Snack Mountain - “Strange Miracle”. New Single, New Video, and Tape Pre-order.
youtube
Artist: Snack Mountain (Reykjavík, Iceland) Album: Strange Miracle EP FFO: Tigers Jaw / Lucero / Rodeo Ruby Love
Last month we put out our annual free comp “Very Good Music Compilation” and gave you a little tease of the new Snack Mountain EP “Strange Miracle” with the first single “Both Arms Broke”. Now we’re back with the full details of the new release and, in all of it’s incredibly uncomfortable glory, we get to show you the video for that track. Huge shout out to Mike Adams for the video.
Tumblr media
Zack has been slowly working on the new EP  since late 2017 and has gradually been giving us peeks over the last year. For those of you familiar with Zack’s previous projects (Away With Vega, Rodeo Ruby Love) you’ll hear a lot of the same within these songs, but it’s definitely not just a rehash. Even when compared to the debut Snack Mountain release “The Magic In Me” this new EP feels like something totally new. We get elements of the same catchy power pop jams from before but toned down, a little sadder, and mixed with an almost country twang you would hear from bands like Lucero or Ratboys. As I said back in January, this some of the best work he has ever done.  The EP is out March 6th, but you can preorder (tapes or digital) right now from our bandcamp, or directly from Snack Mountain at https://snackmountain.bandcamp.com/
Tumblr media
Only 50 of these tapes will be printed, and as a bonus we are including Snack Mountain’s 2017 Christmas single “Home Alone”, but ONLY on the tape. Yes, it is a song about the movie Home Alone, yes it is incredible, and yes it will probably make you cry. So now is the time where you stop reading, and go order your copy before it’s gone forever. Do it. Now.
PREORDER HERE.

Very Good Music Compilation Vol. 4
Let me start this off by saying sorry we’re late. Doing an “end of the year” list nearly two weeks after the year ends feels weird but here we are. We’ve made it all of 13 days into the 2020 and so far Australia is on fire, and we’re on the brink of WWIII. Off to a pretty good start if you ask me. Whatever, man. Let’s greet the end together with a smile on our face. Click the link directly below, download the damn thing (which is 100% free as always), and let this be the soundtrack to the coming apocalypse.
.:VERY GOOD MUSIC COMPILATION VOL. 4:.
Tumblr media
I do this comp to help spread the word about music that Erich and I think you should be listening to. Every year 60 billion bands release 70 billion albums, and as an independent artist it can be hard to get people to just hear you. We’re not experts. We don’t pretend to be the voice of a generation or act like our opinion really means anything at all. This is just a list of music that connected with us throughout 2019 (and a few sneak peeks at things coming in 2020), and we think a you may find something new to enjoy as well. Most (not all) of this stuff you can find on Spotify or any other streaming services, which is great, but we really want to urge you to support these bands and artists in a more direct way. When you’re listening to these songs and you find something that really connects to you go buy the album directly (links included) from the band. Go see them live if they are in your town. Follow them on social media. Send them a message and tell them how much you like what they do. Annoy the hell out of your friends, and family, and coworkers, and strangers on the train about it. Streams on Spotify, Apple music, etc. are cool but things like that mean so much more to bands than most people realize. We’re sharing this music in the hopes that you’ll share it too. Just like last year the lineup is STACKED so I’ll keep these reviews as short as possible.

Artist: Jacky Boy (Bloomington, IN) Song: Get Along Album: Get Along / Swaying 7″ FFO: Supercrush / Rozwell Kid
First up we’ve got our pals in Jacky Boy. Jacky Boy was on the list a couple years ago with their debut album “On Good Terms With Everyone You Know” which was one of my favorite releases of 2017. I’ve been itching for new music from them ever since, and even though it’s only two songs it doesn’t disappoint. Both are bangers for sure, but “Get Along” in particular really stuck with me. This band is fun as hell, ultra catchy, and they are quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Artist: Hex Boyfriend (Austin, TX) Song: Pastel Album: Like Honey FFO: Tigers Jaw / Pixies
Hex Boyfriend was a wonderful surprise for me this year. Their debut EP “Like Honey” came out this past October, and I immediately fell in love. They have the attitude of your favorite punk band with the sensibilities of your favorite power pop band. It’s fuzzy, and chunky, and melodic, and dreamy, and fantastic from top to bottom.

Artist: Harm Less (Chicago, IL) Song: Loose Leaves Album: Safe’s Pace FFO: Cloudkicker / Pelican
I’ve been staring at my computer screen for the last ten minutes trying to think of the best way to describe Harm Less’s newest album “Safe’s Pace”, and the most accurate thing I can come up with is that it’s like going to a super heavy birthday party where all your friends are sharing unlimited pizza and giving high fives and hugging a lot. Yeah...that’s pretty spot on. Or if you want a less ridiculous description Bryan Kingsley, the mastermind behind the project, refers to it as posi-djent. That’s pretty accurate too. It’s huge, heavy, and unrelentingly triumphant. Put on your party hat, and get ready to have too much fun.

Artist: Terminal Crush (Fort Wayne, IN) Song: I Got Fat (husband&wife cover)
Album: To be titled husband&wife tribute album FFO: Pedro The Lion / Codeine / Red House Painters
I say this every single year in this write up, and I’m going to say it again now because it still holds true: Grey Gordon is one of the hardest working musicians I’ve ever met. To the point that it doesn’t make any damn sense. Any normal human being that churns out as much content as he does is going to at least occasionally drop a turd, but 20+ releases from 7 thousand different projects over the last decade and they are all bangers. His newest endeavor, Terminal Crush, is no exception. I’ve had the privilege of getting a sneak peek at the debut album, which is coming soon, and I can easily say it’s some of my favorite material he has ever made. It’s slow, beautiful, and utterly heartbreaking. However, sticking with the annual tradition he gave us something special for the comp this year, and it’s something we’ve been itching to announce for a few months now. If you lived in the mid-west circa 2005 - 2012 you’re probably at least casually familiar with the band husband&wife. We’ve been working on gathering up all of our favorite mid-west artists, and later this year New Noise will be releasing a yet to be titled tribute to the band.  Grey’s cover of "I Got Fat” is the first single from that album, and your first glimpse at what’s coming from Terminal Crush. We’re unbelievably excited for both.
As for now this song is only available on this comp, but keep an eye out for Terminal Crush’s debut album “Columbus” coming soon. In the mean time if you’re not familiar with husband&wife GET familiar: Bandcamp | Spotify

Artist: Aberdeen (Brooklyn, NY) Song: It Was Here Album: Downpour FFO: The Kraken Quartet  / Bent Knee
Months ago a friend sent me a link to check out this band, and I forgot about it like an idiot. Then a few weeks ago I was at the same friend’s house and this song came on while we were hanging out. Let me again stress the fact that I’m an idiot for forgetting about this the first time. Aberdeen’s debut album “Downpour” is horn driven, groovy, energetic, indie greatness.

Artist: Circus Trees (Marlborough, MA) Song: The Theft Album: Sakura FFO: Julien Baker / Snailmail
Circus Trees is a group of three young sisters that are quickly making a name for themselves in the post-whatever scene. This past October they made their way from MA to Indianapolis for the second annual Post. Fest to bring their brand of droney post-rock inspired sad jams to the mid-west. While I personally wasn’t able to make it out this year, I made it a point to check out all of the bands and this one really stuck with me. They have a remarkably mature sound for their age. I don’t know if that sounds condescending, but I don’t mean for it to. I just know that what they do is leagues above what most people put out when they’re in high school, and honestly they’re more creative and impressive than a lot of full fledged adult musicians I know.  They totally knocked it out of the park with their debut EP “Sakura”, and I’m anxiously waiting to see what they do next.

Artist: Snack Mountain (Reykjavík, Iceland) Song: Both Arms Broke Album: Strange Miracle FFO: Tigers Jaw / Lucero
Snack Mountain, which started out in 2015 with the EP “The Magic In Me” (an album all about Harry Potter), is back. Over the last few months frontman Zack Melton (formerly of Rodeo Ruby Love / Away With Vega) has been sharing songs from his newest venture “Strange Miracle” with me. I’ve been watching this guy play music since I was 16, that’s 17 years for those who are counting, and this is without a doubt some of the best work he has ever done. While we don’t get themes from a popular children’s book this time around, these indie vibes with a country twang are heartfelt, and beautiful. This coming March we will be working with Zack to release “Strange Miracle” both digitally and on tape. For now, this comp is the only place you can hear the new track “Both Arms Broke”.

Artist: No Heroics, Please (Muncie, IN) Song: From Seven to Four Album: TBA FFO: Red Sparowes / (early) Explosions In The Sky / GY!BE
This is another one we’ve been excited to share with you for quite some time now. During their short life (around 2005 - 2007) No Heretics, Please put out what is to this day some of my favorite post-rock songs across two albums. This was back in the days of Myspace and Purevolume so any trace of those songs on the internet has been all but erased. This was post-rock that differs a lot from what so many in the scene are doing today. Let me first say that, being in a post-rock band myself, there really aren’t many bands in the genre that I DON’T like. Whether you’re a ground breaking band that is experimenting with the sound and turning it into something new or the ten-thousandth band doing the same old crescendo-core I more than likely dig it.  But No Heroics, Please was something special. They were one of the first bands that got me into post-rock and I’ve circled back to these songs consistently ever since they broke up. They were dark. They were atmospheric without relying on an smorgasbord of effects pedals.  They were were artists in every sense of of the word, and with the genre thriving the way it is right now I have no doubt that if they came out as a new band today they would be at the top of everyone’s list. That said, I’ve been chatting with the guys over the last few months and later this year we will be releasing their entire catalog in one collection both digitally and on tape. To all my post-whatever fans and friends, you do not want to sleep on this.

Artist: L.I.B. (Indianapolis, IN) Song: NOW YOU PAY Album: Death Is Expected FFO: Man Is The Bastard / Outbreak / Crossed Out

Artist: Stalemate (Cleveland, OH) Song: Bummer City
Album: The Heat of the Sun FFO: Heart Attack Man / Mom Jeans / Weezer
Stalemate was a recommendation from our good pal Chris “Peapod” Daher over at On The Radar Podcast, and goddamn if it isn’t one of my favorites on this list. Their album “The Heat of The Sun” is packed full of chunky power pop jams that give me life. Part 90s throw back and part emo revival (yeah I hate that term too but it fits) this album is solid from top to bottom. This was a very pleasant surprise.

