I LOVE THIS YOURE SO RIGHT
MORE house MD headcanons (just hilson)
finished season 2 officially FINALLY. took forever. anyway these freaks live in the little furrows of my brain and eat my grey matter so here's this
House:
had multiple deadly allergies as a kid that he grew out of as an adult for some reason
the pickiest eater you have ever seen. the canned soup is not a laziness thing he's just afraid to waste his money on shit he won't eat
composes his own songs on the piano when he's got time but never writes then down, freestyles that shit
DEFINITELY has some pot he smokes a few times a year
obviously when Wilson learns this he's concerned that maybe it's laced and is like House where are you getting this and House literally tells him the exact location on the exact part of town on the exact street and where the guy normally is on weekdays because he assumes Wilson wanted in on it
subconsciously thinks of Chase, Cameron, and Foreman as his children. of course he doesn't realize it nor would he ever admit it so don't misinterpret but lwk worries about them a lot and talks about them to acquaintances in such a way that multiple people actually think he has three grown up children
gets overstimulated fairly easily but not the shut-down-get-quiet overstimulation he starts yelling and hitting things and getting pissed off
has bad anxiety but in the opposite way most people do. doesn't get anxious in most social situations at all whatsoever but give that man ten minutes alone with his thoughts in his own house and he's sweating
doesn't sing but has perfect pitch. sometimes someone in the office will hum something or make a noise and he'll just absently go "E flat" (based on one of my irl friends noah you won't see this but you freak me the fuck out with that)
runs cold all year (something something universal recipient)
eventually stops drinking because it gives him panic attacks and nightmares
sad weepy drunk
pretends not to care about patients but there have been several times that a patient died and made him completely shut down for days at a time
views his disability as something to compensate for
if House MD took place in the modern day he would definitely have a twitch live stream about a patient to get idea
chronic nail biter
most definitely would own one of those massive fucking brick flip phones even if the show was set today
he doesn't know what OS stands for. couldn't tell you what a USB-C looked like if his life depended on it. wouldn't be very good at operating a smart phone. has an extremely durable cheap phone because he's always dropping and/or throwing it
Wilson:
lactose intolerant methinks
or possibly gluten sensitive
would still eat gluten bread and dairy products regardless
never quite got the hang of chopsticks. if he gets sushi or Chinese takeout with House, House makes that little chopsticks contraption for him
do you guys know what im talking about
the kind of autism that makes you feel bad about everything ever all the time and obsessed with a particular thing
definitely collected baseball cards at some point in his life
doesn't really keep kosher but hates most meat so he rarely ends up mixing dairy and meat anyways
if you gave him one of those Nee Doh nice cube things he would sit there and play with that shit for hours at a time
if he was born in the right generation he would have loved slime as a kid
ended up really close with House's team
does marching Halloween costumes with House every single year
House actually doesn't like Halloween (lots of walking) but it makes Wilson happy so usually he agrees
one year they went as American Gothic (House insisted on being the old man with the pitchfork and now everyone has photos of Wilson in a bad blonde wig)
really good in pediatrics. it really wears on him if he has a young patient but he handles it really well
taught himself to make balloon animals for the pediatric cancer patients
runs warm all year (something something universal donor)
big spoon
has joint problems but he insists it's not that bad so he won't go get seen for it
favorite movie is Pretty in Pink
office teddy bear. working in oncology is hard and some of the nurses just don't take it as well, so if he's around he takes it upon himself to comfort them
shockingly pretty good with technology and phones. i like to think this is because he has a fairly adaptive personality as it is and medical technology (especially in oncology) is always changing so he's used to keeping up with new things
definitely would have one of those fucking military ass otterboxes and a tempered glass screen protector and a camera protector like someone is gonna come run over his fucking phone
