Welcome to my Miscellaneous Vox Fic Rec List!

Soooo after a lot of consideration, I decided to make a third rec list. This one will be for miscellaneous fics, which can mean anything from smaller Vox pairings to fics that are not strictly Radiostatic or VoxVal. You'll see what I mean.

I will keep updating this periodically as I read more fics, too, so feel free to check back every once and a while! I'll reblog it when I update it, plus make a note with the date at the top. Trust me, this is by no means a complete list; there's fics I still want to add to this that I just haven't gotten to yet. I just decided to go ahead and post it anyways, because if I kept waiting until I ran out of fics to rec I'd probably be working on this forever.

These are not in any particular order; I'm going by both my Bookmarks list on AO3 and my memory of fics I forgot to bookmark. I also tried to make notes on what fics were written before season 1 released, but I might have missed some, so keep that in mind.

Alastor Makes a Porno by Charnel_Goat, spappest

Summary: Alastor interrupts Val and Vox's personal time to get his rut over and done with, and they're just going to have to deal with that.

Basically, Alastor and Val try to have a threesome, but they keep arguing, everyone's injuring each other trying to figure out the logistics, and nobody cares what Vox has to say about any of this.

Notes: This has Staticmoth, Radiostatic, and Valastor. It's not strictly leaning more towards any pairing (tho Val does make a pretty sweet comment at the very beginning about Vox lol), which is why it's going on the Misc List. Porn with an edge of hilarity that - despite the tags - made it pretty funny. Three terrible people being terrible to each other. Vox suffers. Heed the tags.

He's Visual, Alright! by dead_boy

Summary: For Valentines Day, Charlotte Morningstar— Lucifer’s brat— had announced the hotel would be hosting a sweetheart poll, allowing winners to vote for the biggest ‘sweethearts’ in Pentagram City! How adorable!

— Of course, when Angel gets involved, things get a little twisted, and hell treats it as a most-fuckable-celebs poll.

Vox isn’t the only one surprised by how high he scored, and how concerning the amount of votes he received was.

But there was no way in hell this “demand” was enough to make him give into Valentino and Velvet’s newest fixation: Making use of this fame and making Vox do some modelling!

Surely he won’t mind the lingerie and toys provided by Velvet and Valentino respectively, right?

Summary: How Vox met Vark. ♥

Summary: Everyone knew the Magnes sometimes liked to spice up their sex life by dragging another demon into the middle of it.

Vox maybe should have paid more attention to that particular tidbit of information than he did.

Notes: Lilith/Lucifer/Vox. Chapter 1 written before season 1 release, with Chapter 2 being released after season 1 release. I read for the crackship, ended up liking the Lilith/Lucifer/Vox dynamic and world-building a LOT. Lol. Poor Vox. Or good for him? Still has yet to be seen.

The Shopping Cart Test by spappest

Summary: Angel never expected Prince Charming to have a TV for a head, but when Vox kills Valentino and saves him from his abuse, well… Maybe Hell doesn’t have to be all that bad. With Val out of the way, everyone can have a happy ending. Angel’s safe, Charlie’s happy, and even Alastor finds love.

Oh, wait. This is Hell. It’s always that bad.

Notes: Angel/Vox. Started before season 1 release. First Staticdust fic I read. :)

Hold Me Up by Sameko

Summary: Vox has been in and out of a relationship with Valentino for years. Always breaking up. Always coming back.

Then one night comes the definitive crack at the expense of one of Valentino's employees, to which Vox never paid much attention other than for shits and giggles.

One night, one word too many, might be enough to shift the perspectives of two people once strangers to each other.

Notes: Staticdust. Pretty bleak and dark at times, but so, SO good. Two broken people trying not to cut each other with their edges while also trying to help each other.

Cruel Melody by Hiding_Behind_a_Pencil_and_Pen

Summary: A man hopelessly in love with a monster, despite how much it hurts.

A person chained to a beast he can never escape, no matter how hard he tries.

Vox and Angel Dust have given their body and heart to Valentino, and neither know how to free themselves from his lies.

But maybe, even if it never gets better, they won't have to suffer alone.

Or,

What if Husk was just a little too late to get to the bar in episode four? And a certain media Overlord helped Angel instead. They find out that they're not so different after all.

Notes: As of now, I think this is Queerplatonic Staticdust.

Revelations in Technicolor by Awesome_Possum

Summary: Velvette had been dead for six years, part of The Vees for four, and fucking Vox for a little over two. They had a good thing going.

On one of their bi-weekly Vox-mandated movie nights, Valentino put a plan into motion and Velvette learned something new and surprising about her business partner and part-time sugar daddy that made a shocking amount of sense.

It ultimately ended up bringing The Vees closer and if Valentino claimed that was his intention all along, no one had any reason to believe him.

Notes: The Vees are a V and Vox is the hinge, so he's in a relationship with both Valentino and Velvette. Interesting headcanons for Vox's human life. :) (What is the ship name for Velvette/Vox again?)

System Shutdown by Swoolie

Summary: Taking a leaf from Alastor's book, Vox goes on a small break from everything.

He doesn't stick around long enough to see the chaos that ensues after his sudden disappearance.

Notes: This is tagged with both Radiostatic and Staticmoth. It's too early in the story to tell definitively which direction it's going to end up, so for now it's going to be on the Misc list. I'll probably move it when it becomes more clear what the main pairing will be.

Dapple Rose by The_Penny_Tails

Summary: Everyone always assumes the same thing about Alastor and Vox's relationship: That it's one-sided, that it's based on fixation, and that the reason for their falling out was due to the obsession turning into something that couldn't be controlled.

