It had been literal years since Yana recalled meeting that alternate of their father. Once in awhile they would recall the 'not Baba' that they had met with Kaz, and how much he seemed so similar to the parent they knew. Of course getting older gave the hybrid better understanding of what had happened.

But knowing it better just made their curiosity grow even more. How was that version of Baba different from the one they knew? Were they similar in some ways? He was still the guardian of the Master Emerald that much was certain.

These thoughts were clouding their mind as they stared the Master Emerald down. The teenager had agreed to watch over it for a few hours to give Knuckles some time away from it. They wanted to help protecting it. A choice they had made on their own since Knuckles didn't want to put the same responsibility he had onto his children.

Although right now Yana was thinking less of protecting it and wondered if they could use it. Surely they could just take a small peek at that 'not Baba'. Gently they placed a hand on it, giving a few murmurs. There was definitely a shift in energy as they closed their eyes and concentrated hard. Please lead me to that other Knuckles-

They had been putting their body weight against the emerald, which is why they suddenly stumbled when it disappeared. They fell onto a heap on the ground, a moment of confusion and then panic as they looked up and around them. This was not Angel Island. This was not the Master Emerald's resting place. Where in the world did they just end up?!

The twins' eyes widened as Hunter started to teleport the two of them. It wasn't hard for both of the kids to sense the Emerald's power as it started to work. As he made his request for them to come visit, each would give a nod, even if they weren't sure how they would do that at this moment.

The smoke was a startling sight, and both kids glanced around to take sight of it. Yana however quickly turned back towards the older echidna, opening their mouth to say something. But he was gone. Or rather they were gone. Yana's hand seemed to float there for a moment before it finally fell.

"There you two are!" The familiar voice caused Kaz to immediately let go of Yana and run to it.

"Baba!"

As Kaz ran towards the older Knuckles and quickly got scooped off his feet, Yana seemed to be staring down where Hunter had been. It had been a strange experience, but there was also a lot to consider. Even glancing over at their father, made them ponder even harder. That hadn't been Baba, but he looked and felt too much like Baba.

For now though they finally made their way down the stairs, quickly being picked up into Knuckles' arms and carried away safe and sound.

"...we'll get you home." He wasn't sure if he spoke that more for the kid's benefit, or his own. As if he was promising himself he would help them- in a way save them. This wasn't the two's world... It was his, and they didn't belong here...even if the fact pained his heart to consider. He returned the squeeze Yana gave him, careful not to apply too much pressure, just in case.

The echidna never broke eye contact as he raised a hand to the Master Emerald. The air began to electrify, crackling quietly as Chaos Energy flowed out from the massive gem. Hunt's quills slowly rose as he offered a reassuring smile.

"There you are..." It hadn't taken the Master Emerald long. It found its alternate part, allowing Hunt to read the energy embedded...the slight differences that told of its universe. Older than his own gem, by at least a dozen years- it made sense, given the kids before him. There was a faint glow to the echidna's eyes as he opened them cautiously, violet hues returning to the children before him. "...feel free to visit in the future, okay?" He wasn't sure they would- after all, he wasn't their 'Baba'..but it was a prospect the echidna found himself hoping for.

Green smoke sparked and cracked as it rose, slowly encompassing the two echidna-bat hybrids.

"Don't worry, you're safe." If he were younger, he probably wouldn't have said anything as he sent them off. The smoke fell away as the pressure in Hunt's hand disappeared- the Master Emerald's glow flickering. For the kids, it would probably feel as though they'd just been carried a few feet...but in reality, it was so, so much more than that.

"Who knew you had a soft side, Hunt?" The echidna crossed his arms, the soft smile he'd reserved for the children instantly replaced by a scowl.

"Tell anyone, and I'll smash your teeth in."

"Good luck...thanks for your help, big guy!" Hunt growled, a protest rising in his throat- but Node and Bless were gone in an instant, leaving him standing alone before the Master Emerald. He blinked- once, then twice.

"...cowards..." But the echidna had chuckled quietly to himself all the same, rolling his eyes as he moved to sit down once more- his back pressed against the glowing green gem. As he relaxed back to watch the sky, he couldn't help but hope the kids had gotten home alright... "...'soft side', my ass..." The echidna grumbled.

Humanity is obviously a central theme to DMC, but I have yet to see anyone mention how every single character within DMC is connected to each other with loss. I'd love to see a fanfic or even simple headcanons explore two or more characters' bonds over shared loss, especially ones that seem a bit odd.

Please, I beg to see Dante and Nico interact and see bits of Nell in each other. You guys, Nico and Trish bonding over demonology and devil arms, especially angus's research.

Idk how, but bring in Beryl. Have her relate to Lady over the overlaps and differences between their families. Beryl's dad went insane and died after possessing demonic power in an attempt to revive his late wife. While arkham killed his wife to possess demonic power and went insane and died. Not only that, they're both human devil hunters and have cool big ass guns.

(Ik Trish and Lucia dont out right lose family like most of the cast, but they still do experience loss. For Trish, it's her home and everything she knew until she left with Dante. In Deadly Fortunes, it's stated that she dedicates a lot of time to studying devil arms and demonology because she misses the underworld. For Lucia, she doesn't lose anyone, but she does have a loss of self after finding out she's a demon. Yall its a bit insane but parallels between Kyrie, Lucia and Trish with all of them having their worldview shattered. )

There was a small bit of curiosity on Yana's face, finally looking up at Ray. Their hands went to one of their quills, fiddling with it. "I'm Yana." They responded. "And my brother is Kaz. We're twins." Not that they were identical but the child didn't really know there was different types of twins.

"Um..." What was there to know? Yana wasn't even sure what to ask. "Um...!" No, there had to be something. "...Do you grow just corn?"

"Smart kid."

If he had known about avoiding strangers as a child, there was no telling where he would be today. There were some thoughts that crossed his mind, some of which were those he learned in the pediatric unit.

"Then let's make it so we're not strangers. What do you want to know?"

The offer was there, no time limit existed. Kids often enjoyed playing around on his fields. It wasn't something the squirrel worried about too much.

"I'll give you the introduction. My name is Ray."

lance as the blue paladin (former or current, doesnt matter) being a black widow. lance swallowing/killing his pride and letting himself be seen as nothing more than a flirt, an airhead, a blonde bimbo. lance being the teams secret weapon during meetings with planets to get them to join the coalition. lance sniffing out the right guard or advisor or royal that knows everything, getting them wasted and flirting for hours to get them to spill all the dirty secrets. lance being able to alert the team ahead of time if a planet is truly interested in joining the coalition or if they have an agreement with the empire and they lured voltron there as a trap.

lance swallowing/killing his pride and letting himself be seen as weak and stupid. lance playing up the airhead persona so their enemies don’t view him as a threat, them taking out the rest of the team first in their order of who would pose more of a threat to them and them always leaving lance for last bc they underestimate him. lance annihilating their enemies bc he actually is smart and strong and capable.