lwk i think he'd be kinky asf but im gonna leave that there

house MD headcanons the threequel
hey so you guys? really liked the last one apparently? here's this AND a couple NSFW headcanons at your request you FREAKS!!!!! this is mostly Wilson and House but i threw in the ducklings too cause i love them
House:
actually kind of sensitive. typically only gets his feelings hurt by people he values and about topics he's touchy about but will take those things to heart if said about him
eats like a bird. im not sure if there's science to back this up but ive met a few people who were addicts (to a variety of substances) and it has something to do with how the drugs interact with certain receptors in the intestines (depending on the drug) and the fact that opioids can suppress hunger in some people, but he doesn't eat for shit. part of this is also because he's picky about what he'll eat
doesn't have the time or patience for pets, but has a bunch of houseplants
i like to think he got bored one day and named all of them and talks at them sometimes
misses going to concerts, but it's hard to go to festivals or concerts safely or comfortably with his cane (standing for long periods + people stepping all over him + sometimes lots of slopes and stairs)
oral fixation, always chewing on something
chronic stomach issues (again, opioids will do that to you)
genetically bad teeth but takes care of them religiously
likes treating kids because they tend to lie less or for completely innocent reasons, they also amuse him more
got insecure when Wilson made that comment about his thinning hair so he started oiling it (Cameron told him which oils to get)
will say sexual things to get a rise out of people and can take it in return if it's a joke, but if someone is actually flirting with him he kind of doesn't know what to do
water? what's that
almost exclusively drinks sodas/sugary drinks, energy drinks, or coffee
don't come at me for the next one i DO NOT WANT TO HEAR IT
he's almost definitely a bottom regardless of who's doing him
"what about cuddy?" Cuddy's got a giant pink strap and he takes that shit like a girl twice a week i don't know what else to tell you
has a thing for being praised and humiliated
brat obviously
will pretty much try anything and has tried pretty much everything
Wilson:
bad temper. before i started watching this show everyone made me think Wilson was like incredibly docile and sweet and quiet all the time and he's actually really not?
very easily agitated, but very quick to apologize if he takes it out on anybody
keeps every single thing his patients give him whether they make it or not
lwk i think the reason his marriages failed is because he's literally watched people waste away and did every day of his practice and he's scared to get to a point that he can't live without somebody and then lose them
im only on s3 though don't come for me
also goes all-out on people's birthdays. bought house's team birthday gifts which wouldn't be so crazy except house didn't even remember any of their birthdays
one of those people that's very passive about their own birthday and insists that people don't need to celebrate it but gets really happy and emotional when people celebrate it with him
carrot cake enjoyer
always designated driver for House
has literally never gotten a ticket or traffic violation in his entire life
bought House a bunch of stupid patterned ties for his birthday. like they've got fucking cats all over them or they're bright pink and polka dotted
God's most underappreciated brat tamer
that man gives it GOOD!!!!!!!! he didn't get no three (3) wives sitting around!!!!!!
also genuinely a very good bed partner. not pressuring not overenthusiastic very much a "what do you need" kind of partner, very affectionate if it's necessary for the other person's comfort
probably likes to physically restrain partners but won't admit it because he thinks it's weird of him
manhandling, giving praise, 'o' denial....... guys come on
would be willing to switch but being the one running things is more natural for him
Cameron:
probably got kind of into collecting things like Sonny Angels or Calico Critters
very casual about it though, just thinks they're really cute
loved strawberry shortcake as a little kid and once went as her for Halloween
victim of a really bad perm when she was like 14
also had this fucked grandma bob between the ages of like 7 and 11
me too girl 💔
used to be very acne prone but it naturally sorted itself out
literally does not have a skincare routine. sleeps in her makeup all the time. she does wear SPF though!
