My encaustic art piece, with Dorje Tröllö. The incendiary holder of the Three Terrible Oaths: Whatever happens; may it happen! Whichever way it goes; may it go that way! There is no purpose! Ngak’chang Rinpoche comments: Whatever happens; may it happen, means that we do not make attempts at surreptitious deals with reality in which we delude ourselves that our practice will allow us to ‘live happily ever after’. Whichever way it goes; may it go that way, means that when we fall from the towering cliff of birth – we do not pretend that the end result of that fall is not death. There is no purpose, means that there is no one overriding, overarching, all inclusive – ‘purpose’. Reality is simply the dance of emptiness and form and compassion is the recognition that everything is its own purpose of itself. Each moment of reality is perfect as it is.

When Numbers in Color went to the Albright Knox Museum in 1959, Jasper Johns made a little version for himself on the back of a 10x7 in. printing woodblock. It is my favorite Johns.

Fayum mummy-portrait of a lady, 54-68 AD, found in Hawara, Egypt, a site near the Fayum oasis. On display in 2009 exhibition "Roman Imperial Painting", Rome. (AP Photo/Pier Paolo Cito)
The Fayum portraits date to the Imperial Roman era, from the late 1st c. BC or the early 1st c. AD onwards. Recent research suggests their production ended in the middle of the 3rd c. AD. They are survivors of the panel painting tradition of the classical / Greco-Roman world, continued into Byzantine, Eastern Mediterannean, and Western traditions in the post-classical world, including the local tradition of Coptic iconography.

New sculpture with encaustic (pigment and beeswax), the effect is similar to ancient Roman glass. The surface shimmers as you move in front of the piece.