Artist: Indisposed (Chicago, IL) Song: Mason Kid FFO: Super Unison / United Nations / Converge
Fuck. Me. Indisposed is good. Post-hardcore is my go to. It’s my genre of choice. Most of the bands in my life that have inspired me to make music myself are post-hardcore bands. That said, there really aren’t a ton of bands that are still doing it and there are even fewer that are currently doing it well. But about once or twice a year I stumble upon a band that just really nails it. This year the big one for me is Indisposed. Their first EP came out in 2017, this single was released this year, and everything they’ve put out so far is just so solid. There is noticeable influence from a lot of the big classic names but it doesn’t just feel like a rehash. They’ve really done a great job creating their own sound. For all my fellow post-hardcore dorks, this is the band to keep an eye on. Look out for new music coming soon.

Artist: Schweikhardt (Bloomington, IN) Song: Broken Album: Keep Me In FFO: David Bazan / The Appleseed Cast / Colour Revolt
Frank Schweikhardt is one of the most talented human beings I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing, and he continues to blow me away with every new piece of music he releases. “Keep Me In” is no exception. This record is beautiful, and nostalgic, and heartbreaking, and uplifting, and absolutely flawless. If you ignore everything else on this list, do yourself a favor and let this be the one you don’t skip.

Artist: Cloudkicker (Columbus, OH) Song: Blackwing
Album: Unending FFO: Tesseract / Scale The Summit
Ben Sharp is a gift to the world. Dealing in instrumental music as much as we do there was no way that this album wasn’t going to be included this year. “Unending” is his first album in 4 years and it was definitely worth the wait. He brought the classic Ben Sharp beefy tones that we’ve all grown accustomed to over the years, but it’s anything of a repeat of his previous work. This is, in my opinion, by far the most dynamic and experimental album he has put out to date, and it’s in my personal top 10 for 2019. The best part is it’s one of his few releases that you can actually buy a physical copy, and the record itself is truly beautiful.

Artist: Pray For Sound (Boston, MA) Song: Waves Album: Waves FFO: sleepmakeswaves / Meniscus
A few weeks back someone wrote a review that referred to Pray For Sound’s newest album “Waves” as something along the lines of “post-rock that sounds like beige wall paper”. Now, I know that everyone has different tastes, and I believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion. With that said, the person that wrote that review is, respectfully, a punk ass dork with no friends who probably thinks that ketchup is spicy. The post-rock scene is on fire right now, and I would argue that “Waves” is at the tippy top of the list for releases in the genre in 2019. They’ve always killed it in this game, but this time around they weren’t afraid to get weird. This album grooves so hard, and every time you think you know the direction it’s heading it smacks you in the mouth and takes a hard left turn. This is anything but beige wallpaper. It’s more like coloring on the walls with a 120 Crayola pack, and when your mom finds out she doesn’t send you to your room she says, “GODDAMN, KID THAT’S FUCKING SICK”, and then she takes you out for ice cream.

Artist: Plateau Below (Chicago, IL) Song: The Manatee Album: The Bird Speaks! FFO: Modest Mouse / Animal Collective
Plateau Below is weird. Plateau Below is fun. Back in 2014 their first album “Still Paradise” was released, and I didn’t listen to anything else for weeks. They are back with their newest release “The Bird Speaks!” and it’s happening again. Weird ass spazzy folk rock with a dash of punk energy, every time they release something new I know it’s going to be a good time.

Artist: Exterminate All Rational Thought (Fort Wayne, IN) Song: Djentleman Album: Chromatophores FFO: Scale The Summit / The Contortionist
A few years back my pal Travis Harvey over at Village Green Records sent me a bandcamp link to check out a noodly prog band called Exterminate All Rational Thought. It was rad as hell. Then last month my “facebook memories” dropped that link on me again, and I was very happy to see that these dudes had a new album out. “Chromatophores” is the band’s newest effort and it does not disappoint. Just like 2012′s “Lining The Streets” and 2014′s “Antithesis”, this new album is a captivating dynamic adventure from start to finish.

Artist: Metavari (Fort Wayne, IN) Song: Flux (Cerulean) Album: Soft Continuum FFO: S U R V I V E / Lower Case Noises
Ten years ago Metavari released their debut album “Be One of Us and Hear No Noise”. It was and continues to be the definition of a masterpiece. Last month Nate Uetsch and company revisited it to create something new and equally beautiful.  If you know the story of Metavari and former bassist, Ty Brinneman, you know this is a deeply personal project, and they can tell you about it far better than I can.
From Metavari’s bandcamp:
Soft Continuum is the 10th anniversary edition of 2009's Be One of Us and Hear No Noise. This is an exercise in rediscovery; a 26-minute reinterpretation of the original recordings. Minimally composed, but proudly featuring every member who has ever been involved in the project. Amidst the insanity of life and Ty Brinneman's (founding member, bassist) diagnosis with pleural mesothelioma, he and Nathaniel David Utesch were able to write more than half of the record together for the first time since 2015. Experimentation in the recording process utilizes MIDI Bass software to perform hardware synthesizers in real time in addition to typical bass guitar tracking.
This record is for Ty Brinneman. "Despite distance and season." All     proceeds/donations above cost go to Ty and his family. For more information about Ty's cancer treatment and how you can help, visit  www.gofundme.com/f/ty-brinneman-cancer-treatment
I have been in love with this band for years. Not just because they make incredible music, but also because they are the sweetest group of humans you will ever meet. Ty in particular is the most stand up of dudes. Click that link and check out more of his story and see how you can help.

Artist: We Love You (Marion, IN) Song: Edge Vacation Album: Forges / We Love You split FFO: Brand New / Sorority Noise / Into It. Over It.
Our pals in We Love You are at it again and better than ever. This band is something really special. They are equal parts ambient and aggressive, and a great blend of emo, hardcore, and shoegaze. For those of you who, like myself, have been looking to fill the void that Brand New left when the world realized that Jesse Lacey is kind of a terrible person, We Love You is the band to scratch that sad, gloomy itch.

Artist: Clint Breeze and The Groove (Indianapolis, IN) Song: TheeBop Album: Arrival FFO: Badbadnotgood / The Roots / Sons of Kemet
Clint Breeze and The Groove dropped another album on us back in April, and it is pure fire. Equal parts hip-hop, R&B, and Jazz, “Arrival” doesn’t have a single wasted second on the whole album. Carringtion and company keep getting better with every new release. This is a lyrical and musical masterpiece, and goddamn if that album cover isn’t one of the coolest I’ve seen all year.

Artist: Coastlands (Portland, OR) Song: Morristown, AZ (Ft. Amulets) Album: Milieu III FFO: Stars of The Lid / William Basinski / Tim Hecker
Back in May we teamed up with Coastlands to release the third installment of their ambient series “Milieu III”. Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, this 3 song EP is a dark, yet hopeful journey and a solid jumping on point for new listeners. This track in particular which features the ambient genius, Randall Taylor (better known as Amulets), is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard from the band. Tapes are almost sold out so jump on them while you still can.

Artist: Stone Irr (Los Angeles, CA) Song: All We Want Anymore Album: Performance FFO: Amy O / Humbird / Thom Yorke
Stone Irr’s (yes, it is his birth given name) new album “Performance” is simply great. This near perfectly arranged pop record is symphonic, packed full of haunting melodies, and ebbs in flows in a way that I can only describe as tidal. This almost feels like a record that the Beatles would put out if they were still making music today. I feel like a lot of pop rock bands try to make claims like that, but in this case it’s actually true. “All We Want Anymore” was a perfect first single for the record, and it just so happens it had one of the coolest videos I saw 2019.

Artist: Ranges (Bozeman, MT) Song: Demagogue Album: Babel FFO: The End Of The Ocean / The Echelon Effect
What can you say about Ranges? They are true masters of their craft. They have their sound down to a science, and every album is bigger, and bolder, and more adventurous than the one before. Babel is an monster. The record has been out for just over 3 moths and the vinyl is already on it’s second printing.  It is a dark, heavy, flawless example of everything that post-rock bands should strive to achieve.

Hank Wooton (formerly of Autumn Androids) has been quietly working on his new solo album “Winter’s Bane” and “Overboard” is our first glimpse at what he has in store. This song is a piano driven slow burn with a huge payoff, and if it’s any indication of what the rest of the album is going to sound like you’re all in for a treat. Hank is an incredibly talented musician, and I can’t wait to hear more.

Artist: Jeaux Seph (Indianapolis, IN) Song: Easy Enough (feat. William Stack) Album: Reluctant FFO: Depeche Mode / Symmetry / S U R V I V E
So, this album just got introduced to me tonight and thank god for late submissions. I had a really hard time with the “for fans of” part of this one. Jeaux Seph has something incredibly cool with “Reluctant”. It’s dark, and super moody, and just...really fucking cool. Electronic jams with synthwave vibes and maybe a hint of R&B.  I’ve actually been listening to this in the background all night as I’m writing this, and I’m still having kind of a hard time defining it but it is thoroughly impressive. Shout out to Jake Amrhein from Stranger Sex for dropping this one one me.

Artist: Noise, Idaho (Gainesville, FL) Song: Taoist! Taoist! Taoist! Album: Palimpcyst FFO: Wojciech Golczewski / Stars of The Lid
Chad Serhal is another person on this list that I have been watching make music for years. Those familiar with his work should be ready for something completely different with his newest project Noise, Idaho. He has traded in his guitars, and smooth folky voice for synthesizers and field recordings. I’m a sucker for ambient music and this album goes to some very cool places. Cool, synthy, ambient drones for days.

Artist: Rival Colors (Boston, MA) Song: New Haven Album: Wildflower FFO: As Cities Burn / The Almost
Rival Colors feels like they would have fit in really well with the glory days of Tooth and Nail and Solid State records. “Wildflower” is a solid addition to the indie alt-rock group’s catalog. It’s punchy, and energetic, and I’ve had it on pretty steady rotation since I came across it a few months back. There are a lot of really cool moments here.

Let me preface this one by saying that I don’t know anything about Jazz. I know that I like some jazz, and I don’t like some jazz and my knowledge of the genre pretty much stops right there. That said, The Tucker Brothers are the greatest jazz group in the history of the genre and you can’t change my mind. Jokes aside, this really is an incredible album. It’s been rad as hell to see these guys grow over the years, and this album really is a reflection of that growth. This body of work is truly inspiring, and I couldn’t be more proud of these fellas. “When Souls Meet” specifically is a stunningly beautiful track that gives me chills every time I hear it.

