편지- Letter ✍️

Now that the dust has settled, I found a peaceful moment in the afternoon to sit down in silence and listen to Letter while trying to unpack all my thoughts. This lengthy post will be more in the tone of my personal stance and connection with the song, omitting going into too much detail about the grammar and explaining Korean expressions but still I will try to explain how the song makes an impression with the specific language used.

My reflections:

From the beginning onwards, the song sounds very delicate, while Jimin is singing to us in the polite form and bringing up multiple themes that are characteristic for the ARMY fandom and our path with the boys over the years: the desert, the sea, the cold winter and a warm spring day... He is wishing us to be happier and for this to last forever, while promising to be there when you feel like falling and cherishing all the memories we made together.

In that way, I, as a listener, am in a headspace where I am reminiscing on our story with Jimin as an idol and all we've been through together with him (and trust me, if you have joined just recently, there has been a lot darker times)...

Though as the song progresses and as the refrain comes on, the urgency to express his emotions intensifies together with the instrumental. And this is where Jungkook's vocals come in too. Jimin with the help of Jungkook is suddenly singing in a casual (lower politiness) form as if directly trying to reach out to the person on the listening end individually, addressing every line with a higher intensity and more personally. It just feels more intimate, even more earnest and more powerful. Moreover, the lyrics and chosen words feel more targeted at an individual rather than towards a group (even the scrapped lyrics felt more like he was writing towards a single person in this section).

Whatever the reason for Jungkook's appearance in this part, it makes the emotional impact even more convincing.

No matter what angle you may choose, Letter is an incredibly heartfelt track packed with strong emotions. I believe it's a song for ARMY and at the same time it is a song for someone in Jimin's life that has been his lifeline and his strong heart connection to them prompted him to write these lyrics woven with thick emotions.

That being said, Jimin sharing this unique space with Jungkook to support him in his emotional expression with his hidden layered vocals and some more audible backing vocals speaks volumes. Just the fact that Jungkook is present on a track (and on the most intense and personal part of the track) where Jimin is earnestly trying to deliver a message to the listener from the depths of his heart is special, no matter how anyone subjectively wants to interpret the song and its content: Do you think they are singing directly to ARMY? Great! I'd argue having someone that shares the same love and commitment, understands what you're feeling and is able to channel the same emotions as you, and as a testament to your bond you let them contribute to your own artistic expression with theirs, is incredibly precious.

There are things that Jimin will never comment on, so I doubt we will ever find out how this song and Jungkook's feature came to be besides what we already heard. Jimin is incredibly smart in how he tailors his message and communication with the broader audience. Thus, while on the surface the public sees him dancing sensually with female dancers, a longer careful look would give you a view of the half-half makeup and other dichotomies in the choreo/concepts, specifically chosen pieces of clothing, specially crafted details in the performance sets, etc. And the same thing applies to the song Letter too. Only after listening closely, you'll get to uncover layer by layer what lies hidden in this "hidden" track. On top of that, Jungkook casually showing he learnt the chords for this song in a random live broadcast out of nowhere prior to the release of the album just shows there is more to the story than we'll be ever told.

Personally, I will be keeping this song close to my heart and holding onto it until their military service concludes. It has become my own lifeline to my life as a fan and getting to hear Jimin and Jungkook together delivering these precious words is something I will cherish forever 🙏

All of the Bad Kids' schedules are stressing me out so much but Gorgug's especially. I have academic trauma that this season is very mildly triggering - not so much that I can't watch it. What a fun opportunity to work through all these feelings that I've buried lol.

I finally caught up on watching the Ahsoka show, and I’m so glad, because episode five was so good. I think that it did a great job of addressing the fact that Ahsoka never got to really sit back and fact the trauma of being thrust into a war as a child (which is why I think it’s important to me that we saw two battles, one before and one after she left the Jedi Order—we’re reminded that she never escaped the fighting, even back then).