All of those assumptions are correct. The only problem is, everyone gets the 'who is obsessing over whom' part of the equation wrong.

When Vox and Valentino end up stuck at the hotel, suddenly the entire relationship between the radio and television is put on display, casting it and Alastor in an entirely different light.

Notes: Tagged with both Radiostatic and Staticmoth. Due to both this and the entire story itself (you'll see what I mean when you read it), it's going here on the Misc List. I freaking love this story, because so far I've not seen another fic where Alastor was obsessed with Vox while Vox was not obsessed with him in return. :3 Everything Penny_Tails writes is gold!

Here I Come by Heliosolar

Summary: Vox contemplates his lackluster life as he stands over the edge of the city.

Or, the fall of Vox, both mentally and physically.

Notes: Written before season 1 release. No ships, just Vox. Heed the tags.

Entertainment for Two by Heliosolar

Summary: With the radio demon joining them for the night, Vox puts on a show the two overlords will never forget.

Notes: Written before season 1 release. Staticmoth and Radiostatic, at the same time. 😳

Proposition by Snorp_Lord

Summary: Alastor does not, strictly speaking, have a 'relationship' with the King of Hell. But they certainly have a something.

A something which does not include Vox. But Alastor is at least willing to indulge Lucifer in whatever this new idea is.

The new idea is Vox.

Notes: Contains Radiostatic, Radioapple, and Staticapple, but for this installment, Radiostatic is definitely the focus. Very intense, pretty sweet. 😳 Has 2 more parts in the series which are definitely worth the read, though they don't feature Vox as much.

Summary: “Okay, um, time out,” Lucifer said, because he felt like they were maybe losing the plot a little. “I feel like I should remind you that I’m not here because I was like, uh, overwhelmed with lust for you, in particular. I’m here because Husk said you were Alastor’s ex and I have poor impulse control and thought it’d be funny, but I’m realizing now that this is actually just really weird and you, my friend, have some serious issues that I am not equipped to handle.”

Or: Lucifer and Vox have a shared problem that starts with Al and ends in stor and has a in the middle—thankfully, there's a solution! (The solution is sex. It's just sex.)

Notes: Staticapple. Revenge sex. As in...they're both getting revenge on Alastor...using each other. Lol.

Wasteland by @heartofspells

I've had this fic on my list to read for so long. Now that I've read it, I'm not lying when I say I've thought about it nearly every day since. It's so hard to describe the impact of this story. Holli's writing is brilliant.

The relationships are so raw and complex. Sirius' character arc makes me want to hug him, shake him, smack him, and hug him again. And Remus. This is such an interesting take on Remus.

For a while now, I've been mulling over the idea of doing sublimation for a book cover, wanting to do a full print design vs the vinyl on top of book cloth that Marley and I have typically done. Then, while reading this fic, there was a line that hit me like a ton of bricks with a really vivid image of how I could do this particular type of design, and so an idea was born. @heartofspells was so kind to let me bind this. It was an experiment from beginning to end. I had a lot of failures, but managed some success in the end!

The line that inspired the cover was, "And his voice is calm, nothing hinting at the fire clearly raging through him, ravaging lush land and leaving a wasteland in its path." I immediately sat up, highlighting the line (adding it to my already excessive collection of highlights) with a super clear idea of a printed design that extended completely around the book, with the front right being burned land, and on the front left the beginning of a fire that would then extend around the back of the book.

It was hard to photograph, but the end paper looks and feels like leather.

The edges are so hard to photograph, but they are pewter gilded, with a hidden drawing of two hands clasped at the wrist. For anyone who has read the story, I'm sorry. For anyone who hasn't, please continue living in bliss.

The bridges on each chapter title have a lot of symbolism for the connection Sirius finds in different relationships in the story and transition from one part of his life to another. I wanted it to be pencil drawn to represent both Sirius being an artist, and to give the impression of a lack of stability.

The bridge is repeated on the bookmark, etched into acrylic with a mirrored back and with a deep blue black paint pressed into the etching. The charm is a vintage silver lighter that I etched with a black dog, (A call back to an actual lighter that Sirius owns in the fic!) attached with a small strip of black leather.

The biggest thank you again to @heartofspells for letting me bind this, and for writing the story. I really can't say enough about how beautiful the writing is. This is one that will stick with me for a long time.

hey anon! this is literally an impossible question to answer!

of my own works, I think the onlyfans au is my biggest au and was one of the first that I published to motgpblr. I think a lot of people became followers/mutuals/friends of mine because of that and the a/b/o au, so they're like my oldest daughters and they're very dear to me 😭

i'm also proud of the horror au because it's different than anything i've ever written before! it's a big challenge for me creatively and in terms of style and tone.

as for others, i'm going to try and post only a few fic recs but it's nearly impossible.

from @yeastinfectionvale, wrench to the heart, baby boots and riding suits, and kiss of death were some of the first fics I really got attached to in motogp and I am endlessly in love with them (although I devour basically anything from adora, even the bizarre stuff 😭)

@anitalianfrie also has a rosquez reconciliation au in the form of social media/articles/posts called this is a love story that is quite frankly insane. I can't even imagine the amount of time and effort that went into it and it lives rent free in my brain

@agnst-crrnt's time travel au is another one that I will love always and forever

@vanillow's cyborg au is something so unique from anything i've read in any fandom, really, and this reminds me that I should reread it

9. What is the longest fic you’ve read?

Off the top of my head, no idea. The longest piece I have bookmarked is a story called Follow Me Through by KTag12542 . Fantastic, plot-heavy sci-fi with well-developed characters that I highly recommend to anyone seeking a serious read.

