I dunno how me trying to do a character study fic on Sirius ended up with me writing a series from varying POVs about the way women are treated in HP/The Wizarding World (Centered around Andromeda, Narcissa, and Bellatrix) but I’m…Not mad at it??

Showing the struggles of women from both the POVs of women and men is so oddly interesting to me. The ways in which they’re interpreted, and sometimes not even acknowledged until they directly affect you in some way. The ways in which both women and men hold their misogyny, the ways in which both women and men hold their feminism…The ways they can be somewhere in-between

It’s all really interesting to write and I didn’t realize how thought provoking it’d be

10/10 would recommend writing a fic on gender inequality from the most wildly varying POVs ever it really helps you understand social dynamics and psychology

Also the Black Sisters are the perfect people for a wide range of POVs on it/responses/effects? Like??

Don’t remember the exact book slug club was prominent off the dome (I think halfblood prince?) but it was mentioned that Blaise was only in it because of her, and the fact that she married 7 men who all ended up dying mysteriously and leaving her massive fortunes, and she’s fabulously wealthy and unbelievably beautiful. You know what people don’t do enough?

Sirius who used to be the bright golden child. The beloved perfect heir. Charming and bright and outgoing. Beloved by all. So beautiful. So perfect. So shiny. He was a leader, not a follower. Never a follower. For all he argued with his mother, she felt proud. Because her boy was so strong and the perfect heir, even if she needed to keep him in check so that he would not cross her.

He never disappointed his family. Even if he was rebellious. Even if he caused mischief and minor problems. He never truly disappointed them. Because they’d forgive him for anything. Their perfect, beloved heir.

And then he was sorted into Gryffindor. And then he was fraternizing with the wrong sort. Running around causing problems with the Potter boy and a half-blood.

All of a sudden, he was disappointing them. And that was catastrophic. Because that wasn’t like their heir. Their perfect little doll. And suddenly the illusion shattered. Suddenly, he was flawed and imperfect.

And Sirius was thrown away. Like any broken doll. Every birthday before his twelfth he was showered with more gifts than he had any space or purpose for. On his twelfth, he only got Happy Birthdays from his friends.

When he went home, he was shunned. Mother was always angry. Punishing him. Isolating him. For disappointing her. For going off the rails as soon as he was let off leash.

All of a sudden, Sirius was second. All of a sudden, Regulus was doted upon. Regulus. The sheep. The one who followed. He’d never be a proper heir but he’d always been the perfect spare. Irrelevant. Not a challenge. Not entirely ideal.

All of a sudden, Regulus wasn’t following him blindly. Regulus was on their mother’s side. Regulus, who Sirius always protected and defended and took care of.

And then Sirius was alone. Isolated. Trapped in Grimmuald Place like a prison. Nothing to do. No one to talk to. He couldn’t act out. Couldn’t sneak around. The portraits on the walls would be oh so happy to rat him out.

A fallen angel, trapped in a cage.

And then Sirius went back to school. And Regulus was sorted into Slytherin. Hanging around with wannabe death eaters. Shunning his own blood.

All of a sudden, it wasn’t just Narcissa and Sirius’s childhood pureblood friends shunning him. But his brother, too.

And Sirius spiraled.

Like, can I get that?

I need it so much.

I’m talking about how he’s literally not allowed his own personality 😭

Like, people just apply Lily’s, Remus’s, and Sirius’s. That’s what I’m saying. Most of the time—Not all of the time—He’s not depicted with his own unique character and is just soft boy book reader, Sirius 2.0, Lily Remix, or Remus Disciple.

And I’m not saying Barty and Sirius don’t have parallels. I’m not saying Regulus doesn’t have parallels with Sirius and Lily.

But Parallels don’t equal personality and that’s what I’m talking about.

You’re free to characterize anyone how you want but all I’M saying is I’d like people to give the two of them unique, nuanced characterizations which often doesn’t happen. You can make characters have parallels without rinsing and reusing their personalities.

Characters should be unique. They can have SIMILAR personalities, but very often Regulus has a personality that’s literally the exact same as one of the three, either in the story and canonically, and often the character has to be tweaked so it’s not as obvious. But if he had his own unique character, it wouldn’t be an issue.

Petition for this fandom to STOP making Regulus just diet Lily/Remus/Sirius, and stop making Barty Sirius Jr.

Like LET THEM BE THEIR OWN CHARACTERS IF YOURE GONNA DEPICT THEM

Even adding to that—Voldemort’s closeness with Bellatrix, calling her ‘Bella’, something only family uses for her (or people from her household life house elves) and Snape besides him, as well as him not (To my knowledge) using nicknames for ANYONE ELSE—Him choosing Regulus/Kreacher for the task with the locket (Probably just because he thinks Regulus is blindly loyal but), Orion and Walburga (Despite not being death eaters themselves) letting their only real hope for an heir (Sirius wasn’t coming back) become a Death Eater in a war where death was possible, no matter how outnumbered the opposition was, and him trusting Narcissa that Harry Potter was dead without checking after her despite him evading death miraculously before.

Like…IM JUST SAYING. No one ever uses this. Like ever.

Imagine how much you can do with making Tom close with the Blacks (namely Walburga) narratively. Where are the fics that have this???

Not saying this is canon but it’s a fun little headcanon that can be used for fics that I’ve like never seen being utilized

Like imagine what that’d add to characters like Andromeda and Sirius, or even to Bella, Narcissa, and Regulus. The effect that had on Sirius + Regulus’s upbringings. It’d be such an easy way to add interest, angst, and conflict into fics. Because let’s be so real, Voldy Moldy was probably charismatic as shit and they were most likely shielded from his worst sides growing up. Meaning if they grew up knowing him (the runaways specifically) that’d create some interesting conflict. Because they don’t agree with his beliefs but some part of them is low-key brainwashed. But they still choose good in the end despite their bonds.

Personal headcanon, but (if there was no war) Lily and James are the type of couple whose house would’ve been the designated gathering place for like everybody. Friends and family are always coming in and out, Harry always has friends over for play dates, Remus crashes on their couch when times are tough, Peter brings a new obscure game over every weekend for game night, and Sirius probably has a key and basically lives there anyways.
