NEW BEGINNINGS
Here it is, my first post of 2016. Oh the pressure…! I thought it would be interesting to write something about our expectations for the blog and our life in the new year, not because I am a fan of new year’s resolutions, but to measure up what the future holds for this blog and its writers. What I do like, is to look back and set new personal goals.
My dear Luciahas already written her piece,…

I hate sewing. It’s one of those necessary evils that needs to be done every now and again, especially if you own a lot of vintage clothing and are a burlesque performer, like myself. I just lack the patience, though I wish I could sew my own clothes, it would save me thousands. I would probably be writing this from the Bahamas!!
But then again, if I was stationed in the Bahamas I would be missing all the fun to be had in Berlin, especially around Christmas time. Which brings me to last week, when I attended the launch workshop of the newly established Berlin Sewing Salon.
The BSS is the brainchild of Mariya Ivanova, an expat living in Berlin. Mariya is an expert in Costume and Dressmaking with lots of experience working and teaching in London. The concept of the Berlin Sewing Salon is to learn new sewing skills in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Classes are suitable for both beginners and more advanced students, and are taught in English. The workshops cover hand stitching, repairs, alterations, pattern making, embroidery and so on. I thought this concept would be interesting for vintage loving people, so I decided to give it a try.
Mariya, the creator of the Berlin Sewing Salon
(FYI: Stitch and bitch is a phrase that’s been used to describe social knitting groups since the 1940s)
The first class was ‘Make your own Christmas decorations’. What better way to get festive than making my own from scratch (since I can’t seem to locate my stash of Xmas deco), have a bit of Lebkuchen and meet new people? That’s my kind of Sunday!
The Berlin Sewing Salon is homed at Holz Kohlen Koks, an indie art gallery in Neukölln. The place was easy to reach (off the Karl Marx Strasse near Hermannplatz) and was very welcoming, with its wood burning stove, a table full of colourful sewing materials and wood covered walls.
Holz Kohlen Koks on Reuterstr.
The atmosphere was super relaxed, Christmas swing was playing and I was offered a glass of wine and some festive treats. Very soon we all got chatting and started our class. First we got to choose the fabric and some templates to cut (all materials were provided). Then the teacher demonstrated two different kinds of stitches, a basic one and a more advanced one. If I had to do this at home by myself, I would have probably cleaned my whole flat just to avoid the sewing – that’s what I do when I’m daunted by a task, don’t ask me why – but in a social setting and with two hours at hand, I just got on with it without stress. I actually really enjoyed it!
So in less than one hour I made my first beautiful wonky star and learnt a few tips on how to sew straight – that’s not my forte – plus interfacing, fraying and stuffing! Mariya was at hand to advise everyone and we all checked in on our progress. I was then ready to tackle a felt heart using the blanket stitching. Honestly I thought I wouldn’t have the patience to do it, but actually I found it easier than the plain stitch and soon finished my second decoration. I have to say I am proud of my creations!
Concentrating hard!
The two hours flew by really quickly, and I found the whole afternoon rather therapeutic. I really really like the concept of sewing in company, and with a teacher showing you some new things. It makes sewing a relaxing pleasure rather than an annoying task. At 10 Euro when booked in advance the class is a bargain; and it is extremely rewarding. I can’t wait for the upcoming classes in the next few months!
Ongoing regular classes start in January 2016 at:
Holz Kohlen Koks, Reuterstrasse 82, 12053 Berlin
Please check Berlin Vintage Salon for detailed info about upcoming dates.

NEW BEGINNINGS
Oh dear it's been literally AGES since the last time I posted something here. Pardon my silence! I've been concentrating on the Facebook aspect of things and neglected my own blog...shame on me!
Since May the afore mentioned social media platform blocked me and my page, so I will post updates on here, much better anyway!
That means that I can concentrate on blogging and sharing more interesting things here.
First, what have I been doing in the past 2-3 years since I last wrote? I moved to Berlin, toured lots, got a dog, started writing, created new burlesque acts...you will see in the coming weeks ;-)
Let me start with introducing you to something new in my life: the VINTAGE BERLIN GUIDE. The VBG is an awesome blog funded by my friend Lucia Vicente, and I was thrilled when she asked me to be the editor.
There we talk about all things Berlin and vintage lifestyle. So please follow us on www.vintageberlinguide.com
We also do city tours combined with VINTAGE SHOPPING (another passion of mine), so check us out and we will take you on an unforgettable view of Berlin!
Finally, starting next month, I will tour again with the show Let’s Burlesque, of which I’ve been part since its beginning. 2016 will be a big year! More info on dates and about the show here
And finally, don’t forget to subscribe to my blog for more burlesque, HoneyLulu and vintage related musings.
Love,
Honey