Angel-Maker is back, this time with a full band and teamed up with Lowfaith out of Denver to give us a gloomy, gothic, darkwave gift. The 2018 demo that we featured last year was great, and this split is even better.  Frontman, Chris Nelson, really is a jack of all trades. We shared the first single from this EP on the comp last year, and while it seems like it took forever for it to finally get here it was worth the wait. Withered Winds falls somewhere between post-metal and post-hardcore, and they killed it here. It’s heavy and fuzzy and everything you could ever want from a band like this. The dudes worked hard and it paid off in a big way. Don’t sleep on this.

Artist: Council, Idaho (Brooklyn, NY) Song:  Cindy Album: 2008 FFO: The Mountain Goats / Neutral Milk Hotel
Circa 2005 - 2008 Carl Stovner made music in Indiana under the name Council, Idaho. This is when he wasn’t on guitar duty for the then super popular Arrah and The Ferns. This was at a time when folk music was THE thing. Every other dude with a guitar was trying really hard to be Conor Oberst, and most of it just kind of felt trite and played out. Council Idaho, however, did not fall in to that crowd. It never felt like Carl was putting on a show. It always felt honest and genuine. There was something magical about seeing him play, and a decade later that still hasn’t worn off for me. This project will always hold a special place in my heart, and it makes me so happy to see him put this collection of previously unreleased demos out into the world.

Artist: Brazil (Muncie, IN) Song: The Author Album: The Author EP FFO: The Mars Volta / The Sounds of Animals Fighting
In 2004 Brazil released their seminal album “A Hostage and The Meaning of Life”. They had a follow up in 06 titled “The Philosophy of Velocity” which was equally great, but shortly after that they disbanded and it’s been mostly quite since then. That is until this year when the surprised us by quietly dropping “The Author” on bandcamp back in October. These two previously unreleased tracks fully capture the magic of what the band was in their prime. It’s a bittersweet feeling getting to hear something new after so long while also knowing that there is no more on the way, but we’ll take what we can get.

Artist: Pillars (Indianapolis, IN) Song: Black Prayer Album: Cavum FFO: Pelican / Caspian
Pillars newest album “Cavum” is one of my personal favorites of 2019. A follow up to 2017′s “Of Salt And Sea”, this album hits harder, and takes a deeper dive into darker side Pillars signature post-metal sound. The last couple of years have taken the band to Europe where they played Dunk! fest in Belgium, and back state side where they helped put together the first two editions of Post. Fest. These dudes are unstoppable.

Artist: Slow Crush (Belgium) Song: Sway Album: Ease (Deluxe Edition) FFO: Holy Fawn / My Bloody Valentine
I was lucky enough to catch Slow Crush on their west coast tour last year, and I have been hooked ever since. Warm, super fuzzy shoegaze jams to die for, and to top it all off they are the most lovely people on this Earth. Ease was a 4 song EP originally released in 2017, but this year they reissued it with new artwork, bonus live tracks, and new editions of the vinyl and CD’s. Check it out while you still can!

Artist: Kosatka (New Haven, CT) Song: Pale Fire Album: Colossus FFO: Lost In Kiev / Oh Hiroshima
Kosatka is the solo project of Madison Roseberry, and his first EP “Colossus” is a sludgy post-metal dream. This is a great freshman release for the project and it has had a huge response in the post-whatever scene. My only hope is that he gets a full band together some day so I can eventually see this towering wall of doom live.

OKAY! That’s it. Huge thanks to all the people that agreed to be a part of this thing. This gets bigger every year, and the line up this time around is truly incredible. Just in case you managed to miss the link to download the thing HERE IT IS ONE MORE TIME. It is now 4 am and, as you can probably tell by the 6 billion typos that are probably riddled throughout this whole thing, my brain is finished and it is time for bed. As always thank you for reading and listening, and again if you found something you liked make sure you find a way to support these bands.

The On The Radar Podcast: Mixed Signals
Recently, we started a new specialty show on the podcast.  We took past guests on the podcast, put them in a room, with a theme, and talked about all the nitty gritty of the music world, process, and development of this art form.
The core of this podcast has always been featuring up and coming artists and bands. However, being a guy who has always been fascinated with music but doesn’t have a musical bone in his body, I want to dig deeper on WHY someone does it, but not only that, but why are these acts get to where they get, and why one act over another does something a certain way and it works, but the same act does the same thing and doesn’t?  Does your head hurt yet? So what I did is set up a panel of past guests, we stuck them in a room at Bigfoot Studios, and talked close to 2 hours on what is determined as success for a musician.
The next Mixed Signals episode will be happening in June with a different subject with more past guests jumping back in on a different subject.

The On The Radar Podcast: PILLARS
The story on how I got into Post-Rock was just by accident, and yet, it’s now one of my favorite genres of music. This is the story of not only the Indianapolis band PILLARS, but how I came to love Post-Rock.
It is a fascinating world what Post-Rock is. Have you ever realize that it is more than just instrumental, it’s more than “a band without a singer” (even some Post-Rock acts do have one), and it’s more than just “noise”.  Post-Rock takes the same amount of energy, thought process, and execution that other genres have.  What’s also cool about the genre is the range it can be; “post” music ranges from anywhere from ambient to even (what I’ve seen called) slow-core music. The genre might not be as popular in the states but it has a major following across the world and the guys in PILLARS are not only waving the flag of this genre in the states, but bringing people together with the POST. Festival. I first got the spark to find out more about Post-Rock with our episode with Detroit’s own MAN MOUNTAIN.  It was a cool experience and started checking out more acts they recommended or played with, but the flood gates open when I got to experience the Post. Festival first hand. All the different acts, all the different styles, all the environments they created with their music was just awe inspiring. One of the acts, one the people behind the festival, that I loved was PILLARS. I talked in depth on how blown away the POST. Festival was, and my time helping promoting it but also helping with a “Post Fest Pop Up” show in a neighboring city from where I reside, but the guys in PILLARS share very “dark” points of view and how that shaped their upcoming album (currently in production). The On The Radar Podcast: Sir Cadian
With close to 25 years of combined experience, a new act from Toledo, Ohio called SIR CADIAN joined us on the podcast recently.
Bands come and go all the time. Sometimes they “make it” (whatever that is defined as” and some just go by the wayside. However, many choose to leave music for a more stable life, and that’s fine, but do they ever REALLY leave? Is the WANT to fill the hole that music left easily filled, and if one decides to go back to that world, how will this time be different? Those are the questions that the guys in Sir Cadian answer in their own experiences during this episode.  The guys were very methodical in their releasing information about being a band, getting music and music videos out, and just NOW (at the time of this writing) playing 1 show as “Sir Cadian”. They are biding their time, polishing everything, and making sure when they debut fully as an act, there is no growing pains about it. I can respect that.
2 songs from their album DEADHIVE were done at Bigfoot Studios in Toledo, Ohio, and a very interesting conversation about being a band (and more) on this episode of the podcast.

The On The Radar Podcast: Boys Of Fall
My first recorded 2019 episode for the podcast is here, and it’s with the pop punk group out of the greater Michigan area BOYS OF FALL
I begin my first recording of 2019 with this pop-punk group, and first off, this is the first defined pop-punk group I’ve interviewed for the podcast (I’ve done emo, folk, melodic hardcore, post rock, alternative, and more, but never this).  I feel that pop-punk gets a bad wrap.  I don’t know why it does; it could be bands like A Day to Remember, Asking Alexandria, or The Word Alive that came about during the rise of Nu-Metal, it could be the subject matter (don’t need you or this town), or it could be the stereotypical “LOOK” of them (google it if you’re bored). However, Boys of Fall was fascinating to me to interview.  Not only did I know the guitarist Dan Quigley (yes that’s his real name, and what a great dude!) from our Toledo, Ohio music scene, but this band just sounded really tight and put together well. This band through a few changes, and almost to the point that they took a hiatus and had no plans in coming back. However, the band found the sound they were happy with (and not comparing their sound to anybody else) and even got signed to InVogue Records in late 2017, with an EP and a full album BETTER MOMENTS released the following year. The person listening to the music in their speakers or headphones may not realize what all goes into making that product, and where the artist or band’s headspace was when doing it.  That’s why I do this podcast, is to show that and talk about that, especially in this episode that you learn more about the creative process. Enjoy this episode on YouTube below, including also 2 acoustic songs they recorded in one of our studios, and follow us on all major podcast platforms and social media.

The On The Radar Podcast: Fate’s Got A Driver
WELL HELLO THERE VIEWERS! A quick little introduction for all of you, my name is Chris, you can call me Peapod (mostly everyone else does), and I’m from Toledo, Ohio.  I’m a radio professional and part time on air personality in the city for about 10 years, however, when not providing some sort of radio entertainment, I host a podcast that features interviews and performances coming to, through, and from the Midwest; It is called “The On The Radar Podcast”.
The podcast can be found on most major podcast platforms, and episodes come out AT LEAST twice monthly.  However, something special for all the NNE followers, is that I’m going to flex my writing muscles, and give you a couple of two cents and special behind the scenes look at the guests of the podcast.  We start 2019 with the band Fate’s Got A Driver. FGAD was formed in the summer of 2018 after guitarist, and founder of the band TAKING BACK SUNDAY Eddie Reyes decided to leave the band he formed.  While on the surface it looked like Eddie left on decent terms to deal with his issues (and some of those issues are mentioned in the episode), it didn’t sound like it was AS DECENT as you might think.  It’s unfortunate when band members, especially FOUNDERS of said band, leave a project, but it’s nothing new in this musical world, and nothing new in art.
However, Eddie felt that he needed to start anew, and that is when he met up with musician Michael Drum to form the project of Fate’s Got A Driver. I got to witness this band, on their first run of shows on December 14th in Sandusky, Ohio, at HALO LIVE which is the music venue within The Mohawk Studio which is also within a renovated church that has been built since the 1840s! If you’re into a lot of the post hardcore music, intense and quiet dynamic vocals, and an old school Taking Back Sunday vibe, you’ll enjoy Fate’s Got A Driver.  Eddie does great on guitar, Michael great on side vocals, and their lead singer is something else when it comes to energy to the band.  I hope to see great things in 2019 from this band, and you can check out their debut EP now wherever you get your music. You’ll also enjoy a special acoustic version of their song “Sad Song” they recorded JUST FOR the podcast (which I always enjoy when bands debut or do something exclusive to us). Thanks for listening, and to learn more (or to follow) The On The Radar Podcast, click here

