As life has dictated I won't have the time to do any more photography until February, I've backed up everything I've shot this month. Before I did that, I picked out the five best photos for the month, one from each time I managed to get out. As you can see, most of the time the light conditions weren't exactly brilliant! Still, I like the challenge of trying to get the best from what gets thrown at me with the weather and the light…

In 1893, knowing that Conan Doyle was going to be killing off Sherlock Holmes, the Strand Magazine decided to fill the void with a series of medical mysteries called "Diary of a Doctor" by veteran magazine story writer LT Meade.
I've always thought it would be fun to reimagine them as adventures Watson had during the hiatus, trying to continue solving mysteries by himself using Holmes' methods, and working through his grief. I also wanted to flesh them out a little, adding in more character moments and scene setting.
So... that's what I've done! This is part mine, part LT Meade's, created from the story 'My First Patient' originally published in 1893.
You can read the complete story here!

The Penguin: Top Hat – TV Review
TL;DR – While this is an episode of big action beats, I was more interested in the small conversations that spoke loudly. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.5 out of 5. Disclosure – I paid for the Binge service that viewed this series. The Penguin Review – Goodness, we are already at the penultimate episode of this series, which is astounding. This season has flown by, but it never felt rushed because it was…

"You're drunk!" / "Yes, I'm drunk. And you're beautiful. And tomorrow morning I'll be sober…but you'll still be beautiful." Loki/Darcy
So this is part of my overarching series for answers to this particular prompt, but it's also a "Just Pieces On The Board" fic, since there's mention of Frigga/Mycroft. Enjoy!
A Little Sleepy Confession - Loki gets drunker than Darcy has ever seen him be drunk before, and so she takes care of him.
READ @ AO3 | SERIES PAGE
When Thor had sent the message that Loki needed Darcy right away, she had thought for sure Loki was near death or was deathly ill or something like that. What she hadn’t expected was a curled up, drunken Loki with a triumphant looking Brunhilde and smug looking Thor sitting nearby with flagons of something alcoholic in their hands.
“What did you give him?” Darcy asked, listening as Loki moaned slightly.
“A new variety of Asgardian mead,” Thor said. “My brother cannot hold his liquor.”
“Well, duh,” Darcy said, rolling his eyes. “I don’t drink much, and anything Earth-realm has is like water. It’s been a few years since he’s had the hard stuff, of course he’s going to pass right out after…” She paused. “How many cups did he have?”
“Three,” Brunhilde said. “I’m on my seventh, Thor on his sixth.”
“Well, help me get him to my apartment,” she said, glaring at the two of them. Brunhilde looked a bit cowed and Thor looked sheepish, and they set their flagons down and each got up, getting Loki to a standing position and half dragging him from Jane’s apartment.
“We were celebrating the betrothal of Queen Frigga and Mycroft Holmes,” Brunhilde explains. “The Strange Doctor is looking at ways to help them even out lifespans, but we all think they’re a good match.”
“They’ve been together for ages, haven’t they? Even though Mycroft is mainly in London and Frigga is in Norway?”
Thor nodded. “I accept him as a consort for my mother. He has proven himself to be a good man, and he loves her. It is a match well made.”
“She’s happy,” Loki said, flashing Darcy a grin. “I’m happy she’s happy.”
“Hey, you,” she said softly. “Gonna be sick?”
“No, no, just sleepy,” Loki said. “Need a dark room.”
“Put him in the bedroom. I’ll take care of him,” she said when they got to her apartment, which thankfully was on the same floor as Thor and Jane’s. Loki’s was on the same floor, too, but he spent all his time at her place so he might as well sleep off the drinking binge there too. Brunhilde and Thor maneuvered Loki around the sofa and into the bedroom, Darcy right behind them. They at least put him on the bed gently, and he stretched for a moment before curling up again. “I got it from here. Tell Frigga I’ll send an engagement gift later.”
Thor and Brunhilde both nodded and left the bedroom, and Darcy closed all the drapes so it was nice and dark. She was about to get him her sleep mask when his arm shot out and he grabbed her wrist. “Oh beautiful love, stay with me.”
Darcy pried his grip from her wrist, then sat down on the bed and toed off her flats before curling up next to him. He wrapped his arms around her and she had to admit, whatever brew he had it hadn’t given him beer breath. She snuggled in close and shut her eyes. “You must be really drunk if you’re busting out lines like ‘beautiful love,’” she said, her tone amused.
“But you are beautiful and you are my love.”
She chuckled. “You’re drunk drunk.”
“Yes, I'm drunk. And you're beautiful. And tomorrow morning I'll be sober…but you'll still be beautiful.”
“Tell me again when you’re sober.”
“If you insist.”
“I do.” She pulled his palm up and kissed it softly before she yawned. “Let’s get us some rest, big guy.”
“As you wish.”