does not enjoy working with children whatsoever at all
really likes musical theater. this bitch keeps up with the Tony awards for sure
gives out the really good candy and full size bars on halloween
favorite movie is Ferris Bueller's Day Off
also really likes horror films i think
Chase:
he gives repressed bisexual so bad does he know it's legal now
takes care of his nails religiously because for whatever stupid reason he used to be insecure about them
likes to make little origami animals when he's bored and stick them in random places
started making yo mama jokes so much they know have an office rule that after three jokes a day he has to put a quarter in the "yo mama jar"
the yo mama jar is an empty and washed Vlasic pickle jar with the label still on that sits on the coffee station
house takes the money from said yo mama jar
i know this bitch buys Legos but not in a normal way he's buying a $600 dinner table sized replica of the Titanic and working on that bitch every day for six weeks
if he read The Song of Achilles he would never get over it
gives out the really shit stuff during Halloween like he's giving out toothbrushes and the shit candy nobody's ever heard of
..............mommy/daddy kink
WHAT WHO SAID THAT
Foreman:
i feel like he grew up in New Jersey but his parents are originally from the south idk why i get this idea
maybe it's that his dad is so staunchly Christian (i know that's not just a southern thing but it's super common here so)
after the episode where he got insanely sick he's a HORRIBLE hypochondriac and still terrified about losing cognitive function
gets nightmares about the experience
REALLY likes ASMR but not the gross wet lip smacking ASMR
y'know those ASMR videos that come up on tiktok live at like 3 in the morning with the hand puppets that have a bowl full of water and wooden beads? he would like that kinda stuff
watches war documentaries i genuinely can't explain this but i know this in my heart
not because he's interested in war in any particular way just because he really likes documentaries
also really likes David Attenborough and his nature films
would really like those Goetze's caramel things with the cream in the middle
likes caramel better than chocolate
also does a really elaborate Halloween costume
okay that's all i got for you gootbye 😇

i finally watched dead poets society
got a little too into the robert sean leonard obsession and went "hey ive got a few free hours on a Monday night let me finally watch Dead Poets Society" so now i have a couple thoughts.
Neil's crown of thorns
i noticed that during the scene of the play, all the other nymphs (are they nymphs or fairies? i know nothing about A Midsummer Night's Dream) are wearing flowers, but Neil's costume is made of sharp branches, and is pretty significantly larger than the head pieces that the others wear. they even call it a crown ("that's your cue, Neil, here's your crown"). obviously there's some biblical symbolism there from Jesus' crown of thorns. crowns that resemble branches or thorns represent a heavy burden, or sometimes martyrdom, typically one that is inescapable and painful.
2. the score
okay im not a music theorist at all, but the music for this film is beautiful and i noticed a couple of things. firstly, "Neal," Neil's main theme, plays primarily during the play scene. i haven't rewatched it to see where else his theme plays, but "Neal" overlays almost the entire play scene and it is at its loudest during that scene. "Keating's Triumph" is the song that plays at the very end, during the last scene, when the boys stand up on their desks to show their respect and goodbyes for Mr. Keating when he's fired. if you listen, it's the exact same tune as "Neal," the string instrument in the back sounds exactly the same, but it's more orchestral. comparing them back to back makes "Neal" feel childish and innocent. im also trying to figure out why Neil's theme is titled "Neal" and if that means something, but so far all ive found is that it's a variant of the name "Niall," which is Irish and can sometimes mean "champion" or "passion." i think it's pretty fitting.
3. the open window
when i first watched the scene i was confused as to why he opened the window. i thought at first maybe it was to mislead his parents and make them think that he'd just gotten out, but that didn't make sense. but i noticed two things: the recurring imagery of Neil in the window, and Neil's story from earlier in the film.
"It was a dark and rainy night. And this old lady who had a passion for jigsaw puzzles sat by herself in her house at her table to complete a new jigsaw puzzle. As she pieced the puzzle together, she realized to her astonishment that the image that was formed was her very own room, and the figure in the centre of the puzzle, as she completed it, was herself. And with trembling hands she placed the last four pieces and stared in horror at the face of the demented madman at the window. The last thing that this old lady ever heard was the sound of breaking glass."
it doesn't seem relevant if you take it at face value. but it's a spooky story, and one of the things that makes it frightening is that her death was uncontrollable; unexpected. she didn't let in the madman, the madman got in. Neil opening the window is him seizing autonomy in the final decision to let in the madman.