Very Good Music Compilation Vol. 3
Alright nerds. It’s that time again. That time when we celebrate the fact that we spent another 365 days on a rock shooting through space at 65,000 mph and somehow we’re not dead. WOO! With that celebration comes our annual list of our favorite bands and the music they gave to us over the last year. This past year was goddamn nuts for music. So many bands and artists put out so many incredible albums.
A few bits of news though before we jump in. New Noise has been around since roughly 2006. I started just to have a name to attach to shows I booked, and eventually used it as a name to release music under. Up until now that has only been my own music, but I’ve always had plans to expand that, and treat it as more of a label. That is something that is finally starting in 2019. This year we will start a series of tape releases that focuses on reissues and previously unreleased albums. Joining me in this is my good friend Erich Krueger. You may also start seeing reviews and other bits and pieces and odds and ends from him on here. Our first planned release is for Indianapolis based band And Agora. The first single from the upcoming album is on this list but we’ll save that for later. Also, we are teaming up with with Chris Daher, AKA Peapod, and his podcast “On The Radar podcast”. Chris interviews bands that tour thorugh, drive through, or otherwise find themselves existing in the mid-west. It can be found basically anywhere you can find podcasts but you can check out the home page right HERE. Episodes come out twice a month and starting this month we will be featuring episodes here along with Chris giving us a little behind the scenes action. Coming next week he has the band Fate’s Got A Driver, featuring founding member of Taking Back Sunday, Eddie Reyes.
Alright enough of that. Let’s get to the dang music. Click below to get to the comp.
::Very Good Music Compilation Vol. 3::
Tumblr media
As always this comp is 100% free, and this year we have quite a few exclusive tracks. Meaning you won’t find them on Spotify, or iTunes, or any other bandcamp page. Also, while the past editions have mainly contained tracks from the previous year, this volume can be separated in to two specific categories: 2018 releases, and previews from upcoming 2019 releases. We have 30 songs total this year so I kept the reviews short. Click the link, download the dang thing, and let’s jump in.
Tumblr media
Artist: Flip House (Shanghi, China) Song: Lorelai Album: s/t FFO: Glocca Morra / The Promise Ring
Flip House is a mid-west emo band, from China, via Indiana. You read the correctly. Listening to this album I’ve struggled to figure out what to compare it to. At times I think kind of something like The Promise Ring but angrier. Other times my brain goes to The Amazing Transparent Man but with better lyrics (seriously good lyrics). My favorite was a friend who called it Joyce Manor for adults. No matter what connection you make to it, it’s really good.

Artist: Ratboys (Chicago, IL) Song: GL Album: GL (Topshelf Records) FFO: Lucero / Smidley / Kississippi
A few months back I went to see Foxing while they were on tour supporting their new album “Nearer My God”.  Opening up for them were Kississippi, and a band I had never heard of before, Ratboys. I was sick as hell that night, and honestly I was ready for Foxing to just get up and play so I could go home. I was being a doofus. Ratboys ended up actually being my favorite part of the evening. Ultra fun indie/punk vibes with a country twang. GL (Good Luck) is their most recent EP and a follow up to 2017’s GN (Good Night). It’s short, sweet, and again, ultra fun. Check out the full EP and BONUS the super rad 8-Bit version they released in September.

Artist: Isles (San Francisco, CA) Song: The Long Goodbye Album: Remnants FFO: Pelican / Scale The Summit
If you follow this blog at all you know we lean heavily toward post-whatever related music, most of the time that music being instrumental. I know it’s not for everyone. Everyone who plays instrumental music knows it’s not for everyone. That said, I feel like Isles newest album “Remnants” has a little bit of something for everyone. I do a “for fans of” line in every one of these reviews, and I had a hard time with Isles because they solidly have their own sound. Guitar driven, really cool grooves, and tone for days. They’ve been at it for a few years now, but I think this is where they really hit their stride. This album is something special.

Artist: Friend Army (Los Angeles, CA) Song: Foxes Album: Cheap Therapy FFO: Sorority Noise / Surfer Blood
This one snuck up on me at the very last minute, which is exactly why I don’t put out our end of the year list until the day after the end of the year. “Cheap Therapy” is the debut EP from LA based Friend Army. For all of you mid-westerners reading this it’s fronted by Bryant Fox, formerly of husband&wife and Alexander The Great, and it has a lot of those ATG feels. 6 songs clocking in at just over 21 minutes, packed with killer melodies, super crisp guitars, and a million little moments that make you want to throw your fist up in triumph. It’s always awesome to see a band nail it on their first outing. Right now you can stream the whole thing on soundcloud, and keep an eye out for it to be on bandcamp soon.

Artist: and agora. (Indianapolis, IN) Song: Wolf In A Wool Sweater Album: Finishing Fragments (New Noise Entertainment) FFO: LITE / Counterfit / At The Drive In
We first made a quite little announcement about this back in the beginning of December. and agora. is an instrumental project from Orrin Price, Caleb Crockett, and Ben Walker. Post-rock feels, really progressive, had to define, they wrote and recorded their first and only album during the early 2000’s, finished it in 2008, and with the exception of a few close friends and family never released it. It’s a super guitar driven, at times mathy, always incredibly energetic masterpiece. I was actually roommates with Orrin for a good portion of time when they were working on these songs, and I can honestly say that when it comes to their craft they are some of the most passionate dudes I’ve ever been around. I’ve personally had this album off and on heavy rotation for years, and I’m pleased to say that we are finally bringing it out of hiding and unleashing it on the world as New Noise’s next cassette release later this spring. Stay tuned! More and agora. coming soon: Bandcamp

Artist: New Terrors (Indianapolis, IN) Song: Amethyst Album: Amethyst b/w Never the Night FFO: Homecomings / Washed Out
New Terrors is a name that I’ve seen pop up here and there a few times over the last couple of years, but for whatever reason I glossed over it. Back in October I realized that it is the most recent project from Burke Sullivan (husband&wife, Away With Vega, Owlsburg), and I’ve been kicking myself for not jumping on this earlier. It’s okay though because I have multiple albums and ep’s I get to go back through now. This past fall New Terrors released a two song single, and I had both tracks on repeat for about a week straight when I first heard them. Somewhere between the chillest chillwave and the dreamiest dreampop, these songs are warm, and vibey, and one of the most sonically pleasing things I heard in 2018. Keep an eye out for more this year.

Artist: Coastlands (Portland, OR) Song: Bottomfeeder Album: The Further Still (Dunk! Records) FFO: Caspian / pg.lost / If These Trees Could Talk
Coastlands is what happens when three dudes set out to form a post-rock band and do everything right. Their new album “The Further Still” is proof of that. I’ve been lucky enough to becoming friend with these guys over the last couple of years, and watching them continue to grow and improve with every new thing they do as a band has been an absolute pleasure. This new album takes a slight step away from the atmospheres and ambience of their previous album “To Be Found”. Those moments are still there, but they’ve switched their focus on this album to much more driving, riffy movements while using those softer moments to connect the pieces. In terms of the physical record itself, this album is beautiful. By far the best quality vinyl and packaging I’ve seen on a record in a long time. The fine folks over at Dunk! are doing good work. And speaking of records, they’re almost sold out so get on it while you can.

Artist: Glowing Brain (Oakland, CA) Song: Wizard Wand Album: s/t FFO: Motorhead / Coliseum
Over the past year I got really into collecting tapes. A few months back I posted on Facebook asking any friends who recently put out their music on tape to send me a link. Enter James Lyter, and a link to this absolute banger. Glowing Brain’s debut self-titled  album is noisey and thrashy as hell.  For those of you in the mid-west this is a band that 100% would belong on Dude Fest if it was still a thing. For those of you NOT from the midwest...sucks to be you. Listen to Glowing Brain.

Artist: Say Hi (Seattle, WA) Song: Sweaters Album: Caterpillar Centipede (Barsuk Records) FFO: Her Space Holiday / Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
This one really means a lot to me. I’ve been a big fan of Say Hi (formerly Say Hi To Your Mom) for years so it’s really exciting to be able to include a track from the new album on this year’s comp. The labor of love from Eric Elbogen has come a long way since it’s beginnings back in 2002. The newest album “Caterpillar Centipede” has a pretty cool story behind it too. In 2017 it was announced that Say Hi was on it’s way out, and for a final goodbye Eric ran a kickstarter to reissue the first four albums on vinyl and far exceeded the $12,000 goal. The outpouring of love from fans inspired him to kick out (at least) one more album. If you’re familiar with Say Hi’s lo-fi, synthy, nerd love sound you won’t be disappointed with this new album. It still has the same warmth, and wit that he always brings to the table, but this time around with a bit more kick. Listen to this whole album and try not to smile the whole time. Spoiler alert: You can’t.

Artist: Shipwreck Detective (San Francisco, CA) Song: Dream Sequence Album: Midnight Lace FFO: William Basinski / Stars Of The Lid
Shipwreck Detective has created one of the best ambient albums of the year with “Midnight Lace”. When I put these comps together I toil over the track order. Part of that process is coming up with different combinations and listening to them while driving to get a feel for how the songs flow together. The problem is sometimes I get stuck on a song like “Dream Sequence”, and I just want to listen to it over and over again. Last month I drove up into the mountains in WA, and that’s exactly what happened. It was late and it was starting to snow pretty bad. There was no moonlight and I could just make out the outline of the mountains on either side of me. The whole night was quiet, and still, and eerie and this song was the perfect fit for that drive. Dev Bhat has something really special with this project. It’s lush, and beautiful, and absolutely haunting.

Artist: Kiddo (Indianapolis, IN) Song: Black N' Blue Album: Full Moon Goon FFO: Foundation / Ceremony
Kiddo is probably the hardest band I’ve heard come out of Indiana in years. Straight, to the point, no bullshit hardcore. Their new EP “Full Moon Goon” just came out a couple weeks ago and it will kick your ass. That’s really all that needs to be said. Check it the hell out.

Artist: Metavari (Fort Wayne, IN) Song: How Much Darker Album: How Much Darker b/w Street Smarts (Mind Over Matter Records)
This year we didn’t get a new Metavari album, but we did get a single that may be one of my favorite things he has done since transitioning away from the post-rock beginnings of the project. The aptly named “How Much Darker” is a split with Nashville based Makeup and Vanity Set, and it really hits in a way I feel no Metavari track has in the past. It’s almost industrial feeling. The bass that drives it is chunky and angry. It feels almost overwhelming at times. I’ve listened to this song countless times since it was released and I still have a hard time finding the words. It’s just a great damn song, and I hope we get more of this from future Metavari releases.

Artist: Dog Years (Portland, OR) Song: Beta & Dany Just Can’t Handle It Album: Spazz FFO: And So I Watched You From Afar / Fang Island
WHOOOOOOA! Dog Years. Dog Years man. FUCKING DOG YEARS. You know when you’re super hungry, and then your friends show up and drop a pile of spaghetti in front of you, and then you have a giant spaghetti party because life is tight? Well that’s Dog Years; a big giant bowl of party noodles. Their album “Spazz” just came out last month, and it’s been on heavy rotation in my car / office / apartment / everywhere else ever since. “Beta & Dany Just Can’t Handle It” is the song they threw at us for this comp, but I also have to share the video they put out for the song “BBG” because it’s killer. Side note: you’re going to see a trend in this list of us sharing videos that are NOT the song that are on the comp, but that just means more music for you. Extra Party.