X-Cops Theory: Tulpas, an Alternate Explanation for Ghosts and Spooks
The idea that the ghosts of loved ones could be corrupted tulpa thought forms, created merely by remembering them, is horrifying:
And, for fun: what is the Stargate Project this analogue horror video mentions? I'll let Wikipedia explain:
The Stargate Project was a secret U.S. Army unit established in 1977 at Fort Meade, Maryland, by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and SRI International (a California contractor) to investigate the potential for psychic phenomena in military and domestic intelligence applications. The project, and its precursors and sister projects, originally went by various code names – 'Gondola Wish', 'Stargate', 'Grill Flame', 'Center Lane', 'Project CF', 'Sun Streak', and 'Scanate' – until 1991 when they were consolidated and rechristened as the "Stargate Project".
The Stargate Project's work primarily involved remote viewing, the purported ability to psychically "see" events, sites, or information from a great distance. The project was overseen until 1987 by Lt. Frederick Holmes "Skip" Atwater (born 1947), an aide and "psychic headhunter" to Maj. Gen. Albert Stubblebine, and later president of the Monroe Institute. The unit was small scale, comprising about 15 to 20 individuals, and was run out of "an old, leaky wooden barracks".
The Stargate Project was terminated and declassified in 1995 after a CIA report concluded that it was never useful in any intelligence operation. Information provided by the program was vague and included irrelevant and erroneous data, and there were suspicions of inter-judge reliability.
(**Note**: Highly recommend this podcast; but the audio peeks several times in this episode (error.) I'd recommend picking any episode from the tags I included and starting from there.)
#txf#history#life#xf meta#YouTube#this was a fun vid btw#Creep Cast looks into online horror stories#some creepypastas and the genres that bloomed after#and some are SO good.#Left Right is more horror-fantasy#Pen Pal is written from a man looking back on his childhood and feels very Stand By Me (but with stalker vibes) and it's moving/terrifying#Stolen Tongues is Native American spirit monsters#My Wife Won't Stop Peaking drops off at the end but the contents before are HAUNTING#Borrasca-- very x-files mytharc with its twist at the end (horrifying). Got any book recs? Not a specific genre or anything, just some of your favorites.
Most of these are YA and middle grade fiction. I probably suffer from nostalgia and recency bias in some cases.