Neil is also always sitting in front of the window. i noticed this even on a first watch. they also seem to make a point to have him sit at the window, so that it gives the appearance that he's trapped inside it like a cage. he left the crown at the window because it represented his burden. he left the window open because he was finally escaping. his burden is left behind.
4. queer allegory
LISTEN TO ME I KNOW EVERYONE AND THEIR MOM HAS SAID THIS I KNOW BUT LISTEN TO ME. firstly, just the subtext of the interactions between Neil and Todd had me tilting my head a little, but that wouldn't be enough for me to give this any weight. except they keep talking about Walt Whitman. Walt Whitman, if you didn't know, is famously regarded by scholars to have been queer. i can't confirm this so take it with a grain of salt, but it's been said several times that he most likely had a sexual relationship at one point, however briefly, with Oscar Wilde, who was literally put on trial for allegedly being a homosexual. "I'm being chased by Walt Whitman." hello.??? and while this has to be considered through a particular social context, Mr. Perry is very much a very traditionally masculine figure. cold, unfeeling, unrelenting. they even took that family photo outside Welton with Neil's mother sitting at her husband's side (which was deliberately used in portraiture for centuries as a sign of submission, most often in family portraits). the arts are seen as a feminine thing a lot of the time. Neil's desire to act is seen by Mr. Perry not just as disobedience, but as a direct insult to both Neil and Mr. Perry's own masculinity. Puck is also often portrayed as a feminine character, much like the other nymphs, but refers to itself as "it" in many iterations of the play. Puck is very much a gender non-conforming character, and for a boy like Neil to play him rather than one of the explicitly male characters is obviously deliberate. and when Neil is reciting the play's ending monologue, which is Puck asking the audience for forgiveness and approval if it offended them ("if we shadows have offended..."), he's staring his father in the face. a plea for approval and forgiveness while staring his father in the face.
im actually not joking when i say this movie ruined my life. im getting a carpe diem tattoo. this movie kind of changed my life.

Ecology and Conservation in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom
Been making a lot of House MD posts recently, but I'm finally close to finishing up Tears of the Kingdom, and I wanted to talk about one of my favorite parts of the game (and most of the Zelda games I've played): its dedication to immersing you in its natural world.
For the purpose of this, I'm gonna pretty exclusively discuss Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom because that's where this is most obvious and observable, but I might bring up some earlier games as well.
First, fauna.
One of the most defining features of both games is the sheer scope of its biological diversity. TOTK has a somewhat expanded list of species, but BOTW also did this very well. Some of these species don't even add much of anything to the plot or gameplay in and of itself. Take, for example, birds. There are six different species of sparrows alone: the common sparrow, the red sparrow, the blue sparrow, the rainbow sparrow, the sand sparrow, and the golden sparrow. None of these sparrows have any purpose for the story and none have unique drops (all of them drop a chickaloo tree nut if killed). There's also five different kinds of pigeons. While the other birds in the game don't have many variations (such as the Islander Hawk, Mountain Crow, or Bright-Crested Duck), they still exist without much obvious purpose.
Tears of the Kingdom, because it introduced two completely different ecosystems - the Sky Islands and the Depths - also gave us an incredible range of new flora.
Wide variations of plants, herbs, fruits, and vegetables does serve the purpose of giving the player certain status effects, so there is a much greater list of flora in TOTK than there is fauna, but even still, the sheer diversity in the game's natural world is pretty astounding. If you include flowers and fungi that are not edible, the list is pretty exhaustive.
Most, if not all, of these plants only grow in specific locations or regions - some in more specific places than others. For example, you can find Splash Fruit in most of Zorana, parts of Akkala, and the Lanayru Wetlands, but Dazzlefruit is a little trickier to locate, usually only growing in the Sky Islands and around fallen rocks. Plants like the Bomb Flower and Muddlebuds exclusively grow in the Depths, and while they are plentiful, they can be a little hard to find for players who haven't unlocked the Depths' entire map because of the general lack of light. All of the natural life also gets its own entry in the Hyrule Compendium, which can tell players where to find the plant or animal they're looking for, but also give a synopsis on the adaptations of those plants and animals. For example, the compendium tells you that the Hearty Salmon only lives in cold waters and has much more fat tissue than most other fish in order to survive in frigid climates. Some entries even tell you the general temperament of the animals you've encountered, such as whether they're likely to run away or attack if approached.
