Hard to believe 1980 was almost 50 years ago. So much cool stuff crammed into one decade. Who remembers taping stuff before we had the world at our fingertips? What a time to be alive.

David Lynch, and in Defense of Gaga, the artist
youtube
I recently watched BeKindRewind's assessment of Gaga's movie career thus far, which then led me to watching her new music video (I'm two weeks behind), and while watched it, I felt I was witnessing a culmination of everything she's done in her pop career honed to complete perfection in one video. It was the same feeling I got while rewatching Twin Peaks: The Return (still mourning Lynch) Episode 8 Gotta Light? In the Return the Trinity test explosion scene felt like a culmination of everything Lynch had done at that point - I saw Eraserhead and Lost Highway in it- and even the OG Dune, right up to his first film, "Six Men Getting Sick" which was basically just a very disturbing moving painting with an alarm blaring through it, whereas the Trinity test scene has Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima cutting through the entire thing like the aural equivalent of a knife screeching across a window. He was creating an atmosphere and a feeling which was a strength of his and what made him an amazing filmmaker and a cut above just "very good" directors like Christopher Nolan.
According the the reviews of David Lynch's movies at the time, his work in the 90s was either derided, or just plain didn't get the credit it deserved (Fire Walk with Me's reception is shameful). It was more in-vogue to love Quentin Tarantino or David Fincher, the ~cool~ directors of the time. It was an irony-filled era in the zeitgeist, whereas David Lynch was always completely sincere, and no matter how violent or surreal his films got, he treated the victims in his stories with complete sensitivity to let us know these weren't faceless unreal victims, that whatever bad things that happened to these people had major repercussions on the person's life and psyche, and that violence was a serious and evil thing.
I think Gaga is similar in some ways not only with her sincerity and surrealism, but with her trajectory with critics. This said, it's like, no one expected David Lynch to just suddenly change tract and become a completely different filmmaker with every film he made, like many seem to expect from Gaga (P4K for instance), but after further reading, I've noticed this is a running theme with the critiques of her, much like how they keep wanting to call her dated just for continuing to work with electronic music in her pop albums. I wonder if some of them expect her to also mimic whatever random subgenre of a subgenre is trending, not even having a thought that maybe those sounds might not appeal to her personally as an artist. It's like, no one expected Monet to start painting gothic Goya-type paintings instead of the hazy, moody dreaminess that was his style, nor did anyone expect Edward Hopper to stop painting sad people in mundane, modern slice-of-life situations.
I just wonder if it's either a bit of misogyny, or music critics really are the worst, most surface-level critics of any of the arts.

The bekindrewind video about the Lamont/Selden controversy is really informative and gets at the nuances of both actresses careers. The bit about The Dueling Cavalier premiere was wild. I hope a print of that version is found if only for curiosity’s sake.
Enough Goncharov. I want to see more discussion of revolutionary 1928 film The Dancing Cavalier starring Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont (and the uncredited voice of Katherine Selden)

Where I’m at when it comes to online essays
TIRED: Endlessly espousing about micro trends & pop music often not meant to be that deep. So boring & unintentionally vapid, Stan fodder disguised as something important. Fruitlessly trying to find meaning. A new trend cycle dropped? Riveting.

WIRED: Modern day folklore & fairy tales combined with granny mags like News of the World with insane articles about Batboy etc (as long as you don’t take it seriously and become a brain rotted MAGA) Angela Carter meets Eve Babitz. A wild ride brought to you by a bonkers person meant to be enjoyed with a glass of wine, a cig or a joint:

Those old ladies who buy those scandal sheets are onto something methinks. At least a yarn is being spinned.
(Broey Deschanel, Contrapoints & bekindrewind OTOH - you will always be famous)

💬 What’s your favorite decade to read about? I love finding books that take place in the 90’s! That’s when I grew up (yes, I’m THAT old 😅) so the references are always very nostalgic for me. 🤎 Thank you to @melbrownie77 for gifting me this copy! I can’t wait to read it! . . . s u m m a r y : A 90s nostalgia, enemies to lovers novel from Melissa Brown, set in her brand new Spotlight Video Series! She’s always dreamed of living her life in the spotlight. But for now, she’s just another college student working at Spotlight Video. The year is 1994 and Naomi Parker has always dreamed of being in the movies. She’s hoping to make that dream a reality by enrolling in the best performing arts program the Midwest has to offer. But respected programs cost money…lots of it…and her scholarship will only go so far. To make ends meet, Naomi gets a job at the most popular video store on campus, Spotlight Video, and she quickly becomes part of its unique culture. There’s only one employee she can’t stand, the Assistant Manager, Buzzkill Ben. Ben Watson is tired of the employee revolving door at Spotlight Video. He’s tired of people calling in sick, blowing off work, and treating the place like a bar with no cover charge. As the Assistant Manager, he works hard to balance work and school so that he can make something of himself when he graduates. There’s only one problem…he can’t get the newest employee out of his head. She’s just like all the others—she’s constantly late, doesn’t take things seriously and questions his authority. But she’s also nothing like the others, or anyone he’s ever met, and that’s the problem. Will working closely together spark a romantic interest between these very different people, or will Ben be a buzzkill after all? #bekindrewind #melissabrown (at The 90's) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc-1kbEO-qd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
