Also, look up the band Tiger Lillies, if you like this sort of thing! Exactly their aesthetic & vibe - with emphasis on making work about the vileness of humanity.
And the performer Le Pustra. Extremely talented and beautiful.
Also there are drag artists are doing stuff like this, too! I can’t think of any exactly like 1927 or the Tiger Lillies, but Sweaty Eddie, Andro Gin, Evah Destruction, and Cadaver Daddy-o all give me similar vibes. Try Sasha Velour’s Nightgowns show, and ofc Dragula if you haven’t already!
Please, who is doing theatre like the theatre des vampires rn? I need to see something like this live. I also gotta create theatre like this! I feel so alive after watching their performance.

RuPaul's Drag Raceemploys a panel of judges, including RuPaul, Michelle Visage, and a host of other guest judges, who critique contestants' progress throughout the competition. Allen Jones
jones like to explore the idea that ‘there are elements of male and female within everybody’s character’: the blurring of lines between the sexes. Hermaphrodite and Man Woman are both early paintings, made six years before the controversial sculptures, and with their bold colours and abstract figures they can be seen as joyful liberations of gender. Today, the idea that gender is a spectrum is not radical (and the term 'hermaphrodite' has been retired, with 'intersex' used for people who have both male and female sexual anatomy). When Jones made these paintings, several years before the 1967 Act, the idea that we all contain elements of ‘male’ and ‘female’ was decades away from the zeitgeist, and yet this ‘intermingling of the sexes’ is a theme that resonates throughout his work.
Jones was influenced by the writings of Nietzsche, and in particular the idea that we all need elements of ‘male’ and ‘female’ to achieve full artistic expression. An idea ahead of its time, overshadowed by the furore surrounding Jones' later sculptures.

Martha Wilson
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“As women, we find ourselves performing all the time to meet society and the culture’s expectations about what we’re supposed to do, how we’re supposed to look, what we’re supposed to think,” Wilson explained in a 2015 interview. Her work dissects these issues of gender identity and beauty ideals: In video and photographic performance pieces, the chameleonic Wilson transforms herself into a drag queen, traditional housewife, lesbian, and a series of American first ladies. Her most recent installation in that series, Martha meets Michelle halfway (2014), features Wilson impersonating Michelle Obama.
Wilson has been active in New York’s avant-garde art scene since the 1970s and was a founding member of DISBAND, a conceptual punk band of women artists that has included Barbara Kruger and Ilona Granet, among others. She also founded and continues to direct Franklin Furnace, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit organization that preserves and advocates for avant-garde art.
Olivera Parlic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Olivera Parlic is a Serbian artist who transforms everyday items into subversive sculptures. In many of her works, she displaces objects associated with domesticity, questioning the expected role of women in the home. In others, fetishistic sculptures are fashioned from hair, rubber gloves and high heels, highlighting – rather than suppressing – women’s sexual desire.
Joe Hesketh’s
Tumblr media
Joe Hesketh’s large, narrative paintings challenge clichés of women. Instead of portraying so-called ‘ideal’ figures, she paints strong women in all shapes and forms. In many of her images, she uses exaggerated, cartoon-like proportions to poke fun at the overly-sexualised representation of women in art history.
Le Pustra
Tumblr media
Le Pustra is a self-acclaimed singer, model, bon vivant and muse, Le Pustra merges the lines between fashion, cabaret and performance art. In addition to being featured in Vogue and Playboy, the creative has also performed at London Fashion Week as well as Berlin Alternative Fashion Week. Le Pustra consistently transcends boundaries at Kabarett der Namenlosen, a show which revives the tropes of 1920s Weimar Berlin in decadently erotic performances that carry a sex positive message. By marrying fashion with performance and cabaret, Le Pustra’s work radically alters conventions of beauty, glamour and sexuality.