This might be a loaded question, but can you share what you know about the Montauk Project, Montauk boys/girls and about Project Stargate or any other projects involving the paranormal, especially those involving children? Are there any similar programs (occurring now/recently or in the past) that you know of or have any information about you could share?
Montauk Project was at Camp Hero. In an underground facility at Montauk Point, about 30 to 50 physicists and engineers experimented in quantum and particle physics (black hole simulation). Their experiments included super-powerful electrical fields, weather control, psychotronics (interfacing mind and machine), genetics, particle beam technology, and electronic and drug- based mind control.
Stargate Project was a secret U.S. Army unit established in 1978 at Fort Meade, Maryland, by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and SRI International (a California contractor) to investigate the potential for psychic phenomena in military and domestic intelligence applications. The Project, and its precursors and sister projects, originally went by various code names—GONDOLA WISH, STARGATE, GRILL FLAME, CENTER LANE, PROJECT CF, SUN STREAK, SCANATE—until 1991 when they were consolidated and rechristened as “Stargate Project”. This has been sitting in my drafts for 1000 years oops Rules: Post the names of all the files in your wip folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it.
Thank you so much for tagging me @venus-haze!! I am also excited to participate in the self-callout lol
I don’t actually have a “WIP Folder”, I just have. A lot of WIPs. About to expose myself on a lot of different fandoms lol(I have a million different sideblogs that I organize a lot of the things I like by)
• Didn’t Your Momma Ever Tell You Not to Talk to Strangers? — Bo Sinclair x Reader (House of Wax) *I am also converting this one to an "Original" piece so I can publish it as a serial, so if you see the other version on Amazon under the pen name "M.E. Roselli" that's me. I'm still going to keep writing it as this fanfic, but there IS an alternate version. The other version is about a cult instead of Wax; instead of Vincent, Bo("Buck" in the alternate version) has a twin sister who was raised to be the cult's messiah. The cult is dead and gone along with their parents, but she's still living it. I just know that a lot of people's fanfics are being stolen, so I wanted to clear up that that is NOT the case with mine.
• Holmes and Dracula VS. Jack the Ripper — Original Work (Sherlock Holmes and Dracula team up to stop Jack the Ripper from bringing about the Apocalypse)
• Tides of Lust — Original Work (Meliora, a traveling bard with demonic blood, goes on a pirate adventure with a feared disciple of Davy Jones and also meets a Vampiric Warlord)
• What The Dead Men Say — Original Work (Ivar Ragnarsson ends up in Victorian England, where he has little choice but to team up with an archeologist; was technically an ACV fic originally, but I hate the ISU stuff and refuse to include it so really it’s just a history fic tbh)
• Playing House with Private X — Original Work (A cryogenically frozen super soldier navigates the modern world with the help of a would-be super soldier who slipped through the cracks. Very slice of life; it started as a Soldier Boy fic—American Pie, but I scrubbed it of IP so I can continue it as an original work and publish it as erotic shorts)
• ‘Til Death Do Us Part — Original Work (Would-be Murder victim Judith “Jude” Carpenter tries to start a new life in a small town…where her would have been killer has taken up residence as the priest. The two must work together to survive the town’s dark secret.)
• Careful What you Wish For — Original Work (Janie, a serial killer hitchhiking to avoid capture, ends up being held prisoner by Levi, a recluse out in the middle of nowhere, and she pretends to be a helpless victim in exchange for food and a warm place to sleep. The story focuses on her disturbing inner monologue through her act.)
• Lord of Roses, Master of Thorns — Original Work (Ancient Vampiric King Alistair Val Mirron must fall in love to end his curse of immortality; Myrinthe, an odd Peasant introduced to him by and old flame, seeks to remain in the castle at all costs to avoid being forced to marry the annoying rich boy in town.)
• Taken From the Ren Faire — Original Work (This was meant to be a cheesy erotica short but I accidentally gave it a plot. Oops. Fantasy Author Vera Fox is spirited away into a fantasy world after drinking some strange mead from an interesting new vendor. She ends up in a fake relationship with a former bandit while he tries to help get her home; when they get separated, she questions if she even wants to go back to her old life, and this is only compounded when she finds her Ren Faire lover is trapped there too. This one is full of tropes because I'll be honest, I'm "Writing to Market" here, but I love the characters anyway. Owen-her Ren Faire lover- has a huge Clydesdale named Stormbreaker that he rescued from a roadside medieval themed attraction, and I love him.)
• A Marriage of Inconvenience — Homelander x Reader (The Boys; Amazon Show)
• Woven Sagas — Eivor Wolfkissed x Ivar Ragnarsson (Assassin’s Creed Valhalla)
• Mother — Skyrim Fic about my Dragonborn raising Aventus
• Critical Darling — Homelander x OC(Darcy Hayes, Dreamweaver) (The Boys; Amazon Show)
• In All My Dreams I Drown — Reaver x Sparrow (Fable 2)
Tags: I am abysmal at remembering URLs off the top of my head, but I will try. @sketchy-rosewitch @visceravalentines @rottent33th @ventiswampwater
#tag game#I don't get to write for ME often because I ghostwrite for work#but I want to make a habit of publishing at least SOMETHING of my own between work projects.#'Till Death Do Us Part and Taken From the Ren Faire have priority right now

These scrubby looking trees and bushes against the skyline illustrate how the mood and feel of a particular location changes dramatically with different weather conditions and the passage of the seasons. Revisiting locations at different times of the year in changing weather conditions is a part of how I go about my photography. It's about getting to really know a landscape.
Location: Holm Mead (nr. Bitton), Gloucestershire, UK

I'm sorry - but Ms Marple could 100% solve the Kira case. This woman solves murder mysteries based off hearing the story alone - not to mention the fact that she isn't even the main character in her first book and yet she still manages to steal the show! She might not understand the Death Note itself - but she would know.
Heck, she'd probably even figure out the Death Note purely based on a 'similar incident' that happened in St Mary's Mead! But more notably, she would never be suspected to be on the case. She's a little old lady who knits in the background - no need to be worried... right up until she steps in, Death Note in hand, and announces she's solved the case.
Seriously - putting Poirot and Holmes in the 'solve' square and Marple in the 'not solve' square is rather rude to her - she's just as clever as the boys, but infinitely more subtle - and that's why she'd be so dangerous.
Ms Marple works so well as a detective because no one ever suspects her of being on the case. And considering that 'Kira' (Light) would only really be able to keep up with people he knew were coming for him, that would mean Ms Marple is completely out of his mind for the entire thing.
Again, this woman solved the mystery of the Blue Geranium purely by listening to someone else tell the story while only commenting about wasps. She'd have him figured out.