12. What turns you away the most from a fic?

Poor grammar, spelling and formatting. A typo or two can happen to anyone, but if the author consistently struggles with the basics, it's highly unlikely that the story will make up for these deficiencies. For me, this is an automatic signal to hit the back button.

13. Has a fic ever made you cry?

Not yet, but Attrition by hellseries got me close. I don't usually read genres that are apt to be tearjerkers, so that might slant my chances. I did cry at the end of 'The Green Mile' by Stephen King though, so I know I've got it in me, lol.

22. Biggest turn-ons in fic?

I know this is mostly related to porn, but good characterization. Not every sex scene needs to end in both partners coming simultaneously crying out each others' names like an immature teenager's wet dream. Make it messy, awkward, and full of surprising little moments that can be just as hot. Give me bad sex, sex as a front for way deeper insecurities, sex that shows the ugliness of love, the desperation of wanting to find beauty in the muck, and maybe sometimes even failing to achieve it. A fic that did this just right is Strangelands by Claudia_flies. Short, explicit Clintasha, but with more depth than all of the 50 Shades books put together.

28. How do you feel about masturbation in fic?

Sure, keep it coming. Bonus points if the scene contributes to the plot or develops the character in some way instead of just being gratuitous. I might be biased towards angst, but sex scenes (whether alone or with a partner) are usually the most compelling moments for character development, whether positive or negative. However, I feel like there needs to be appropriate build up beforehand to truly invest the reader emotionally when it comes down to it . The one that stands out to me most is a scene spacelaska wrote for Graveyard For Lunatics.

43. Do you like fluff on its own or in conjunction with other elements (angst, sex, etc.)

I tend to avoid excessively sappy content because it often leads to out-of-character moments, but I do appreciate it if it's a part of a larger scene, such as Hurt/Comfort or post-coitus. Ultimately, it needs to flow with the overall storyline instead of being forced into place like a puzzle piece that doesn't belong. A Kink in the Armor by outtabreath (Pepperony) does a fabulous job at this, especially the later chapters.

Ah, what a cool project!

I’m sure you know, op, but context for anyone else reading: ao3 does not have an official app because those continual development costs would siphon off some of their limited funding, so they focus on optimizing the mobile browser experience instead. [Source]

But! I do still think the project will be both fun and worthwhile, and once you’ve finished I think you should try connecting with AO3 and sharing a copy of your research. Maybe you stumble on a brilliant idea that can be implemented on the mobile browser version.

Are you a writer as well as a reader?: Yes

What drew you to these platforms and why do you stay?: They’re community hubs, so that’s the biggest draw. I use AO3 exclusively these days because it houses a large body of work that’s very easy to filter through.

How long have you been engaging with the site Archive of Our Own specifically?: ~9 years.

What does your engagement with the platform look like?: I get on, I read, I post work, I check the site news, leave reviews, respond to comments, etc.

How often do you engage with the platform?: Can be once every 1-2 weeks or multiple times a day. I go through phases.

What are your favourite aspects of the platform?: A robust filtering system with no algorithms pushing work in front of me.

Do you think that you engage with all of the elements available on the platform?: Oh, absolutely not. I consider myself pretty proficient with AO3, but I’m still learning new tricks regularly. I don’t really do secret santas or gift exchanges, so that’s a whole field of features I’ve barely touched.

Are there any elements of the platform that frustrate you?: So much of what I want from AO3 is already on their to-do list. Top of my personal list is pervasive, site-wide filters in a more formal capacity beyond jury-rigging site skins.

I want to be able to go to my profile, and add tags to my blacklist so I never see work with X ship or X fandom or X rating, or X author, etc.

I would also love to be able to subscribe to tag clusters instead of individual tags. So not just follow “character A/character B” but follow specifically “A/B, exclude C/B, words >5000” etc., and have those works blurbs appear in some sort of dashboard on my homepage as they’re posted.

Of the fanfiction sites you frequent, where would you rank the site as a whole and why?: Ao3’s not flawless, but it’s certainly head and shoulders over FFN and Wattpad. FFN’s minimal tagging and tight summary wordcount limit always made finding things more tedious. Plus the new mid-story ads are unforgivable. I’ve never read more than a few lines on Wattpad and find it hellish to navigate with all the promoted stories being shoved in front of you.

What do other platforms have that Archive of Our Own does not, which you enjoy interacting with?:

FFN: I do like that they force authors to pick 1-4 main characters, and 1-2 main relationships. I also like the forced genre tag class a lot. Fanfic has a reputation, especially on AO3, for being very focused on romantic relationships, which is perfectly fine, but I think showing a list of genres to pick helps reassure authors that if they want to write a western or a mystery, there’s space here for that too.

Wattpad: I’ve seen a lot of Wattpad expats mention how much they miss the in-built function to comment line-by-line. Authors enjoy the specificity of those comments, and readers have said they feel more like they’re in a community with other readers that way. There is an ao3 site script for a floating comment box that follows with you as you read, but I read mostly on mobile and that’s desktop only.

Wattpad will also display a work’s read time. (Yes there also is an ao3 site script for that, again, doesn’t work on iOS mobile) Would love to see that built into the site w/ options to customize your reading speed.

Are there any features unique to Archive of Our Own that you enjoy?: Robust tagging, public and private bookmarks w/ the ability to add notes,a read-later list

If Archive of Our Own were to develop a mobile app, what features would you like to see?: Writers tend to post from desktops, so for a mobile app I’d spend my resources on ppl accessing it to read. Make navigating the archive easy, reading easy, and commenting (and responding to comments) easy. Everything after is just icing imo.

