While I don’t generally subscribe to the idea that only winners get to remember the games, I can’t stop thinking about a Pearl who remembers Double Life going back to Hermitcraft and just… not being able to believe her friends when they say they love her anymore. And no one but Grian knows why. She trusts Scar and Grian and Tango, they treated her with kindness, but with everyone else who was in DL, there’s a sense of unease. They do not love her unconditionally, she knows that now. She’s more closed off from the rest of the Hermits than she was even when she joined on Season 8. And none of them know why.
It’s especially bad with Ren. Grian advises her that no one else remembers the games, but she can’t help but feel even more anger and resentment towards the whole King Ren thing than before. He’s not just the guy who’s forcing them all to do quests for worthless currency, or the guy putting up massive decrees that she vandalizes, he’s the guy who blamed her for something that wasn’t her fault, and then called her a demon with evil in her heart who causes death wherever she goes. And he doesn’t remember doing it. When they defeat him, she takes an extra moment to sneer at his severed head before handing to Gem for her dungeon.
It takes her weeks to look Cleo in the eye again. Cleo who was her tentative friend in Last Life, who hated her in Double Life, who called her unhinged and a crazy ex and asked if she was alright in a tone somewhere between fear and concern. Pearl pulls her for secret Santa and Cleo laughs at her gift and says she loves Pearl for it, and Pearl laughs too, not saying that she knows exactly how far Cleo can be pushed before she doesn’t love her anymore. But Cleo can tell she’s closed off. Cleo is confused by this, her and Pearl aren’t particularly close but she’s never wronged her before has she? She runs through all the interactions they’ve had on Hermitcraft and can’t find anywhere that may have caused Pearl to pull away.
Impulse is complicated. He never directly harmed her, but he had called her crazy. And he had killed her Tilly, her poor poor Tilly who she still wakes up reaching for even when more time has passed out of the game than she spent in it. Impulse is her neighbor and one of her best friends. Impulse calls Soup Group meetings and says Pearl and Gem are his best friends and that he loves them and Pearl struggles to believe him even when she knows that it’s still true to him. She knows he is capable of holding great hatred for her. Pearl may have won the fight but she still knows the feeling of Impulse’s sword cutting into her skin, his voice reminding her that’s she’s alone.
And then Scar wins Secret Life and he remembers. And that’s alright with Pearl because him and Grian had been kind to her. Scar actually apologizes to her for burning down the frogs on her and BigB’s tower and she had never realized how much she wanted someone to apologize to her before that. But it’s the wrong game. She hasn’t cared as much about what people had done in this one. Scar hadn’t ever hurt her the way others had. Pearl thanks him but says it’s not necessary. She says she’s sorry for the whole blowing the terrain up thing. They all do things they regret in the games.
And then Cleo wins Reals Life and that’s a whole other can of worms because of all the people who Pearl didn’t want to remember the games, the person who she keeps killing would be number one. Cleo doesn’t seem as affected by it as Pearl, though. But there’s an edge to her now that wasn’t there before. A genuine distress behind the thick layer of sarcasm. She clings to Scar initially, and Pearl understands. She wishes she had BigB or that any of her Mounders remembered. She has Grian and Scar, but they were late additions to the Nosey Neighbors and Mounders respectively. It’s not the same. She’s glad Cleo gets to have her Clocker back.
It takes a few weeks, but Cleo apologizes to Pearl for what she did in Double Life. She says she doesn’t know what was wrong with her, that they didn’t believe anything they said, it just felt right to say it in the moment. It’s not an excuse they say, and they’re so sorry. They had been avoiding Pearl because they felt bad and they felt hurt by everything.
It’s everything Pearl has ever wanted to hear and it hurts more to hear it than anything else. She doesn’t want this apology two years later. She’s moved on (no she hasn’t). But Pearl thanks her for it, and gives an apology in turn. She says she’s sorry for leaving for the nether in Double Life (she isn’t, but she should still say it), sorry that they always end up betraying each other, sorry that she keeps killing her. She says she loves Cleo and wants them to get along and Cleo agrees. They both promise to stand by each other in the next game, and they do.
And then Joel wins Wild Life and he remembers and Pearl doesn’t know what to do with their history. Does she say she’s sorry for the way she killed him in Last Life? Does she try to explain that she was going to return his chest plate in Double Life before he killed her? Does she avoid him, let him cool off from their rivalry in Wild Life? But instead the conversation they have is mostly about Secret Life, oddly enough. She goes to him and he tackles her in a hug. He thanks her, and she’s taken aback, but he remembers how much she had wanted him to get to the end in Secret Life. Mounders for life, right? Pearl has forgotten that even though the games cause great pain, there are moments of great joy for her too.