HoneyLulu featured on Vintage Sleaze
I have been following the blog Vintage Sleaze for a while. This super cool blog is the go-to for lovers of American vintage erotica of the 50s and 60s, Bettie Page fans and pin-up art, with several pictures and articles being published every day.
At the same time, I came across the blog True Burlesque, which "TELLS ALL THE GLAMOUR THAT WAS NEVER THERE! MOBSTERS, SMOKE-FILLED DUMPS AND LIVING OUT OF A TRUNK. LET'S DANCE!"
Reading this blog, I was intrigued. The obscure stories are extremely well documented, and the writer clearly knows a lot about the history of burlesque in the USA. But I wasn't sure of the writer's motives, so I decided to write to him and discuss the topic.
It turned out the writer is Jim Linderman, who also writes the Vintage Sleaze blog. We had an interesting chat and he told me he is a big fan of burlesque and that a lot of new burlesque performers and fans seem unaware of the seediness of some of the old burlesque establishments.
This topic is dear to me, and whilst us burlesque performers love glamour and 'the glamour of long gone eras', a lot of the glamour we see in the past is an illusion. Like Jim said, burlesque dancers were faced everyday with sexism, dive bars and mobsters. Having read the autobiography of Gypsy Rose Lee myself, I know that her beginnings were very humble and far from glamorous.
From my experience, things are better nowadays. I have performed on small and big stages, some extremely glamorous, some less, but I mostly have had pleasant experiences.
To come back to the Vintage Sleaze blog, after our e-mail exchange, Jim Linderman asked me to be featured as one of the contemporary performers on his blogs.
This is the wonderful article that came up:

HoneyLulu T-shirts now available!!
Hello my lovelies, I am aware I haven't been updating my news section regularly this year, mainly as I've been jet setting around the world shaking my tush! Updating my blog will be  one of my new year's resolutions.
In any case, I am so excited to announce that HoneyLulu t-shirts are now available to order. They were designed by iconic pin-up artist Claudia Hek from Holland. I love her work and I am thrilled to have had her design my Girl in a Teacup t-shirts.
Here they are modelled by the fantastic Aerialistas, Seattle's own aerial troupe.
Tumblr media
The t-shirts are available in MEN'S sizes M, L and XL
For girls, at the moment I have only XS in stock, they were so popular that I ran out of other sizes. I will let you know when they will be back in stock.
The shirts are a good heavyweight cotton, in black.
To order your 'Girl in a teacup' t-shirt please write to [email protected] stating the quantity and the size, I will then send you an invoice through PayPal.

Hello and a happy new year to you all!
Last month I did a photoshoot with Sabine Schoenberger, whom I previously worked with before (see blog post below). In this instance I was keen to explore late 50s/early 60s aesthetics, which are different from what I had worked with before, i.e. cheesecake pin up, 1940s glamour and the 1920s and 30s.
The shoot resulted in images and a look which are more raw and sexually charged than before. I wanted to portray a cheeky glamourpuss who drinks, smokes and flirts and is having fun. I am planning a new act to go with these aesthetics so watch this space!
I hope you enjoy :)

These fabulous photos of the show 'Youkali' were taken by Sabine Schoenberger, at Friedrichsbau Variete', Stuttgart, in November 2011.
Sabine is a favourite photographer of mine, as we worked together three years ago, with my giant teacup prop. Her photographs capture the soul of everyone she works with, and her work oozes femininity and sensuality from every pore.

HoneyLulu features in the production "Youkali", Friedrichsbau Variete', Stuttgart Nov 2011 to 11th Feb2012
Hello everyone,
apologies for my long silence, but times have been pretty hectic at the HoneyLulu headquarters. I am very pleased to announce that last October I was cast for playing the role of the chamber maid in Friedrichsbau Variete's current show 'Youkali', which runs in Stuttgart until February 11th 2012.

I will be performing every day until February 2012, so don't miss the opportunity to watch this fabulous show! Below are some details about 'Youkali. The way to Paradise":
In this lascivious revue, we enter an imaginary world where the cast takes us on a journey to a paradise-like place, but where one will never arrive. “Youkali”, the tango composed by Kurt Weill – performed by the glamorous Evi and accompanied by her fabulous pianist Mr. Leu – tells the story of a journey to our inner self beyond time and space.
The production “Youkali” is set in a glamorous hotel between the 1920s and 1930s, where the beautiful people, aristocrats, artists, hotel staff  and comedians lodge.
On arrival of the guests, bizarre scenes take place, where different characters interact. Guests arrive for the “Show of the year”, full of glitz and glamour, which will take place in the grand hotel lobby.
Expect comedy, wit, glamourous costumes and fabulous performances.
Lodgers at the Hotel Youkali are:
Evi & das Tier – Music Comedy Host
The Aerialistas – double aerial hoops and dance
Gilles Le Leuch – Diabolo-juggling
Elena Borodina – Handstand-artist
Honey Lulu – Burlesque dancer

Lady Burlesque show
Last month I was thrilled to be invited as a guest performer for the Italian TV show Lady Burlesque on Sky. This is the first European TV show entirely dedicated to burlesque.
I was honoured to be one of the five judges of the competing girls, after which I performed my teacup routine, with a new teacup built for me!
The whole experience was lots of fun and here is a link to the footage of my performance:
