Oh Beom-Seok (Hong Kyung)

I recently watched "weak hero class 1", and fell in absolute love with Hong Kyung playing the role of Oh Beom Seok.

He portrayed the character in a very transparent yet subtle and delicate way 🥺

Beom Seok is very complex in the way that his actions are not explained at all. If you're not interested in his character you'll think "all of this because Soo Ho didn't follow him back on insta??" but he's so much more than that.

we know enough of his circumstances and why he began to feel this way, but we can't understand why he would go that far.

and we don't know the amount of trauma he has, but it's implayed that his actions are a reflection of what he learned growing up.

He was bullied in his past school, to the point he had to transfer to an other. and "raised" by a violent & uncaring adoptive father. he never had friends. and never once in his life, had he a caring figure around him to show him what is understanding and love.

He watches and replicate what he learned, without understanding that it's wrong.

Like when he asks Young Yi if she's getting out with Soo Ho in exchange of living with his grandma, it's meant to hurt her. But he genuinely think that friendships are a "give and take" deal and she must have given something to Soo Ho.

Or when he thinks Soo Ho's arm around his shoulders means that Soo Ho is looking down on him, because the bullies (he just barely escaped from his past school) did that very. same. thing. (Meanwhile Soo Ho is just an angel and doesn't have it in him to hurt him, consciously anyway.)

We could probably think that Beom Seok misunderstanding of Soo Ho could've been avoided by communication. But as Beom Seok himself doesn't know why he's doing all this, he couldn't have talked about it.

Beom Seok was a ticking time bomb, a result of years of hidden abuse, that was meant to implode at any moment. It couldn't be avoided.

Hong Kyung did a wonderful job at portraying the delicate nature of Beom Seok's changing emotions, as he run towards self destruction and tragedy like it's what he always wanted.

I actually love that the show doesn't explain or justify his actions and leave place to interpretation. the whole experience feels like a coming of age movie that went wrong.

Beom Seok's rage and despair. The way he is just. numb. And his heart is just a big wound that keeps growing until he's just unable to feel anything else but pain.

Favorite scenes :

After Soo Ho is in the coma and Si Eun is in his way to pay back. Beom Seok is just sitting there, in the class, as if he's given up on life. As if he's numb and doesn't seem to care anymore. Just waiting for the world to end.

His last scene :Beom Seok as he makes his way to the airport and leaves to the Philippines. The wide angle of his back as we don't see his face but we know he's crying his heart out because he knows he ruined the life of the only person he cared about, and won't ever see him again.
