try to pick something you're passionate about as a theme or set of personality traits! it'll keep you going and strong at the start of it all before the ball officially gets rolling.

also idk if you plan to do art or not but dont be discouraged if you dont! or if you dont think your art "is good enough"!!! some of the biggest oncelers in the fandom (swag and gent are the immediate first to come to mind) had mods who didnt draw for their posts and they still were well received! what matters is how much the concept means to YOU and how much passion you put into it. and ultimately: what matters most is if you have fun with it! :3

also, put yourself out there! approach people with ideas or whathaveyou. test the waters to see where the chemistry lies and if those characters' mods would wanna plot w you! or even just do one-shots to see have some fun/see where things go. the worst favor u can do urself is to sit there and like...stew in fomo and let shyness/fear/whatever hold you back. and if you dont have ideas or dont get any hits back, focus on your own plot for awhile, let ppl see your character in action, it might spur some inspo

2. What I like most and least about it. OH BOY this one oughta be FUN i'm not the best with favorites so I'll just mention a few of the many bits of it that i like. The ost is very good and i love it very much. it's empowering and solemn and joyous and AAAAA. some favorite tracks: (journey, temptation, excerpt from the union, insurrection, pathfinder, and at peace)

the enviroments <3 <3 I mean come on you can't ask me to NOT say something about the settings in this game, they're awesome!! personal favorite has to be the dreaming city, but there's a ton of cool stuff on other words too! the throne world with it's creepy overgrown atmosphere, europa with its desolate icescapes, the edz in all it's greenery coated post apocalyptic glory. sometimes i just go places without any objective and wander around looking at stuff. it's nice. lightbearers as a concept i love these funky lil amnesic space dudes they make my brain go erbrbrbrbrbrbrbr *cut to me rotating my ocs around in my mind like spaghetti in the microwave* least favorite

im sorry im just a general pvp disliker. Like in any game, not just d2. I usually play it for the armor/shaders, but beyond that? i will never pick pvp over pve. I don't enjoy getting tbagged, abandoned mid-match by the rest of my team, or steamrolled. (and yet i endured all of these for the trials armorsets. fashion truly is endgame lmao.) anyways, gambit and team scorched are the only fun pvp modes and that is a hill i will die on. (im lying i dont care that much)

A ship that makes me want to look into the camera like I'm on The Office already gave a pretty comprehensive explanation of my feelings regarding ships in the last ask i answered so but tldr: most (not all) ships can be either bad or good, depending on how and why the characters are shipped. and yeah there's never been a single reasonable parent between mine and my husband's parents lmao while his dont care about arguing in front of strangers as long as the scene looks like they're the victims, mine have always strived to appear perfect in front of strangers. i met my in laws a couple of months after we started dating, i was invited over for dinner, and my mil had no problem starting a screaming match about some local politician's election promises. on the other hand, i met my best friend over a decade ago, when her family moved to the apartment next door to my family's. the building is structured in a way where we shared a single wall across half of the rooms, e.g. my and her bedrooms were separated by a single wall, and if we felt like hanging out, we'd knock on that wall to let the other one know lol her family never knew about a single raised voice or argument or anything in my family despite those things happening regularly, because all those things happened in the room that was most remote from all other neighbors, so that my parents could continue presenting a pristine image to the rest of the world. now both sets of parents are irritated with us because we never have arguments, since we're able to sort out any misunderstanding calmly and quietly - no malice, vengeance, or ego - because we both understand how bad they are from growing up in a similar way. we both saw one of those "its not you vs me, it's us against the problem" quotes and took it to heart lmaoo

funny story, i feel like fate or the universe was involved in us meeting because it turned out we'd been orbiting each other's lives and friend groups the entire time before we first saw each other, which is kinda weird. like both of us being at the same time and place, but never seeing each other. ive seen pictures of us at the same parties in bars, separated by a table or two. or even just hanging out with friends, my friends had a preferred bench at a local park, turned out so did his, and it was literally the one 30ft away at the same park. we knew each other's friends but never actually saw one another so we could meet until we were in our 20s lmao the universe kept saying "not yet" till we grew up 😂 quite literally, my other best friend knew him personally but i never even saw him until years later lmao

anyway, a day after the whole shitstorm argument, and we have my mil twisting everything to fit her worldview. for example she claims she never called me a piece of shit, she was actually calling my husband that, despite me literally quoting when and how it happened, it's being turned into me "misremembering" despite it happening multiple times, but i only quoted one situation, but its fine because that's what narcissists do lmao

