A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine (great name for a soul album) finds that gay haters are more likely to be angry, physically hostile and otherwise unpleasant to others. Emmanuele Jannini, an endocrinologist and medical sexologist at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, reports that "those who harbour homophobic attitudes are often encumbered with deficient coping mechanisms, and that their averse reaction to same-sex couplings may be a direct result of their own gender confusion," shocking few.

Overall, Jannini and his team of researchers discovered a strong link between "fearful-avoidant" attachment styles – where individuals are uncomfortable with close relationships – and homophobia. It was also found that those with immature defence mechanisms were more homophobic than their emotionally-developed counterparts. High levels of hostility and anger, measured as psychoticism, were also linked to homophobia, with anti-gay beliefs believed to stem primarily from a limited capacity to empathise or 'open up'.

Among the 551 young Italians surveyed, other contributing factors include "religiosity, sensitivity to disgust, hypermasculinity and misogyny." via Boing Boing

The FBI reports that 700,993 people were arrested for marijuana-related offenses in 2014. More than 88% were for simple possession. This is the first time the number of arrests have increased since 2009. Harry Anslinger, the first commissioner of the U.S. Treasury Department's Federal Bureau of Narcotics and a supremely hateful racist, would be proud.

"These numbers refute the myth that nobody actually gets arrested for using marijuana," said Mason Tvert, director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project. "It’s hard to imagine why more people were arrested for marijuana possession when fewer people than ever believe it should be a crime. Law enforcement officials should not be wasting their time and resources arresting and prosecuting adults for using marijuana. While law enforcement was busy making nearly three quarters of a million marijuana arrests, more than 35% of murders went unsolved, the clearance rate for rape was less than 40%, and for robbery and property crimes, it was below 30%."

There are a lot of reasons why weed arrests are on the rise. It's important to keep weed illegal to support the prison industry, drug testing labs, court-mandated treatment centers, law-enforcement budgets, corrupt officials, and all the other businesses that make money from weed prohibition. It's also a useful way to lock up poor people and minorities without having a legitimate reason. As a conservative estimate, every person who gets arrested for weed probably has to pay at least $1,000 in fines, bonds, treatment, lawyers, etc. $1,000 X 700,993 = 700 million dollars. Then you have to figure each arrest costs at least $1,000 from police department budgets (paid by taxes) and incarceration (paid by taxes). This is real folding money and the people who are enriched by drug prohibition are not going to give up without a fight.

Blindsight is a strange phenomenon that sometimes occurs when people have lost sight due to visual cortex damage but still respond to visual stimuli outside of their conscious awareness. New research into blindsight is offering clues, and even more riddles, about how we can "pay attention" outside of what we historically have considered conscious thought. From David Robson's fascinating article in BBC Future:

One of the first tasks (in a recent research effort) was to test exactly what blindsight patients are capable of without their conscious visual awareness – and the results have been quite remarkable. Of particular interest has been the fact that they can sense emotion: when presented with faces, they can tell whether it is happy or sad, angry or surprised, and they even start to unconsciously mimic the expressions. “Even though they did not report anything at a conscious level, we could show a change in attitude, a synchronisation of emotional expressions to the pictures in their blind field,” says (Tilburg University scientist Marco) Tamietto...

Besides mirroring expressions, they also show physiological signs of stress when they see a picture of a frightened face...

In 2008, Tamietto and (blindsight research pioneer Lawrence) Weiskrantz’s team put another blindsight patient through the most gruelling test yet... He was blind across the whole of his visual field, and normally walked with a white cane. But the team took away his cane and then loaded a corridor with furniture that might potentially trip him up, before asking him make his way to the other side. “Despite saying he wasn’t able to see, we saw him shooting by on his very first attempt,” says Tamietto. Importantly, the participant claimed that not only was he not aware of having seen anything; he was not even aware of having moved out of the way of the objects. He insisted he had just walked straight down the hallway. According to Beatrice de Gelder, who led the work, he was “at a loss to explain or even describe his actions”.

Bill Nye Debunks Anti-Abortion Logic With Science
