An Introduction to Novelty Music
Howdy folks! Welcome to the Novelty Badger Tumblr Blog. You may be wondering what exactly this blog is about. Well, the hint is in the name; this account is about novelty music.
You may be wondering what novelty music is. I know that whenever I tell someone that it's my favorite genre, I'm often met with confused looks. This is shocking to me because I guarantee you that you've heard at least one novelty song throughout your life. Have you ever heard a Weird Al parody song? How about a viral internet song? What about a holiday classic like "The Monster Mash" or "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus"? I bet you have. Beyond that, I bet you enjoyed it, and you didn't even know you were listening to novelty music.
Really, a novelty song is any song built off a novel concept. This means that songs that use humor, word play, sound effects, or even something like an advertising jingle, are all novelty music. It can also be parody songs, like Weird Al's "Eat it" or Homer and Jethro's rendition of "Sixteen Tons" or even those really weird Minecraft parody songs on Youtube back in the day.
However, the novelty music I'm choosing to focus on in this account is mostly going to be the wholly original junk. This can be anything from "The Witch Doctor" to "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" to even "The Duck Song". We're going to be looking at a lot, and our starting point will be The Encyclopedia or Recorded Comedy Music.
This 108 song monster was created by Ray Stevens, a popular novelty musician and Country Music Hall of Famer. It's wonderful in every way and basically required listening for anyone who wants to be introduced to novelty music as a whole. Of course, listening to the original songs is very important, but the ERCM is a very good jumping off point.
I've been going through the process of illustrating every song on the ERCM and I'm currently on Dang Me. I'll be sharing these drawings alongside little descriptions of the song and its history, who it was originally by, and my opinions on it.
Along the way, as well as after the Encyclopedia Project, we'll be discussing songs not on the ERCM. I'll be doing a lot of cool stuff on here, so I encourage you to join me and learn something about these amazing songs that are often lost to the sands of time.
Here is the link to the Wikipedia article on novelty music if you want further information. It'll also provide an excellent list of all novelty songs to chart in the top ten, which really gets my leg thumping, and you may also find interesting.
If you have a favorite novelty song, I'd love to talk about it in the comments. I reply to all of them, so feel free to say hello.
Thank you for reading and have an nice day.
#FUN OMG#i need more novelty songs yo weird al bops but id love to hear what young al was listening to that got him so into comedy music#or the “demented” stuff that dr demento was playing on the radio