I have more story ideas than I'll ever be able to write or even list so I'll use this as an excuse to talk about my novel and maybe EE since they've been rattling around inside my brain (sorry, I know it's not necessarily fandom-y)

I was about to start going off about my novel but realised asdflkgjs I never really talk about it on here and only ever vaguely allude to it!! ig to preface it's sci-fi neon-noir murder mystery set around street racing in a city where street racing is everything and the racers are basically idols, with the private investigator on the case and the top racer the star-crossed lovers of the story, it's meant to be very over the top and draws a lot on shakespeare, there's still a not insignificant part of me that wants to go back through and rewrite all of the main racer's dialogue to match the meter the fairies in A Midsummer Night's Dream are written in (iambic/trochaic tetrameter) given that's sort of her vibe but!!! that also is very much tempered by wanting it to be palatable to people who aren't me

(my novel is one of those things where like it's something so specifically tailored to me and my interests that I can't fathom other people being interested in it but I also love it so much and can never shut up about it asdfghkl)

Despite that, I'm currently writing (*trying to write) Eternity's Embrace because while I reworked uhhh almost the entire ending and it's still not fully fleshed out I do at least have the next chunk planned and able to be worked on. I'm getting to the pre-wedding dinner between the humans and the asari and I always look forward to writing big group scenes with lots of characters and dialogue, it's just a matter of being able to focus and write it which is! admittedly hard when I'm in this state and when the ending is still in disarray (I do not know what readers want the ending to look like for it to be satisfying for them and not just self indulgent for me)

I rly loved the school trip episode!!! her coworker is still so set on trying to match her with mr lee skdjsk shes winning the wingman points but not the 'keeping up with the news' points (and also the cotton candy scene. What if i passed away. What if i straight up died. what then)

polyphemus

so the entire stage will be the interior of the cave, with i think the entrance being stage left. it could be flipped though, doesn’t matter. i want lots of rocks, dim lights, some red lighting and accents to match the album cover. i want a staircase somewhere on the left, but covered in rocks obviously so it’s just a natural ledge in the cave, and some rocks that are big and sturdy enough to jump up on. those will come back in a later scene as well! recycling <3

much like the boar it will be difficult to do a lot of sheep, especially since they will very quickly get in the way of the fighting, so the compromise i worked out after some brainstorming with a friend was to do like 3 visible sheep, and have a rock wall placed downstage right to kind of imply that the cave continues much deeper than the audience can see. and the soldiers can act like they see more sheep back there. woo

as for polyphemus….the wheeled set piece is BACK baby, put him on a rolling platform. giant cyclops head that the actor playing him can puppet, and a mix of crew and ensemble not in the scene can move the platform and puppet his big arms and the giant club later on. the only downside is that you can’t really tip over the whole thing to have him collapse, but luckily next to the entrance theres a convenient staircase/rock wall situation for him to sort of slump against!

i don’t have anything too special to say about most of the fight. you’ll have to be careful about where soldiers “die” because polyphemus is gonna need a lot of space to move in, but like, that’s not too hard

oh, but i think polities and odysseus should start out fighting side by side and get separated, leaving odysseus too far away to help him when he dies. drama. originally i thought odysseus could be up on the stair/ledge for that, which gives him a good high position to yell out orders, but i also like putting him on the ground amongst his men. could go either way

i also think it would be fun to do a slo-mo thing for the end where polyphemus starts singing, after polities is dead, while odysseus is having his thousand yard stare moment

remember them

even though odysseus says the best thing they can do for their fallen friends is to remember them, i definitely want to see some attempt at funeral rites being done. i looked up ancient greek burial practices, and didn’t really get much that was useful, but i DO remember reading antigone in high school and her “symbolic burial” of her brother, which was just funeral rites and a dusting of soil. that’s totally feasible for them to do during the first part of this song! especially odysseus with polities!

