Do you sew? I love sewing, it’s kind of instant results taking hours as opposed to 25 balls of wool needed to make a jumper over a longer (but still rewarding) period of time. I’ve been sewing since I was in primary school and would definitely still class myself as a beginner or knowing the basics, don’t give me a button hole or a zip, I can do it but you’ll see my eyes glaze over if you do! Since my injury it’s a lot more difficult, I need to wait until my hand is strong, there is nothing else that takes higher priority and afterwards I need several days to rest my hand. I’m lucky, Michael and Lil are really encouraging, they love to see me enjoying things that before my accident I loved doing. They often cut the fabric out for me, get the sewing machine out and plug it in, hang the fabric out neatly for me after it’s been washed. All these gentle acts of kindness and encouragement because they know how rewarding and independent it makes me feel, just to create something to wear or something for our family. Looking around our cosy cottage their is so much I handmade before my accident, so many things I’ve created for Lil when she was little, I’m grateful. Following my creativity, it’s probably not perfect but it’s made with love and isn’t that the most important thing. I dont Understand...

This is a quote from Barrett Holmes Pitner. I’m taking it out of context – I just came across it in a book called The Crime Without a Name - Ethnocide and the Erasure of Culture in America. I haven’t finished it yet but so far, it’s excellent.

I bring it up today because I think these words also relevant to a regular creative practice. If we lack the language to articulate our inner thoughts, then processing them is difficult, if not impossible.

The process of writing forces us to find language – direct or indirect – to express some of these ideas. Others will never translate adequately into words, and this is where other types of creativity come in. We can use various mediums to express ourselves, which is the first step to processing complex emotions.
