so i just finished tua s4 and i’m seeing everyone’s hatred for it and the ending, but i loved it. doomed by the narrative; they were never meant to be, never meant to live. their very existences were impossibilities and their powers even more so. they were always destined to be sacrifices, since that fucker reggie basically created them for his own selfish reasons—to bring back his alien wife
so let me get crazy for a second and come to the defense of the writing and characterization. the elephant in the room is obviously lila and five, and by extension, diego. another is the nature of five’s decision to lie to lila. i’ll get to both, so bear with me, this is a lot
lila and diego’s marriage was unique and neither of them were good at adequately communicating. they’re both prideful and independent people, and lila calling for a break was probably a good move, if she wasn’t addicted to the drug of fixing the timeline, and if she didn’t run off and get stuck with five for seven years on the subway of doom. i think they both would’ve eventually worked out their own internal struggles, and come back together. diego was more than ready for it, after all.
but seven years with the company of a single person—especially for someone who has known crippling loneliness, and someone who is upset and just wants to be seen by their partner—the romance and the fling between them was not surprising. i saw it coming from a mile away.
i would never and will never sympathize with or defend cheaters. both of them could’ve had some more self restraint, end of discussion. but five has so much love in him. he’s a romantic; and with lila, he truly fell in love with a real person for the first time (so sorry delores, you were a real one). he willingly gave lila all that she felt she was missing from her marriage, and she ate that shit up. she even said it felt weird that she didn’t feel weird about kissing five. she knew what she was doing, and so did five.
and then five’s decision to hide the notebook from lila. his reasoning was understandable, because he was acting out of his own self interest and selfish desire to be with lila, but christ that was a terrible move.
i’m tired but i may add more onto this at some point. i really liked the writing, as fucked up and insane as it was. and i didn’t even mention ben bro

i don't often talk about atla by itself here unless i'm comparing it to spop, but there's something i've been meaning to talk about.
i hate how the fandom reduced Toph to “chaotic murder child” when she's clearly so much more than that.
the thing that especially pisses me off is when fans act like Toph is reckless and stupid, when her WHOLE DEAL is that she's extremely observant and patient when it comes to fighting.
this is what set her apart from other earthbenders, she doesn't just use brute strength to win fights. she concentrates on the sound and vibrations, and she waits for the perfect moment to strike. this was the main reason WHY Toph was one of the best earthbenders.
and the fandom acknowledges that she's the best, but somehow doesn't seem to realize WHY she's the best, when it was practically spelled out for us. Toph isn't the best because she's super strong or muscular, she's the best because she crafted her own form of earthbending that utilizes patience and attention to detail. how do people not understand this?

“Sister Yangchen,” the young monk says patiently. “It’s your twentieth birthday.”

when i first started dabbling in the atla fandom, i thought it was kinda funny how people characterized kyoshi to be this violent, murder-condoning avatar, but after reading the kyoshi novels, there’s so much more depth to that mindset of hers.
big spoilers ahead for the kyoshi novels if you plan to read them! i highly recommend it!
kyoshi, above anything else, is angry. she’s angry at her parents for abandoning her, she was angry that yun was struggling with his avatarhood. she became angry with jianzhu, she became angry when she thought yun was killed. she wasn’t violent, she was hurt and she couldn’t think of where to place it other than to enact revenge. so she made that her goal. kill jianzhu. and believe me you, i was so on board.
most of the avatars’ stories involve them in their youth. aang was 12, kyoshi was 16, yangchen was 17, korra was 17 in season 1. i have so much shit to say about the double standards that the avatars are held at. “you’re too young to understand/to lead a country/to understand the struggle of your people” and then they turn around and beg for the avatar to save their people/save the world/fight a war.
it’s shitty, and avatarhood is a burden to everyone but wan. he chose it, everyone else didn’t. they all just learn to live with it. i’m sure plenty of them love it, like how they say korra was “an avatar that learned to be human” and aang was “a human that learned to be the avatar”
but in their youth, they’re hormonal, they’re ignorant, they’re emotional, etc. they’re figuring out who they are and they’re still figuring out what they want. your desires are shaped and molded by those telling you what to do, and when you grow, you change those desires or you mold them into something more befitting of you.
kyoshi struggled a lot with the realization that she would probably have to kill yun. she loved him. but when she saw the lengths he was going to to enact revenge, she saw herself in him. she saw what she could’ve been and realized that that would only temporarily stop the pain. aang spoke of this when katara and zuko went to go track down the man who killed her mother.
so yes, kyoshi, in comparison to the pacifist aang who wouldn’t even kill a genocidal freak of a firelord, is more violent. she had the motive to do so. but she was a child in pain, a child with power nobody else living possessed. but she had rangi, she had hei-ran, she had the flying opera company. no one burdened with that much power should be alone. they helped set her on track.

the mortifying ordeal of being known
--
I think with Yor being so perceptive, she picks up on little things often (like we saw in ch 103). i believe this would impact loid more so than the usual person, because he is a spy and fakes every part of himself, so to be seen is simultaneously desirable and horrifying. like, it makes him torn between wanting to accept and reciprocate the love, or distancing himself so that it doesn't happen again.
thats mostly what the last panel is about, that dichotomy between 'omg this person noticed this about me, is this love' and 'oh shit this person noticed this about me, is this Doom'
just some thoughts i had🤪