"So what?" you may be asking. "Why does this matter? If the biological diversity in Zelda doesn't add to the plot or gameplay, what does any of this matter?"
Something I love about Zelda is that, despite the circumstances, nothing about it feels urgent. Anyone who has ever played BOTW or TOTK knows that it's a pretty apocalyptic scenario, and the game makes an effort to convey the mortal peril that looms over every character, regardless of where they live or their personal circumstance. But when you're just wandering through a grove in the Depths in a peaceful part of the map, or walking down a trail in Faron, it's easy to forget that. There are still parts of this place that feel as if they've stayed untouched by malice, undisturbed by the incomprehensible threat that's stolen the castle straight from the ground. More than that, while animals do have a respawn cycle, many of them don't exist solely for the player's convenience. Why take the time or effort to kill, for example, a Red-Tusked Boar, when you could kill a Water Buffalo and get more meat from it? Why bother to kill Snowcoat Fox when you could find a pack of Cold-Footed Wolves and take out a few of them instead? You often have to hunt in this game, whether simply to feed yourself or to complete certain quests. But the game includes several animals that it takes more effort to kill than you receive in drops, and some animals drop nothing at all. Those six different kinds of sparrows I mentioned? None of them have different drops. They all drop one tree nut if killed. Sometimes, they don't drop anything at all.
The purpose of Zelda's ecological diversity is a form of environmental storytelling. Hyrule, during the events of BOTW, is a fallen civilization. Characters recount stories of villages and towns reduced to ashes by Ganon, droves of people killed in the aftermath, and swaths of farmland rendered barren. If you explore the Hyrule Castle Town ruins, this is only confirmed, and it's pretty chilling. The ruins of houses, broken and charred wagons, sitting unused, dried-up stone fountains crumbling into dust. In BOTW, it's emphasized that the only reason towns like Hateno and Lurelin were spared was because they were too far away from the castle to be so harshly affected. In TOTK, we know Zelda and Link were attempting to restore Hyrule to its former glory, but TOTK takes place just 5 years after BOTW, and with Hyrule being so huge, it doesn't seem that they got close to their goal. There's also a pretty sparse number of NPCs milling about, and it makes the world feel lonely. Sometimes, in Hyrule's most desolate places, you feel like the only person still alive.
So what is left, if most of Hyrule's people are gone? The animals.
In old town ruins, sometimes deer and boar are poking around in the grass. In BOTW, in the valley full of old, ruined Guardian robots, sometimes a ram can be found grazing. In TOTK, in the most barren parts of Death Mountain's foothills, sometimes you still see Eldin Ostriches trotting about. In a world where the civilization you knew is dying, the animals live on. There's the sense that this is their world. You also get the idea, as the player, that you're supposed to respect the natural world. You're supposed to find beauty in the empty forests in Akkala. You're supposed to hold in awe the shining Necluda Sea, free of fishing boats and teeming with fish, now that there's few people left to hunt them. You're supposed to roam freely in the snowy fields of Hebra without causing disruption, just as the Tabantha Moose does as well. Even though things are terrible, and your objective is to solve the problem that is killing the people of Hyrule, there's the sense that, in some ways, this is the way the world is supposed to be, and it is your duty to leave nature just as you found it, as much as it is to save nature from the peril that Ganondorf threatens it.
Anyway, this was just me braindumping about Zelda. I really love the environment in both BOTW and TOTK, and I think it's a really powerful use of environmental storytelling. My love for these games genuinely helped me to appreciate the real natural world more, too.

Dr. House is some of the best unintentional autistic representation I have seen in popular media
I think the title is a slight overstatement, but I honestly feel this way. I'm not finished with House MD by ANY means so do keep that in mind, but I'm almost finished with season 2 so this is based off what I have seen.