Would you like the app to be similar in aesthetic and function to the already established website?: I mean, cohesive branding is never bad, but I wouldn’t mind if it looked prettier while retaining the same functionality.

Are there any features you would like to see added to the platform in the app?: Mostly every new feature I’d want on an app, I’d also want implemented on the main site. I suppose an offline reading mode could be nice for those who don’t want to go through the trouble of downloading individual fics to their phone as ebooks.

cold weather

im stealing this one from you lol. growing up in canada, i've had my fair share of wild and freezing weather. but winter has always been my favourite season, and i've always loved colder weather. i was the kid who never wore a coat despite it snowing. i like the bite and chill, i like the lack of humidity and that i don't sweat as much, and i love being able to curl up in front of a fire place, or cuddling in a cocoon of blankets. the contrast of the chill and warmth is my favourite

i'll forever be grateful that i stumbled across fandoms when i was younger, because the communities i've joined (despite some drama), have given me so many friends, and so much wonderful content to enjoy. not to mention that im able to gift my own works to the communities for others to also enjoy. i love writing and reading, and recently i've been trying out doodles.

pets

im actually mildly allergic to cats and dogs, but i grew up with dogs in the house, and my friends had cats, and i love them both dearly. i always feel so soft around them, and i love being sweet and seeing them respond in kind. one of my best coping skills is to go and hug my family's dog. they're cuddly, soft, and always happy to see people. even if they don't want to be pet, just sitting in a room with a dog or cat can calm me down. one of my most treasured memories was when i was having a breakdown, and my sister's dog heard me and scratched at my door to be let in. she sounded so distressed, and when i finally let her in, she came and leaned her weight into my side and started licking my hands. she isn't usually emotionally sensitive, and it was really sweet that she tried to cheer me up like that 🥺

stories and art

this kind of ties into fandom, but ever since i could read and write, my biggest dream was to be an author. i would read any book i could get my hands on as a kid, including several math and history textbooks from school, a textbook on dinasaurs (that i became obsessed with), and little pamphlets from companies that came in the mail. i used to have my papa help me make my own little flip books, and i would hand-write multi-chaptered stories, because i was so enamoured with fictional worlds and story telling. nowadays, i have 100+ wips in my documents folder, and i have less time for original stories, but it's still just as fun for me. 80% of my free time is spent reading, and my 7k+ bookmarks on ao3 are a testament to that. reading, writing, making, and consuming art - it's like my little escape from reality. it's one of the only things im truly passionate about, and i couldn't live without it.

talking to my friends online

i don't really have a social life irl, so seeing messages from my mutuals and discord friends can really brighten my day. not to mention the multiple hour vc calls i have sometimes. it wrecks my sleeping schedule, but it's worth it bc i get so excited when i see they're online 😅

Yuletide Letter 2024!

Dear Exceptional Human,

I am beyond delighted that you’re writing for me! I’m a gold star Yuletide participant: I’ve signed up every year, and written at least one story every year, since the challenge began. That’s great news for you, because over the years, I’ve learned that the best Yuletide gifts are the ones that weren’t quite what I had expected, and also that gifts are satisfying and joyful for me as long as it’s clear that the author put effort and care into them. Basically, as long as you avoid my Do Not Wants and run spell check, I’m going to be over the moon with excitement at whatever you write for me.

If you weren't assigned to me and want to write me a treat, you are a fucking hero. I love you and your bonus story already.

My biggest non-obvious DNW is babyfic. No pregnancy, no babies, no little kids. I’m also a grumpy Jew, so I’d prefer not to receive stories with strong Christmas or winter holiday themes. The “five things” format is not my favorite. Please don’t center your story around ships that I did not ask for. All of these global DNWs are also in my sign-up.

But I like a lot more things than I dislike! I usually read my Yuletide gift(s) while riding the L down to Chinatown for my family’s annual dim sum feast, so please give me something to make me smile, laugh out loud at, or feel uncomfortably aroused by on public transportation. Porn is optional, obviously, but: oral sex, eroticized hands, exhibitionism, shower sex, gender play. I like experimental structures and styles, as well as more standard ones, and I am fine with whatever POV and tense you choose. If you are the kind of person who does multimedia or interactive fiction, or just clever footnotes, I am all for that. I love worldbuilding, whether it’s adding detail to a sprawling superhero universe or fleshing out the local color of a small American town. I like stories that stick close to canon or present interesting “what if” canon divergences, and I also like superhero and In Space AUs.

I tend to write the fic I want to see in the world, and you’ll get a good sense of me by browsing my AO3 account. My AO3 bookmarks are way out of date, but they still work as a recs list, and therefore a great way to see what kinds of fic appeal to me and make me happy.

Poor Things (2023): Bella Baxter, Max McCandles, Harry Astley, Toinette

This movie hints at so many stories that aren't told, and I love its whimsical worldbuilding. Its found-family ending is delightful and pushes all of my buttons, and I would love a story in which any or all of the requested characters explore what it means to create a family on their own terms. I've set this one to "gift must feature one or more of my chosen character tags," so feel free to focus on whomever you'd like, or to incorporate all four requested characters. Since Harry disappears from the narrative after the cruise ship sequence, how does he reunite with Bella and join her family? How do Max and Toinette build a relationship of their own, sexual/romantic or otherwise? How does Bella continue to develop now that her mental maturity matches her body's? I love how sex-crazed the film is, and I'm good with canon-consistent gore and body horror, with some boundaries noted in my DNW list. The world of the movie runs on its own logic, and science works differently there - a worldbuilding element that explores this would interest me, too.

