This is more digging through the archives and finding photographs shot on the last walk I went on in Thurrock before upping sticks and moving down to Keynsham in July 2022. It is interesting looking back on these images and realising just how bleak it could get down on the Thames estuary, even at the height of summer. This makes me appreciate what I have on my doorstep here in Keynsham:)

I was digging through the archives and found these four images from at least fifteen years ago, shot in the winter as the sun was going down. With some cropping, I thought they would make an interesting composite. However, I wasn't really happy with the colour quality of these old images so, I starting playing around with the colourising filter and, this is what I came up with:)

Here's a photograph from the last winter (2021/22) I spent in Essex before moving down to Keynsham in Somerset. This is looking towards what passed for hills back in Essex:) I wouldn't mind going back for a visit one day but, I'm so glad I'm living in the West Country now…

Here's another example of trees and bushes against the skyline illustrating how the mood and feel of a particular location changes dramatically with different weather conditions and the passage of the seasons. Revisiting locations at different times of the year in changing weather conditions is a part of how I go about my photography. It's about getting to really know a landscape. During the lockdowns of 2020/2021, we really got to know this particular location:)

Part of how I go about my photography is quite frequently going back to the same location over the course of a year to capture how the mood and feel of it changes with the passage of the seasons and the prevailing weather conditions. These four shots from roughly the same position at the edge of a pasture are an example of this practice. I hope that after viewing these, you can appreciate why I take this approach:)

8.30am in the morning is not my normal time for photography. However, I was waiting for a cab to take me to hospital for a scan, and to keep my mind off things, I took a few pictures with my phone. This was the best of the lot. There has been a certain amount of editing to enhance the early morning light…
PS - the scan didn't reveal anything untoward so, that's one less thing to worry about:)

As life has dictated I won't have the time to do any more photography until February, I've backed up everything I've shot this month. Before I did that, I picked out the five best photos for the month, one from each time I managed to get out. As you can see, most of the time the light conditions weren't exactly brilliant! Still, I like the challenge of trying to get the best from what gets thrown at me with the weather and the light…

It's steeper than it looks…
Walking back down the hill from Cleeve Wood and then through Keynsham Meadow before finishing up for a post walk drink at The Lock Keeper pub by the Avon:)

The gap…
There's something about the tangled, chaotic nature of some hedges in the winter months that I find fascinating. I've a feeling there may be a drawing project coming out of this one…

Tangled up…
This was part of a hedge but, as you can see, it's taken on a life of its own, albeit a tangled, complicated one:)

I've been experimenting with different ways of presenting my images. This involves taking a number of photographs of one subject and presenting them as a set on a grid.
These four images were taken on a holiday on the East Sussex coast a few years ago. The top left image is of a wall in Rye. The top right is of shingle on the beach. The bottom left is of the top of a groyne post. The bottom right is of worn and peeling paint on the wooden door of a now abandoned lifeboat house. I played around with various methods of colourisation and concluded that this sepia toning was the best fit for this.

I've been experimenting with different ways of presenting my images. This involves taking a number of photographs of one subject and presenting them as a set on a grid.
These four images of trees were taken walking up the footpath in Cleeve Wood. I did create a colour version to start out with but, that was distracting from the patterns made by the tree trunks, branches and twigs. I initially converted it to black and white but, the result felt a little flat. So, I then tried a few colourising options out and, this is what I came up with:)

The fading light of a winter afternoon. This was taken when we (me and Liz) were past the halfway mark of our circular walk out from Keynsham, and heading back home. Via The Lock Keeper pub for a post walk drink and a chat to reflect on life:)

As much as I dislike the short days of winter, as a photographer, I find it the most inspiring season of all. That's because, shorn of foliage, the structure of trees is revealed along with the intricate patterns of their branches and twigs. Yesterday, I was lucky in having sunshine and a blue sky to help add definition to this tree:)

We (me and Liz) have dubbed this the top meadow, as it's the highest point we reach on one of our circular walks out from Keynsham and back. I've photographed and drawn this tree, the hedge and the meadow many times, in all seasons and weather conditions, and will continue to do so. I'm fascinated by how the mood and feel of a particular location can change with the passage of the seasons, the weather and the resulting light conditions. Doing this is a key part of my practice as a photographer…
