This piece is finally reaching the stage where the layers are coming together and making sense. When I first start a new encaustic painting it really does just look a mess. But little by little as the layers fuse and filter light, I’m finally rewarded. Do not confuse the versatility of wax with being a speedy process! For a large piece worked on wood like this one, patience is key. I go several layers of brushing on wax, sometimes manipulating it with an iron, and zapping it with the blowtorch to fuse. After I’m satisfied to a point with the color work, then I use the heat gun to slowly heat up all the layers in place as they are - and that’s when the big magic happens. It is a long, almost meditative process - it can’t be rushed - that only ends in gooey disaster! Flashback Friday to this encaustic study - “Along River’s Edge” 15”x20” encaustic on reinforced canvas. People always comment on this one, and it cracks me up because this wasn’t supposed to be a finished piece or anything. I was just learning new techniques with the painting iron, so I did this fast study one evening using only wax and the iron, got down what I needed to know, (pretty sure it had to do with dry vs. wet rocks) and forgot about it.
