The thing that’s so important about Sydney’s ✨alleged✨ attraction towards Carmy is that his attention is something she wants not needs.

Syd knows her worth and knows she can stand on her own, but the thing Carmy doesn’t get is that she wants him there. It’s a contrast to Claire who seems “needy” with Carmy—yes she maybe does want him, but with the trauma tied to Claire as shown in his S2 panic scene™️ and how much she is metaphorically like fire to him, most of their relationship would thrive in codependency instead of the partnership that Sydney and Carmy already have.

Something I’ve learned as I grew older: not all romantic relationships are partnerships, and what we should be searching for is a combination of both not just the former.

He eats her scallop she subtracted from his, and he says it's "perfect" (she will later tell TJ the stinky/dusty place is "perfect" when everything is going right).

She asks for help prepping carrots. He says yes. Is it a "mystery achievement", though?

Does she need him to get her a cleaver? Maybe. She's thinking about it for sure. (Syd looking at Carmy the way Carmy usually looks at her.)

She didn't sign or open either of those agreements, but now she seems like she's pretty sure what he is to her.

This reminds me so much about that one quote from Lady Bird (dir. Gerwig, 2017): “Don’t you think maybe they are the same thing? Love and attention?”

Carmy is not the best at showing his love verbally. Yet, what he lacks in words is made up for attention and actions.

Love...is paying attention

A little rant..

I don’t know what it’s like to be a parent. But I know what it’s like to be a kid. And having someone actually really pay attention to you. That was…That was really special.

The third season explores whether our childhood experiences influence our psychology today and how this affects our current relationships. Since our parents are our first connections, their influence shapes how we love as adults. This theme resonates with me a lot in the moment. In his eulogy for his mother, Marcus reflects on how special it feels when someone truly pays attention to you as a child.

Sydney experienced healthy love from her father because he gave her his full attention. As a result, this is the kind of love she expects from Carmy. Carmy, on the other hand, struggles to give and receive love because his experience was different; Donna exploited the love he wanted to give, and he received very little attention as a child. Although Carmy wants to express love, he often faces ridicule from his family a being weird, and he withholds his expression of his attention on someone he loves.

When Carmy expresses his love for Sydney, symbolized by the jacket, and promises to be there for her and when he fails to meet those expectations, it affects him deeply, leading him to mentally check out. It seems like, in a way, it’s safer for him to only be present for Sydney physically? He finds joy in focusing his attention(love)on her, but Carmy's psyche often sabotages those experiences.

In the third season, he finds himself reflecting on his past mistakes. despite denying himself the joy of fully giving Sydney his attention and punishing himself with overthinking, he still expresses love for her in small ways, even when he isn't consciously aware of it. He often thinks of her and views her as a reminder of Chef Terry, which inspires him in his cooking. Even when Carmy believes he can only offer his physical presence to Sydney, he's still in sync with her mental, emotional, and physical state. On the surface, Sydney tells Carmy that she needs his focus on the business, but as we see in the next season, there is a realization that work family is closer, and underneath those relationships is love trying to find a way to express itself.

Same reason, I believe, why Sydney didn’t return feelings for Marcus. Sydney likes someone as ambitious as she is. While Marcus and Luca are undoubtedly great guys, Sydney likes someone who—in her and Carmy’s words—can keep up with her.

Y'all, Luca is not as ambitious as Carmy, he already said that, nor does he want to be. He is fine with being #2. He is fine with being Pippen to Marcus' Jordan.

Part of the reason Syd likes Carmy is because he is like that because she is like that. Luca will not push Syd the way Carmy does, even though Carmy is frustrating AF and is not being a good partner and needs to learn to truly collaborate.

She knows Carmy is an artist, she is inspired by him, just like she is Carmy's muse and every foolish thing he has done thus far has been trying to impress her or prove that he's worthy of that admiration.