DNW: Stories centered around pregnancy, babies, or raising children. Strong Christmas/winter holiday themes. Phonetic representations of accents or “broken English” used for comedy. Extensive, graphic descriptions of homophobic, transphobic, racist, or sexual violence. Focusing only on opposite-sex romantic or sexual relationships in a way that undermines the queer and polyamorous canon ending of the film. Sex involving wound penetration or stump fucking. Sex involving non-sentient animals or characters who cannot consent because of medical alteration.

Inside Out (Pixar Movies): Riley Andersen, Val Ortiz

Guess who watched Inside Out 2 and came away shipping it? If that's also you, then give me the sweet, age-appropriate hockey girl romance that the movie definitely suggests. How do Riley's emotions handle her first romance? Or depict it from inside Val's head, and show us what her emotional dashboard looks like. A story centered around Val doesn't have to be romantic - provide her backstory, give her a challenge as hockey team captain, or find another creative way to explore her emotions and mindscape. Or write a romance where the two characters are older, meeting in adulthood, and show how their minds have gained complexity as they've matured. The conceit of little emotion creatures inside people's heads is a big part of the appeal for me, so please find some way to incorporate them, even if the focus of the story is on the outside world.

DNW: Stories centered around pregnancy, babies, or raising children. Strong Christmas/winter holiday themes. Phonetic representations of accents or “broken English” used for comedy (I’m especially sensitive to this when it comes to native Spanish speakers). Explicit sex between young teenagers. While a transgender awakening, an exploration of mental health difficulties, or a story about neurodivergent mindscapes would all be interesting in this fandom, they're not what I want for my gift.

Mammoth Club RPF: Max LaDue, Molly McCormack, Alan McCormack

I love this married team of theme park YouTubers and their cohost/best friend Max. I'm listing my shippy/romantic option first because something has to go first, but I'm equally excited about my gen prompt. The only thing that would make Mammoth Club better is if the OT3 were real, so make my Yuletide bi and write me that ship. When and how did they become a polycule? How do they balance the dynamic with their working relationship, and is it the same in their private lives as on YouTube and Twitch? How many dirty Disney puns can you get into one work of fan fiction? Their work takes them into a lot of situations that could create relationship tension as well as escalate romance, so use those travel settings: cramped cruise ship rooms, secret fireworks viewing points, long international flights, soggy rainstorm days in the Magic Kingdom. Alternatively, send the Mammoth Club team to visit and review a place outside of their usual roster of theme parks and branded tourist attractions. Take them to your hometown and have them try every restaurant. Or imagine them traveling to a fictional tourist destination: what do they think of Star Trek's Risa, Naboo's Lake Country, or The Good Place? Molly and Max are the big personalities, but Alan's low-key enthusiasm and excellent shirt collection are my favorite - and he's the emotional linchpin of the trio.

DNW: Stories centered around pregnancy, babies, or raising children. Strong Christmas/winter holiday themes, including stories set during theme park holiday events - although other theme park holidays, such as Halloween, are fine. Phonetic representations of accents or “broken English” used for comedy. Using your fic as a soapbox about the awfulness of Disney as a corporation or the real-life horrors of traveling to Florida these days, although passing mentions are fine. Sex involving character costumes, or sexualization of character costumes (basically, no hardcore furry business - non-costume merch is fine).

Poker Face (TV 2023): Charlie Cale

Charlie Cale immediately became one of my favorite TV detectives ever, and what I want from fic is simply more of her, solving mysteries in her quirky way. Basically, I want casefic, however you want to define that. Set the story in your hometown and bring it to life for me, or highlight a subculture you know a lot about. Or give me drag queens, figure skaters, or Disney theme parks, the weird cultures that are close to my heart. Crossovers with other fandoms are welcome, especially if they feature Charlie inserted into other media, solving a murder in that universe. (Poker Face in Discworld? Poker face on Deep Space Nine?) Keep the show’s dry wit and down-to-earth tone as much as you can, and feel free to play with time and tell the story out of order, as the show often does. Explore how Charlie’s lie detector powers and her talent for crime-solving have affected her, and how these abilities work in her head. What I’m looking for is a lost episode of Poker Face - either one that could be an actual episode of the show, or something improbable but fun.

This is a repeat request from last year, because I still want it.

My DLCs

The only reason I'm including this list here is for people who are legitimately curious of what I own 🤷🏻‍♀️

I try not to go crazy using DLCs when I make builds because I understand that some people are confined to the DLCs they own. Often I see builds that use 20 DLCs and it's like... you guys know that people don't have that many DLCs, right? Personally there are some I refuse to buy because I know there are mechanics in them that make gameplay awful or don't mesh with how I want to play.

Typically when I forego using a limited amount of DLCs it's because I'm making things for myself and then I decide to share it later. But if I'm originally making a build with the intent to share it- I limit myself.

for the ask game: my evil wife kim dokja

Saw the character you sent for this ask and INSTANTLY nefarious grinning scooby doo laugh the whole works. Okay. Okay

one aspect about them i love: How can I list JUST one *launches a bazooka into the atmosphere and blows up a distant island* Okay I'll try. Because he's a reader, he IMMERSES himself in a story and as a result he feels a fondness for certain characters and a dislike for others. As a result, a lot of the choices he makes, which in his head he rationalizes as being Logical and Reasonable and The Best Choice because he knows how the story ends, are actually heavily influenced by his own emotions. Literally so much about the novel so far is him attempting to PUSH for a certain outcome simply because it's the ending HE wants and he wants to mminimalize suffering.

one aspect i wish more people understood about them: I can't say anything for sure given I haven't completed the novel yet and I'm not involved in ORV's fandom, so I'll use this space instead to talk about a character trait of his that I think is really interesting: in the first 100 or so chapters of ORV he laments his "lack of skill" (when attempting to learn abilities he has no natural affinity for, opting instead to rely on Bookmark) and the fact that people/characters appear to grow faster when they're not around him but its like... He does have skill and I don't think he's hindering the progress of his companions. I believe that arguably one of his biggest skills is the very thing that's allowing him to progress through the scenarios so quickly and that's his ability to lead, and a surety and confidence in guiding others that warrants an unbending devotion from the others around him.

