WHO: Staghorn (Urbana, IL) WHAT: Wormwood III (EP and live show)

Post-rock (punk AF) band Staghorn is my new obsession. I caught them for the first time in October at the very first Post. Fest in Indianapolis. Leading up to that weekend there were a handful of bands that I either didn’t know that well or had never heard at all. Staghorn was one of them. I checked them out on bandcamp a couple days before and skimmed through enough to know that I was into it, but didn’t go too deep because I wanted to go into the show with no expectations or preconceived opinions. By the time the dust settled and the fest was over they were by far one of my favorite performances of the weekend. And to top it off they were some of the nicest humans I’ve ever met. I had a chance to chat with Jared and Lex about, among other things, the concept of the band (more on that in a minute), and their persistent touring. They were just coming off of a European tour and starting out on another 6 week trek across the states with UK band yndi halda. Three and a half weeks, a broken down van, and a new drummer later they arrived in the Pacific Northwest, and I got the chance to see them again here in Portland, and I was able to get their full set, a complete play through of their newest ep Wormwood III, on camera.

To dive into Wormwood you have to take a look at their previous release Parousia I - Kismet II first. This whole project is build around a sprawling post-apocalyptic story and Wormwood is the third chapter of what their first two EPs started. It revolves around an event called “The Expiration Date”. A cataclysm that wiped out a majority of human life on Earth and left the survivors to deal with a natural world that is now highly evolved and hellbent on revenge against the human race for the years the spent ravaging the planet. From there a small band of nomads use a device to travel back in time to warn the rest of us about our impending doom and societal collapse. These two EPs have been collected together on one record in a beautiful hand made, screen printed package. The second pressing of said record is almost sold out so jump on it while you can.

Wormwood III picks up exactly where Kimset II leaves us; with our time traveling heroes landing in our present. The disoriented trio wanders through cities in search of water, shelter,  and other basic human needs, baffled by their firsthand look at the culture that would eventually lead to the struggle that began in the first album.

Post-rock is changing. Bands are starting to realize that there is a need to evolve past 37 minute swells that lead into 12 second crescendos. If you follow the genre you’ve probably heard people jokingly throw around terms like crescendo-core, or my personal favorite, bore-core. Staghorn is one of those bands that is moving past this. Sure those elements are there, because duh, post-rock, but it’s so much more than that. It’s refreshing seeing a post-rock band perform as a 3-piece and still sound huge. Jared’s guitar work is heavy, and aggressive and everything that I want from a band like this, and Lex’s harmonium keeps everything alive and constantly moving forward through their whole set. And their new drummer, Bryson, really took me by surprise. When this video was taken it was only his first of a handful of shows, and it was so tight you would think he had been playing with the band for years.

I love this band. I love this band. I freaking love this band, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for them.

We’re getting close to the end of the album. Today’s feature remix off of “Deviations” os CJ Blessum of @rangesmusic take on “The Sound So Loud It Becomes Silence”. Last year Ranges put out probably the the best post-rock album of the year “The Ascensionist” and the year before that “ The Gods of the Copybook Headings” these dudes consistently put out gold and we feel so privileged to have them be a part of this. CJ did some really cool things with this track. He kept the structure of the song intact but reworked most of the guitars as different piano and synth parts and threw in some really rad electronic backing track that really changes the mood. This song actually first showed up on @athousandarms last installment of “Open Language” earlier in the year. “Deviations” PT. 4. @marcertel of @pillarstheband remixed “Golden Axe” and it got weird. The good kind of weird. The kind of weird that makes you go “WHOA THAT WAS WEIRD. AWESOME.” He took a very loud very happy and bright feeling song and broke it down into something dark and simultaneously ambient and huge sounding. This one was a great surprise for us. Pillars is from our home town and somehow we didn’t meet them until after we moved away. We finally got to meet up and play together at @the_post_festival and it’s been an absolute pleasure getting to know these dudes. @the_post_festival was this past weekend and I we can’t say thank you enough to everyone involved. Getting to be a part of a community that is so huge and so massively supportive is an incredible feeling. I’ve always jokes that post-rock is more punk than punk rock these days. I haven’t seen this level of unity and support and love from any other scene in my life. It was great playing with so many bands that we all adore and making so many new friends.