Traditions of British Espionage
Beowulf: The ancient mead period, honey wine. An Irishman, Grendel, is recruited by the Snake, the Vikings, to battle the Bretons. The island is conquered, "Loser", but the recording of the proper solution is recorded by the Irishman, in the famous epic, "Beowulf".
Eire: U'Niall of the Nine Hostages, the Spaniard Caspian, the Black Dutch, conquers Ireland, Britain, and France. He takes hostages, one per kingdom, and establishes the dominatrix trade, the training sergeants for male assassins; spies. The island converts to Catholicism, under Roman rule, through St. Patrick; the Regency begins, of London, the whore house.
Holy Wood: The insurance trade, theater, begins through Robert the Bruce; Scotland, becomes the actor's chapel. The fable, the Euripedean concept of children's religion for adult science, is replaced with Sophocles, the explanation of family of ruler, to be duplicated by poor. Thespians (field research), actors (spies of peak athletic form), and set designers (engineers), begin in tradition, The Foreign Office.
The Wharfsmen: Elizabeth I, founds the Church of England. Drug dealers, bearing opium, distribute through the Regencis, to ports of call, beginning Shylock and Holmes, the Nuns Convent Agency; tourism. Enemy ports, have Mothers Superior and spy troupes deployed, out of Irish territory; psychiatric Juwes and Hebrews, distriibuted through work programs, charity programs; "forward infantry", "Reds"; Redcoats, the spy's assassins and local regiments fitting color assisting, "Gangs of Scotland".
The Nietzschean Society: The European communes, establish the practices of communal wage (insurance slush funds), priestly tracking (criminal spies), banking fraud (the grand tour), pornographic exposition halls (criminal espionage), psychiatric interviews (stolen techniques), and film ciphers (examined dead). The result, is the Lion's Gate.
Scotland Yard: Generals in World War 2, figure out how to play mini-putt, golf for children, to teach government orderlies, how to play as a defeated commander. Each soldier, can program an entire practice, to place their own society in brackets, available at War College to study.

Australian Issues Primer
9 July 2023.
Comment: The ABC's Gareth Hutchins paints aspects of the context to an Australian economic and social debate that has come to treat the unemployed and many welfare recipients as 'dole bludgers' and would-be fraudsters. He does so in the light of changing economic events and the narratives of economic theory. He barely hints, though, at changing state elite attitudes or underlying classes processes - so it is a 'middle-brow' analysis focused primarily on culture and narratives.
Note: the ABC site is an open-access one, and so the full article is readily available.
Extract 1: How did the Robodebt scandal happen in Australia?
The Royal Commissioner Catherine Holmes, former Queensland Supreme Court chief justice, says we need to change our social attitudes to people receiving welfare payments so it doesn't happen again.
She said politicians must lead the cultural change, given their unique position in the community.
But what about economists too?
Because economists are the ones who built the theoretical framework that has lent intellectual "credibility" to the idea that we need hundreds of thousands of people to be unemployed to keep inflation under control.
Is it surprising that that idea could have had a negative influence on our culture over time?
Is it surprising that it could have led to a situation in which unemployed people were treated with such contempt by a government and public servants?
Extract 2: During Australia's genuine "full employment" era, from 1946 to the mid-1970s, our unemployment rate averaged below 2 per cent.
That full employment regime was supported by a political culture that punished politicians for allowing unemployment to get too high.
However, in the early 1970s when our economy was hit by "stagflation," unemployment started to rise sharply, to levels not seen in a generation.
It challenged policymakers' notions of reality.
Extract 3: But while policymakers were trying to fight stagflation in that decade, economists were busy working on an alternative theory of "full employment" that would eventually allow a much higher level of unemployment.
You can get a taste of that work-in-progress by reading this Nobel lecture from 1977, by the famous British economist James Meade.
When you read it, you'll see how Mr Meade was struggling with the definition of full employment and wondering if his previous idea of what full employment was ought to be abandoned.
His lecture was a small stepping-stone in the history of economic thought.
Extract 4: Jump forward to the early 1990s, and Australian policymakers had well-and-truly abandoned the old full employment model, and they'd begun using a new model built around the concept of inflation-targeting.
It's the system we're still using today.
For inflation-targeting to work, the unemployment rate has to be allowed to move up and down to keep just enough "slack" in the labour market to prevent wages and inflation growing too quickly.
And the adoption of inflation-targeting was accompanied by a radical overhaul of our labour market institutions to support the new definition of full employment.
For example, in the 1980s and 1990s, the Hawke and Keating Labor governments, and the Howard Coalition government after them, began to make financial support for unemployed people increasingly conditional on certain behavioural obligations.
A "new paternalism" had arrived in Canberra, on political winds from overseas.
Extract 5: Could the Robodebt scandal have happened if our modern economic policies didn't already treat unemployed people in such a cavalier way?