and i would cry. so i think it’s a good idea

the other cyclops can just be represented by like some glowing red eyes we dont got the space or budget or people for multiple cyclops even in epic fantasyland lmao

athena appears again from behind some rocks or perhaps on the stairs. i just like her coming from nowhere it’s fun

there’s seventeen seconds of silence at the end of this song which we will use to have odysseus and athena move in front of the downstage traveler, which will close, hiding the rest of the set except for maybe like a rock or a bush to ground them. this lets everyone (quietly!) scene change during the next song

my goodbye

unfortunately putting these two at the very front of the stage with basically no set doesn’t let us do much interesting with them. luckily i think the song itself is interesting enough, i love a good verbal spat

that said, i think athena repeats “consider this as my goodbye” too many times at the end of the song. it works great for a song, but onstage i don’t think it would be as interesting? even if they were on a regular set, theres only so much you can do. i dunno i don’t write musicals

but because of that i’m unsure if athena should actually exit or just stand there and have the lights go down briefly or what. if i were doing the show for real i would just experiment with various things to see how they looked but Alas, i cannot

been listening to epic (the musical) (the concept album) a bunch and my brain has been hatching lots of ideas for how to stage it, so i will share them with you, good people of tumblr.

some caveats: i don’t pay attention to any extra streams, videos, etc, so most of my context is purely the music plus some things my friend tells me. therefore i will completely be making shit up on occasion, like in the gaps between some songs. i also know that jorge has said the dream is to do some really crazy cirque de soleil shit onstage, and i don’t really know enough about that to include it!

additionally, i will be trying to keep practicality and realism in mind, but this is still pretty far-fetched and assumes we have a large stage and near-infinite backstage storage at our disposal. to be fair, the odyssey has a LOT of different locations and you can’t make a story called epic without some massive set pieces. also, my experience is mostly deck crew, idk lighting stuff or choreography or anything, so i’m just going to try my best with that.

all onboard? epic. commence troy saga:

vocab notes

stage left and stage right refer to the audience’s left and right. upstage means away from the audience, and downstage means closer to them. midstage/center stage are self explanatory. most theatres (i think? i’ve only seen a couple) have multiple curtains that can divide the stage horizontally, called travelers. i think that’s it.

the horse and the infant

i want lights down everywhere but stage left, where there is a big sort of plywood cutout loosely in the shape of the trojan horse, with of course the interior of the horse painted on it. odysseus and a couple of his soldiers are here

i originally thought you could build a small space jutting out of the horse for them to crouch in but you would have to have some serious counterweight on the other side. it would look cool tho. even if you do do that, odysseus doesn’t stay there long because that’s a pretty cramped and uninteresting position to be in.

when the soldiers all say “yes sir!” the first time, the rest of the lights come up, revealing the city of troy, which is represented by some more painted plywood backdrops of the city at night. they’re all on wheels. the lights should still be fairly dim for the vibes, and pretty blue and orange to match the album. y’all are gonna learn quickly that i loveeee putting sets on wheels.

also more of odysseus’s men are there! as odysseus names each of his men, they do something kind of related to whatever he says.

when they say “yes sir!“ the second time, well, you can do some funky group choreo there. it’s kind of hard because technically they’re not attacking yet, just sort of demonstrating what will happen. shrugs.

once odysseus calls out penelope and telemachus…my stage had these ramps on the side next to the stairs with walls, and we would put people and sets there all the time. so depending on the theatre layout, they will appear there on stage right periodically through the entire show until odysseus gets home. throw a lil spotlight on them. bam.