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character: HMMM No headcanons so far unfortunately as I am still familiarizing myself with the character and the text but REST ASSURED when I am finished... there will be thoughts!

one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more: From where I'm currently at in the novel (30% of the way through) I'd love to see more interactions with Lee Jihye and Uriel. In regards to the former: I find the standoffish nature between them incredibly interesting with Jihye adamantly refusing to concede she has any fond feelings for KDJ, and the text acknowledging that the way he moves through life gave her the inspiration to fight and sacrifice herself for others. In regards to the latter, I simply find their interactions to be unbelievably funny. Uriel is hilarious to me in general like... girl!!!

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character: HOW does the ask game expect me just to list off one character this is actually insane. KDJ has many good dynamics so I'll take some liberties and list off the main ones: Yoo Joonghyuk, Jung Heewon (<- what do I say here. RAAAAGH *throws a grenade*), Shin Yoosung, Lee Gilyoung (<- they are his kids! i'll especially never stop thinking about the moment KDJ said he didn't regret choosing Shin over all of Seoul, and he was earnest here and it wasn't just a Tactical Choice). Whenever I think about them I'm like that werewolf ripping shirt meme.

Scott plops next to him on the porch and stretches his legs out. He's gone through another growth spurt and is only an inch shy of Dad now, so there's quite a milage of legs to stretch. John taps a bookmark on his tablet and suppresses an urge to roll his eyes.

- Light pollution. I thought you'd be dancing or whatever it is you do at parties - and you're hanging out here with your Über Nerd plus one.

The dimples deepen by a grin.

- You're my favorite Über Nerd, anyway.

The smile drops quickly, replaced by familiar worry. John can see his brother's features sharpen in the dim light. He really wishes Scott wouldn't, but there's no stopping the smotherhen from making an appearance now.

- You feel okay, Johnny? Ready to go home?

- Not unless you are. I'm good. I've got stuff to read.

Blue eyes are searching his face, not quite buying it, and he almost forgets the mandatory tagline:

- Don't call me Johnny.

He can feel the tension drop a bit, but Scott's mind is already in full gear, planning an out.

- The Tinies will be a handful at bedtime. Alan didn't have his nap and you know how they both get.

John has to forcibly exhale mild exasperation. Scott has already made up his mind he ought leave, now he's just fitting a brother for an appropriate excuse. Any brother. Virgil volunteered to step up as second in command for Saturday night. Dad was staying late at some important meeting with GDF. John semi-convincingly feigned wanting to go to the party, because there was no other way Scott would have gone on his own. It wasn't that bad. As in, big brother was having fun and smiling, and nobody stopped the Ginger Tracy from slipping out front, away from the noise and the the undulating bodies for a date with his reading list. Until, of course, Scott noticed and was ready to give up his night out.

- Virgil can wrangle the Tinies just fine, Scott. I'm good out here. Go mix'n'mingle, shoo!

That does score another dimpled smile, fond and soft this time. Which is exactly the point of the hole operation. After the fiasco crash of Dad's experimental rocket plane, TV-21, spirits had been significantly low in the Tracy household - Dad was barely talking to them, always in one meeting or other with Uncle Lee, Kyrano and the young genius engineer Scott dubbed "Brains", and Scott was almost as devastated and heartbroken as their father. So John was quite determined to weather this one party through, for his brother's sake. Unless, of course, he forgot what a force a Tracy's mind made up was. Blue eyes met turquoise again, with determination.

- It's a clear night. There won't be so much light pollution on the farm. We can go check it if the Tinies are settled, then make cocoa and do some stargazing if you want. We can rope Virgie in too, if he's not asleep, take Mom's blanket to the roof...

An idea occurred to John so swiftly his eyes went comically wide, probably.

- You wanna go home too?

This time the blue got momentarily shielded by lashes and the smile turned sheepish.

- Yeah... I really do. You good to go?

- Sure.

When was John ever NOT good to leave an assembly of rowdy strangers. But maybe for the first time it really hit this was NOT biggest brother's, Mr. Popular Center of Attention, preferred company either. They were - the motley crew of little brothers.

- Hey, Scott? You're my favorite... Not Über Nerd.

Okay, THAT elicited a full on laugh - bright and dingling in the crisp night air. Which was definitely a win.

ADHD Resources for the RPC!

So, a lot of you have noticed that I post a LOT of stuff about ADHD on here. And I’ve had quite a few people message me asking to talk about it or saying that looking at my posts, they suspect they have it too. And I know a lot of other people in the RPC who also have ADHD. The solidarity is amazing! I am always happy to help and talk about this!

I was unofficially diagnosed by a doctor as a child but never made official because my mother is against ADHD meds (and still won’t help me make the diagnosis official now I’m an adult). I’m not the best person to give advice on diagnosis and meds, but I can talk your ear off about almost everything else! So, I thought I would gather a bunch of resources to help out my fellow RPers who are going through these struggles.