Also: I am aware that there is an episode where they discuss the possibility that House has Asperger's. Obviously that term has fallen out of favor because Asperger was, you know, a Nahtzee, but I am going to emphasize that House has particularly low-support needs. My source is that I'm autistic and this is a topic I'm relatively familiar with. (Also. please take this with a grain of salt because David Shore also created "The Good Doctor" which is a comparatively pretty poor representation of autism, but I'm going to talk about House MD in its own vacuum.)
Lack of knowledge or concern for social cues. I don't really think this needs explaining, but House doesn't seem to have much regard or respect for social norms. He doesn't care much for social approval or maintaining relationships. I don't necessarily characterize this as specifically being an autistic trait, because this can greatly vary, but this is something I see in myself and other autistic people.
Strong sense of justice and morals. I see a lot of people calling House a "sociopath" simply because he isn't particularly empathetic. But the word sociopath gets thrown around a lot and it really doesn't characterize him well at all. I would argue that House feels cognitive empathy rather than the more emotional sense of empathy that most people experience, but equating empathy and morality is a big no-go. House has little concern for some ethical principles, as the show points out pretty often, but House is never looking to hurt anybody. House is always pretty dry and easily annoyed, but the only time we see him openly angry and upset is when someone endangers a patient. When Chase fucks up the angiogram, potentially putting a woman's life in danger, he holds it against him for ages. And in "The Mistake," when a woman dies and it has to be determined whose fault it was, House yells at Chase in the middle of the lobby over his negligence. Also, House does actually have empathy when it's necessary. He typically softens himself around younger patients and will make an effort to be calm, and when Stacy admits that she and Mark have been fighting and becomes upset, he tries to help her calm down and doesn't try to make the situation about himself. When he thinks that his "nemesis" from school is faking the results of his migraine medicine, he goes out of his way to prove that he's right - partially because, yeah, he wants to be right and get Weber back - but also because he sees this as cheating, and knows it's ultimately harming people.
Very few, specific interests. House doesn't seem to have a lot that he's interested in. His job is one of them, because he gets joy and satisfaction out of solving medical problems. It's also established that he's deeply invested in General Hospital and monster trucks (although I wasn't sure if that was a House thing or a Wilson thing? But he seemed pretty excited about it too). Other than that, he doesn't have many obvious or noteworthy things he's interested in.
Difficulty maintaining interpersonal relationships. Wilson is House's only friend, and House seems to be (mostly) content with that. He cares about other people, in his own strange way, but he consistently struggles to create and maintain personal relationships, whether because of his disregard for social niceties or because of his fear of vulnerability. Again, this may not necessarily be in relation to autism, but it's worth noting.
Odd speech patterns. I'm sick of media making it seem like all autistic people can't comprehend sarcasm. It is common for autistic people to take things literally, but autistic people also sometimes use sarcasm and metaphors more than the average person in verbal communication. I do this all the time. House is constantly saying weird, offbeat things, or making strange, vague metaphors, especially when he's deep in thought.
Stimming. Throwing his ball at the wall. Pacing. Spinning his cane around. Tapping his cane on the floor. Spinning it like a baton when he's alone in the room and trying to think. Sometimes he also nods his head back and forth when he's thinking.
Routine. This one is a little hard to spot, because House actually does seem to thrive when things are changing or new things happen. I see this mostly in House wearing the same things all the time. He's usually wearing some button-up and a blazer/jacket over it, and typically jeans and the same pair of shoes. The shoes are most likely for his comfort, but sometimes autistic people like to wear the same things a lot because it's what's most comfortable or they don't have to worry about unpredictability. Also, it seems like he eats the same thing a lot, since everyone knows he gets a dry Reuben sandwich.
This is just what I noticed and based on my personal experiences as an autistic person. This doesn't mean I think the show discusses autism in the most graceful or meaningful way - I just really like to break down my favorite characters and analyze them.
