Clinical Trial to Investigate whether Hypertension Drug Ameliorates COVID-19 Severity

ACE inhibitor drugs like Ramipril are widely used for various cardiovascular conditions; researchers want to see if they might also provide benefit to patients infected by SARS-CoV-2

Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine have launched a clinical trial to investigate whether a drug approved for treating high blood pressure, heart failure and diabetic kidney disease might also reduce the severity of COVID-19 infections, lowering rates for intensive care unit admissions, the use of mechanical ventilators and all-cause mortality.

The trial will be randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled, the gold standard for clinical trials. It will involve multiple sites, with the University of California San Diego as coordinating institution. Up to 560 participants will be recruited, either presenting with COVID-19 symptoms at emergency departments or currently hospitalized with the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. The trial is expected to run one year.

“There are no approved, proven treatments yet for COVID-19, which has infected millions worldwide and killed nearly 200,000, with the end of the pandemic nowhere in sight,” said the study’s principle investigator Rohit Loomba, MD, professor of medicine and director of the NAFLD Research Center at UC San Diego School of Medicine. “We’re investigating whether drugs called ACE inhibitors might be part of the remedy.”

UC San Diego Health makes measurable progress addressing COVID-19 testing shortage through multiple partnerships and rapidly growing in-house testing. Success has meant more testing for more patients, first responders and other health systems.

“I think we’re getting to the point, with our increasing testing capacity, that we can start figuring out how to use testing as a weapon to reverse the pandemic,” said Steve Gonias, MD, PhD, chief of pathology services for UC San Diego Health and chair of the Department of Pathology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. “More test results will start to create a clearer picture of what we want to do next, what we want to happen next.”

New Studies Investigate How COVID-19 May Impact Breast Milk and Pregnancy

Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine are launching a pair of studies to answer critical questions regarding the roles COVID-19 may play in breast milk and pregnancy.

The first study, led by Lars Bode, PhD, principal investigator and director of UC San Diego’s Larsson-Rosenquist Foundation Mother-Milk-Infant Center of Research Excellence (MOMI CORE), will try to answer the questions, Is COVID-19 transmitted via human milk and can breast milk protect infants from COVID-19? ?

The second study, led by Christina Chambers, PhD, MPH, professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine and director of Organization of Teratology Information Specialists, will focus on the short-and long-term effects of the novel coronavirus in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Les fluoroquinolones sont des antibiotiques très utilisés à travers le monde. Leur utilisation est associée à un risque connu de pathologies tendineuses [...]

Un lien entre l’utilisation de fluoroquinolones et le risque de dissection ou d'anévrisme aortique a été cherché dans le cadre de cette étude nationale suédoise de cohorte en comparant l’usage des fluoroquinolones à celui d’un autre antibiotique : l’amoxicilline.

It’s Friday, which means it’s time to showcase another frontispiece! This one comes from the 1690 edition of Anton Nuck’s Sialographia et ductuum aquosorum anatome nova. Nuck (1650-1692) earned his medical degree at the University of Leiden, where he later became Professor of Anatomy. He pioneered a method of injecting marker substances into the salivary glands via their ducts and blood vessels, which he referred to as “sialography.”

In this frontispiece, the figure crowned with a laurel wreath holds a book open to the motto Nosce te ipsum: Know thyself. This phrase can be read as a summation of the purpose of anatomical investigation: that in developing an understanding of the human body, we will come to know ourselves.