Basic Tests

These are for those of you wondering about if you should see about a diagnosis. This is by NO means proof that you do have ADHD, but it’s a good starting line. These are not 100% accurate and recommend doing a bit of research before speaking to your doctor. And remember, testimonials, report cards and any other form of proof you can get your hands on will likely help out with a diagnosis.

Ahh, hello!! I'm so happy you liked my last reclist! I've actually thought about doing a part two of this because I encountered several excellent ones since making that last post, so I spent the morning trawling through my bookmarks and here we go!

A few of these might also be on my other reclists, but they're good and they fit the criteria so I'm mentioning them again! By coincidence, all fics on this list were written before season 2 and thus don't take that canon into account. As always, y'all are more than welcome to chime in with your own recs. Fic Recs: Jaskier and the Kaer Morons (Part 2!)

There Are Other Gifts than Silver by @elder-flower (Rated T, 18k, Geraskier)

Behold the wonderful work of my absolutely amazingly brilliant secret Santa!! Geralt invites Jaskier home to Kaer Morhen for the first time and it’s the sweetest thing ever.

The Path Not Taken by sopses (Rated M, 40k, endgame Geraskier with minor Jaskier/Lambert)

This one was recommended to me in the notes of my last reclist, and it’s really good! After the dragon hunt, Jaskier saves the life of an injured Eskel. It all just sort of escalates from there.

Two wolves, a cat and a bard walk into a tavern by Beginte (Rated T, 6k, Geraskier and Lambden)

Jaskier and Geralt bump into Lambert and Aiden on the way to Kaer Morhen. Awkward meet-the-boyfriend ensues. This one never fails to make me grin — I’ve read it at least twice!

The Witchers’ Bard by operacricket (Rated T, 5k, Geraskier)

While taking care of a group of slavers, Lambert, Eskel, and Vesemir discover a bard in need of rescue. Excellent bard whump and hurt/comfort with a happy ending. Make sure to check the tags!

Jaskier’s family is cursed — every male-born child cannot be named, and anyone who tries to refer to them by the names they are given will have an allergic reaction. Only a soulmate speaking your true name aloud will break the curse. Jaskier is determined to break the curse, and what better way to do that than traveling with a witcher?

I Was Pledged to You, To You I Pledge Myself by anarchycox (Rated T, 9k, Geraskier)

When Jaskier is four, his daring escape from a family dinner and subsequent rescue by a witcher results in him becoming betrothed to someone called Geralt of Rivia. The plan is for them to marry when he’s twenty. Scenes from Jaskier's life of meeting every witcher but his betrothed, until one day in a shitty tavern, he finally meets Geralt.

Sing Me a Song by Arvari (Rated T, 2k, Geraskier and Lambden)

Aiden isn’t dead, but Lambert doesn’t know that. To remedy this, Aiden seeks out Jaskier (who is away from Geralt after the Mountain) to sing a song and let Lambert know he’s alive. Technically, Aiden isn’t a Kaer Moron, but this is just too hilarious not to mention!

Jaskier and Mountains Just Don't Mix by C4t1l1n4 (Rated G, 4k, Geraskier)

Despite the other Witchers' positive reaction to Geralt's bard, Vesemir is reluctant to have a human stay with them at Kaer Morhen so Jaskier attempts to leave and ends up almost freezing to death on the side of the mountain. Excellent hurt/comfort with a happy ending!

Return to Cidaris by pinksugartales (Rated M, 34k, Jaskier/Valdo Marx transitioning into Geraskier)

A modern AU. Valdo returns to his hometown for the first time in years, inadvertently reconnecting with his first love. Jaskier follows his fiancé a week later and finds himself the obstacle to their Christmas love story. At least the man he meets in the little town’s bakery is there to offer him support. Wonderfully depicted relationships. The Kaer Morons aren’t the focus, but their presence is absolutely wonderful!

Another one from the notes of my previous reclist! I haven’t read this one, but have been assured that it’s very good. Jaskier goes to Kaer Morhen and there is both fluff and angst.

Aw this is a lovely thing to do anon! I'll just list a couple off of the top of my head.

@budgie2budgie B is incredible, She was one of the first simblrs I found. I didn't have a tumblr at the time so I bookmarked her page along with a few of the other OG's (dani-paradice, @inabadromance etc) and I'd visit them every couple of days to check for new CC until I eventually made my own page. It's been great to see her move into more story telling with her rotational game play and her imagination knows no bounds when it comes to edits. Have you seen her recent Barbie posts? She's so bloody talented.

@oatberrytea God I just heckin' love her. Absolute love and warmth just radiates from this girl and her blog. She’s been my biggest hype man since we found each other. Ultimate grandma vibes, 100% pure wholesomness on her blog. I’d kill to live in her game or even her actual house, I bet she makes the best cookies. Her game looks so soft and cozy and inspired me to create a save and play my sim Doris who I’ve had so much fun playing! (2)(3).

I’m lumping @servegrilledcheese​ and @ratboysims​ together becaue they both give me the same vibe, they’re both funny and crazy talented. Their game play posts are everything I wish I could do but just don’t seem able to, something to strive for. They have such recognizable and destinct sim styles, I can always tell a post by either of them while looking through my dash.

@mellindi​ Holy shit, have you seen her blog? I’m sick and tired of this gals talents. You name it she can do it. She’s a fantastic writer and bring so much life to her sims. She’s also so insightful and helpful. Her website is full of brilliant tutorials and information on mods to make your gameplay better! A real gem in the community and must be protected at all costs!

