Railways and Transport through time - a short project by Harry
Harry has spent some time recently learning about our trains and railways and other transport, and how they have grown and developed over time.
Harry had a some knowledge on transport, and how they were once operated, but wanted to learn more.
To expand on that knowledge, Harry studied a chronological timeline that showed how the railways have grown and developed over time.
He looked at some of the important people involved in the railways such as George Stephenson and James Watt,
and at some of the famous trains and railways in history.
Harry learnt the advantages and disadvantages to each transport.
Harry researched the materials used in the rail tracks and the trains.
Check out our Transport board on Pinterest, and our saved videos on YouTube.

Pancake Day 25th Feb 2020 & Pawprint Badge: Pancake Day.
Harry enjoyed making pancakes for everyone this year.
Earlier this year we discovered the Pawprint challenges, pancake day challenges were available so made sure to complete everything to win that badge!
The suggested challenges for Harry's age were to complete 1 challenge from each of the 4 sections + 2 more of your choice.
Making pancakes and drawing out his name counted as the craft challenge.
From the games challenge, Harry flipped his pancake the highest. For the second (extra challenge) we timed how many pancake flips we could all do in one minute.
The food challenge saw Harry converting a baked bean tin can into a min stove in which to cook some pancakes.
Choosing from the other section, Harry found out some interesting facts about pancake day and shared them with friends.
As the extra challenge, Harry thought about what he was thankful for and made a poster to show this, sharing with his friends.
Harry was excited to receive his pancake day badge.
Check out our Pancake day Pinterest board for activity and craft ideas, games, around the world etc.
Our YouTube channel has a section of saved videos, facts and fun to do with pancake day. Check it out here.

Moon exhibition & Pawprint challenge: Astronaut Adventures.
This month saw Museum of the Moon, the touring art work of UK artist Luke Jerram.
We visited twice to see this. Once during the day and once in the evening.
Everyone enjoyed drawing their own interpretation of the moon.
For the Pawprint challenges, Harry completed the Astronaut adventures pack. The suggested challenges for Harry's age were 1 activity from each section +2 of your choice.
For the other challenge, Harry took part in a star gazing event. We downloaded the Star count pack from CPRE's star count website and had a go at finding Orion. Also from this section as the extra challenge, Harry found some interesting facts about astronauts. The challenge stated to find 3, but Harry loves all things Space, and discovered plenty more.
Check out our Pinterest board on Space.
We also used YouTube and have saved some of the videos Harry watched - here.

Learning foreign languages.
Harry loves learning about foreign languages, for Spanish and French we used twinkl to print some posters and word sheets to help learn the language.
Some of the sheets are placed around the home so that they were on display, making it easier to learn the word as they are always there to view when walking past and so on.
Harry uses a workbook for foreign languages and so I often write things in there for him to complete as well as learning the language orally.
Check out our languages board on Pinterest!
We also play games to make learning a language fun.
NB this post does not show the entire contents of Harry's languages work.

Vikings
Harry loves anything to do with British and World History.
Harry often chooses his own work for History. I think that it is important that Harry chooses to work on something that he is interested in, especially on the subject of History as he enjoys it so much. He works better when he enjoys what he is learning. It can often be a struggle for him to take it in otherwise.
Harry used books and google to research the topic and printed some pictures to stick in his workbook.
Check out our Viking board on Pinterest!
Harry spent all week learning and writing about the Vikings, and was pleased with what he wrote.
Harry recycled an old object he had made to make a viking weapon.
^ old object that Harry reused.
Some of the websites Harry used for research are below
Wikipedia
History.com
Live science
We also used some books from our own personal collection and from the library.
NB this post does not show Harry's full written work on Vikings.

Shorne country park, Winter 2019
Shorne country park isn't too far for us to walk from Strood. An easy 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes, depending on whether we turn right down the long hill on crutches lane for a very scenic route, or carry on past it and go over the roundabout, walking along the path at the side of the A2 then over the bridge at Park Pale which eventually leads to the main entrance of the park itself.
Theres a big park for the kids, a fishing lake and lots of paths throughout the woods for walks or bike rides.
Theres even some cattle at the far end if you're there on the right day.
It's a nice day out, with plenty of opportunity to learn about the wildlife, trees, and so on.

Autumn wellness journal
I've seen so many posts lately about these journals that I decided to go ahead and join in.
This is my starting page so I can see what month I am in.
My drawing isn’t the best, a child could probably do better - haha! -but it’s mine, so...
What is the wellness journal? Its basically a book - big, small, plain, lined, it doesn't matter - that you write your feelings in, things you're grateful for, struggled with, overcome, challenges and so on.
It can include photos, drawings, poems, whatever you want really.
It's kind of like a self-help, therapy book to help you become a happier, kinder, more thoughtful, less stressed, all round better version of you I guess. A chance to take a step back and get to know yourself in the present. A way to see where you are right now and how you can move forward with things that are holding you back and so on - well that's my take on it anyway!
It’s not always happy days for everyone, and I have down days just like everyone else - you know the days where you don’t have enough money for something, or the kids want to go out but you can’t afford it, someone is ill etc, and just one little thing can lead to one more negative thing, and next minute you’re on a downer for days, or weeks for some. This is a great way to log things and move on.
I’ve said before about keeping positive and reducing stress where possible, you know, things like saying no more often, thinking about priorities to reduce stresses, staying away from toxic people and so on, but its so easy to fall back into bad habits and I need this right now on my journey.

Knife Angel visit
The first of our planned educational workshops this school year was to Rochester Cathedral to learn about the knife angel they have on display throughout the month.
^ the knife angel stands 25 foot tall.
The 1 hour workshops were advertised to schools but a simple email from myself got a group of us home edders booked in.
The Knife Angel is recognised as the National Monument against violence and aggression.
It was created using over 100 000 blunted, seized and confiscated knives!
There was a pledge book next to it and small section downstairs, it showed just some of the people affected by knife crime.
^ just one of the many pieces shown downstairs.
I was quite surprised and saddened by just how many people have been affected by knife crime. You hear about it and you read about it but when it's all brought together like this, it really hits home.
For more information on when you can view this spectacular piece of work can be found here and for more information on the piece from the local newspaper, click here
If you've been affected by a crime, reported or not, you can visit victim support to find support here.

Guildhall Museum, Rochester
^ The Guildhall Museum was built in 1687.
It stands at one end of the high street, not far from the river. It's free to enter.
The museum hasn't changed much over the years, usually just one room upstairs that changes periodically to show something new.
Theres a variety of worksheets for anyone wanting to use them around the museum. We often fill them in.
We visit at least twice a year, usually the first time is for learning purposes and the second, because we happen to be passing by during the school half term while out and about or with friends.
Throughout the school half terms they have free arts and crafts upstairs for all ages. It's always good fun.
More info on the museum can be found here
