the way the ghost writer completely misunderstood what the guardians are meant to be. they don't care about mortals being hurt, they dont give a damn about vampires killing people; the guardians care about keeping order. to them, that order includes vampires. it includes every supernatural creature no matter how dangerous they are. they stood by for thousands of years while the old ones ran wild and they never stepped in. these are the beings that tried to kill elena at eleven years old so that they could have a new guardian in their ranks. but the ghost writer just saw angels and thought they might actually care about protecting mortals, leading to the whole mess of the college plot and earth guardians.

"i've never seen you look like this before," he said, and she looked down at herself. her shoes and jeans were caked with mud, which was also liberally smeared over the rest of her. her jacket was torn and leaking it's down stuffing. she had no doubt her face was smudged and dirty, and she knew her hair was tangled and straggly. elena gilbert, immaculate fashion plate of robert e lee, was a mess. "i like it," stefan said, and this time she laughed with him.

it will never stop being funny to me that he's down so bad for her that even if she's absolutely a mess, he's there like yeah sign me tf up. i'd say get some self respect but he's valid tbh.

elena stepped forward and slapped him. she had no thought of doing it before she did it, and afterwards she could scarcely believe what she had done. but it was a good hard slap, with the full force of her body behind it, and it snapped damon's head to one side. her hand stung. she stood, trying to calm her breath, and watched him.

oh the things i could say. the way damon is one of the only characters in all of the books that provokes violence from her. the way that when interacting with stefan, she is always the one in control, yet with damon she acts impulsively and with no mind of herself. consequences don't matter to her with damon or stefan but for entirely different reasons; what other people think doesn't matter to her in regard to stefan. and the fact damon could hurt her doesn't matter with him. also this is the start of a very consistent trend where damon starts to anticipate her putting herself in danger to spite him or being fully prepared and able to hurt him.

themed headcanons.

elena loves her family. she loves margaret. it's an undeniable fact about her. but, there is also so much distance between her and them. we see it time and time again in the books; she loves them, but they can't see her vulnerable. elena would rather hide from them then let them see her cry. part of it, as most things do, comes back to her parents and the accident.

she tries to bury it, but i really do think she resents judith and robert, and even margaret in a way. from book one, we see her thoughts often coming back to her parents, but no one else really mentions them. she talks about her father showing her parts of the original house and how margaret is too young to remember them. one of the first ways she introduces robert, even inside her mind, is that he and judith are more present as parents to margaret than their parents ever will be. and we sort of see how that resentment creates division within the family, because when judith does try to take an authority role with her *cough* engagement reveal *cough* elena lashes out and there's this undercurrent message of "they would understand" to their arguments.

which isn't a fault on judith. we know judith was living far away and had very little involvement before the accident, she was forced to step in for a one year old and a traumatised teenager. and because of that she doesn't understand elena either, because she's only known who elena was after the accident. which is a whole other topic about how there is no one in elena's life, not bonnie and meredith, not stefan, that truly knows every part of her because she's always keeping secrets from everyone for what she perceives as their own good but that's neither here nor there right now -

so. yes. elena loves her family so much. but she lost the ability to connect on any deep level with them because they cant understand her and she can't forgive them, no matter how irrational it is, for not remembering or thinking of her parents.