Artist: Stranger Sex (Indianapolis, IN) Song: Downtown Album: Summer 2018 Demos FFO: The National / Interpol / Erections that last longer than 4 hours
This Indianapolis duo took a step back from their usual emo and post-hardcore projects (Wounded Knee, Airhockey, literally a million other bands) to do something completely different, and they did a damn good job. Sexy, synthy, lush boner jams.

Artist: Reveries (Boston, MA / NYC) Song: A Modern Invasion Album: s/t FFO: Touche Amore / La Dispute / Loma Prieta
Sometimes Facebook ads get you. That’s how I stumbled upon Reveries debut, self-titled album. I like a lot of different types of music but I am and always will be a sucker for a solid post-hardcore band. Reveries killed it right out of the gate with this one. This album doesn’t feel like a freshman release. It has the all the workings of a band that’s well seasoned and focused and knows exactly what they want to do. This is a near perfect post-hardcore record, and one of my personal favorite of the year.

Artist: Minor Movements (Lincoln, NE) Song: Clouds of Smoke Album: Bloom FFO: Caspian / Tides of Man
And now we come to our first premier on this comp. I first heard Minor Movements this past October at the first ever Post. Festival in Indianapolis. They were the opening act of the fest, and as they were getting started I turned to a friend I was with and we both agreed that if this was the OPENER then the whole weekend was going to be amazing.
It was.
And of all the bands that played that weekend Minor Movements was one of the best. I’ve gotten to know front man Nic Brant pretty well in months since then, and he has been sharing bits and pieces of their upcoming album “Bloom” with me as the work progresses. It’s safe to say that if you’re into post-rock this album is going to be one of the big ones to keep your eye on next year. “Cloud of Smoke” is the first single from the album that they’ve released (just for this comp) and it’s a banger for sure. It’s a nice, simple build, but when it hits it hits hard and it doesn’t let up. Listen to this track, get stoked, and then listen to their older releases while you patiently wait for new jams.

Artist: Kill Surf City (Fort Wayne, IN) Song: Nothing Feels Good (The Promise Ring Cover) FFO: Dinosaur Jr. / The Jesus and Mary Chain
I think I said something similar last year, but Grey Gordon is one of the hardest working musicians I’ve ever met, and he is consistently putting out great music. His project Kill Surf City had it’s debut album “Ever Notice How Everything’s Stupid” come out this year on Blacktop Records and it’s perfect lo-fi punk with a 90s alt rock vibes. The album also spawned what may be my favorite video of the year for the song “Knuckle Dragger”.  Grey threw us another exclusive for this year’s comp, and he chose to cover one of my favorite bands, The Promise Ring. He takes the relatively quite “Nothing Feels Good” and adds his signature fuzz and the result is rad as hell.
“Ever notice...” doesn’t include this track, but make sure you scope it.

Artist: Shipwreck Karpathos (Portland, OR) Song: Create, Destroy, Rebuild, Repeat. (Yea Big Remix) Album: Deviations (New Noise Entertainment) FFO: Envy / Russian Circles / Mogwai
Full disclosure: I’m in this band, and I feel weird including this / writing about myself so I’ll keep this short. This is a project that I’ve been wanting to do for a while. “Deviations” is an album made up of some of our favorite bands remixing our previous releases. Our friends in Coastlands, Yea Big, Metavari, Pillars, Archiator, Shipwreck Detective, and Ranges all took part, and they all transformed these songs into something totally new. This track by Yea Big is one of my favorites. I’ve been trying to get Yea Big, aka Stefen Robinson, involved with Shipwreck in some way pretty much since the band’s inception. He took this song, flipped it on its head, kicked the crap out of it, and patched it back up into something wonderful.  He also had a new album this year called “How Long, O Fuck”, and the only reason it’s not on this comp is that it’s just too long. Check him out.

Artist: Merō (Portland, OR) Song: Witch Hunt Album: Hands FFO: Portishead / Murder By Death
Merō caught me off guard. A few months back I went out to see the dudes in Coastlands play at Holocene here in Portland. I went early, thinking that they were playing at the beginning of the night, and planned on ducking out when they were done. Not that I wasn’t curious about the other bands, I just had to be up super early the next day and I was ready to get home. Come to find out the order was switched and Coastlands ended up closing the night out. Thank god I showed up early, because after seeing Merō live they may be one of my favorite bands in this city. That night they were premiering a video for their new single “Movement” (below), and their whole set blew me away. They had me in tears by the end of the evening. A friend made a good observation that they take a live set up that is really complex and make it look super easy. Today they premier another new single, “Witch Hunt”, off of their upcoming album “Hands”, and they were cool enough to let us share it here with you. The digital release of the album is coming in February, but for now you can scope this track and the other three singles they have up on bandcamp.

Artist: ANGEL-MAKER (Indianapolis, IN) Song: Supermoon Album: DEMO 2018 FFO: Bauhaus / Gang of Four
Chris Nelson makes good music. You may not know who he is, but if you’re actively involved with the music scene in Indianapolis you’ve almost definitely heard something that he has his hands in. His newest venture, Angel-Maker, is a step away from the usual hardcore rooted projects that he plays in (Wounded Knee, Griefseeds, Kiddo) and into the darker, moodier world of post-punk. This first collection of demos is short but totally on point, and if I understand correctly there is more coming very soon. Keep your eyes on this one.

Artist: Long Hallways (Portland, OR) Song: After The Fall Album: Close Your Eyes To Travel FFO: Red Sparrows / Do Make Say Think
Up next we have a single premier for Long Hallways off of their upcoming record “Close Your Eyes To Travel”. Their third full length is set for release on the 27th of this month, and I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the whole thing back in November. These lovely humans get better and better every time they release a new album, and this latest outing is no exception. Right now you can pre-order the new album over on bandcamp. Artist: Closet Goth (Phoenix, AZ) Song: I Wanna Party Album: Paradise Video FFO: Slutever / Fidlar
Closet Goth was recommended to me by a mutual friend when I first started working on this comp. They are super spazzy, real noisey, somewhat dancey punk and this track, “I Wanna Party”, is a perfect example of what they do. Paradise Video is actually their second release this year, their first being the full length “Friendship Villiage”.

Artist: Velleitie (Chicago, IL) Song: Last Flight For Cher Ami Album: Scheming the Afterimage with God Herself (Sounds Against Humanity) FFO: Stars Of The Lid / Grouper
Velleitie was another recommendation brought to my attention by a mutual friend, and goddamn if it wasn’t one of the best suggestions I got all year (thanks Julian). Technically this came out summer 2017, but it was later released on spotify and all other streaming platforms in 2018, so shush. It counts. This is one of my favorite ambient albums in a long time. Sean Kase, the brain behind Velleitie, is truly an artist. It’s REALLY hard to make ambient music, and not end up with just a bunch of boring tones and drones. Finding that sweet spot where you come up with something that you can either zone out to, or actively engage with is a challenge, and he carries it out perfectly.

Artist: Grammaw (Chicago, IL) Song: tl;dr Album: Will I Miss The Stars FFO: Radiator Hospital / Diane Cluck / Madeline Ava
Grammaw is a staple on this compilation every year. This past April they released their EP “Will I Miss The Stars”, and it is absolutely great. Six heavenly ukulele jams to make you cry (totally in a good way) and hug your cat / best friend / mom. Kayla is really a super solid songwriter and this EP is one of my favorite things they have done so far. Plus, the album cover is one of my favorites this year.

Artist: Staghorn (Urbana, IL) Song: Movement 4 Album: Wormwood III (Shuga Records) FFO: Godspeed You! Black Emperor / Mono / Envy
I wrote a review for this album and Staghorn’s live show last month. The post-rock trio from Urbana is doing everything right. “Wormwood III” is the third chapter of a cinematic, post-apocalyptic masterpiece. The album is actually one fluid piece of music, and “Movement 4″ is just a selection from the bigger picture. Here is what you need to know: Volcanoes ravage the earth. Pissed off intelligent animals rise up and wipe out most of the humans that the volcanoes don’t get. A group of survivors travels back in time to warn us. Said survivors start to see that maybe we don’t deserve saving. The whole thing is beautiful, plus, they have a goddamn harmonium. Everyone should have a harmonium. And to top it all off this record came with some of the coolest packaging I’ve ever seen. These folks are on top of their game all the way around. HARMONIUM.

Artist: Narcan (Indianapolis, IN) Song: Clickbait Album: Violence in my Head, Heat in my Heart FFO: Heavy Heavy Low Low / Man Is The Bastard
On Narcan’s bandcamp page they describe themselves as “Indianapolis supergroup bringing those heavy tracks to bum out your roommates. Just press play already.” It’s a fair assessment. Indy punk veterans teaming up to get real gnarly. Somewhere between powerviolence and post-hardcore, this album freakin rips and goes to some really cool places. Just press play already.

Artist: girih (Manchester, NH) Song: Vorer Album: Eigengrau (A Thousand Arms / Dunk! Records) FFO: Russian Circles / Isis
Girih’s debut album “Eigengrau” is an absolutely crushing post-metal release that demands attention from anyone who follows the genre. They do a great job of avoiding the pitfalls and cliches that come with being in a post-whatever band. You don’t have the 37 minute ambient builds that end in tremolo soaked crescendo. This album is aggressive. It’s jarring at times. The moments when it does get quite, like the first half of the song “Vorer”, still have this urgency and anticipation that set you on edge.  All in all it’s one of the more solid freshman releases to come out last year. Side note: I’m glad I get to type all of this, and not say it out loud because I don’t know how to pronounce 70% of the words in this paragraph.

