oh hey omg! sorry for not answering this sooner, haven’t been around on tumblr that much. for recent artworks I’ve definitely enjoyed employing more of an illustrative style with more motifs and...props, I guess, is one word for it? otherwise just experimenting with dissolve layers in PS. it’s been a lot of fun!

How did you get those pixel effects in the background? DId you draw them individually? ;-;

NOOOO omg I used a layer mode in photoshop called dissolve!

really shitty tutorial impromptu below the cut ???

I copied the character set, merged the layers, added a fill colour & blurred the silhouette so I got something like this: 

I then set the layer mode to “dissolve” which is directly under the default setting and adjusted the opacity so I got something similar to this: 

When you zoom in, though, it looks pretty harsh, so what I like to do is copy the layer, blur the copy, and reduce the opacity of the first layer so you achieve this sort of “glow” effect. 

If you need to adjust the radius of the dissolve, then adjust the initial blurring of the layer OR just adjust the opacity of the dissolve layer itself. You can also just make the layer mode dissolve right at the start and adjust the gaussian blur after the fact! 

i..guess you could also just erase the bits you don’t want

By buffering the layer with more low-opacity blurs you get a much softer look, which works well if you want to do low effort magical effects or a really intense night sky type look. I would also recommend duplicating some layers, giving them a feathered mask and changing the color!
