#Repost via @cdcgov #HIV #Facts 1st Statistic: HIV is not a gay disease. HIV is not even just transmitted via sex. My mother for example contracted it through shared intravenous drug utilization. When it was first brought to the world's attention it was transferred through blood transfusions. It still can be transferred through mother to child during birth (although rare nowadays in the U.S. since mothers are tested during prenatal care). Thus, yes women are impacted by HIV and should protect themselves by using a condom. Getting tested together is important but even if you both test negative unprotected sex is you trusting your partner to be honest with you about his or her sexual activities or remaining faithful to just you. 2nd Statistic: HIV is still often swept under the rug more so in #AfricanAmerican communities than any other community. My family did not want any of my family to know my mother had #AIDS. I did not even know I had #HIV until I was in my teens and again was told to tell no one. Of course I did not follow through on doing that and do not ever plan to again but many people with HIV do follow through on telling very few family members/friends if even that and concealing it from their sexual partners. #Stigma aka shame associated with having HIV or being connected to someone with HIV causes our African American gay men and heterosexual women to contract the virus in alarming numbers compared to other ethnic groups. We cannot be hush hush about HIV and change these astounding statistics. 3rd Statistic: I believe everyone should test for all stds every 6 months if you are engaging in any sexual activity, whether you are married, in a relationship, or single. Not enough of our sisters are being tested often. Stigma or shame plays a role in that. Also once a woman is diagnosed I am sure the medicine reminds her of being HIV positive, how hard she assumes dating with HIV will be, how her life as she once knew it or dreamed it is now over, etc. Keeping individuals who are compassionate, who unconditonally love and support you, and motivate you to do positive things as well as make positive steps is so salient in adjusting to a happy+fulf. life.

#Fbf A text from a woman who I dated...Someone out there with #HIV or another #std needs to read this. People will still date you, even with HIV. There are people who will have sex with you without a condom too. Why on hells earth would someone do that? People are educated to know there is #PREP (a daily pill that HIV negative persons can take which offers up to 96% protection in preventing HIV transmission up to 96%). People are also educated to know that when an HIV positive person is undetectable (having too low amount virus in his or her blood to transmit it even without protection)there is 98% prevention. I was very excited to recieve these text messages. It meant acceptance, showing that she was really into me, and also educated on protecting herself without using regular protection aka condoms method. I appreciate this woman. Some people feel it does. Others do not. Some people freeze up, have a disappinted or disgusted look on their faces, while others compliment how strong you are, and ask questions about your experience living with it. I honestly used to feel it made me undateable (I mean I was raised to tell no one). Although I do not blame my family for that because they truly just wanted to protect me and give me the most normal worry free life possible. I used to feel they did the wrong thing and even though technically it was wrong, based on how people react in a very negative or disrespectful way I can understand why they just said NO. To anyone newly diagnosed or if you know someone who has HIV: HIV DOES NOT MAKE YOU UNDATEABLE. How you think about dating and falling in love is what you MUST CONQUER with this std or any std for that matter. If you think no one will want to sleep with you or that you are less of a person because of this, dating will suck. But if you think you are sexy, own it, go out and meet different people, be brave and say after a few dates I am HIV positive, you will empower yourself in some pretty sensational ways. I have never infected anyone. I take my meds. I say, be bold: "Pull out a condom smoothly. Say my medicine protects you also since HIV is so low in my blood it cannot transmit. I have it under control. And there are other preventative barriers we can take to make sure you never contract it. I really like you and I hope your interest in me does not change after this." If he or she rejects you after that, it is that person's choice. But you did the right thing and were OH SO BRAVE ABOUT IT!! 👏👏👏✊👌👌😍😎 I usually get a standing ovation and a yes. You can tell a lot about a person when things are bad. Actually I’m a firm believer that you don’t really know who you’re fucking with until times ain’t so peachy. When money is low and a person is still riding with you, nurture that relationship. If you have a falling out with a person and they maintain your secrets, cherish them. #HIV #AIDS #nytimes #news "San Francisco is Changing Face of AIDS Treatment" No one expects to get HIV. The initial shock of it makes you very melancholy. I was 9 or 10 when my mother told me. The gentleman in this article is 43. It's was tear jerking and scary to me as it was to him. But it's not something to be ashamed of. It doesn't mean your life is over and all your dreams have to crash when you find out you're infected. Blaming my mom wouldn't have ever helped me to accept this illness and live happy in spite of it. The same goes for Rafael and any other HIV or STD infected individual. Forgiving my mother before she died was one of the best feelings and decisions I ever made.