Artist: Holy Fawn (Tempe, AZ) Song: Seer Album: Death Spells (Whelmed Records / Holy Roar Records / Deathwish Inc.) FFO: Sigur Ros / Deafheaven / Chelsea Wolfe
This one should come as no surprise to anyone who reads this blog. I’ve been writing here about Holy Fawn for a couple of years now. Last year their first single from "Death Spells" was on this comp, and I said that if I had to bet on one band being on the verge of blowing up it was them, and let’s be honest, if you’re the type of person that reads this blog there is a very good chance that this album is already somewhere on your AOTY list. It’s at the very top of mine. Even if you haven’t heard them yet there is a good chance that one of a billion different sites reviewing their latest release has popped up somewhere in your social media feeds. There isn’t a lot I can say that hasn’t already been said about Death Spells. It’s beautiful and dreamy while simultaneously being one of the heaviest most fear inducing albums of the I’ve ever heard. Each track on the album is so meticulously crafted, and they have created a sound that is dynamic and undeniably their own. “Seer” is a perfect example of that sound. I can’t talk about this album without mentioning the video they put out ahead of it’s release for the song “Drag Me Into The Woods”. It’s not so much a music video as much as it is a short horror movie. Check it out below. If you haven’t listened to them yet, stop being a huge stupid idiot. Go. Now.
BONUS: CD’s have been out for a while via Whelmed Records, but pre-sales for vinyl via Holy Roar Records are live right now. Get them while you can because they’re definitely going to sell out.

Artist: Wickerwolves (Fort Wayne, IN) Song: Roots FFO: Jawbox / Quicksand / Hum
Wickerwolves was a band that broke up in 2015. Shortly after, they released their first album “Tokyo Bones” in 2016, and we included a song from it on our first comp. It was easily one of my favorite albums of that year, and I was sad to have discovered them after they were already finished. I know a lot of friends from the area who had similar feelings. Flash forward to now, and the band just recently announced that they are getting back together and that we can expect new music in 2019. To celebrate they gave us “Roots”, a previously unreleased demo and our final exclusive for the year. You know how you know this band is killer? Their demos that they just sit on are better than 90% of everything that everyone else put out all year. We are stoked out of or damn brains that they are back together, and can’t wait to see what they do next.

Artist: Withered Winds (Portland, OR) Song: Death Gives Life Meaning FFO: sleepmakeswaves / I Hear Sirens
Withered Winds are relative new comers to the post-whatever scene here in Portland, but they are already making a name for themselves. Making music like this as a two-piece can be difficult, but guitarist Andy Ramirez and drummer Ruben Bustillos still manage to make a huge sound with no problem. “Death Gives Life Meaning” is their first single, and all 9 minutes of it are solid. The duo is currently working on their debut album, and plan for it’s release later this year.

And that’s going to do it for this year. I started this blog and this comp as a way to force myself to stay up to date with new music, but mainly it’s an outlet for me to share music that I love with people. A lot of the bands on this list are my close personal friends, and I am so proud every time I see these people put something great out into the world. CLICK THE LINK, download the comp, listen to every track, and most importantly, if you like what you hear go and support these bands directly. Buy a record or a tape, pay for the digital album even if you don’t have to, share a bandcamp or spotify link with your friends, and if these bands are close to your town go and see them live. There is so much good happening across so many scenes around the country, and actively supporting and participating helps keep that alive. Thanks for reading, thanks for listening.

WHO: Staghorn (Urbana, IL) WHAT: Wormwood III (EP and live show)
Post-rock (punk AF) band Staghorn is my new obsession. I caught them for the first time in October at the very first Post. Fest in Indianapolis. Leading up to that weekend there were a handful of bands that I either didn’t know that well or had never heard at all. Staghorn was one of them. I checked them out on bandcamp a couple days before and skimmed through enough to know that I was into it, but didn’t go too deep because I wanted to go into the show with no expectations or preconceived opinions. By the time the dust settled and the fest was over they were by far one of my favorite performances of the weekend. And to top it off they were some of the nicest humans I’ve ever met. I had a chance to chat with Jared and Lex about, among other things, the concept of the band (more on that in a minute), and their persistent touring. They were just coming off of a European tour and starting out on another 6 week trek across the states with UK band yndi halda. Three and a half weeks, a broken down van, and a new drummer later they arrived in the Pacific Northwest, and I got the chance to see them again here in Portland, and I was able to get their full set, a complete play through of their newest ep Wormwood III, on camera.
To dive into Wormwood you have to take a look at their previous release Parousia I - Kismet II first. This whole project is build around a sprawling post-apocalyptic story and Wormwood is the third chapter of what their first two EPs started. It revolves around an event called “The Expiration Date”. A cataclysm that wiped out a majority of human life on Earth and left the survivors to deal with a natural world that is now highly evolved and hellbent on revenge against the human race for the years the spent ravaging the planet. From there a small band of nomads use a device to travel back in time to warn the rest of us about our impending doom and societal collapse. These two EPs have been collected together on one record in a beautiful hand made, screen printed package. The second pressing of said record is almost sold out so jump on it while you can.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wormwood III picks up exactly where Kimset II leaves us; with our time traveling heroes landing in our present. The disoriented trio wanders through cities in search of water, shelter,  and other basic human needs, baffled by their firsthand look at the culture that would eventually lead to the struggle that began in the first album.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Post-rock is changing. Bands are starting to realize that there is a need to evolve past 37 minute swells that lead into 12 second crescendos. If you follow the genre you’ve probably heard people jokingly throw around terms like crescendo-core, or my personal favorite, bore-core. Staghorn is one of those bands that is moving past this. Sure those elements are there, because duh, post-rock, but it’s so much more than that. It’s refreshing seeing a post-rock band perform as a 3-piece and still sound huge. Jared’s guitar work is heavy, and aggressive and everything that I want from a band like this, and Lex’s harmonium keeps everything alive and constantly moving forward through their whole set. And their new drummer, Bryson, really took me by surprise. When this video was taken it was only his first of a handful of shows, and it was so tight you would think he had been playing with the band for years.
I love this band. I love this band. I freaking love this band, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for them.
Listen / download / buy all of their music and other merch right HERE.
That’s all from us for now, but keep an eye out in a couple weeks for our annual free comp, “Very Good Music Compilation (vol. 3)”, along with some other big news coming from us. And as always, click the links for free music, live videos, and other fun stuff.

The dudes in HOLY FAWN just finished their first tour from their home state of AZ up the west coast and back, and I was lucky enough to catch two of the shows while they were up here in Oregon (playing with This Patch of Sky making it a extra fantastic couple of nights). HF’s recordings are beautiful, and dark, and dreamy but there is, as with most bands, an energy and a rawness that you can only get from seeing them live. Both shows were absolutely killer and it was really great getting to experience this side of a band that is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Here is the full set from the second Oregon show at The Analog Theater and Cafe in Portland, featuring two new songs: the single “Arrows” released late last year, and the as of now unreleased “Drag Me Into The Woods”.
Enjoy!

Very Good Music Compilation Vol. 2
If you’re reading this, it’s safe to assume you made it through 2017.  Or, as I like to refer to it, “12 Month Long, Raging Giant Dumpster Fire pt. II.”  Instead of all of our heroes dying this year, we found out that some of the most prolific musicians, comedians, writers, and artists are creeps and sexual predators.  On top of that nonsense, Donny T. & the Swamp Drainers seem hell bent on destroying everything from the environment to the internet and anything else they can get their greedy hands on.  Our orange-haired, tiny-handed cave troll-in-chief is also doing his damndest to bring about the apocalypse, one Tweet at a time.  Across the board social media platforms seem to be filled with people that believe the Earth is flat and The Last Jedi was a bad movie.
The Last Jedi was great. Fight me.
All jokes aside, it would seem as though everyone is mad at everyone else.  But, going below the surface, it would seem that everything is not as god damn, deplorably awful as it appears.  There are still things to be excited about.   Not everyone is destroying other people or the planet or the economy. Star Wars movies, whether you love them or hate them, are still coming out and they’re fun.   Just like last year, pizza is still a thing, and also just like last year a lot of incredible music was released. Seriously....a lot.
And with that said, here we go again:
Very Good Music Compilation Vol. 2
Tumblr media
This time we have a mix of releases throughout the past year, previously unreleased demos, and singles from upcoming albums. There is a lot to dig through here so let’s dive in.
This comp will always be free. Click HERE to stream or download.

Artist: Uh (Indianapolis, IN) Song: Stephen Explains Beethoven Album: Uh
Featuring former members of Rodeo Ruby Love, In The Face of War, and The Ataris, Uh is an absolutely perfect mix of punk, hardcore, and garage rock. Their first full length is also their final release. Frontman Ben Sutton said "Kyle moved out west and we will not replace him. Uh as a band is inactive but Uh as the idea to 'always have fun always' will never die."

Artist: Jacky Boy (Bloomington, IN) Song: Closer Album: On Good Terms With Everyone You Know
Jacky Boy snuk up on me a few months back with what is undoubtedly one of the most uncomfortable videos I've ever seen (posted below). And I mean that as a compliment. The paper doll looking broken bodies, growing heads, and shrinking hands make you feel weird in all the right ways. This damn song absolutely rips, and the whole album is just solid, warm, fuzzy, fun.

Artist: Ranges (Bozeman, MT) Song: Seven Sisters Album: The Ascensionist
I got into Ranges late in the game, but I've loved everything they have put out so far, and they killed it with this album. It's a total masterpiece in my opinion, and it's on my personal top ten favorite releases of last year. Post-rock can be tricky. It's easy to fall into a formula of long builds, big crescendos, and 37 minute songs of drone. There is nothing wrong with that, but bands like this that break that mold and own the genre with fresh takes on it will always strike a chord with me. This album does just that. It's far less drone and way more groove than your typical post-rock release. They have a truly unique take on the genre and that's probably one of the big reasons they landed on Arctic Drones' "Post-rock listeners' choice" list of 50 best releases of the year.

Artist: Long Hallways (Portland, OR) Song: Shiloh Human Album: The Way Home
I've been listening to Long Hallways for a little over a year now. I've been lucky enough to become friends with them, and see them live several times in that time, and this record couldn't come out fast enough for me. They have done a great job at finding and developing a sound that is very much their own. It's dark, constantly changing, and beautiful. It takes these little unexpected turns through the whole album. It will come in and sound bright and happy and then right when you feel safe it stabs you straight in the heart. I'm trying really hard not to use cliches here, but it really is an emotional rollercoaster.  And the production on this album is near flawless. Every single nuance and every layer of every instrument is perfectly balanced and comes through so clearly. This album is killer.

Artist: Somber (Portland, OR) Song: Ment Album: Night Divorce
I shared a practice space with these fine folks for the better part of a year and I'm still mad at myself for not finding the time to go and see them live. These are the fuzzy, dark, sad jams that I live for.

Artist: Fever Dream Horror Scene (Bloomington, IN) Song: Benedictation Album: Compunction Junction Demo
Fever Dream Horror Scene is goddamn rad. Frontman, Matt Leetz, recorded the three songs for this demo on his own in his bedroom. They are relatively new, and word is that they have a new EP coming in the next few months with live drums and a full band. These demos are a really good start though. They are atmospheric and eerie, and I can't wait to see what comes next.

