One way to be an ally to disabled queer people:
If you want to attend a pride event, ask about their accessibility plans and policies.
Ask about their covid policies. Ask if they are accessible to mobility aid users. Ask if they will have strobe lights, if there will be bathrooms, if there is water. Make the event planners consider who they may have left out, even if the person being left out isn't you. Have your friends ask as well. Help create a demand. Help get conversations started. Help people see where things could be more accessible.
Because when we, the disabled, ask these questions? We're much more likely to get ignored, and much less likely to be heard when we raise hell.
So help us raise hell when we need it. Demand to know why your local Pride event isn't requiring masks, or is charging for water, or doesn't have wheelchair ramps, or whatever other accessibility issue you catch.
Stop leaving us behind. We need your fucking help.

Every person need to be taught disability history
Not the “oh Einstein was probably autistic” or the sanitized Helen Keller story. but this history disabled people have made and has been made for us.
Teach them about Carrie Buck, who was sterilized against her will, sued in 1927, and lost because “Three generations of imbeciles [were] enough.”
Teach them about Judith Heumann and her associates, who in 1977, held the longest sit in a government building for the enactment of 504 protection passed three years earlier.
Teach them about all the Baby Does, newborns in 1980s who were born disabled and who doctors left to die without treatment, who’s deaths lead to the passing of The Baby Doe amendment to the child abuse law in 1984.
Teach them about the deaf students at Gallaudet University, a liberal arts school for the deaf, who in 1988, protested the appointment of yet another hearing president and successfully elected I. King Jordan as their first deaf president.
Teach them about Jim Sinclair, who at the 1993 international Autism Conference stood and said “don’t mourn for us. We are alive. We are real. And we’re here waiting for you.”
Teach about the disability activists who laid down in front of buses for accessible transit in 1978, crawled up the steps of congress in 1990 for the ADA, and fight against police brutality, poverty, restricted access to medical care, and abuse today.
Teach about us.

When I was twenty I was almost shot by a police officer because of my mental illness. I was peeling bark off a tree on public property to calm my anxiety.
Two officers pulled up very quietly in a squad car while I had my back turned. They did not announce their arrival. When I noticed them approaching me by the sound of their footsteps, I was frightened and reached for my phone to record them. They thought I was going for a weapon and one reached for his pistol. I put my hands up.
They illegally detained me and took my ID to run a background check. The one who had started to draw his gun on me asked me if I’d had any thoughts of hurting myself or others.
My background check came up clean. They released me and told me I wasn’t doing anything illegal. I went to my car and bawled my eyes out, thinking about how I’d almost died for the crime of “weird behavior.”
Don’t give these pigs a registry of the mentally ill. They’re already trying to kill us for no good reason.

Did you know that you can actually write a horror WITHOUT vilifying mentally ill people and perpetuating harmful misinterpretations of mental illness and related disorders? Wild, I know

Dear people who aren't physically disabled who plan to write fantasy settings:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Several images taken from the Geordi La Forge yes and no meme format, with Geordi holding out a hand disapprovingly for the no section, then pointing in approval for the yes section.
The first image is the meme:
No: "Saying the existance of magic in your setting means there are no disabled people (this literally just means disabled people are killed. AKA eugenics)"
Yes: "Having disabled people who use magical mobility aids and other assistive devices. Realizing that someone is still disabled even if their prosthetic arm is made of magic instead of plastic."
This is followed by four more panels of yes section:
"Geordi la Forge is still literally disabled. His visor helping him does not erase his disability and make him magically abled."
"Toph from Avatar: The Last Airbender is still literally disabled even though her Earthbending helps her. It does not make her disability ~magically~ go away."
"Having your disability be accomodated does not mean the disability goes away. Having a prosthetic hand, even one that's made of magic, does not mean you're not disabled."
"Magical mobility aids do not mean disabled people don't exist. It just means they use magical mobility aids instead of plastic or metal ones. A limb made of magic is still a prosthetic even if it's made of the soul of the universe instead of plastic and metal."
Then another no panel: "'There's no disabled people beacuse magic'".
Then one last yes panel: "'Magic helps disabled people in a variety of ways'".
End ID.]