She thinks, maybe, that if people’s first instinct when they remember is to apologize, is to thank her, is to love her, then maybe Double Life isn’t a sign that they don’t actually want her. Maybe it’s just a sign that the games suck.

Sooo Uhh..Why wont I move onto Wild life—WHY DID I GO BACK TO DOUBLE LIFE RELATED SHIZ DAMNIT!
•-This A ShinyDuo Fic-•
Scarlet's Return
The familiar hum of Pearl’s Hermitcraft base filled the air, the steady warmth of lanterns casting soft, flickering shadows against the walls. Pearl lay still, her breathing shallow as her senses slowly returned. The texture of her bed, the faint clinking of nearby machinery—it all felt distant, like a half-remembered dream.
She blinked, the sight of her crown catching her eye immediately. It sat on the bedside table, gleaming gold with its cold, unyielding presence. The winner's crown. Her prize.
Her stomach turned.
She reached out to it hesitantly, her fingers brushing over the smooth surface. It felt heavier than it looked, as if it carried every decision, every mistake, every piece of herself she’d sacrificed in Double Life—All the alliances she broke-The damage she caused—
She shoved it away, her hand trembling slightly as she pulled back. Her breathing quickened.
A soft sound broke through her spiraling thoughts.
Pearl’s head snapped to the side, her guard instinctively rising. But what she saw wasn’t a threat. It was Gem.
Geminitay was slumped over in a chair next to Pearl’s bed, her red hair messy and falling in front of her face, her circular glasses sitting slightly askew on her nose. She was fast asleep, her arms crossed over her chest, her breathing calm and steady.
Pearl’s throat tightened. She looked back at the crown, her chest heavy with shame. Gem wasn’t part of Double Life. She hadn’t been there to witness what Pearl had done, hadn’t seen her slip into the role of the Villain-. She didn’t know—couldn’t know—the depths Pearl had sunk to in the name of survival and victory.
And yet, she was back here, Traces of regret stayed within her.
The chair creaked softly as Gem shifted, muttering something incoherent under her breath. She stretched, her glasses sliding down her nose before she pushed them back up, her eyes blinking open groggily.
When her gaze landed on Pearl, her expression shifted immediately, her sleepiness replaced with pure relief.
“Pearl–!”
Before Pearl could say anything, Gem scrambled out of the chair and onto the bed, her arms wrapping around her in a tight, bone-crushing hug.
Pearl stiffened, the warmth of Gem’s embrace catching her off guard.
“You’re back!” Gem’s voice was a mix of joy and relief. “I was so worried about you! You were gone for so long, and I—I didn’t know what happened! Are you okay? What happened? Wait—don’t answer that, I’m just so glad you’re here!”
Pearl opened her mouth, but no words came. She stared over Gem’s shoulder, her hands hovering awkwardly in the air.
Gem finally pulled back, her hands on Pearl’s shoulders, inspecting her like a worried older sister. “You look awful,” she said matter-of-factly, though her voice was tinged with concern. “When was the last time you ate? Or slept? Or—”
“I’m fine,” Pearl interrupted, her voice hoarse and quiet.
Gem froze, her eyes narrowing. “No, you’re not..”
“I am.” Pearl insisted, though her voice wavered. She looked away, her jaw tightening. “I’m fine, Gem. I just need—”
“You’re literally not fine!” Gem cut her off, her voice rising slightly in frustration. “Pearl, you’re sitting here looking like the world’s about to collapse, and you expect me to believe you’re fine? Seriously?”
“I said I’m fine!” Pearl’s voice cracked, her fists clenching the blanket.
Gem stared at her for a moment, her expression softening as realization dawned. Without another word, she pulled Pearl into another hug, even tighter than the first.
“Gem—” Pearl tried to protest, her voice muffled against Gem’s shoulder.
“It’s okay..,” Gem whispered, her tone gentle but firm. “Whatever it is, you don’t have to say anything. You don’t have to explain. You’re here now, and that’s what matters.”
Something inside Pearl shattered.
Her hands, which had been clutching the blanket, slowly moved to grip Gem’s back. Her breath hitched, her body trembling as tears spilled over, silent at first but quickly escalating into deep, wracking sobs.
Gem’s arms stayed steady around her, one hand gently running through Pearl’s hair. “It’s okay,” she murmured. “I’ve got you. You’re not alone..”
Pearl couldn’t stop the flood of emotions. Everything she’d bottled up during Double Life—the guilt, the anger, the exhaustion—poured out in waves. She clung to Gem like she was the only thing keeping her afloat.