Artist: Metavari Song: Witchhunt (feat. Daniel Weyandt) Album: Semmitry
This one is one of my favorites on the list. Over the years Metavari has transformed from post-rock to full on synthwave, and even with a completely different sound than what it started at, it still feels like the same project. For record store day 2017 the mastermind of Metavari, Nate Utesch, did a re-score of the sic-fi classic "Metropolis". If you weren't one of the lucky few to get your hands on the limited release, fear not. Symmetri is a reworking of that score, and it's near flawless. And BONUS, this specific track includes a guest spot from Zao Vocalist, Daniel Weyandt.

Artist: In The Face of War (Kokomo, IN) Song: Nine Words (Live) Album: Final Show Music
Out of everything on this list, this release is the most important to me on a personal level. From the time I was a kid In The Face of War was not just one of my favorite local bands, they were one of my favorite bands period. They were, to me, everything that a hardcore band should be: loud, fast, unrelentingly positive, and ultra fun. I missed their final show because I had moved to California and to this day I'm still bummed that I wasn't there. This cd/dvd (paired with the handmade zine full of interviews of members past and present and fans) doesn't fix that but it at least let me revisit the band and in some small way experience their final show, and the end of something that was massively important to me and my friends growing up, and I can't think of a better track to share on this comp.
Be excellent to each other, and party on dudes.
For fans of: Ruiner / Bane / Good Clean Fun

Artist: Shipwreck Karpathos (Portland, OR) Song: Circle City Ghosts (Coastlands Remix) Album: TBA
Please forgive a little bit of shameless self-promotion. In 2016 the band that I’m in, Shipwreck Karpathos, released its first album, “Bring Down The Sky”. Immediately after I moved to Oregon and the band has been on a forced hiatus for a while. We are still quietly working on new material, but in the mean time there has been another project in the works. A handful of our friends and favorite bands are taking tracks from the album and remixing them for a new release sometime this year. This is the first of those remixes and, for now, it’s only available on this comp. Our friends in Coastlands took the most ambient song on our album, and turned it into something heavier than anything we’ve ever written. They totally owned it and turned it into something completely new, so huge thanks to those dudes.

Artist: Snack Mountain (Reykjavík, Iceland) Song: Home Alone
This song kills me. Snack Mountain is the solo project of former Rodeo Ruby Love Frontman, Zach Melton. In his words it is mostly "songs about children's books and PG rated movies." I've been watching this guy play music in one project or another since I was a kid, and ever since the first Snack Mountain release, "The Magic In Me" (a concept album about Harry Potter), I've been dying for more. And what could be better than a christmas single about, you guessed it, Home Alone. Specifically about Old Man Marley, the sweet scary guy who shovels snow and salts the sidewalks in Kevin McCallister's neighborhood.
Side note for your Home Alone fans, there is a fan theory floating around out there on the internet that Marley is actually Kevin from the future and I'm convinced it's true. Look it up, and get ready to go down a rabbit hole.
Zach has a wonderful talent for writing songs that, on the surface, sound like sweet pop songs, but when you take a closer listen they sneak up and sucker punch you right in the feels. This is one of those songs.

Artist: Pillars (Indianapolis, IN) Song: Finalita Album: Of Salt and Sea
This one slid in right at the end of the year, and knocked me off my feet. I don't know how these dudes slipped under my radar while I was living in Indianapolis but I'm still mad about it. With former members of Anapparatus and Bowels of Judas, it's safe to say these dudes have been at the game for a while and know what they are doing. Their newest release, "Of Salt and Sea" is their first fully instrumental release, and it earned them a spot on Arctic Drones' "Post-rock listeners' choice" list of 50 best releases of the year. And it is a spot well deserved. This album has the heaviest of heavies, and the lowest of lows, and is super crisp sounding throughout. This is one of my personal favorite albums to come out last year.

Artist: Kill Surf City (Fort Wayne, IN) Song: Ghost Town (The Nips Cover) Album: Ever Notice How Everything’s Stupid?
Grey Gordon is probably the hardest working musician I've ever met. It seems like he always has some new project in the works, and those projects always end up being super solid. Kill Surf City is no exception. He has released a handful of demos over the last two years all of which have been killer and his new album, "Ever Notice How Everything's Stupid?", is coming out later this year. Somewhere between post-punk, new wave, and early grunge, he has captured something really unique with this project while at the same time feeling very nostalgic. This previously unreleased track, a cover of The Nips 1980 song "Ghost Town", isn't going to be on the album, but it's enough to hold us over until it's out.

Artist: Deadhorse (Erie, PA) Song: Conflict Album: Crescendo
The dudes in Deadhorse have something pretty incredible with their most recent album, "Crescendo". It's very much an album about protest, about action, and about fighting back. It's beautiful, it's heartbreaking, and it's wonderful. They can put it into words far better than I can.
"These are protest songs. Against the destruction of our planet and our environment. Against the needless slaughter of innocent creatures of all species. Against the imperialism of all modern nations for global dominance and influence. Against the separation of society by means of race, religion, class, and sexual orientation. Against the hastened march our civilization is taking towards it’s own destructive demise. Against the staggering inequality between the have’s and the have not’s. Against bigotry, racism, sexism, classism, speciesism.
This is a punk record. Play it loud."

Artist: Longclaw (Portland, OR) Song: Belly Up Album: Patterns
Longclaw is one of the best new post-hardcore groups I've heard in a while. Their debut EP "Patterns" came out this past summer and I didn't listen to anything else for a month when I first heard it. Fuzzy, noodly guitars, sad vocals, and all the feels.

Artist: Grammaw (Chicago, IL) Song: The Death Song Album: Will I Miss The Stars
Grammaw is the solo project for song-writer and all around hell of a good person Kayla Bates. Starting in indy, and migrating to Chicago, they are constantly playing out and touring harder than most working bands I know. I've had the pleasure of playing a handful of shows with them in the past and their brand of stripped down dreamy ukulele heartbreakers is wonderful. This previously unreleased track is from their new album, "Will I Miss The Stars", due out later this year.

Artist: HOLY FAWN (Tempe, AZ) Song: Arrows
I love Holy Fawn. I really love Holy Fawn. I seriously, really love Holy Fawn. Anyone who follows this blog, or knows me personally already knows this. Their debut release, "Realms", came out a few years back and it has constantly been on heavy rotation ever since I first came across it. They like to put out stickers and shirts that read "Loud Heavy Pretty Noises", and that is the best possible way to describe what they do. They somehow manage to be the most ambient and graceful band while simultaneously kicking out some of the heaviest damn riffs I've ever heard. They are absolutely haunting. If I had to put money on one band being on the verge of blowing up it is without a doubt Holy Fawn. While they didn't put out an album this year, they did release this single and it is probably my favorite thing to come out this year. Don't be an idiot, listen to it all the way to the end. You'll be glad you did.

Artist: A Collective Subconscious (Portland, OR) Song: Elysium Album: Sanskara
A Collective Subconscious is another post-rock band from the Pacific North West that has a very unique take on the genre. The focus is not so much on atmosphere but more so on rhythm. That's not to say it's not atmospheric, especially in the parts where the violin comes through the whole thing feels like some beautiful nightmare dreamscape, but it's all around a lot more driving than what you hear from most post rock bands. This whole album has a very solid structure to it, but it's still something you can get lost in.

Artist: You.May.Die.In.The.Desert (Seattle, WA) Song: Patient Glaciers Album: Patient Glaciers
I wrote about these guys for the first time back in May, after I saw them at the annual NW Post-rock Collective Showcase in Portland. This three piece sounds bigger than most standard 5 - 6 piece bands you're going to see live. As I said last time, while they are technically a post-rock band, I hesitate to call them that. Even during their more quiet pieces it is non-stop energy. Watching them feels more like you're watching a hardcore band than a post-rock band. I'm pretty sure that is almost verbatim what I wrote last time, but dammit these dudes are fun. This song is the title track for an upcoming 7'' they are releasing some time this year. Be sure to check it out.

Artist: House Olympics (Bloomington, IN) Song: New Amsterdam Album: Spectral
House Olympics blows me away over and over every time they release something new. Their style of raw, emotional post-hardcore has been high on my list of favorite things for the last couple of years. Their newest album, "Spectral", is heavy, and brutally honest, and arguably their best release to date. This one, along with a few others on this comp, made it onto my personal top ten list for 2017.

Artist: ARCHIATOR Song: Chasing Silence Album: Iterations
I have known Ian Duvall since I was 12 years old. I've had the privilege of playing in multiple bands with him over the years, and of calling him my friend for most of my life. ARCHIATOR is his brain child and labor of love, and he grows more as a musician with every single piece of music that he puts out. His newest album, "Iterations", comes out later this year, and this single is the first preview released exclusively for this comp. ARCHIATOR is a blend between post-rock, metal, djent, and sometimes even elements of folk music. It sounds weird but it all flows together perfectly. When I asked him about this track he said he and his partner "went on several adventures last summer just looking to escape the noise of population and make a field recording of nature."

HONORABLE MENTIONS
There were a lot more bands that I wanted to include on this year’s list but due to time constraints, label issues, and copyrights we couldn’t include them on the comp itself. Here are a few more that would have been included if life wasn’t hard.
Tumblr media
Artist: This Patch of Sky (Eugene, OR) Album: These Small Spaces
This Patch of Sky put out one of the best albums of 2017. That’s not an opinion.  That is a fact. This record is absolutely perfect. It is the most cinematic album I’ve ever heard, and I’ve never heard a band paint such vivid pictures without saying a single word.
For fans of: This Will Destroy You / If These Trees Could Talk
Full album: https://thispatchofsky.bandcamp.com
Vinyl / CD’s: http://thispatchofsky.merchnow.com
Tumblr media
Artist: Mike Adams At His Honest Weight Album: Steals The Hits Off Country Beauties
Mike Adams is probably one of my favorite songwriters of all time, but this time around he did something a little different. He took his signature shoegazey, surfy, dream pop sound and applied it to hit country songs by the likes of Jo Dee Messina and Mary Chapin Carpenter. He has taken songs that I personally would have never taken a second glance at and turned them into something that I really love. If my understanding is correct there are only a limited number of downloads available for this album so get it while you can.
For fans of: Starflyer 59 / Pedro The Lion

youtube
Artist: Childspeak (Eugene, OR) Song: Playground Posh
Childspeak didn’t have an album come out this year, but they spent the better part of the year working on a new one. Noodly, odd timed, and fun as hell. This video is a live recording of their song, “Playground Posh”, from that upcoming album.
For fans of: Battles / Fang Island
More Childspeak: https://childspeakmusic.bandcamp.com/releases
Tumblr media
Artist: Stranger Sex (Indianapolis, IN) Album: Sweet Nothings
This Indianapolis duo took a step back from their usual emo and post-hardcore projects (Wounded Knee, Airhockey, literally a million other bands) to do something completely different and they did a damn good job. Sexy, synthy, lush boner jams. You won’t regret checking this out.
For fans of: The National / Interpol / Erections that last longer than four hours
Full album: https://strangersex.bandcamp.com/album/sweet-nothings-2
And that’s the end of that. I want to take a second to thank every single one of these wonderful people listed here for being a part of this little thing I do. I really dropped the ball on writing reviews this year and I hope in some small way this makes up for it. I may not always keep up with this blog, but I do my best too share as much music with as many people as possible. Again this comp is free, so click the link, download the dang thing, and if you like what you hear visit these bands and buy the albums. And of course check out New Noise on all the other billion social media places.