I’ve seen a few posts now that reference Anakin asking “is that what this is about?” when Vader comes up, and I was surprised to see how differently I had interpreted the scene from what they all were saying. The posts mainly depict this line as Anakjn brushing off Vader like it’s not a big deal, and Ahsoka shouldn’t think about it. In my eyes, though, Anakin sees Vader as his mistake, his demon, something haunting him. He’s not brushing off the fact that it mattered to Ahsoka, he’s denying the idea that the things he did wrong are somehow her mistakes, too. And it fits perfectly into that surrounding dialogue: Anakin is telling her she’s part of a legacy, thinking that, by holding onto that, she can know she’s something more than the violence and fighting she took part in. He tells her that she is more than that, and that he knows because he, too, is more than that. But Ahsoka can’t look at herself and not see the violence which was her mark on the legacy, and when she looks at Anakin, she sees only the evil he did or the master he was.

And then we come to the line “Is that what this is about?” It’s not asked in a way of ‘Oh, is that all?’ The followup exchange clarifies this:

“If I am everything you are…”

“You’ve learned nothing.”

Anakin has been telling her that the choices she had to make during the war weren’t her fault, nor were the mistakes, that she’s MORE than that. And what she’s gotten out of that is that his mistakes are hers, too. And I don’t think he realizes she’s doing that until this point, which is when he takes them back to the beginning, changing tactics and becoming Vader, so that Ahsoka can address this supposed part of herself she’s afraid of.

I don’t know if any of that makes sense, but it’s just SUCH a great scene, and Hayden Christensen did so well as Anakin in the episode as a whole, and I loved this line and had feelings about it

Soma is a bit dumb. He's not good at coming up with plans or thinking ahead. Really he's quite hopeless on his own. He believes everything that Enma tells him, even the most outlandish things. Soma's face is heart shaped and his cheek bones are a bit pronounced. His lips can also be described as heart shaped. He has one brown & one blue eye. His eyes are almond shaped and he has long lashes. Soma's hair is a light reddish brown that, unstyled, reaches his butt. He usually ties his hair up into a high ponytail. He has a athletic build and is fairly tall, being somewhere in the 5'9 to 5'11 range. His fingers are longer than usual while his nails are short. Sometimes his nails look a bit rough, as he bites them... and his fingertips. He has one birthmark on his inner left thigh, it's a simple oval shape.

Viktor's Complicated Color Progression to The Machine Herald and his strugles with Black Mana

Viktor is a very complicated character with a myriad of tragedies. To me I think based on his story, his place in the world, his relationship to the color pie pushes Viktor firmly as Yore-Tiller. It is the combo of Artifice. Of innovation, progress, evolution.

Viktor is a scientist at heart, a man of discovery and creation. As a child he tinkers and builds and as an adult he invents and evolves. This is why Viktor's core color is obviously Blue Mana.

Inherently curious about the world.

As he meets Singed he gains structure, a mentor, he sees a purpose in science. Not just finding fun or making toys but cultivation and growth. Even if he doesn’t understand it yet this is the foundation of his connection to White Mana.

Viktor gains a sense of morality, ambition is not worth anything. Not worth harming those you claim to help. Suffering is never justified

“There is always a choice.”

This Azorius state is where I believe Viktor spends most of his life. A scientist with an ethic working under constraints in a very ordered society. Piltover is an Azorius state. One more heavily influenced by Blue than White but Azorius nonetheless. Viktor gives himself completely to Piltover until he meets Jayce.

And then the sickness starts. The Desperation. As Viktor rots so do some of those morals, those boundaries. He steps over his line in the sand. But only he does, he won’t sacrifice anyone else for his ambition or his salvation. He gains a tempered connection to Black Mana.

This is a connection that is wavering, he is desperate and grasping. He is not ambitious enough to truly harness black, he can’t bring himself to harm another for his own gain. He only carves himself apart to gain a future. But then he goes too far, Skye gets killed and he pulls out completely.

