The kitchen was dim, lit only by the soft orange glow above the stove. It was well past two in the morning. Phillip and Mike sat across from each other at the large modern table.

Mike picked at his food with a fork, then looked up.

“Hey, do you like fireworks?” he asked.

Phillip blinked, caught off guard. “What? Fireworks?”

“Yeah,” Mike said casually. “You into ‘em?”

Phillip leaned back in his chair, a half-smile forming. “I mean, sure. I guess. Why though? Seems pretty random.”

Mike shrugged. “Just wondering.”

“Okay… yeah, I like them. Why?”

Mike's eyes fixed on Phillip. “Wanna spend the Fourth of July with me?”

Phillip chuckled. “That’s months away. Why are you already making plans?”

“Just say yes,” Mike said, leaning in slightly.

Phillip raised an eyebrow. “I mean, yeah, sure, I guess I could. But seriously, what’s with the urgency?”

Mike didn’t answer. His tone turned more serious.

“Just you and me. No party. No big crowd. Just us. Watching the city fireworks.”

The intensity in his voice made Phillip pause. “You’re being weirdly intense about this,” he said cautiously.

“Promise me you’ll do it,” Mike said, quieter now. “please...”

“Alright,” he said. “I promise.”

Mike smiled. It was small. Tired. But real.

July 4th, 2019

The hospital room was still. Machines clicked and beeped faintly in the background. Mike lay silent in the bed, motionless, pale. The steady rhythm of his breathing had stopped hours ago.

Phillip stood by the window, arms crossed, staring out into the night.

Outside, the Los Angeles skyline lit up with bursts of color — reds, whites, greens. Fireworks bloomed over the city, lighting the clouds and reflecting off the hospital glass.

He didn’t speak. Just watched.

Then one golden firework shimmered through the air, trailing down like glittering rain.

That one, he remembered Mike had pointed it out during new years, he said it was called Brocade. Phillip always thought it was funny how Mike had a favorite firework.

He closed his eyes. The memory felt too close, too sharp.

The show reached its finale — loud, bright, overwhelming — but Phillip barely registered it. When the last echo faded into the silence of night, he turned back toward the bed.

The folder with Mike’s hospital papers sat untouched. He reached for it absently and flipped it open.

This didn't explain the entire story of course. Just the parts in the story I kinda based this scene off of. Anyways I used Let Down by Radiohead as an inspo for this work.

I made this drawing finally. I had this idea for a while with my original character Arora / Aron. But it didn't turn out the way I was hoping. But despite being disappointed I finished it anyways lol. I based it off her lore. I'll tag a post that explains some of the ideas behind this.

I wish I could make it a tad darker. Not my proudest piece but I like the couch and her dress lol.

Here is a drawing I made. It took me about two days but I only worked on it for about half the day. The lighting is dark, don't mind that. It kinda adds to it in my opinion

My OC. He's a king in one of my fantasy stories, though I don't exactly have a name for him yet. Iv drawn him before but they weren't quite as good at this one. It took too long for it not to be better but I don't hate it.