@mandy-sims Mandy has such adorable game play pictures but she’s mostly my go to for sim lookbooks. I’ve never been into clothing for fashion, I wear black leggings and some kind of black band or logo t-shirt every day and have done since I was a teenager (although I permanently had black skinny jeans glued to my legs back then). So I never know how to dress sims. I typically stick them in one of the styled looks and call it a day. BUT when I do wanna make a little bit more effort Mandy is where I go and just copy the looks she puts on her sims. Her decorating is also chefs kiss.

@orphyd An actual real life angel who walks among us. She’s been so supportive of me over the years and watching her grow in return has been a blessing. I wish I could just connect her game to mine and have instant access to all of her sims and interiors because they’re at least a 17/10. Genuinely sweet and loving person.

Sometimes, AO3 Is Really Fucking Weird

There are several ways to effectively remove a fic from AO3. Obviously, deleting it is the most straight forward, and orphaning is a choice too, but there are several others. For example, some people just abandon the entire account and make a new one that can't be associated with their old identity. Others do a "fancy" version of orphaning, where they turn their username into a pseud and specifically orphan the pseud, so that a search will turn it up as "(original username) (orphaned)". I could go on, but listing the options isn't really the point of this post.

The point of this post relates to another of the methods some people use. Recently, I've noticed an uptick in authors who want to delete/remove their works from AO3 choosing to put them into unrevealed/hidden collections which they themselves own. This has multiple advantages - the biggest and most obvious is that it preserves kudos, comments, bookmarks, and hits. It enables the author to still see their own story if they want to, but they also don't have to. Further, if they're ambivalent about out-right deleting it, they don't have to, and they don't have the loss of control that comes with orphaning - by putting it in a collection, they can always always choose to either delete it later, or re-associate it with themselves later. They can edit it easily, c&p easily, all that jazz. Links to it will still work, too, they'll just show that it's in an unrevealed collection. This is how both HazelDomain and Moosefeels handled their recent mass "deletions" - nothing was actually deleted, it was all just stashed in a collection. It struck me as a very elegant solution to a lot of the problems presented from deleting (like, losing all the feedback) and orphaning (losing all control).

But.

Today while doing some of my pre-new-survey maintanence for the Destiel Favs survey, I discovered something that (as I indicate in the title) is really fucking weird, and is something that anyone who is considering this method of removing their works should know.

If you put a work in an unrevealed collection, and it's in one or more other collections, the owner of the other collection(s) will still be able to see the entire work.

I hadn't realized this sooner, because I almost never log in to the alt I use for the Destiel Favs stuff. I did all the checking for Hazel and Moosefeels using my main - which is a moderator on the Destiel Fan Survey Favs Collection, but not an owner. I'm only logged into the alt now cause I'm doing my semi-annual clean up of the bookmarks and such. And what I found was...

This is what you'll see:

Nothing else about the fic will be visible, not even it's name, much less tags or anything.

But when I, in my alt as DestielFanFavsSurvey, owner of the collection, click it?

There's the fic.

Which is to say: moving a fic to an unrevealed collection ONLY completely hides the work IF it's in no other collections. If it's in a collection, it will be visible to the owner(s) of that collection, even if it's been marked unrevealed in a different collection. The "unrevealed" does NOT take precedence over a collection owner's ability to see the work regardless of the revealed/unrevealed status of the fic in another collection.

(Sorry if this is confusing, it's surprisingly hard to explain I'm finding? Basically:

Fic A is in Collection A, Collection B, and Collection C.

The owner of Collection C decides to switch the Collection to "unrevealed."

Even though the owners of Collection A and Collection B have absolutely nothing to do whatsoever with Collection C, they can still see the work.

Why does this matter?

Basically, based on my thinking about it thus far since I found out like half an hour ago, I see three ways this potentially matters:

1. For people actually running challenges, who actually WANT the capability to make a work unrevealed, make sure that the author doesn't put it into other collections, because it will still be revealed to the owners of those collections.

2. For authors who are worried about adding their works to collections and having the owners subsequently fuck them by reverting it to hidden, if you make your OWN collection, and add all your own fics to it, you can at least maintain your own access. (which you can do anyway by going to https://archiveofourown.org/users/(YOURUSERNAME)/collection_items?approved=true, and you can remove them there too I think, but still).

3. For people who want to use this as an alternate means of deleting their works, people like me will still be able to see it. If you REALLY want to make sure no one has access? You'll have to make sure you remove the work from all collections other than your own, because otherwise, the owner(s) of other collections the work is in will still be able to see it, bookmark, kudos, or subscribe. They will NOT be able to comment or download it (I checked) but they CAN copy and paste it.

I honestly have no idea if this is meant to be a bug or a feature, and the frequency with which it'll matter to folks is likely nil, but still, it's a pretty noticeable loophole in the "I'll just pseudo-delete by putting it in an unrevealed collection" thing and I thought people should know.

Someone with more time than me can probably figure out more fucking weirdness related to all this, but I'm out of time. I have checked that, as the owner of the non-hidden collection, I cannot reveal the fic myself, nor can I do anything other than my usual moderator/owner options (add it or remove it are about all I can do.)

But basically: be aware, if you really want to use the unrevealed collection method to hide your work, make sure you remove it from any collections you don't own!!!

@ao3commentoftheday sorry for the random ping but this seemed like the kinda bizarre-ass AO3 shenanigans thing that might be of interest to you and the people who follow you. (And sorry if you already knew this - I knew that the owner of the unrevealed collection could see the works, that's not news to me, but that the owners of OTHER, separate collections can ALSO see it is, uh, a shock, at least to me.)
