Early spring day. Sun displaying colors lost over winter. Quiet city street. A walk to open the mind.

Work in progress

The arch of her back glistened in the bedside lamp light.  I tried to caress her shoulder. She jerked away.  A muffled whimper escaped. I could see her body shiver.  I pulled the covers over her body and climbed out of bed.  The hardwood floor was cold on my feet. I pulled a shirt and jeans on before heading out to the kitchen.

I poured a glass of whiskey, sat down at the kitchen table, and opened the morning paper.  I mindlessly thumbed through articles trying to forget our most recent argument.  Reading the gossip written in the paper I didn’t feel as alone in relationship problems.  There seemed to be many couples fighting to stay apart.

For nearly two weeks all our evenings together ended the same.  Me saying something she found insulting, us fighting and her quietly crying into a pillow.

I spent an hour sitting at the table; sipping my drink, reading the paper and trying to figure out what I said that triggered the fight.  There seems to be no one thing she finds insulting.  I have still not figured out how to avoid the argument.  Instead I sit confused, weary of how well our relationship is.

She confuses me.  Her mind is never settled on a single thought. Too often I’m left with a whimpering girlfriend, trying to understand.

She’s a puzzle too complicated for me but I’m too stupid to put it down.  Everyday I sit at the table going over the pieces still needing placed trying to figure out what I’m missing.  I know someday I’ll find those pieces, I’m just hoping it won’t be too late.

Morning Drinks

The orange morning sun cascades over the brick apartment buildings outside my kitchen window and drips onto the blue Formica table.  The early light cuts through the drifting dust warming my arm as it lay out across the greasy tiled floor.  Rays gleam off my empty glass rattling against the beige walls splashing dull reds, blues, and yellows as I slowly twist the ridged tumbler between my stubby, dirt stained finger and thumb.  The whiskey, long since finished, was all I wanted to remember after a night filled with self-misery and rumination, but the thought of her still sleeping, wrapped in the blanket I left her in, is all my mind can focus on.