“-I'm sorry..” Pearl choked out between sobs, her voice barely audible.
Gem pulled back slightly, just enough to look at her, her hands resting gently on Pearl’s arms. “Why are you apologizing Pearlie?” she asked, her tone soft but confused.
“Because…” Pearl struggled to find the words, her gaze dropping to her lap. “I’m not… the same–. Not anymore.”
Gem’s brows furrowed. “Pearl, I don’t know what you went through, but it doesn’t matter to me. You’re still you. You’re still my Pearl..”
Pearl’s breath hitched, her eyes filling with fresh tears. She tried to respond, but her voice failed her.
Gem sighed, her expression softening into a small smile. “Look, I don’t care what happened in that other world. Whatever you did, whatever you went through, it’s over now. You’re back. And I’ll be here for you, no matter what.”
Pearl’s lips trembled. “...–Why?”
Gem raised an eyebrow. “Because I care about you, dummy.” Her voice was light, teasing, but her gaze was filled with unwavering sincerity.
Pearl let out a shaky laugh, a sound halfway between a sob and relief. She reached up, brushing the tears from her face. “You’re… -impossible.”
“And you love me for it..~” Gem said with a cheeky grin.
Pearl’s breath caught. For a moment, she hesitated, but then she nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. “Yeah. I do.”
Gem’s grin softened, and she adjusted her glasses. “Good. Because I’m not going anywhere.”
Pearl looked at her, really looked at her, and for the first time since returning, a small flicker of hope sparked in her chest. Maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t as lost as she thought anymore.
Sooo..Yeps. Now What's next on my list..

Gem playing the game is so near and dear to my heart you don't get it.
She plays the game. She tells Pearl they can one v one but nothing more. She phases through every wildcard without a death. They're all participants in the game but Gem plays.
To her this is nothing. She follows the rules she makes through without as much as a problem. She knows how much it can hurt if you treat it as real. She saw it during empires and during Hermitcraft. It ruins people.
So Gem plays the game.

So I saw a TikTok post saying what if the second-place people could remember the past seasons as punishment for losing and like its rotting my head (if anyone knows who made it lemme know so I can credit them)
Scar lost first. He remembers all of third life, and when double life comes along, he clings to grian. It's desert duo all over again. And then grian cheats, but mind you, grian just had a vague idea of Scar. (cheating is still bad, but also, this is a Minecraft death game; things are weird) He knows Scar, who gets hurt and chases after an allay and loses them so many hearts. But Scar knows grian. His grian. His partner in crime, they had a llama together so he just doesn't get it.
Ren gets second next (last-life), that's why he's so insistent on fixing him and BigBs' alliance during double-life (I actually didn't finish watching Double Life from anyone's perspective, so I’m lacking in their info, sorry). They were the shadow alliance; they had to stay together especially when they share hearts.
Scott gets second on our third series and now he knows he won. And that's a very fun bit of trivia. So limited life he just goes with it. He lets himself have a target on his back. He's won he's gotten second, and he didn't mind that he got 10th it was for Jimmy
Now impulse gets second in our fourth series (limited life) and so when secret life comes along well he wants to win. He's had the taste of victory his allies from different seasons have won. He wants to win. That's his goal.
Pearl gets second in our fifth series (Secret Life). Now, the next series are what make things interesting for her. Because technically, Real life comes before wild life. She's in an alliance with Scott; she wants to fix it. But it's one episode; it's not enough.
Scott gets second again in our sixth season (Real life.) And they can't double his pain (they could but it'd be boring, he's never been good at playing the game) but a bit of torture to their double third place girl, who’s still shiny and new works. Gem gets to remember. This is really shown in the pearl hate. She backstabbed her and maybe its a bit fun for them to watch her torture the girl who also remembers. (and Gem plays the game, they need that)
And now grian got second in our seventh season. (Wildlife) now out next season hasn't happened yet but I mean scar team again maybe, he won with scar. Or does double life cancel that out? I don't know. But like he knows, and that's what important.
Yeah so that's a fun little concept for you writers out there. Or just people who like angst (you can't tell me Grian not remembering scar who remembers him isn't a wonderfully sad concept)

I made a WL leaderboard!! (major spoilers)
I’m fairly confident but, as always, there may be some errors, please let me know if you spot any
Note that I’m giving kill credit even for ambiguous deaths (someone dying to a wildcard because of someone else’s actions (ie hiding someone’s triviabot or turning their snail invisible)), zombie kills are accredited to whoever gave the orders, and Impulse’s teleportation trap kills are counted as his regardless of who got the final hit