naturally, when odysseus yells “attack!” the rest of the soldiers charge into the city and some trojan soldiers can enter stage right to fight them. the trojan horse flips to reveal the other side is painted like a gate/the city. slowly, the city backdrops roll offstage left, and the fighting greek/trojan soldiers move off with them. the music here will probably need to be lengthened to allow for this.

simultaneously, a room for the titular infant has been set up. probably like two half walls and a crib and a fancy decoration or some such. i’m thinking some kind of projection of like, silhouettes of odysseus to represent his vision and the eagle that represents zeus.

then zeus enters stage right and has his little convo with odysseus, stepping back to sort of dramatically reveal the crib to him. he and odysseus talk, nothing special happens, zeus spookily exits stage right as he sings his last line about odysseus choosing the blood on his hands

of note, i want 90% of the cast to be soldiers in this scene. as the soldiers die, odysseus’s little ensemble can shrink, and the dead soldiers can be double cast as the various enemies and their sidekicks. the exceptions to this are penelope, telemachus, zeus, and athena.

just a man

i want to be very specific about when odysseus looks at the audience for this one. it’s such a private, pivotal moment that i want him to avoid acknowledging that anyone except him and the baby exist. the two main points i think he can look at the audience are when he says “close your eyes, and spare yourself the view” and the “forgive me”s.

otherwise not much special in this song, its just odysseus holding a baby. he can act like he might drop it, from the wall, just so the audience is Aware, but it’s definitely important that by the end of the song what he does is ambiguous

i know the musical is meant to be sung through and so i want to avoid having moments where the stage goes dark for scene changes, but there are points where it’s unavoidable bc of the crazy set this thing has to have. so, we will put one right at the end here, keep the music real quiet for the audience to just sit and absorb this song

full speed ahead

when the lights come back up, we’ll have odysseus’s ship on stage left-centerish (odysseus should always be traveling from left to right, basically, since ithaca is stage right) and that’s all

dadada we introduce eurylochus and polities, then set for the island starts coming out on stage left for polities to comment on. the island sets can all be painted backdrops, so then theres two sides for some variety, and the same set of rocks/plants/trees arranged in different ways to show its a new place. i want the colors and things to be very bright and just this side of unnatural, because this isn’t home, they’re strange lands.

the boat can slowly be going off left as odysseus and polities make their way onto the island at the end of the song, which ofc flows right into the next

open arms

polities and odysseus wander across the stage for this, nothing exciting.

definitely can do some fun costuming with the lotus eaters when they pop up. i’m thinking of the trolls (or the hidden folk, i guess?) from frozen on broadway. but creepier, maybe

once they get the location of the cave, they can start walking back left and the lotus eaters can go off, taking/rearranging their set as they do because it’s about to be a new island. lights go down there as well. odysseus slows his steps to stop roughly center stage, or center-left depending on how big the stage is. he looks conflicted about what’s just happened. polities slowly walks off as he sings

athena comes out of somewhere. i think it would be fun for her to pop out from behind the set as opposed to entering from the wings. when she says “have you forgotten your purpose? let me remind you,” lights can come up on the right, kind of yellowy? i imagine ithaca as being very yellow for some reason. maybe some flickering to represent going into a flashback.

i know it’s not the original idea, but i think having a second actor play younger odysseus fighting the boar and stuff would be best/clearest. i have NO idea how to do the boar bc i feel like it would look kinda silly any way you did it? but that happens

athena this whole time is standing outside of the yellow light, narrating the flashback to odysseus. when young!ody starts calling her out, he doesnt look directly at her (because he’s bluffing, of course), until she steps into the light, which both symbolizes her dropping the spell and entering the flashback story

young!ody leaves and athena returns to odysseus after the last chorus, as she says “i still intend to make sure you don’t fall behind.” she gets very close to him to warn “don’t disappoint me” at the end, which makes odysseus look at her stubbornly. lights down, unfortunately, for another scene change to the cyclops cave
