Imagine
‘Wishkin’ by Mary Wallace I have been looking at fish – and thinking about them – for quite a long time now. I am not really interested in painting still life. I want to paint movement and living forms. So my fish are swimming. Tails flicking. Eyes bright and alert. Muscular, toned bodies driving through the watery depths; or the more lugubrious fish which seem to be almost suspended in the…

Sakura
Sakura - a beautiful new series of paintings by Irish artist Mary Wallace featuring cherry blossoms
‘Sakura ‘ by Mary Wallace ©
My recent work is inspired by Japanese concepts
wabisabi, seeing beauty in imperfection;
kintsugi, the repair of broken porcelain using gold;
haiku, short poems of three lines / seventeen syllables.
Looking back I remember being fascinated by cherry blossom trees ever since I was a little girl. As I grew older I began to look forward to their arrival, wondering…

INDIGO #allthecoloursoftherainbow I use Indigo quite a lot in my paintings. It's inky blue-blackness is the perfect foil when I need the darkest dark as contrast. 'Sakura' Mary Wallace (c) (at Wexford, Ireland) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1Vo_hyiAaO/?igshid=emz98csdbxxs

Will you be watching the #lunareclipse tonight? Don't miss it. The last one in January was spectacular but you had to get up in the middle of the night to see it. I did and it was so inspiring - so much so that I painted 'In Moonlight' series. Tonight will be your chance as the eclipse will be visible to us between say 10pm and midnight (times for Wexford) Let's hope for a clear sky. Maximum extent is at 10:30pm. July's #fullmoon has many names: In Europe we call it the Hay Moon or the Mead Moon. Mead is created by fermenting honey mixed with water, sometimes adding fruits, spices, grains, or hops. For Hindus, this is the Guru Purnima celebrated as a time for clearing the mind and honoring the guru or spiritual master. This year it is a Rose Moon shining so low in the sky through more atmosphere which can give it a reddish rose color. The Maine Farmer's Almanac first published Indian names for the full Moons in the 1930's. According to this almanac, as the first full Moon of Summer, the Algonquin tribes in what is now the Eastern USA called this full Moon the Buck Moon. Early Summer is normally when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. They also called this the Thunder Moon because of early Summer's frequent thunderstorms. 'Hasu-Ko'
‘Hasu-Ko’
‘Hasu-Ko’ Mary Wallace ©
Hasu-Ko means ‘Lotus-Child’.
In Japanese mythology, a young girl, Hasu-Ko, died of love for her betrothed, whom she had never seen. Her spirit ‘stole’ the body of her sister Kei for a year so she and her fiancé could live as lovers. Kei became ill ‘like one dead’. At the end of the year Hasu-Ko brought her lover to her ancestral home and told her parents that she would…

The River Merchant's Wife II
The River Merchant’s Wife II
‘The River Merchant’s Wife II : And I will come out to meet you’
This painting was inspired by a poem I learned at school when I was about 11 years old. It has stayed with me ever since. I was captivated by it’s romance,simplicity and beauty. This is the second painting which depicts the moment when she sees the ship is in sight and soon her beloved husband will be home.
The River-Merchant’s…

Precious Bowls
Precious Bowls - Japanese Influences in my Work
Japanese Influences in my Work
For the past eighteen months or so I have been painting vessels – particularly chawan: the bowls used for drinking tea. There is something very special about my tea bowls. They are precious. They are bowls which have been broken and then given a new life. They have been repaired with pure gold.
We have all had that experience at one time or another. Something…

Seafaces © 2007
‘Seafaces’ came about in a different way.
I was working on a collection of work based on the epic saga of Saint Brendan the Navigator. There is a point in the adventure when the monks come across a vast ‘island’ of living seaweed (thought to be the Sargasso Sea). It took them days and days to get around it.
I thought about how we normally associate seaweed with the brownish…
