The stars and Snowbaz

I think the sun and stars are important in Carry On for a reason, and symbolize something bigger rather than being something special we relate to Snowbaz. (Sorry if this has been done in the fandom already.)

Simon is referred to as the sun

Baz is a vampire, and vampires are thought of as more nocturnal creatures

So, Baz as the moon

And the stars?

Well, the sun and the moon are millions of miles away. They can’t reach each other on their own, can they?

The stars bring them together and can connect dots between the two

The stars are so important to Snowbaz. Without Simon sharing his magic or Baz creating the galaxy, they might never have started to grow closer in a way that mattered. The stars were also there in Chapter 41 of Wayward Son (the truck-bed scene).

And I think this could be a metaphor for their relationship. Simon and Baz are two completely different people, in so many ways. I said in an earlier post that these two could have just as easily been friends as enemies, and that the only thing stopping them was their choices.

Simon is always hot (sun) and Baz is always running cold (moon). Simon’s magic was described as hot and sticky, like a humid summer day might feel. Baz is cool to the touch and pale, like the moon shining on a chilly fall night.

The stars are a metaphor for the distance they’re willing to go, the space they’re willing to reach across to get to the other. Simon and Baz choose to make the effort to come back to the other and understand the other, though they are so young and inexperienced that they are having trouble.

They try, nonetheless.

But remember the other reasons Simon and Baz are having trouble reaching out:

Simon killed his mentor and father. He has PTSD and depression and a touch aversion.

Baz is having trouble talking about a key part of himself. He needs therapy, which he wasn’t listening to Simon about in the first book.

America was extremely hard on them both in so many ways.

They both believe they don’t deserve the other.

Despite it, though, they want the other. Simon and Baz want to work through everything they’re going through, all their trauma, to connect with each other and have each other. Because they love each other, and they need each other.

The stars being a metaphor for their relationship make sense in my mind, and I hope we’re getting more stars in Any Way the Wind Blows.