When shown the cost Viktor won’t pay.

He lets go of the Hexcore, of Black.

And then he dies.

Here he sits, until his body is healed.

From the tomb he rises. Now he is empowered by the Hexcore, and at first I think he teeters on the edge of Black.

He is lost, aimless and emotionless.

And then the Rebirth, the Evolution. He saves the people he always wanted to help. He is renewed.

He touches Red Mana.

He is passionate about his dream, he is exploring new vistas and ignoring boundaries but not out of a desire to gain but to help. He puts himself in a vulnerable self sacrificing position for Warwick regardless of Skye’s knowledge of the systems limits

“He is worth the risk.”

He fosters a chaotic growth in his commune. A place of change and revolution and peace. A place where the Jeskai colors flourish. However there is no place for Green Mana here. At least not for Viktor. Viktor seeks to evolve and as he puts it,

“Evolution’s purpose is to supersede nature.”

Not a very Green ideology if you ask me.

This leads us to the Hammer of Damocles above Viktor.

Jayce.

Jayce for whatever reason (my theory on why is far too long to get into but basically Jayce is creating the future he saw by mistake, tragic consequences, three times the charm, etc.) decides that Viktor and what he has built needs to die. Regardless of if he was correct (I don’t believe he was for aforementioned reasons I won’t get into.) or not he has done damage. There is no going back.

Whether because of Singed or as I hope his own desperation, ambition, and need to evolve will push Viktor to his final state. This is when he will finally grasp Black Mana.

He will touch the Void, let go of his humanity and seek only progress. He gains the ambition and the stomach for violent action. Viktor was not born with power, he wasn’t handed power, no, as Silco once described Viktor must now take power by any means necessary.

To herald a new age, a new world.

To bring about the Grand Evolution.

I don't intend to minimize the impact of COVID, but I've seen this post a few times on my dash claiming that COVID is BSL-3, "Like anthrax and the plague", and I feel like we need to consider that biosafety levels are just guidelines dictating what PPE and safety measures are required to prevent transmission in relation to potential danger to those who may contract it.

In this case, I believe that COVID is BSL-3 because it has aerosol transmission, which is trickier to handle than fluid transmission- not because it is equally fatal as anthrax or the plague.

Similar modes of transmission, not similar danger.

I could be wrong, so correct me if I am, but though I still believe it's *dangerous*- much in the way that I believe a wolf can be dangerous- a wolf is not equally dangerous as, say, a hippopotamous, even if they do both have four legs and tails.

Also, the CDC says BSL-2 labs may be sufficient for some COVID testing as well.

I wrote 1.1k words this week!

The investigation branch is slowly taking shape. I've always enjoyed reading crime thrillers, and am both excited and mildly stressed about trying to write my own now. Are the clues enough to captivate? The mystery obscure enough and yet not enough to become frustrating?

In any case, you will soon finally get a chance to have some time with the Blackbirds and/or Ezann! I might write Ezann's route first because I'm feeling her vibe more but we shall see if it holds up next week.

When I was a teenager and still on Neopets I was part of a pretty big Star Trek guild and eventually became part of its council, with the solemn duty of creating weekly polls. Well one day I created the poll "Which would win in a fight? Borg Cube or Death Star?". Naturally, since this was a Star Trek guild, the answer was overwhelmingly "Borg Cube", but someone did have the rationality to point out we were biased.

So I look up a pretty prominent Star Wars guild and message one of their council and ask them to poll the same question and get back to me in a week. They do, and naturally the fuckin geeks said "Death Star".

So then I look up a Stargate guild and messaged the lead council member, saying the same thing, and they get back to me almost immediately saying that the Death Star would immediately one-shot a Borg Cube but they would never be able to do it again to another Cube. And I took that wisdom back to my guild and we were mollified, and for one moment the Nerd World was peaceful.