This would help a lot of people, and it's one of the reasons it's so important to push back against the "but the parties are equally bad, so you shouldn't bother voting" type rhetoric.

btw, relating to the anons question [about the swear censoring in captions]. my disability is non-related to my hearing, so its not particularly my place to say shit, but ive always found it questionable when people leave certain details out or change certain details of captions that are necessarily important, but add more nuance, for lack of a better word [ex: changes made mid sentence, parts of the sentence that aren't technically important but add a little more, etc.] is that also ableist?
Yes, yes it is.
The industry explanation is the distinction between “subtitles” and “closed captioning” where subtitles have to get the meaning across while cc has to transcribe exactly what is said?
And guess which is cheaper?

Sometimes I get the overwhelming urge to wear a shirt with a QR code with a horrible virus on it, so if some asshole tries to record me in public during sensory overload or something like that, it’s destroy their phone. Would I get sued? Probably yeah. Would it solve the problem and also be extremely funny? Hell yeah it would
Okay but like maybe if on top of the QR code it said “malware, do not scan” you’d be legally off the hook?
Because this is indeed a very funny thought.

is it ableist when tiktok users add captions/subtitles and replace words they say out loud with emojis in the text?
like someone will say dick out loud in the video and the caption has the eggplant emoji or something instead of just "dick"
maybe it's not that big of a deal but it's kind of irritating to me and i kinda wanna know what other people think about that.
- 🦷
So it definitely is, but in this case it’s structural ableism not the specific content creator. Unfortunately if “bad language” is in the captions, tiktok will take the video down or drag it down in the algorithm so no one will see it.
So in order to get the video seen, the creator can not properly caption the curse words. Which is super fucked up, and very ableist.
The ableism is coming from the policies of the site itself in this case.

i’m in college rn and i’m struggling so much because i have a Learning Disability i cannot get accommodations for because getting legally diagnosed could literally ruin life, especially medically. autistic people can be denied surgeries or the ability to make their own medical decisions or life saving organ transplants, it’s so scary. i’m not ashamed of or bitter about my autism at all—it makes me who i am and i’m proud of that—but i wish the world felt safer, i wish making sure i kept autonomy over myself didn’t come at the cost of suffering through the system. damned if you do and damned if you don’t
Yeah no, this struggle is real and abled people really need to understand how much a formal diagnosis of anything can fuck a person over.
Need accommodations? Well then you need a diagnosis! And like you said, good luck getting life saving medical care or adopting a kid or accessing other needed government resources in our eugenicist society!

Yeah cringe culture is dead but you know who are actually genuinely really fucking embarrassing?
Neurotypical parents of autistic people who are shit at dealing with autistic people. Like they don't even have the self-awareness to be embarrassed about it, they'll just openly casually admit "yeah I have no idea why my child consistently keeps having the same reaction when I keep doing these same actions lol" like they don't know the definition of insanity or the idea that hurting people is bad.
Like ok learning the ropes of how autistic people work and function is probably strange and confusing to an nt person who has never encountered people on the spectrum, but how do you raise one without learning jack fucking shit??? And then admit that you're just as shit at it today as the day they were born. How do you have 20 years of experience in something and less skills than someone competent could learn in 20 days.
If there's one fucking group of people who can make me physically cringe when they talk, it's those people making cheery small talk about how they never bothered to learn how to not hurt their own child.

Fuck my abled primary care doctor for telling me that my chronic pain is because I'm fat. I'm sure it doesn't help, but I have psoriatic arthritis that went undiagnosed for years and has likely caused permanent joint damage because I didn't get help sooner. Also. My fatness isn't a good reason for my fingers/hands/wrists/elbows to hurt.
Yeah fuck that doctor!