Non Temere, Antropos. Let’s get weird.
Non Temere, Antropos is a new band from Verona, Italy that is honestly….kind of hard to explain. I mean this in a good way.
Tumblr media
Click right here to stream / download.
Their first album, simply called “Non Temere, Antropos”, goes to some pretty weird places. It’s a strange mix of post-rock, jazz, and psychedelic rock. Sometimes it’s really dreamy and pretty, sometimes it gets pretty aggressive, and other times it is a big giant bowl of noodles. It’s totally all over the place. But it totally works. The changes from song to song are just strange enough to make you do a double take, but natural enough to keep from being jarring. They never fall into that trap that young bands tend to do where they can’t figure out what type of band they want to be so they just throw a bunch of riffs at a wall and see what sticks. They managed to avoid all of that and came out with something that all feels very fluid and holds together as solid, cohesive debut release.
But what do they actually sound like?
If Isis got back together, dropped a bunch of acid, and started a jazz band, and that band was conducted by Glenn Branca and Philip Glass...having an argument.
Yeah, kind of like that. And I think that is literally the best compliment I’ve ever given a band in my life.
It opens up with the very short, very gorgeous guitar intro “Papa Legba” and flows straight into the first song, “Leggère Cose Pesanti (pt. 1), and the ethereal saxophone that drives most of the album. This is the first song I actually heard from these dudes a couple of months back before the album was released. The song is dark. Haunting. It never reaches the point of getting truly aggressive, but there is a certain tension throughout the whole thing that pulled me in from the first time I heard it.
Then comes the first big change as it slides in to “J.C." The most avant-garde moments of the album happen in the first couple of minutes of this track and then it transitions into it’s most psychedelic moments.
From there it goes into my favorite track, “Splitting The Metronomic Breath”. The whole song is a slow, quite build to what is a really triumphant, uplifting final 2 minutes. Every time I listen to it I just smile. For me this is the absolute peak of the whole album. I’ve listened to this song about a dozen times while writing this just to hear that climax.
A little later on you come to “Leggere Cose Peasant (pt. 2)”, one of the only tracks with vocals. Sparse, angry, but more of a yell than a scream, and eventually some super tough gang vocals at the end of what almost feels like a hardcore inspired jazz song. Or a jazz inspired hardcore song? I don’t know, but it fucking kills.
All in all the dudes in Non Temere, Antropos put out a pretty damn solid first release. Do yourself a favor. Take two seconds, click the link, go to their page, and download it. And if you feel so inclined, even though it’s a free download, show these guys some support and buy it from them.

You May Die In The Desert playing "True North" from their album "International Waters". Recorded at the NW Post-Rock Collective 2017 Showcase at the Tonic Lounge in Portland, OR. Check out the album at https://ymditd.bandcamp.com/ I was lucky enough to check out the NW Post-Rock Collective 2017 Showcase this past weekend and You May Die In The Desert was one of my favorite parts of the night. YMDITD is a three-piece post-rock band from Seattle, WA that I hesitate to even call a post-rock band. The definitely have all the elements you would expect in a post-rock project; guitars drowned in delay, the occasional slow build, and 30 million pedals spread across the stage, but they are a lot more fast-paced and driving than most post-rock bands. Their live show is non-stop energy and it feels like there is a lot more hardcore or punk influence peppered with post-rock sensibility. Call them whatever you want, they are a ton of fun to watch and their most recent release “International Waters” is a banger for sure. Check out their bandcamp page (link above) to download the album and keep an eye out for their new 7 inch “Patient Glaciers” set to come out this summer.

Indy's favorite super downtuned emo sweethearts, AIRHOCKEY, played their final show in July of 2015 in a small sweaty basement in Bloomington, IN. Now nearly 2 years later here is the video of that set. I’ve said over and over again that at the time they were one of my absolute favorite bands in the Indy area. By the time I came across them the end wasn’t very far away and I only got to see them maybe 4 or 5 times, but those shows were always so much goddamn fun. Every song they played was from their self-titled album (again one of my favorites) and you can get the whole thing for free at https://airhockeymusic.bandcamp.com

This Patch Of Sky playing “Time Destroys Everything, But Our Foundation Remains”, from their self-titled album, at Ash Street Saloon in Portland, OR last month.
I started listening to these dudes about a year ago and recently was lucky enough to move to an area where I get to see them from time to time. The first time I saw them I cried like a baby. As far as post-rock acts go they have one of the most emotional, cinematic, expressive sets I’ve ever seen. When you’re in a post-rock band it’s really easy to fall into cliche, relying on really simple tricks, and really boring song structure, “drown the whole thing in a bunch of reverb, throw a build in here, swell this one note for 47 1/2 minutes and have a quick climax, and go.” This Patch of Sky does not fall into that at all. Between the heaviest bass tone I think I’ve ever heard in a post-rock band, and the cello keeping the songs moving (MORE CELLO IN EVERY BAND EVER PLEASE), they are anything but predictable. That along with their energy on stage, and the fact that they are easily some of the nicest dudes I’ve ever met make them one of the best live shows I’ve seen in a really really long time. Check out the video here and get their album at https://thispatchofsky.bandcamp.com

Coastlands’ set intro at the Doug Fir Lounge back in January.
Coastlands newest album “To Be Found” came out back in August and it is damn near perfect. Seamlessly moving from ambient, flowing soundscapes, into explosive climaxes. This is a perfect example of what post-rock is supposed to be, and their live show is even better. I’m super stoked to see where these dudes are headed.

Very Good Music Compilation Vol. 1
Well we made it. This year is finally over and we are on to the next one. Icons died, the police murdered way too many people, and Cheeto Christ is all set to make america hate again. But so far we have survived the first days of the apocalypse and in between all the garbage of the last year, a lot of good stuff happened too. We have a new Star Wars, The Cubs finally won the series, and pizza is still a thing so it can’t be ALL bad. And to top it off a whole lot of good music came out this year. And with that I present to you: Very Good Music Compilation Vol. 1
Tumblr media
Some of these artists are super good friends, some are bands that I’ve booked / played shows with, and some I just stumbled upon and fell in love with. All of them have put out some amazing music and this selection of singles and demos are my favorite from the last year. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THESE JAMS FOR FREE!
ARCHIATOR - Ebullient Ian Duvall has been at it for a few years now with ARCHIATOR and his newest release "The Myriad Wondering Little Voices Of The Earth Rise Up" came out a few months back. Previous releases have always been super solid, but this is the most well put together, captivating record he has done so far. For fans of Cloudkicker/Russian Circles /And So I Watched You From Afar  Hear the whole the album at archiator.bandcamp.com
House Olympics - Laugh Track I'm literally angry about how good House Oylmpics' newest EP "Nothing Feels Better Than Feeling Better" is. It is real emo. The kind of emo that doesn't make you feel like a dork for using the word emo. Sad beautiful heavy jams packed full of chunky riffs, and noodley tapping by some of the nicest dudes on earth. For fans of Mineral / Algernon Cadwallader / Turnover. Hear the whole EP at houseolympics.bandcamp.com/album/nothing-feels-better-than-feeling-better HOLY FAWN - Foal Okay so technically this came out in 2015 but it was mid-December so work with me here. The dudes in HOLY FAWN have made a seriously incredible album. "Realms" is sometimes slow and dreamy, sometimes dark and heavy, and always unrelentingly beautiful. For fans of Brand New / Sigur Ros / Foxing  Hear the whole album at holyfawn.bandcamp.com
Shipwreck Karpathos - Golden Axe Shipwreck Karpathos released their first album "Bring Down The Sky" back in July. Along with that album there was a companion release "Return To Silence" which is a collection of b-sides, live recordings, and ambient tracks. A mix of post-rock and post-hardcore, it moves from fast paced heavy riffs, to slow moving ambient soundscapes. For fans of Thursday / Envy / Russian Circles Hear the whole album at shipwreckkarpathos.bandcamp.com  WICKERWOLVES - Blindspot WICKERWOLVES final album "Tokyo Bones" is damn near perfect. Angry punchy no bullshit indie rock from Ft. Wayne Indiana. They called it quits in 2015 and sat on this before releasing it a year later.  Hear the whole album at wickerwolves.bandcamp.com Clint Breeze (feat F.A.C.T.S, Raj Mahal) - Nappy Head Clint Breeze is the brainchild of Indianapolis native and hip-hop producer, Carrington Clinton. With 2015's release "Maisha" still fresh in mind his newest album, "Nappy Head", takes on police brutality, racism, and white privilege with the help of his backing band The Groove and a million other awesome artists from the Indy area. In Carrington's words, "It's blunt, in your face, hopeful, but real. I think it’s something that music listeners and appreciators across the land need to hear. I tried my best to encompass different styles of music. It’s musically sound, and sonically, I think it’s my best piece yet. Lyrically and intellectually there is a lot that is said that needs to be heard."  Hear the whole album at clintbreeze.bandcamp.com FINITE - Infinity Falling (Demo) FINITE is a concept album and labor of love by Aaron Price that has been a work in progress since 2011. For fans of Glassjaw / Thursday / Converge  Hear the whole EP at griefseedsin.bandcamp.com/releases New Noise Entertainment has been around for roughly 10 years now as mainly an outlet for booking local music. In the last few years it has also served to help with short run releases, but it doesn’t really fit to call it a label. More than anything New Noise is an outlet to share music from smaller artists that maybe don’t get huge amounts of attention from other sources. This blog will serve that purpose. Here I will share new music, old music that you may have overlooked, probably a little shameless self promotion of my own music here and there but I’ll keep that to a minimum, and anything else in between. Follow us here and on Facebook for updates. For now go download the comp, enjoy the jams, and start your 2017 off right.
