Rolling with Women I get asked all the time by the guys in my classes how to roll with women. My answer is pretty basic, just roll with them. But let’s dive a litter deeper. Now this is my perspective. Unfortunately, I have never been a woman, so this is just my opinion. 1. When a woman asks you to roll. Roll. Don’t say no just because they are of the opposite sex. That just makes you a jerkoff. 2. Don’t go light. Just use proper technique. Let’s face it. There are obvious differences between men and women. Strength, body structure, size, weight etc. The point is they still want to train. So train. 3. Don’t be a bully. There are such things as mat bullies. Doesn’t matter if it’s physical or verbal. Women don’t deserve it. Nor does anyone for that matter. You’re a bully? Bottom line you’re a piece of shit. 4. Watch your hands. In the beginning Jiu Jitsu may be a little awkward for anyone. It is probably the most intimate martial art there is. There is some real close contact. On occasion you may hit, push or brush up against some private parts. It does happen. It’s understandable and it is acceptable. Especially after you get used to and understand the art. 5. Finally, if you purposely touch, grope, make inappropriate comments or make any woman feel uncomfortable I will personally bounce your head off every wall before I throw you out. Hard Rolls When most people think of hard rolls, it’s really hard. Like 100% hard, attack, attack, attack. Is that a hard roll? I once asked my first Jiu Jitsu instructor Eric Silver about going 100%. I asked him how often he goes 100%? He replied, 100% of what? Then he explained further. There are many different ways to train 100%. You can attack 100%. You can go for one submission 100%. One sweep 100%. Work an entire match game plan 100% Defend 100% etc... So hard rolls are what you choice them to be. There are many aspects of this sport. You have to work them all. So yea I go 100% every time I train. Positional Sparring
In my experience and opinion positional sparring is the most important live training you can do. Positional sparring is another form of drilling. You can positional spar from any position in Jiu Jitsu. That goes for take downs also. For take downs you can do live “take down” only rounds. You restart after you or your training partner gets taken down. Another way is to be all offense or all in defense. You can even break down the take down in micro movements and drill or begin your positional sparring from that particular take downs micro position.
Now it doesn’t just have to be for take downs. You can start from mount, side control, back mount etc. You can be the offensive or defensive training partner. You may break it down even further by starting in a position and going for a certain submission, half into the submission, micro breakdown of submission etc...
How do you do these? You can go for time, like starting from a certain guard, try a certain pass and maybe have only 30 seconds to complete the pass. Then reset. How about only using one hand or no hands.
The combinations are literally endless. Remember you very rarely start on your knees or even get into that stupid position for that matter. I personally like to start in a defensive position before I start my sparring sessions.

Learn New Techniques Learning new techniques is as easy as going to class, especially for the the Jiu Jitsu student. Most schools have a few different instructors and they all have their own teaching style and the techniques they like or mastered the most. Going to different classes also helps in learning new techniques because of the variety of the other students. ie. Body types, weight, length, skill level etc.... And like most schools I’ve personally been to most students are more than happy to help you. Another way to learn new techniques are to visit other schools. The days of not training at other schools with different teams are of an old mindset and absolute bullshit anyway. Go visit and have fun! The only thing I suggest is call the other school beforehand and ask about a drop in. Schools differ in price, gi requirements etc. My favorite way to learn new techniques are to attend seminars. There are a lot of good guys out there. Most schools have their own web pages and may have a seminar schedule on their page. Finally, with the technology we have today there are many downloads out there. Instructionals by purchase or through YouTube are another great way to learn something new. Remember learning something new doesn’t have to be the newest fancy technique you saw on YouTube. The learning process never stops and you are always able to refine Jiu Jitsu techniques. Back Mount (bottom) I have to be honest. Getting back mounted absolutely sucks! Your training partner, if maintaining position, can pretty much submit you. How do we stop that? Here we go. Escapes: First keep your elbows in, chin down and watch your hand position. Your hands will help with grip fighting and possibly stop your training partner from getting the seat belt position, hand control and submitting you. (Choke or joint lock) Next if you are able to pick a side pick the side with your training partners over hook (over your shoulder). Get your back to the mat and start to face him. Always keep your hips high and start walking your feet away from him also. Once you escape you may get to neutral or a on top position. Defend from attacks: The hardest part about defending attacks from Back Mount is while you are defending you are also trying to escape and vice versa. Just like escapes, the defense of attacks is all about elbow, hand and head placement. You also have to defend your feet and legs with foot and leg placement. It is definitely something you have to experience to know. Back Mount (top/hooks in) Back Mount (top) by far is the most dominant position in Jiu Jitsu. You are literally behind your training partner. You can attack the upper and lower part of the body. Maintain position: One of the most popular ways to maintain the back position is to have both of your hooks (legs) over the top of your training partner’s legs controlling his hips and your arms over one of his shoulders and the other under his opposite armpit. (The seatbelt position) There are various other leg and arm placements. (ie. Half back, body triangle etc.) Your main job is not to let your training partners back on the mat to escape. Attacks: Attacks from the back Mount are endless. You have various arm chokes and lapel chokes. You can also set up arm locks and reverse triangle chokes. The combinations are vast. You can even attack the lower half of the body through set ups and transitions. Mount (bottom) When I started Jiu Jitsu bottom Mount was my biggest fear. I would have a panic attack every time I was mounted. So what did my instructor do? He made me start every roll on bottom of mount. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Escapes: Escapes go back to the Self Defense article in this series. The shrimp and bump and roll. They are the two most popular and high percentage escapes from bottom mount. There are many options to go to the neutral position, guard and top positions. Refer to Self Defense article for more. Defend from attacks: Defending attacks from bottom mount is mostly about hand and elbow placement. Hand placement helps to stop various collar/choke holds.
